Interesting.....
Some Windows Phones have a Secure Digital (SD) card that's used to expand the amount of storage space on the phone. If your phone has one, it's in an SD card slot underneath the battery cover on the back of your phone.
Windows Phone uses a special high–performance SD card that works differently than SD cards in other devices. When your phone is built and first set up, its internal storage and SD card are combined and recognized as one storage system.
Warning
You should not remove the SD card in your phone or replace it with a new one because your Windows Phone won't work properly. Existing data on the phone may be lost, and that SD card can't be used in other devices or Windows Phones.

Seems pretty bogus to me that they're unique to WP7 mechanically. Maybe just the file system is special? Should allow upgrading/replacing I would think.

Source? All we have is rumors but the MS page implies that it's not that easy.
I figure you might get a chance to swap the card properly before first boot, i.e. right after unboxing.
--edit: On the other hand, might these be those new SD cards with additional contacts to allow very highspeed IO. (new UHS-I standard)

yes they are so if you get your hands on one then you are correct before boot 1st time or if you reflash your phone. i read it on a few blogs awhile back will have to find it again and repost it here...

The cards themselves might not be that special other than having a correct SN range or something. The Barnes and Noble NOOK which runs android does this. The main on board memory is a microsd card that you can actually pull if you rip your nook apart, but it wont accept other microsd's even if they were cloned from the original card.

Interesting. Thanks. I guess the difference here is that WP7 is made by a bunch of different people so it would be harder to code in this sort of restriction.
Just saw this in an article about the Samsung Focus...
It's also the only Windows Phone that can expand with memory cards, according to an AT&T spokesman.
All the new Windows Phone 7's work similarly, as they're all based on Qualcomm's 1-GHz QSD8250 chipset with very similar hardware stats, including HSDPA 7.2, Wi-Fi, and a 5-megapixel camera. The Focus has 8GB of memory built in, but an AT&T spokesman at the launch said a MicroSD card up to 32GB could be added, provided you factory reset the phone when you do. If that's true, the Focus can expand up to 40GB.

I have a request.
ANYONE who is lucky enogh to get their hands on a WP7 device. If possible, check if there is a memory card uner the battery.
I do not understand what the **** MS is doing. Currently there's only one phone on the market with more than 8GB storage, and this will be rare, hard to get because I don't think I'm the only one that want one.

Blame it on the hardware vendor. MS state that the min is 8GB, so they all quickly built phones with 8GB naturally. There's no stopping them from building a 16 or 32GB. They should have figured out we'd spend a few more dollars to get those extra storage

This is true, I am in love with what Microsoft have made, but they have been let down badly by the hardware manufacturers. I really hope there is options for more storage ie like the iphone when they go on sale and the 8gb models where just used for showing of the handsets. One bit of hope for this is that the storage capacity is not shown on the wp7 websites handset specs. I would kill for a 16/32gb mozart or omnia 7.

Well, since this isn't surprising anyone then I think MS could have expected it. And I will still blame them because they didn't make 16GB the minimum.

the SAMSUNG FOCUS is currently the only phone that will allow for upgrading the storage you can simply insert your 32 gb sd card before youfirst start you phone on 40gb it is... or insert it at a later time and hard reset and you are good to go...
i would thus jump on the focus but alas i live in england and so we get the rubbish. It seems they are holding all the good handsets for the USA (by good i mean with more than 8gb storage). This is a real kick in the balls as i was hoping i wouldn't need to replace my stolen zune hd as i was going to get a wp7 but it would seem this will actually still have to be the case.
Saying this i did have a little hope with "the device can be picked up in 8GB and 16GB capacities." from http://www.mobiletor.com/2010/10/12/samsung-makes-a-mark-with-new-omnia-7-smartphone/ though tbh i once again don't think this will be the case in the uk.
16GB as a minimum sounds a little high. I am not sure who is really to blame for this storage fiasco, but how can they expect the multimedia users to work with only 8GB storage? And when I say they I mean phone makers and MS.
But an intriguing question would be why does one handset allow the removable storage to be upgraded and not the others?
So my question is about the type/class SD card that we can use to upgrade the Focus. I can only find an SDXC USH-I 64GB card for over $300. If the phone is using some kind of Raid 0 storage implementation, does it require a memory card that costs almost 50% more than the phone will cost?
What kind of SD card will the Focus require?

