Hi!
I am going to switch to sprint from AT&T because I lost my job. I am going to get onto my mother-in- law’s plan because my wife is already on it. They have a family plan so I was just going to jump onto their plan to save money.
The only problem is that I have a Dell Streak and am so in love with it. I have the awesome stock unlocked factory ROM on it and can tether with an unlimited data plan. It’s a great phone but does seem a little out dated by being a little slow. Also I am tired of paying 85.00 a month for unlimited mobile to mobile, unlimited data, and unlimited testing. I know it’s a decent deal but money is tight at the moment.
The only solution so far is to go to sprint because that is what my wife and mother-in-law are have. The only close phone that sprint has that is close to what I have is the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G. The phone would be 19.95 a month and 10.00 a month for the data for that phone. I am wondering if there is a huge ROM support group for the Galaxy S II if I wanted to say put Ice Cream Sandwich on it stock style with unlock tethering with the sprint network. I know some networks make it real hard to change your ROM’s phone.
The other choice would be just to go with the Samsung Replenish because it seems like a decent phone and has Android capabilities but I just think I would find myself depressed going from an extreme mod phone like the Dell Streak to the Samsung Replenish.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Let me know the ins and outs of moding a Galaxy S II on the Sprint network. And what phone you think would be best. You think the extra 10.00 is worth the Galaxy S II? I just think I will be going for the Galaxy S II because that is what I am used to.
Side note is that I am 8 months from my contract expiring with AT&T and have unlimited data smartphone plan. I was thinking about using an extra lame old phone that I have laying around the house and taking of my data plan by calling in and say I do not have it any more I just have a basic phone and ask them to remove my data plan. This was when I port my number over to Sprint they will only charge me the basic termination fee than the more expensive one because I had a smartphone. Do you think this would work?
Best,

Let me be the first to chime in. The Epic Is certainly the way to go! One of the best Groups on XDA (imho) and one of the best performing phones on the market. Every phone has its downside, ours seems to be 4G speeds, but the upswing far exceeds the down. I Love this Phone!
There are plenty of Roms for the E4GT. Development is pretty good right now. My wife used to have a replenish, because she wanted to be "green". That thing was a POS, there was no support for it, it has a freaking slow processor, no memory, graphics suck, etc. At least go with a dual core.....
Also, you will have to pay the ten dollar data charge for both the Epic Touch and the Replenish. Get the E4GT.

Basically all I want to do on the Sprint network is tether with a mobile hotspot up to 8 devices for free. Install non market apps like the Amazon App Store. And Root my phone. Is this all pretty easy and possible with the D710 that you get from the Sprint Store?
And if I went there today? Would I get the newest version with the newest parts like the silver headphone jack and what not?
Also do you think its a big deal to give up my unlimited data plan on AT&T? Or if you pay the extra 10 dollars with Sprint is that basically unlimited data?
I would change out the roms but that is not entirely to important to me but I would like the option to.
Yes all that is possible and more

Don't buy the phone from Sprint try Sam's Club, Radio Shack or Compusa which all sell the phone for less than Sprint does at this moment... Hey even try Best Buy. If you want to save yourself some money shop around.... Oh yea Amazon too
Don't run off and put ics immediately. Yes its desired and popular with many people. Only problem is, many people believe it isn't reliable enough to trust it as a daily driver. A few people, including myself, feel calkulin's 2.8.1 is the most recent with the best stability and least problems. You can always go stock rooted, but your battery and responsiveness won't be as good as 2.8.1. Grab all the modems and try any of them ek02 or newer. Find which one works good for your phone and area.
Seriously? Do better research.. besides the network, the e4gt is hands down one of he best phone out right now.. completely.. not to mention all you need is a pc, sfhubs one click rooted ics leaks and youll have stock rooted ics.. then you can try one the awesome custome roms or even get an aosp rom with way more customization.. then you can show everyone how your e4gt touch is better than there phones and forget about your streak all together in no time..

On ics new builds have broken it before but someone always gets it running again. I have been using ICS as a daily driver since March with no more than cosmetic or nonsensical issues usually caused by me.

I have a Galaxy Nexus right now and its great but I am just bored with it. I would like to upgrade. The only problem is that I use [GNEX TOOLKIT V11.1.0] Drivers, Backup, Unlock, Root, Recovery, Flash + MORE [SPRINT] which is the best tool around.
I was wondering if there are tools like this or better for other newer phones that I may upgrade to or should I just stay with my Nexus for while?

