This OEM Motorola micro-USB charger is supposedly rated 4.75-5.25V 950mA. Is there any reason it wouldn't work for the Vibrant for a high-draw situation (in-car display-on with navigation)?

Should work. Some posters say that 1amp is not enough for in car nav and charging. They recommend getting the dealextreme 2amp blackberry charger.

I use that one - it works. It couldn't keep up with wardrive last night though - drained 3% during a 20 minute drive. Haven't checked the charge current yet, maybe it's not pinned out properly for high-rate charging.

Two meanings -- the app I was using, wardrive and the actual activity -- driving around, logging wifi access points with GPS. Very battery intensive, with the constant GPS updates and wifi scans. Here's the outcome -- https://wigle.net/gps/gps/Map/onlinemap2/
Anyway, probably a good comparison to running Nav and maybe some music at the same time.

Got it, thanks. So you're saying a 950 mA isn't enough.. hmm. I have a power inverter, which has a 5V USB output providing 1A. Wonder if that would be a little better.
I was going to recommend this charger, since when using nav and music at the same time, my battery pretty much stayed the same or gained a few percentage, but now I wouldn't recommend it at all since it started burning today. Just my opinion.
I'm gonna buy this charger from Amazon. It's basically the same one you posted, but from Amazon themselves. Since I got prime membership, might as well buy from them and have a piece of mind sine they got good customer service. Oh, there was one reviewer that had this charger with the Vibrant and said it was good, so yeah.

Why would you buy this charger from Amazon, since it's exactly the same as the one that you already have, which started burning?

I was going to ask the same thing. Not encouraging for me, since I have that charger too... Bought from Amazon of course, but unless the ebay auction was for a fake then it doesn't really matter where it came from.
Anyway, it seems like a decent inexpensive charger to me. I'll have to try nav alone on it next time -- wardriving is very battery intensive, so not really a fair test.

Regardless of what these charges are rated, my guess is the phone will pull around 800mA. 1.1A if the phone thinks it's a wall charger.
Open the file /sys/class/power_supply/battery/batt_chg_current with Astro or some other file manager and you'll see the current being pulled.
In the same location, the file charging_source gives the following values:
0 - no power source
1 - usb power source (with limited current per batt_chg_current)
2 - wall power source with higher current in batt_chg_current)
The car chargers I've tried are recognized as USB sources only. Even when taping off the data pins and plugging into a USB port on a computer the phone will still recognize the source as USB. Which means the charge rate is lower, regardless of the charger's rating.
While I've been happy with my Newtrent IMP120D external battery, I just recently noticed it only charges at USB speed. This happens even with pins 2 & 3 shorted. Can anyone recommend an external battery that will charge at AC speed.

I am using the Sony portable battery, cp-f1L, it shows AC charging.
what are the mah rates with that chargers???? i got max 950mah with a wall charger

decided to give this a try. i came in yesterday and it does in fact charge at ac speed. however, a predicted, only works for the android port. using the apple port, it will only charge at usb speed. i get the same results even using a cable that has pins 2 & 3 shorted internally.
How accurate these things

By the way, check out this thread on how to be sure it's a genuine unit. I hope Aliexpress accepts returns and refunds if it's found to be a fake unit.

It's called the imp70d. I'm using the cable that came with the one. It shows AC charging in the settings.
Edit: I stand corrected, it initially shows AC charging and then shifts to usb charging. weird!! This is sad.
Edit: I just noticed that it charges at usb speed to with my apple 12v charger. I wonder why.

So I've heard that the 2014 will be using a lithium polymer battery and requires 7+ hours to get a full charge. Also I've heard that it's bad to keep lithium polymer's fully charged all the time.
So I thought a good solution might be to get a portable charger, but looking at some I've found that at least one (the Anker Astro E3) cannot charge Asus and Samsung tablets.
Do any of you know of a good charger to have? I want one where I won't have to worry about keeping it fully charged for extended periods of time.
I would say anything that has close to a 2 amp output would be best. The car chargers are hard to come buy with that output but I found this one:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B8MMZY8/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Not sure if it will charge the Note 2014 but it is probably your best bet in a car charger for a tablet. I will test when I get the tablet but it charges my phone super fast due to it being a 2 amp output. Not sure what my phone is drawing from it but it charges it like its plugged into the OEM wall charger. I try to only buy 2 amp chargers nowadays. It's also only $9.99! Thats much less than what I paid! :victory:

Will do. How much are you looking to spend? The one I linked looks nice, but considering it's capacity I dont' know if I'll really need that much so I'll wind up with another device which will probably end up degrading as well. The Anker Astro E3 looked like what I was looking for but apparently it doesn't work it Asus and Samsung tablets. :\

I've read that some portable chargers Ike that don't charge tablets because the require a higher amp output than what phones need. I just got a good deal on the energizer one and it just so happened to work. I will prob wait for reviews to see which ones work with tablets. I think I've read the Note 2014 uses a lithium polymer battery instead of lithium ion...not sure how that will change things. Considering its decent battery life and long charge time I will most likely use it during the day and evening and charge it at night for now. I just want a battery backup for vacations and travel.