there are multiple phones with more than 8GB of storage on the market
Several Nokia N series have 32GB of storage N97 and N900 for example and both have the ability to add up to 32GB more
I don't know if anyone has any knowledge about this but the official omnia7 website states 8/16gb. Does this mean we will get a choice like the iPhone or is this them just saying guess what America is getting more like HTC have done.
Omnia7 won't be released in the US.
I didn't realize this, thats good i guess limits this possibility though there is still the Asian market but lets hope. 16gb isn't a great deal but its enough for me where as 8 would mean a lot of sacrifice.

The Omnia 7 is the equivalent of the Samsung Focus which is going to be released in the US. Like many phones, they have different names in different countries. Anyway, in the US it will be sold with 8GB and will be upgradeable to an additional 32GB for a total of 40GB by the user. The internal memory is upgradeable but not removeable and will require a hard reset after the change is made. This is due to the way that the OS will use the additional memory and write files spanning the entire volume.
The question is, will the EU version, a.k.a Omnia 7 be upgradeable aswell?
It would make sense if the upgrading works like spanning devices, you can add drives but you can't remove them.
I don't think it will have the card slot like the focus but the 2 specs seem odd to me. I really hope you can chose to have a larger capacity this is the only thing holding this phone back.

From what I have read and its been a lot, I think there is no SD card slot but there is more than likly 2 versions one 8gb and one 16gb
It's really easy for these companies to ship versions with varrying amounts of memory. The software stays the same and the hardware stays the same except a higher density flash chip.

The first link says 8GB internal with an MicroSD for expansion. Egadget says 8GB internal and they do niether confirm nor deny the MicroSD.
The question is, will it be possible to add a SD card afterwards? It shouldn't be any problem, as long as the filesystem supports it.
I don't know about specs sheets accurancy from quoted sources, but I prefer to believe on my eyes. Simply, I can't see any memory extension slot:
http://www.gsmarena.com/showpic.php3?sImg=reviewsimg/samsung-i8700-omnia-7/phone/gsmarena_026.jpg
And here is the preorder price from clove, a nice number of £500:

I can live with 8GB + Microsoft's cloud service, however this price is a great dissapointment IMHO. It does not correspond to the actuall hardware and software for that device.

look at the far right of the sim card slot just above the battery pins...there is another slot...looks like it might be micro sd...
It's a pictogram for the SIM card. There's no slot there.
Also, the placement of the camera sensor alone shows that it's a different board from the Focus.
I have just talked to tmobile who have the omnia 7 up for pre order and they only know of the 8gb version. It is also about £200 more expensive when compared to the same deal orange have for the mozart. I'm not being funny here am i in thinking is .32 and samoled screen worth £200 more?
Size Confusion
Hi,
I notice that Samsung's site shows the Omnia 7 as coming in both 8Gb and 16Gb capacities. Go to omnia7.samsungmobile.com and click on Specifications link at the bottom of the page. To add confusion though, the Press Kit downloadable from the Media section shows 8Gb only.
In the UK I'm currently on O2 and would like to stay on that network purely because I get to skip queues at O2 venues for gigs. It certainly came in handy at Ozzfest. microsoft.com/windowsphone/en-gb/buy/7/phones.aspx#filter=40 shows that O2 are going to offer the Omnia 7 too - does anybody know if this is correct? I know O2 are beefing up the HD7 in Europe to the 16Gb model so perhaps they're doing the same with the Omnia 7?
It surprises me that T-Mobile are 8Gb-only since the Omnia 7 is Europe-only. Does anyone know if anyone else has confirmed the 16Gb version?
Off-topic: Does anyone know if Orange are selling the phone SIM-free and the cost? £500 from Clover seems rather expensive o_0
I'm going to head to a few stores tonight on the way home and if I find out anything I'll post back.
http://wmpoweruser.com/expandable-storage-confirmed-in-windows-phone-7-required-a-hard-reset/
We have finally had some confirmation, via Paul Thurrot, who is writing a book on the subject after all, that Windows Phone 7 does support the replacement of the installed microSD card (for devices which have them) with others of larger capacity.
Due to the way data is spanned across volumes in Windows Phone 7 however removing the card will almost certainly result in data loss, which means replacing the card means a hard reset needs to be performed to restore normal function again.
Most of HTC’s Windows Phone 7 devices feature microSD cards. Does this change readers opinion on the desirability of these 8 GB handsets? Let us know below.
The Paul Thurrott's post is interesting. But Paul Thurrott did NOT said "Most of HTC’s Windows Phone 7 devices feature microSD cards". wmpoweruser.com did. But I don't know where they had this information.
In Paul Thurrott's post, we can read in the comments
"Paul Thurrott says:

I’m not sure which phones have slots and which don’t, beyond the Focus."
hopefully most phones will have it *leers at htc*

That sounds like it is an SD card with some form of "special" formatting.
So how long before XDA cracks it, and allows you to take your phone's 8GB SD card, and copy/move the data to a new 32GB one and have the phone working just fine?
A regular SD card would be slow compared to the one that comes with the phone. I don't even think they SD cards it requires are available to purchase yet.

I read in an article somewhere that it uses a form of Raid (0 I would think) across the device and it's storage card but it never mentioned a new type of card, although that would make sense
Micro SD for hd7 and trophy, not mozart
This is the first time posting in xda since the forum revamp, but when i realised you guys werent aware of which devices support user accessible micro sd i felt i had to post here.
The htc trophy and HD7 will have expandable memory (the option of replacing memory). HTC themselves are listing memory accessories to buy on their website, however the mozart will not have the ability 9or access) to the micro sd card slot.
important points

Available for Trophy
Not available for HTC Mozart
HTC are selling memory here for HD& and Trophy but you will notice, not for mozart.http://www.htcaccessorystore.com/uk/p_htc_phonecat.aspx?i=204561&c=13

Nice find! I'm really hoping this is true. If that's the case then I'll easily grab the HD7 16GB then upgrade to 32 gb. 48GB in one device, Now I can finally hold all my music without needing a HDD based IPOD/Zune.
Oh crap! No expandable memory for the Mozart means i'll be buying the Trophy.
I'm surprised to see that they sell class 2 cards. Wasn't it supposed to be a very fast card in wp7 devices? If this class 2 card gets integrated with the existing storage it would probably slow it down right?
This changes everything for me! I had my heart set on the omnia7 with the proviso that if i can only get 8gb i would go for the Mozart instead, but now it looks like there is no way i can justify 8gb and the sexy mozart is out and it looks like the omnia is to expensive esp if the trophy and hd7 have expandable memory. I may still look at the omnia if i can get a good deal on a 16gb version otherwise its a case for the ugly phones.

i have not seen this, i was told by one person that it had a card but so far all i have seen is that the focus will but the omnia 7 wont but instead will have 2 versions. If i can have expandable memory or find a 16gb on eon a good deal i will jump on it faster then flash gordon.
mind you i have been using Google to search, could there be a conspiracy theory here lol
I sent an email to HTC and asked about HD7 and Trophy regarding the possibillity to expand the memory, since they sell sd-card as accessories to those models, and i got this answer:
"Dear ********,
you cant use SD card in theese phones, they all have internal memory on 8 GB (europe) 16 GB (asia)
its a mistake on our website, it will be fixed very soon - thank you for your attention.

Maybe the sd-slot is there but they don't officially support it? I guess we have to wait until someone can actually take a look at a device so we can get confirmation.
Wow, no expandable slot for the Mozart, huh? I really liked the way it looks. Oh well.. Trophy it is.
EDIT: At least it's got a 3.8 inch screen!
I must admit I am very disappointed that most phones only have 8 GB memory and a few will have 16 GB.
It's a bit of a flop if you want to compare it to Apple with 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB.
I hope the manufactures change there thinking here as cloud storage is fine if you have an unlimited data plan and do not travel.
But data in Asia is expensive and using data can run into hundreds of dollars very fast.

I just called them and was talking to a lady. I'm waiting for a call-back to know if the HD7 will have accept SD cards and I also made a complaint about the fact that Europe is left behind with a 8gb version of the HD7 in favor of Asia and if it remains so, I'll buy one on the Internet or by somebody I know in Asia. She seemed to be aware of the problem and told me to wait until november the 2nd when it's officially released in Austria. Nevertheless, she insisted to write down everything I was saying and promised me to call me back on these 2 issues.
****TO BE CONTINUED****
f.
it does seem to be a kick in the balls that they treat the European market as less worthy of more than 8gb why are we treated like we don't matter is the bigger question.