Easiest phone to root is the OPPO Find 5 that has an unlocked bootloader and to root it all you do is install an app. Best phone at the moment is the Galaxy Note 3.

No idea the phone has just barely been released. It's not hard to root nowadays just follow instructions. Not like the "gold card" rooting procedure with a ton of adb codes anymore.

Hi guys, I have a couple of offers that I can't deciding. First off my phone is literally brand new. Just take it out to root it and flash the cwr. I put my ad up to trade the Galaxy s2. And I've two offer one is the AT&T galaxy s2 +50 and sensation +150. I don't use tmobile data only wifi, can someone tell me should I do this? I thought it a good trade but kinda hesitant. Which one is the better trade?
what are you trying to do?
what do you want to get next?
Hi thanks for replying, I'm thinking about getting the iphone 4 unlock and keeping the extra cash. For some reason my GS2 is not as smooth as I would like. But I really like my gs2. I think once we have a very good custom ROM I think the phone would run better. But I afraid by then the value would decrease. I also receive another offer for and iphone 4 and 50 dollars. I think that's a bad deal. Considering I already spend 50 dollars for the case and screen protector.
eerrrrhhhhh.... then you should just accept the deal for the iphone 4 if that's what you wanted
and don't waste time trading it with other phones, which are even harder to get rid off
I wanted to trade mines for an att gs2, but being stuck on edge is a no go. Anywho, an iPhone will suit you well.
just my opinion id rather go back to my vibrant before the iphone 4...
LOL thanks for replying everybody. I still don't know what I'm gonna do. But the GS2 is one of the most stable phone I have use. The reason I want to trade for an Iphone because I have at least 400 apps I previously download or bought. and I like to use offline GPS.

just trade it in for an iphone 4. i think thats a good deal if the iphone is in mint or near mint condition.
also - there are plenty of offline gps apps for android. im using Navigon now, and have used co-pilot in the past.
Because I'm with tmobile and I have a good deal on this phone... lol.. I was hoping iphone would come to tmobile.. I'm not a fan of iphone.. but love the quality Apps on ios..

Hello...and no offense to you nexus owners, but I was really wanting the the SG3 but big red said that I am not eligible to keep my current unlimited plan if I get one because the 28th is the deadline and my upgrade is the 30th....(sorry had to vent a little).
Are you happy with your Nexus?
Would you buy again?
How difficult to root?
Unlock the bootloader?
I am on a droid X running miui from time to time I will tether to upload files from my tablet and I would not want to loose that...
Thanks and sorry for the rant...
Very happy with my Nexus, best phone I've ever owned. Love the stock experience.
I would buy it again in a heartbeat, but I'd love to have some kind of guarantee that I would win "the screen lottery" to avoid any magenta/yellow issues.
Unlocking and rooting are simple as fastbooting and adb pushing su; the easiest since that's what the Nexus phones are all about.
USB and Wifi tethering are still in the options with Stock, or you could flash whatever ROM you want. It's a Nexus!
The cat says it all. I love these threads

Definitely. Both that I've had are flawless, decent battery life, and the screen... not just the size, but the quality as well are gorgeous. The only phone I'd trade it for maybe is the One X, if Sense was removed, and it worked with 3/4G on T-Mobile.

Yes, for sure. very very pleased with this device.
i am happy with my nexus, i cant see how the One X or S3 be a big enough upgrade for me to buy eithe rone of them.
root and bootloader unlocking were easy, especially if you use the toolkit in the development forums =P. my grandma could have done it for me.
Definitely would buy the Nexus again. I also have a Vibrant running ICS. To be honest, I do want a Note and the SGS III, but the Gnex being so easy to root and flash makes it more fun. I do wish it had a microsd, but I really never needed more than 16 gig as I do not store music or vids.

