[Q] I'm about to buy GalaxyNexus and... - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

i'm so confused...
I love this phone because of ICS full support, google experience and mostly bug-free... moreover i love the pure interface of android and hate proprietary ui like touchwiz and others...
but there are some reasons that make me think about buy this device or not:
1) The first question is about plastic case and display... are they strong enough? i heard of people that after a month have a scratched display... is it so fragile?
2) Is the PowerVR SGX540 good enough for the HD resolution of this phone? I like play many games with android and would annoying me if most recent game didn't start...
3) Is the photocamera quality good compared to other phone like S2?

The display is rock solid i came from the Thunderbolt which had a plasticity feel display.
I dropped my phone on tile floor I'm 5'10 so it's was I reasonable distance. No cracks and No dents.
The display is gorgeous I must say and you can tune the display to make the colors pop more.
The camera is good I believe here's some shots

1) No issues with mine, but with any piece of hardware, especially a phone this expensive it would be prudent to at least get a screen protector and case. I got the Ringke Slim which is EXCELLENT IMO and comes with a screen protector for just over $20 shipped.
2) I haven't played any games, but haven't seen or heard any issues with this. We have the ability to OC the GPU as well if needed.
3) Camera is meh, but it's a phone. It's definitely not the best out there, especially compared to the 4S, but since pictures are not its primary purpose I have no complaints.

I have 2 scratches in my display now. Think it was from it lying in a backpack next to a book with a bit of sand in between.
I think game performance is very good. But i'm on a non stock rom and kernel. As far as I remember it was also good on stock.
Camera is very fast and takes decent photos. Panorama function is really nice...

1. Only had my phone for 2 weeks but have had matte screen protection and case as soon as opened. Have dropped it but no marks/problems whatsoever.
2. I've played a couple of Gameloft games which seem to be the heaviest in rendering: Asphalt 6 is choppy since it's last update and according to google play it's only experienced on GN. Modern Combat 3 doesnt load at all (common GN/ICS problem). Shadowgun and Six Guns play smoothly.
3. My sister has an S2 and her photos turn out better when taken in low-light situations. However the focus on the GN is unparalleled - the S2 just can't seem to lock on to items up close. Shutter speed on GN is second only to the newer HTC One X. No others come close (not even iphone 4s).

1) The plastic case is strong enough, even the battery cover seems really thin but it is very durable
2) Most game can run on it, but still, some intensive 3D game may experience sluggish on it, e.g. six guns
3) The camera is the weak point of nexus, it take good pictures only in sunny day, even the camera of S2 beat it, but it's ok for me most the time
In my opinion, the real value of Nexus is the number of ROM and support available on XDA, you can easily find ROM that fit your requires!

i have my nexus for 2 weeks and i love it!... im using a matte screen protector but im waiting for my TPU from ebay hopefully ill get it this week...
And like peterlws said theres alot of ROM support on XDA

Hi
1 got only a screen protector, I dont feel the case is necessary on my Gnex
2 I am not a gamer, but "casual game" runs W/o problems
3 for sure is not the best camera, but for sure isn't bad
4 ( imho ) with 4.04 official I have 1+ days of battery with 3g always on ( TIM ) and a lot of push.
ciao

1) i have a £1 tpu case (not silicone) and its fine, fits well and looks nice, no screen protector now after a month and its fine and feels lovely without, i watched some scratch test vids come up well.
2) seems fast enough some live back grounds can cause lag but id say all phones would.
3) camera is pretty decent IMO especially if light is good, panorama feature is wicked and if your steady takes lovely shots.