Yeah they're a little too expensive for what you're getting, but its still nice to see Microsoft make good on their promise to make approved cards available.
Also could you post those target read/write speeds?
I don't particularly get this. 8GB? Isn't that the size we have anyway?
Or, is the idea for devices which have on-board memory (Omnia?) this could be an additional storage? Or is it simply, look we're bringing out official cards and soon they'll be 16GB, 32GB and 64GB?

One can't help but wonder, though, whether the use of this card, being certified, would be in compliance with the phone's warranty, where other cards would void it (in the event of a bricked phone).
Also, there could be increased quality standards applied to these cards, to confirm that they meet the necessary write speeds. Other cards that don't meet the requirement could still be sold, just not certified. So it could still be a gamble to use another card.

As far as warranty....chances are its not gonna brick your card....plus most of us have done enough modding, hacking, cracking, fenagling, to already void our warranty. Lol

But, other batches of cards that don't meet the write speed requirement could still be sold by SanDisk, and on the outside they would look just like the certified cards (but they would not have the Windows Phone logo on the packaging).
If someone were to use one of those other cards, assuming it was just as good as the certified ones, they could have problems.

As far as warranty....chances are its not gonna brick your card....plus most of us have done enough modding, hacking, cracking, fenagling, to already void our warranty. Lol
And here is the link to those target speeds.

Wrong. R/W speeds were never the issue with SD Card Compatibility. You could get a Class 10 card and it'll still fail. It depends on how well the card performs with Random Access operations because of the way WP7 spans the storage system across multiple volumes.
And ensuring the random access performance of the card works well is harder the larger the card is, which probably has something to do with why most phones are 8 or 16GB. NAND storage would have the same issue if the RA performance wasn't up to par.
The R/W speeds were never a big issue. A class 2 card with decent RA performance can work just fine. They just needed to have certified cards so that people knew the cards would work.
But, all the current phones with SD cards make you void your warranty to use one. I wonder how they will handle this should anything happen...
It's much easier to undo hacking, fanangling, cracking, whatever than it is to replace an OEM warranty sticker that you had to remove/break to put the card in...

All of that you just said is what I meant. You just explained it better.

AFAIK, you don't void your Warranty on the Samsung Focus if you put a card in it. I even had problems with my first one with a card in it and AT&T replaced the phone no questions asked.
That's nice but Microsoft never should have allowed OEMs to release 8GB phones, anyways. Storage is way too cheap to have anything less than 16. There's a reason why Apple discontinued 8GB models of the iPhone/iTouch. They were a waste and in many cases users ended up scratching their heads because 8GB simply ins't a lot of storage.
Those cards are super expensive, anyways.
The only thing that would make me buy an 8GB phone + card is the fact that manufacturers charge like $50-100 to go from 8 to 15 or 16 to 32 GB, which is highway robbery...
As you guys know (or if you don't, you will now) that many manufacturers are releasing phones in which do not have an external SD card and are banging us over by providing really low storage option inside of phones. What got me thinking is that there is a 64GB SD card on sale for 40 bucks at certain retailers and i wanted to buy one and then i came out with the thought that, almost every new phones coming out doesn't have a slot for the SD card. Sure the s3 does but i wont have the s3 forever. What would you guys do?
I know some say, turn to cloud but lets be realistic (at least here in the states). For starters, t mobile doesn't have the best coverage meaning internet is not available everywhere which means if you go visit grandma's farm, you are bored to death and forced to play with cows or ride horses (although riding horses should make you put your phone down lol). Lets say you have glorious verizon with its "great" LTE network and coverage. Well then you are stuck at 2GB or what ever plan you have. point is that you are stuck, so once over the threshold, you are going to get rocked with a fee.
Taking a more personal look, my SD card consists mostly of music (7GB, 800 songs and counting..I like my songs high quality ala 320kbps mp3/aac or 1000kbps Flac), I have 2 nandroids (1 for stock TW JB and the other for AOSP...you know these can make dents on the SD card, apps that require large amounts of data on the SD card.) so right off the bat, i dont need a 64 gb but i know in the future (give or take 2 years, ill HAVe to go that high.)
What are your thoughts? should i just get it anyway? what do you think can be done to get the attention of manufacturers about this issue? any other thoughts?
I'm pretty sure that Samsung has no plans to get rid of the sd card slot.