Had it for about a week coming from a HTC sensation and have to yes yes yes I live this phone and would absolutely buy it again in fact I have a full upgrade in January (I bought this one full price from google) and I won't be upgrading then I probably won't upgrade till the next nexus comes out

Agree^ however imo the sensation was an amazing phone. I loved the cam on it but where the nexus lacks in camera quality the screen size makes up for it. The gnex is a great phone. The way i see it is nexus phone is the big dog. All other phones try to be it. Except the hd2 that phone is just pure amazing.
I dont think we will ever see the "perfect phone"

Only thing that's missing on this phone is a top of the line camera. I came from an SGSII, and had no problem selling my Lumix LX3 as the SGSII was good enough for most things. HTC One X and SGSIII have even better cameras, but now with the Nexus I feel I might need to purchase a digital camera again. Low light is terrible.
^lKeeping in mind we are talking about phones here, not Nikon's
As for the gnex its my dream phone, I tryed my friends and it was amazing. The screens just a bit big, but ive never owned one so I can't criticize yet!

Yes I would buy it again because of the strong community for the device. And how easy it is to root it (my opinion) and the fact that it's first in line.
Thanks guys...I personally wish I could buy one straight from Google but they don't have it for Verizon. If I can't get someone at Verizon to bend a little bit I am going to the gnex in the next week or so.

Absolutely would buy it again. I would not consider buying another phone that is not pentaband gsm. So no sg3 for me. Only problem I thought I had was (incorrectly) thinking it had a weak radio. Turned out it wasn't the phone, it was the pretty battery cover I bought! D'oh! My only real issue is Citibank or google wallet, can't tell which, and even that was fine till I decided to flash a new rom (search before you flash if wallet is important to you). I can't comment on the camera, I use my phone to communicate only, it works well as a video phone, I'm no photographer so don't care otherwise.

Well I know this is gonna mostly be my first and last thread, sorry. But anyways onwards to the question is, is it still worth it to buy one? I've found that my local Koodo's Mobile (Canadian phone provider) is selling the Samsung Galaxy S2 X for $300 dollars off contract brand new. Which it is identical to the T-Mobile variant. I do realize that the phone itself is about a year old, and was again wondering is it still worth it to buy one, or wait until the next nexus phone or flagship phone instead?
My intent for the purchase would be honestly to get a gift for my mom, since she still on an old phone. She isn't too tech savvy, so she'll be using mostly Facebook, Skype, Youtube, Netflix on WiFi, being that the phone is so large, the pricing and all. If not would an iPhone be easier for her to use because of iOS?
TL;DR - $300 Samsung Galaxy S2X/T-Mobile Samsung S2, should I buy or not, or buy something simple like an iPhone for her to use?

I think I might just get it, and if she doesn't like it I'll keep it for myself. Since her contract is about to end soon, so I'll just pay for an upgrade to whatever phone. I have been eyeing AOKP on my Nook Color, that I got in the states, but haven't full commitment and stayed with CM 7.2.
I have another question which is about the phone itself, which I know I shouldn't post, but. What is the recommend kernel and rom if I should even consider rooting it, which I do plan to if I purchase it. If its compatible with Sixaxis Controller, is it strong enough to emulate say something like a PS1 or a N64, is the toolkit the easiest way to root and last question I swear, does do I have to purchase a certain type of adapter for MHL or is it a universal thing?
EDIT: Because I plan to make it somewhat of a gaming hub where I can emulate my favorite classic games, and use it like a HTPC since XBMC is being released I believe.
Aokp is fine running psx, haven't tried n64. Haven't tried sixaxis either. Actually any of the popular roms are fine.... This phone is pretty beastly. If anything you can stick to the provided kernel that flashes with the ROM or tdj maybe eugene? I'm not sure if he has updated his lately. Btw you should really flash a custom ROM if you give it to your mom because stock ics trend to be buggy.

As much as I cannot stand an iPhone, Apples BS,etc. The iPhone is definitely user friendly for basic functions. Apps that we have are free but an IPhone user isn't typically wanting to tether, NFC, or anything else we have as a feature.
I encourage you to buy one used. Maybe that way, you could not give direct profit to the already rediculous "patent thief".

As does T-Mobile. And about previous comment of iPhone being user friendly, android is even more user friendly. Yes d you're but going to hack the **** out of it then I recommend touch wiz miui.

Yeah I've notice the Chinese made MIUI,is similar to the iOS in someways. I think I'll buy the phone brand new for the sake of it, let her test it out replacing her regular phone for a few days, and if she likes the hardware and how the touchscreen works I'll install MIUI for her. If not, no point returning and I might as well keep it, install a rom which I like, and replace my Blackberry. Again like I said her contract is about 6 months away, they'll call her saying "3 Year Contract blah blah blah", which then I'll do the honors of paying for the upgrade myself.
And I do say, the price bought outright blows the iPhone out of the waters.
That's an amazing price for a brand new hercules.. Not to mention it's still one of the best phones you can get.