Especially for 2) Gnex runs Dead Space and other heavy 3D games smoothly. So you can rest assured

1) The first question is about plastic case and display... are they strong enough? i heard of people that after a month have a scratched display... is it so fragile?
Strong enough .. really good feeling about the phone ..
2) Is the PowerVR SGX540 good enough for the HD resolution of this phone? I like play many games with android and would annoying me if most recent game didn't start...
all will work without any issues .. the SGX540 is not new actually as far as i know from year 2007 .. but its oveclocked to 384MHz compared lets say to 200 Mhz from Mali400 (the GPU from S2) .. as example tegra2 in the asus transformer should be around 5,3GFLOPS .. the 200Mhz SGX in the Nexus S was arround 3,2 GFLOPs in the galaxy nexus arround 6GFLOPS .. Mali400 is arround 7,2 GFLOPs (but has problems with polygons - a lot of objects .. so some games can lag) .. btw Iphone 4S is at 12,8GFLOPS has two newer SGX5xx .. so the GPU is not bad actually should be more than enough .. also the chipset 4460 should run instructions +50% compared to the old one ..
3) Is the photocamera quality good compared to other phone like S2?
not so good as S2 .. but still good with good light .. dont forget its not about mpx .. its about the pic quality .. i think its better than my iphone4 ..
hope the answers help

The build quality feels surprisingly excellent to me, solid and not any creaking etc.
The latest games basically run perfect, I haven't seen any lag but I think there's only one or two times it lags. Buts its basically non existent. Its more than capable.

Camera test

Could anyone provide series of photos taken by HTP2? I'd like to compare them with other devices.
More people would be welcome so we can compare even pro2 between themselfs. I've already met one pro2 with blurred and shaded camera. I just dont want to believe all those cameras are so bad.
It would be nice if you took photo in different conditions. Like outside, in the dark, of the text, of the colorful scene, inside the building with poor light conditions etc etc.
Thanks you all.

thank you for your post. Colors are so dull. I tried to increase contrast and it looks bit nicer. Anyway I think pro2 would deserve better camera.
Could anyone else share his opinions about the camera?
I'm a bit disappointed about the camera, I've a Kaiser and the pictures are clearly better than these!...
I cannot belive it!

You can actually make the Kaiser camera ten times better by simply taking off the back cover when taking pictures or video. For some reason the plastic on the camera cover is dingy and blurs it a little.
Some people have actually removed that one plastic piece from the cover or just drilled a tiny hole, personally I couldn't do that.

Well maybe its just the same issue, the backing cover lens. Its supposed to be a 3.2 mega pix.

just an FYI all, i didnt adjust anything. not even sure my pics are set to fine quality. I will check the settings and report back
EDIT: *** ok yup, had all the default settings with no adjustment to any of the lighting
I didnt change the settings in device. I changed contrast in Irfan view just to see if images may look better.
Lets admin that camera sux lot in HTP2. I just want to insure myself that the better result may be achieved by the software changes (like change of contrast for example).
On almost all photos i've seen there is some kind of gray curtain. Because I want to use camera in my next device I was thinking about it and i decided that its enough for me that photos looks good in the device when showing to friends. I dont need extra quality as compact camera could provide.
I was wondering what the video recording capability is on this phone. I'm told it's capable to record in 640*480 resolution these days. Is it any good (crisp / fluid) or choppy and.. well.. reasonably useless like the recordings my P4350 takes (taken into account that that phone records into the size of a poststamp)?
Bottom line: will I be using the feature to take my holland's funniest video and win 10 eurocents?
R_phAn - I can tell you in advance that this phone can't record fluid 640*480 video!
This is a result of a myriad of excuses:
- Drivers blah blah
- Hardware camera Interface to phone blah blah
- Processor blah blah
I've determined All this without even testing out the camera functionality myself... Imagine that!
And people get excited about this phone that uses even more dated processing hardware than the TP1?? (7200a)
LOL!

Here you can check out this sample video (from pocketnow's review)... Looks pretty good to me (and yes, it's in 640x480 )... It's not some fast moving test or something, but in general the video looks good...

Question - Why does the N95 with roughly 2.5 year old hardware record better video than this newly released TP2 phone?
And we as consumers just accept this without questioning this - LOL!

Tell me about it!
Admittedly this is the same across the board for all commercially available WM 6 series devices at the moment but it still stinks.
I am hoping this will change when Snapdragon processors are released as this is said to have at least 720p 30fps playback and record capabilities.
How is the screen, like when you Shake the Xperia X1 during taking a picture the screen won't lag.
A.t.m. on dutty's rom, he has done the same. when shaking the phone while in camera, the camera screen does not lag or get any delay.
Is this also the same on Touch Pro 2?
I'm considering getting a TP2 and sell my Touch HD.