Wtf? Buy it, and worry about your $40 investment when the time comes.

Yeah just buy it bro. Just know you can only put music videos on the card not apps. My phone storage is almost full because of apps but I have a 64gb card

Being a professional photographer on the side... I will give you this advic - nothing less than a class 10 card, and nothing else besides sandisk or PNY
I've heard enough about how finicky the 64Gb cards can be that I decided to go for 32Gb. 32Gb is only $20. If $20 is still more than you want to spend, 16Gb is like, $10 or less. For $10, does it really matter if you're going to use it forever ? I mean, the phone likely cost many times that and has a limited lifespan of its own.
Just get whatever you're comfortable paying for.
I just bought a SanDisk 32G sd card, but it won't mount. When I try, it said blank sdcard or unsupported files. I tried formatting it but I get the same message. Any help is greatly appreciated.

That's a NEXUS phone. Those specifications are determined by Google, not Samsung.

I am confused why the biggest concern for people when buying these things is simply cost. Sure you can pick up a 32 GB card for 10 bucks... But when it crashes on you a year from now, and the cheap ones typically do, don't come posting a thread here asking why it doesn't mount or why all of your stuff is mysteriously missing from your card. QUALITY people... Not quantity. Its like putting $30 tires on your Ferrari and wondering why it doesn't handle the way it is supposed to. I have had my PNY class 10 card for almost 2 years now with no issues, and yes it was a little more expensive but it is way more reliable than these cheap ass Kingston and no name class 2 or 4 cards that people throw into these things.
Both of the sandisks I have owned have crashed on me. A 16 and 8 GB. Never again will I cheap out on SD cards. Its not worth losing 2 years or a year's worth of data.
I've been buying 32s and compatible 64s every chance I get.
SD slots will be with us for the long haul.

Nexus phones set the standard.
i'm sure more devices will come out without SDCard and removable batteries...
i was actually quite surprised the Galaxy S3 got both good deals, since the Galaxy Nexus had no removable storage..and then HTC came along with their brilliant plan of the One Series...

I totally disagree! I don't think Nexus phones set the standard. I do understand that Google would like to gently nudge us all into using the cloud, but I will go kicking and screaming all the way. I hope they come to their senses and support choice like they should.
Get it.
I think you should get it. You might need it down the road. And even if you don't need it right away, it's still be handy to have. I have a 16GB card now, but I'll get a 32 or higher later on.
And you're right, these lack of SD slots are crazy.
Got the 64GB for Christmas.
If anyone is interested..this is where my sister/brother bought it from...

I think the bigger question is whether we should start training ourselves to use the cloud rather than relying on our sd cards. But I still say the answer is no. Samsung is a big enough player that they can dictate design rather than be dictated to. I don't think they'll abandon these removable parts anytime soon. Maybe in 5 years, Samsung will have their own cloud offering and will force us to use it in lieu of local storage. MAYBE.

I think we really lack the infrastructure to go cloud-only for things like music and movies. The cell towers aren't everywhere - many people can't stream everything even if they want to. People still want to watch movies or listen to music on an airplane without having to pay (or compete for bandwidth if the air carrier is nice enough to let people have at it for free).
I think there are many valid situations when the cloud is simply not an option.
I would buy it. I got a SanDisk 64th class 10 for$39.99 at best buy online a while ago. I am on completely stock with root only and using the apps2external mod by zedomax . Now I have 60gb internal storage and my regular internal storage is now my external storage . Quite convenient...

I got the same card, inserted it, mounts fine, copied a bunch of music to it, works great. However, it doesn't "click" when you press it in, and won't eject! Other than that, works fine. Is there some trick I don't know about? Any advice? I don't want to damage it or my phone in the process of removing it. so far, I've just not worried about it, but at some point I'll want to eject it...

It sounds like an issue with your phone. Do you have the problem with other cards as well? The mechanism to eject its part of the phone hardware and really not related to the card. My card ejects fine. I just have to push it in and it will then be ejected...