Get her something easy to use. I got my father a pantech crossover and he just couldn't get it. He was so good with his blackberry so I figured it would be easy. Wrong.
If you do get her an s2 make sure you set it up for her.
If your choices are the S2X and the iPhone, I would take the S2X. You're not gonna find a new iPhone for $300, and iPhones don't have expandable storage. If you want easy navigation try flashing MIUI like mentioned, or maybe JoyOS which is basically an IOS clone.
As long as it isn't rooted with all that mumbo jumbo crud, galaxy s phones are total parent friendly! I jumped my mom into the Android game with a galaxy s 4g and she loves it. Hell, every time I show up with my phone she always gets impressed by it.
300$ is a total steal for what you're getting and you should totally do it!

Just got it on contract with TMobile. I looked at the s3, and couldn't really justify paying $130 more for the s3 than the s2. They are both dual core 1.5 ghz phones with 8mp cameras that take full hd video. Whatever else it has just wasn't worth the extra $. Lots of other people will do the same math.

Hello first I would like to thank you for taking the time to view my thread, it means a lot to me. I appreciate the community. I will cut to the chase.
I am thinking about adding a new line to my plan for my little sister. She is currently on MetroPCS and we figured I could save more by adding a plan to my line (about 15 bucks)
What made this so enticing is that I could possibly upgrade my phone and give her my current phone. I currently have a t-mobile hercules galaxy s2 and I love it. I have owned it for 8 months and its just been so great. Never had an issue and then flashed a rom that made it perfect.
I don't know what to do... should I upgrade and get the Samsung Galaxy s3 and give my younger sister my S2?? She is 15 and I was planning on giving her the Blaze 4G but the development for that phone is rubbish.
She has saved 150 for her new phone so I would just have to pay the rest.
What would you do?
Can you tell me the pros of the S3?? Can I somehow transfer my text messages from my s2 to my s3 with titanium backup???????
Edit: How is development for the t-mobile SG3 going so far? I hear it isn't as good as the other American or international variants.

My life for Aiur
Im not sure about the text msgs, though if you do upgrade, it won't hurt to try. Ive never used the S2 so don't know much about the comparison. I can say that I love the S3 though! It has been a fantastic phone so far. I think most here would agree. I seriously doubt you'd be disappointed.
One other thing to consider. If you're adding a line, you'll may be able to get a good deal if you call customer loyalty. Also, regardless of that, if you're unhappy with the phone, won't yours be due for upgrading after a while? Then you can get the next big thing and give your sister the S3.

I had that galaxy s2 from T-Mobile before I have to say its a good phone but the s3 is a great buy hands down has a lot of features and over all phone is freakn awsome

YES! Get the GS3. Dont get me wrong, the GS2 was probably the best phone i have ever owned when it was running Jedi Mind Tricks rom, but i sold mine last tuesday to buy my S3 and this phone out the box is pretty much perfect. U wont regret it at all man.
The GS3 is a remarkable phone and you should get it. Regarding transfer of your sms data, TB won't do it but there are apps that can do it. Try SMS backup and restore in the market.
Its a way better phone, get the S3.

It just depends upon whether you're willing to wait. If the upgrade and wait and the line could be opened first.. I would consider seeing what will be coming up in the near future. Also the s3 price will probably drop more.. if nothing of interest actually comes up.
I liked my Galaxy SII a lot, I thought my Galaxy Nexus was alright, but more of a sidestep. However, I LOVE My Galaxy SIII. It's a more solid phone than the two previously mentioned in every form.
So my vote is yes.

Cpu seems to bog down before it's useful in all honesty. Still the best phone I've ever had and I think the optimizations that qualcomm develops will send this cpu to the moon performance wise. We are already benching much much higher than originally.

Get the s3. I loved my Hercules, but I gave it to my mom and got a white s3.

Don't buy this phone. Wait for the new iPhone 5. Galaxy S3 will be obsolete!

No. Bunch of new phones will be out for the holidays.
Buy it and try it out for 14 days(30 in CA). If you don't like it, return it.