Yea that was my plan, but apparently it's not good to keep li-poly's at 100% capacity. It's best to keep it in the 40-80& range (from what someone else on this board has reported. So I'm thinking of getting this one:
http://www.amazon.com/14400mAh-Mult...id=1380857834&sr=8-1&keywords=anker+astro+pro
I'll probably get this one if anything. That way I can charge this thing over night and keep my Note 10.1 2014 in the 40-80% range.
As an update I'm deciding between these three which all advertise to be able to charge Samsung Tablets.

The tablet is 8000 mah. You have to calculate the efficiency with the batteries.
Lets say the battery is 10,000 mah with 80% efficiency.
10,000 * .8 = 8000
That is only one full charge.
My battery is 12,000. So it can charge the tablet and a phone once.

Just for clarification, you are charging the Samsung Galaxy Note 2014 edt right? In the product description under the header "Optimal Use" it says,
"The iPod nano, Samsung and Asus tablets and some GPS and Bluetooth devices are not supported."
Doesn't necessarily mean it won't work, but it probably won't work as well as it could with say, the Astro Pro or 2nd gen Astro 3 models which explicitly say they can work with Samsung tablets.
I'm not as handy as some in the forums...but I can glue things together. Any phone stands out there that would work nicely with the n5 charger and the nexus?

Very pricey, I want it. I'll have to see catch it at a deal.
The Tylt definitely is a looker, but I can't justify spending that much on a charger.
I just want something around $15 - $25 that outputs higher than 1A... I want to at least attempt to come close to the max Qi for the Nexus 5.
The cheap $15 one I have right now is 1A max output (so less of course) and I'd say it charges a little over half as fast as the stock charger.
I don't want to spend higher than that for essentially a glorified usb cable.
Missed out on the tylt deal (also already have the nexus) so I couldnt get one. So trying the diy route
Yeah I'm with you guys, they definitely charge a premium for it. I missed out on the sale too but bought it anyway and I'm glad I did. It's really one of the most convenient accessories if not THE most convenient accessory I've ever bought for a phone/tablet and it's that convenience you pay for. I wish it was cheaper, but still think it's worth the asking price.

Ahhh the heat thing. Yeah, that *can* degrade the performance of a battery over an extended period of time, but I don't see that being a major concern. Your phone gets warmer during gaming sessions or just browsing the web than it does when on a wireless charger so the argument can be made that it's worse for the battery to actually use the phone than to charge it wirelessly. That said, at least in my experience, my TYLT charger doesn't make my N5 or N7 warm at all. And my N5 is on it all the time. Bottom line- use your phone the way you want to, you're going to be upgrading long before your battery dies anyway.
Slightly OT, but does it matter if you plug in your Qi charger into a USB 2.0 port on a computer, or do you need to use a USB 3.0?
I know that the mAh of USB 2.0 is something like only 500mAh, but I believe it still supplies the same 5V as USB 3.0 would. Would a Qi charger go by the 5V input, or would is use the 500mAh max draw rendering the charge time absolutely horrendous?
I don't really know how it works too well. I have my Qi charger plugged into a USB port on my power bar for my night stand. But I'd like to have 2 more, 1 for my desk (hooked to my desktop computer) and another for my notebook.
I'm looking to by a something as the title suggests. I am looking into 3 on Amazon that look good for the price.

If any of you guys used any of these, what is your experience with it? Also if you could provide info on whether or not the Nexus 5 will stick on there until a certain angle or will it slip right off even if you move the charger around. Asking this because i'll be using it in the car also.
Thanks
I have the Lugulake one. It's good, works well, charges the phone in a very similar time to the wall charger and has a decent grip on the phone, not sure how good it'd be in car tho. But.... I also want one of these which I'll be ordering soon for the car -

I have two Lugulakes and they work great. Just to say the unit never gets hot nor does the phone. Good portable device.

I also have the Lugulake and I'm quite happy with it.
I think both of those devices are available on Amazon and for under $50. I'm thinking of getting the first one. Vent mount and I can use my SGS3 with it.

I have one I got on ebay that is 10,000mah and looks identical to the first link. (http://www.ebay.com/itm/141047804367) It cost $37 (looks like the price dropped a little since) and so far I'm very happy with it, though I've only used it a bit when traveling. It does take a while to charge since 10,000mah on a 1A charger is 10hrs. I haven't really carefully tested its functionality though. I wonder if its current discharge limit is lower than it says, though, since I noticed when I had my n5 plugged into it the 2.1A port and under heavy use (games) the phone battery didnt charge, it only discharged slower... I'll have to test more.