Did the phone put the time stamp on it ? is able to be turned off ?
If you want a qwerty slider phone that is this slim then you have to accept that you cannot get a video camera into it
Phone is always a compromise between size and features and functions. Think about the size (the thinness of the slider part) and then compare it to the phones you say have good camera. They're a lot thicker.
Someday the technology will go further but this is what we have now.

severe overheating on Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4

How true can this be, just read an article that Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 overheating results in back cover damage. Anyone experiencing severe overheating on the SGTS? http://blog.gsmarena.com/case-samsung-galaxy-tab-s-8-4-overheating-results-back-cover-damage/
I just read that too from Android Authority. They don't know if they'll be a recall issue in the coming weeks.

It would be horrible if Samsung didn't test for this. It could have have catastrophic repercussions. To both the consumer and Samsungs reputation and wallet.
My 10.5 became slightly warm once. Looks like a bad battery to me.
I've noticed a lot of heat in my 8.4, in the top right corner on the back. It was on full brightness in blazing sun (on a 100 degree day). It got so hot it was uncomfortable to hold.
Mine gets quite warm, but not to the point of being uncomfortable to hold. Just makes my hands a bit more sweaty in this summer heat.

I remember the original Surface Pro. You could fry and egg on that one.
One benefit of the book cover - you don't feel the warmth.

are you being sarcastic? lol because no duh it's going to be hot as well in 100+ degree weather, at 100% brightness. my galaxy S4 did the same damn thing when i was outside in the summer taking pics; that thing would get HOT. that's just samsungs M/O.
anyway, i've been using it a lot daily and haven't noticed it heating up anymore than a usual tablet would.

Not really a tablet gamer, but thought I would try asphalt 8 and see how hot it gets. It does get pretty warm across the middle of the tab although it does cool down pretty quickly afterwards. I would like to know what conditions the owner put his tab through to make the back cover warp like that. Would hate to think this could happen to me in the future.
Hurry up and make the book covers widely available over here in the UK! !

You want to know hot? The Asus TF701 got hot as hell. You couldn't keep your fingers on it. Although it was all metal. This device didn't come nowhere close to that.
Has anyone tried any of the battery saver modes to see if the tablet runs cooler?
The price you guys have to pay for being an early adopter lol.
I'll just wait and see and then decide.
This is option to delay in investment is worth $$$, in finance, this is called ROV (Real Option Valuation). If you studied option devirative, it is similar to an American call option.

I looked for the Book Cover for 8.4 all over the place but no luck. So I thought of one place where no one would expect to find one. Harrods. Got the bronze cover for my bronze S 8.4
Buttoning the covers onto the back of the tablet was rather scary, had to press pretty hard for the buttons to click in.
The back of the tablet must not be made of quality plastic if it warps like that

These overheating Tab S models are about as pervasive as exploding iPhones - i.e., not very. As far as being early adopters, at the pace technology is moving pretty much every new model of anything has an early adopter flavor to it.
Waiting to buy a tablet until the technology has matured is like buying call options? I've traded call options for 15 years. Don't see the parallel. With a call option you are paying a premium to have the right to buy an underlying stock at a set value by a set future date. As time goes by the time value of that option wastes and becomes less valuable unless the intrinsic value tied to the underlying stock has increased significantly. If the underlying value of the stock does not exceed the strike price of the option by its expiration date it expires worthless. Since you are merely waiting to buy the tablet and not buying a contract to purchase at a set future price and date you have no financial risk and therefore no derivative.
Not trying to be argumentative. Just don't see the analogy
isnt this just one incident? has any other people in this community seen that though?
it would be wise to check demo units too before you buy them check if there dents like that.

I'm guessing it was a faulty unit. Thinking more about it, aren't these tablets and phones supposed to have some sort of temperature gauge limit built in if they get too hot?