Buy S3.
The S3 is better spec-wise than the S2. As newageoutlaw says above this post, try it out for few weeks, then if you don't like, return. Also, did you know that METRO PCS will now start selling the s3? I also heard they have 4G (I don't know if it's LTE or not), with unlimited talk, text & data for $55 a month. You might to check it out.
Okay, I'm currently rocking the HTC One S on Tmobile USA. I'm thinking about getting the SGSiii for the upgrade fee (~280USD). I have a few good reasons for wanting to switch, like this device having more memory (big one) and I like big devices.
I was wondering, would you guys recommend this device. More specifically, would you recommend it developer-wise (IE: good development / support. I hear this device has official CM10/10.1 support)? I know there must be other threads but they are buried and old . I should not wait for any other secret device to be released soon
Just one question as well, does this phone actually have sdcard support and does it work well with demanding tasks such as storing game files on teh SD?
Thanks for the help. Hope to be a good part of this community. PS: I know a few of your devs who used to have the One S

If you can, hold off for a little more. The s3 is good but in about 3 months, the next s family will probably be announced. If you can hold of, if not, then shell for the note 2. If not possible, the s3 is a good device. I said note 2 because of the battery life and screen.

One more thing, will I need a data plan on the line I am upgrading to get this device at tmo for contact extension price? Thanks again.

Correct me if I'm wrong fellow xda members -- you most likely will be required to add a data plan when signing a new contract or upgrading through t-mobile. I heard they took out the 200mb plan and now require people to get the 2gb at the very least.

Optional for the value plan. Even if you initially have to get the 2gb plan you can always downgrade

I know this is getting a bit off of XDA's immediate knowledge, but is it possible to modify (downgrade or delete) a data plan after extending the contract but before the contract expires? Thanks.

Yes there is. When I first got my GS3, I ended up modifying my plan three or four times to get a certain plan that TMo laid out. You can do if online. Mine was all messed up in the first place because I got my phone at Walmart. I ended up going into my T-Mobile store and fixing it about a month later. Well when I did that, it did extend my contract another month. What's another month in two years anyway? *Shrugs*
To answer your OG question... Yes it is worth it. I've turned 3 people onto this device.

Ive talked 5 ppl into getting this device at least... and none have complained. Its purely amazing. The S4 will be out in next 6 months though, but this phone gives me everything I need so I dont think I will be switching even when the s4 does drop. Normally I'd say wait, but I did NOT like the One S and quite frankly thr One S and the HTC Amaze are the 2 phones that turned me off of HTC. S3 is so much better. If u have the 280 to spare, i'd do it

DO NOT buy the s3. Better phones are coming out in the next few months. Save your money.

S3 supports SD card, I just bought mine 16G for about $15.
Overall, this device is worth to buy. Bigger screen, faster processing speed. and you can flash your own ROM, like MIUI or Paranoid.
Right now, i think it is the best (price, overall) one on the market.
280$ is quite expansive for an upgrade i suggest you to wait a little bit more till it gets cheaper and you wont regret it ...
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
I would get it, I love mine. However, I strongly suggest you shop around first, a quick search could save you a lot of money. For example, Best Buy has the T-Mo S3 for $179.99 right now ($229.99 for the 32gb), and you may be able to find it even cheaper somewhere else.
Don't buy it from tmobile, its cheaper else where like at Walmart. Last time I checked the phone was around 80$ for upgrade . Also titanium grey will be available around January 4th.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Would consider moving to one of their pre-paid plans if I was you.
You may save a lot by spending an extra bit on the phone compared to the lousy subsidising they're offering you while still having you pay raised on-contract rates.
I upgraded from a one s to a sgs3 and definitely prefer the sgs3 and am totally happy with it. If I were u I would consider the note 2, if it's not too big. The sgs4 Will be out in a couple months but that will be the international version that u will have to pay full price for. Plus it probably won't come to US carriers for a couple months after it drops...
Sent from my SGS3
Get the sg3 for that $. i payed a lot more and its worth it.
Just jumping through some hoops...
Thank you guys so much for the help. I am acutally thinking of getting one on ebay so I don't have to worry about adding data to the line this device will be upgrading. I see some on there for about 400 USD.
Anyone have any tips for buying this T-Mo SGSiii on eBay? Anyone know a reliable site to check the IMEI to make sure it's not stolen lol? Thanks again.
One thing to consider is that T-Mobile is no longer subsidizing phones in 2013. How this will effect Wal-Mart's prices, only time will tell.