Could be an apple fanboy trying to ruin the reputation of our fine kit.
read the full article already. It's a model with an Exyno 5 Octa 5420. and the Russian played 3D games.
Can anyone having the Exyno model test it out?
I haven't got my Tab S, but really love to have one.
This really worries me. From the surface reflection, it looks like Tab S's back cover is a little uneven, thinner than the S5.
My previous tablet was a note 8.0. It was getting warm to the point that it was uncomfortable. Dont have that problem with te tab s 8.4, it stays a lot cooler

The back cover on my 10.5 is perfectly smooth and feels solid, not overly thin. There is nothing cheap feeling about this tablet. Not being an Apple sycophant, I'm not obsessed with an aluminum back. Have felt a bit of warmth on the back but nothing significant. This serious overheating seems to be an isolated incident.
I'd like to see some custom manufacturer come up with afermarket aluminum replaceable backs for tablets. That would take care of efficient heatsinking, rigidize the unit, look nice, and be rid of cheap plastic.
Part of the reason I like my Gpad so much!

Ceramic vrs Prism black

Setting up my ceramic black S10+ for myself, picked up a prism black S10e for my Wife.
Is anyone is wondering how the ceramic build compares to the glass build here are some comparison shots. When I get home I plan on taking comparison shots with my daughters ceramic black Essential phone.

Pictures don't do it justice! I got a white 1TB and that ceramic is a whole different theme!
The high contrast fonts, I dunno it reminds me of the old porcelain white toilet bowls from the 50s.
Also, ceramic is harder to scratch. It needs a Moh #8 pick to scratch so it's not going to get all scratched up from sitting it down even on granite counter tops, etc.
Of course the screen will still break.
Don't like putting it in a case. I have the silver Samsung case with dual kickstands and it's OK.

It goes fast!
4K60 video gobbles space at ridiculous rate.
The Exynos version can do 8K30. Hopefully the bit rate can be set higher than 100Mbps. A lot higher.
Because 4K60 is now beyond that. Increasing the resolution without increasing the bitrate is pointless as your videos start to look like overcompressed youtube crap!
Another thing is memory. Like a Windows workstation with 128GB RAM, it seems to use it more aggressively. It's not uncommon to see less than 6GB free. Yet my 6GB S10E has almost 2GB free doing (seemingly) the same tasks.
It's a beast of a phone (for now).
It would be neat if the foldable phones had a CPU for each side as well as 8+ GB of ram to go with it. Of course it's already expensive enough. A phone that costs close to an entry level professional graphics card is ridiculous.

A CPU on each side would mean less battery space with the bonus of multithreaded performance that is useless on mobile, it's also a terrible way of organising space for heat management, there's no room or purpose for that in mobile, the only multi processor machines are servers and they have them to save on motherboards and power while offering better virtualization.

I have over 400GB left on my 512GB but I expect when I take loads of pics and video of my wedding and honeymoon days out it will soon fill up
Actually I've been using multi socketed workstations since the 90s.
While I agree it would be a challenge on runtime and thermals... with multiple screens we can certainly benefit from additional CPU cores. The A12X is a perfect example. I have an iPad Pro 2018 and by far its the most powerful mobile chip. The biggest thing holding it back is iOS. Android is more multi task friendly and would have more benefits from more cores. It's more of a dream obviously but as things continue to get bigger the the "why not?" factor grows as well.
As for virtualization, I guess some may want to run Windows in a VM on one screen while taking calls on another!
I'll be perfectly honest on folding phones. I'm not really interested. It's not the price as much as the design of the screen. 100K fold lifetime. That will go so fast. It's like giving someone a 5G device with 50GB per month limit or a full auto with two 30 round mags (per day).
The 100K rating...is it 100K operations until failure? So how many before it noticeably changes? So many unknowns. That device is going to age far faster than anything else to date.

General Pixel 6 Pro review: 2 weeks later / Compared to competitors

After 2 weeks with the phone, I wanted to give honest thoughts on the Pixel 6 Pro. I paid for the phone and did not get a free review unit like many reviewers online. I have used man Samsung, OnePlus, and even Apple phones, so I have a fair basis for comparison. Hopefully this helps those deciding which phone to get.
The Screen: 9/10:
Everything is very crisp, color temperature is accurate, and gray uniformity is outstanding. This panel does NOT suffer from OLED image retention like 2020 models did. The screen is not quite as bright or as saturated as the Samsung, OnePlus, or Apple panels. It is still sufficiently bright for me, but others may find they need to use it at 100% brightness often.
Signal Strength / Wireless Connetivity: 7/10
When comparing to the Note20 Ultra, signal strength is not as consistent. It hovers around 2-4 db lower strength. I've not had any dropped or choppy calls, but have noticed slightly slower data speeds in fringe signal areas. The Note20 Ultra outperforms the iPhone 11 Pro Max in signal strength so perhaps it's just good vs great. The earpiece speaker is not as loud as the Samsungs either.
Battery Life: 10/10
With moderate usage, and the phone being on steady 5G or WiFi. it has about 40% battery left after 13 hours. It has incredible standby battery and barely drains at all when not in use.
Build Quality: 8.5/10
The phone feels very solid, and the weight helps give a premium feel. That said, the screen doesn't feel as solid as Samsung or OnePlus models. Like the iPhone, it almost has a pliable feel to it, which isn't necessarily a negative but takes some adjustment. Compare the overall build to an S21 Ultra or OnePlus 9 Pro and it doesn't feel quite as premium.
Camera: 9.5/10
The camera produces outstanding photos every time. With Samsung and OnePlus, one has to let things focus and adjust to get a great photo. The P6P seems much faster and more reliable. Perhaps the iPhone 13 Pro models are slightly better in some instances, but that's splitting hairs.
Speakers: 9.5/10
This phone has a deep rich sound with great bass, similar to the iPhone. Samsung and OnePlus models sound good, but lack bass. I ding it half a point because in some situations, the sound isn't balanced between the speakers.
Software experience: 8/10
Given the clean, bloat free software, the phone is extremely fast and fluid. That said Android 12 doesn't feel complete yet. Certain apps freeze up often and I do get occasional stutters. I'm sure this will be improved in future updates. While "Stock Android" has been the gold standard for many, it lacks many of the great features baked into OneUI and OxygenOS. The simple ability to customize the lockscreen and Always on Demand, or to change the font and icon shapes have all been removed. The wallpaper based color theming is a great concept but has very poor execution (It picks random accent colors unrelated to the wallpaper). As bloated and bogged down as OneUI is, one has to acknowledge the endless customization options offered, especially with GoodLock.
The extra Pixel features really make this phone such as call screening, on hold assistant, now playing, etc. Google really needs to move the power button below the volume rocker. As phones get taller, the high placement is less practical.
Overall: 8.5/10
Many of us have wanted a Samsung phone running stock Android for years, and finally we have something very close. The camera, the speakers, and the software fluidity make this phone stand out a bit, but is that enough? At $899, the phone is priced right where it should be. That said, I can't help but feeling like the S21 Ultra is a more complete and polished package and when it goes on sale regularly, it may be a better choice. A OnePlus 9 Pro running an AOSP rom would probably give a similar experience for less money on sale as well. If one isn't firmly set on stock Android, I'd say wait for the S22 Ultra.
I like the phone a lot and will be using it as my daily driver for now but it's important to know the drawbacks and quirks. I hope this helps.
Thank you for write up!
Informative review! kudos

Amen to that. I also question if I should have gotten an on sale s21 or waited for the s22, but my last phone was a Samsung and this is my first Pixel, so I'm pleased with broadening my horizons. Plus we're going to be getting feature drops for a good while, and faster updates, so I believe this phone will only get better as they address it's growing pains
Good write up

You'll get used to it, it even has benefits to shoot photos.
Since I've been a Pixel owner for a couple of years now, I've grown to like the placement. I hope that Google will never change it, since that would break my way to shoot photos.

You're not wrong, I've been using this phone not even a month and when I grab my old one I swipe from the side to go back like a moron for 5 mins until I remember it has a navbar lol
You were lucky with your network standby battery usage. It feels like I own a 3000mAh battery phone. Google offered me a replacement and I have the same issue with the new one. Imagine network signal consuming 3 times more battery as the display.

General Just How Awesome Is This Thing? (First Impressions)

I've been modding phones since the OG Razr days, and even though I don't do a whole lot anymore, I still consider phones a hobby. I was going to wait for the Fold5 or the Google Fold, but after doing a buttload of research (my normal M.O.), I decided that the Fold4 was ready for prime time. Throw in the fantastic trade-in deals and it was hard to say, no. As I told my wife, I haven't been this excited about a phone in a long time. I have to say, I'm impressed. Haven't had it quite twenty-four hours yet, but it's blowing me away. Obviously, the Samsung screens look beautiful. Sure, the outer screen is narrow, but not unusable. Especially if you swipe type. The inner screen? Well, that's what it's all about, isn't it? It's gorgeous, I love all the real estate, and being able to fold it up and throw it in my pocket is icing on the cake. I plan on reading more, and using it for GPS/Waze in the car is freakin' awesome! I'm really loving it. My only complaint, so far, is the sideways scrolling in the app drawer. Come on, Samsung! Continuous perpendicular scrolling is much more convenient. Thoughts? How do you folks like yours? Tell us what you like and dislike.
Dude, download GoodLock and you will love it even more.

Cool! I stopped rooting with my Pixel 6 Pro. I could ad block without root and with dark mode baked in I was somewhat satisfied, but I did miss Substratum. This is like Substratum without root. Love it! Thanks.

The fold for is such an impressive phone. I'm sorry that I waited this long to dive into the fold arena. I use the flip 3 and flip 4 but got rid of those phones and this one takes the cake. I don't think I can ever go back to a regular slab phone again.
coming from a note 9, i don't think i'll be able to go back to a slab phone. i've been holding off buying anything and for the longest time my note 9 was my daily driver. if i wanted to upgrade it, it would be something different. i was almost tempted to get the fold 3 but opted to wait until the fold 4 came out. the outer screen being wider than the fold 3 (ok, just a little bit) and the cameras were the clinchers. my wife got me the fold 4 for father's day after she saw me reading/browsing and making numerous trips to jb hifi to inspect the phone on display. the spen is fantastic and the only thing i lost from the note 9's pen is the camera bt remote and the sound it makes when i take out the pen (my son asked me to change the remove and insert to sounds of a light saber). took me a day or so of fiddling around and setting it up to the way i want it to be. it's now the same layout as my note 9 which suits me. i'm still using nova launcher with a klwp preset for the inner screen. outer screen is using just a static, black wallpaper. goodlock has proven to be very useful as the alternative to one ui's taskbar and it's provided me with an easy power off and screenshot buttons. the only shortcoming i've seen so far is sometimes android auto fails to connect with the phone. i know that an update is on the way to fix this but at the moment and easy work around is to clear up the cache from google playstore. other than that, the inner screen real estate is fantastic for browsing, reading books, vids, and all.
Running x2 versions of Cyberpunk on one device whilst also being able to download and extract saved games files from Stadia (try doing that on a system without an oen file management setup).
This thing isn't a phone, its a computer that fits my pocket!!

Me: Verizon will give me all but $99 back for my Pixel 6 Pro toward a Fold4. I'm going to order one.
Wife: You're getting a new phone? You haven't had that one a year yet.
Guess who's Fold4 is being delivered today. She had her 6 Pro for a shorter time than I had mine.
I'm gettuing annoyed with both the skinny front screen and the crease. I have an Oppo Find N and the crease is almost non-existent, as well as a Vivo X Fold. The outer display on the X Fold is the perfect size, I find the Find N a bit small now (think 2009 size) and the crease is also a hell of a lot better. Both these phones were purchased long before the Z Fold4 and neither crease is getting worse over time.
My perfect foldable would be the X Fold hardware (adding in S pen too) with the Z Fold firmware. And add in a micro SD card slot as well.
Until these phones hit the global market however, Samsung won't do anything about this.

the crease is there to get waterprotection which none of the chinese phones have, I rather have that than not, do you really think Samsung can't make a phone with non visible crease?

I'm with you. Give me the water resistance. The crease is a non-issue for me. I really only notice it every once in a while.
Is prefer the lesser crease. I don't tend to swim with my phone & both the Oppo Find N and Vivo X Fold both work fine as long as I don't dunk them in water. The lesser crease helps if writing on the screen with a pen which I do a lot...
