I have a Samsung galaxy s2 should I upgrade?? - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Hello first I would like to thank you for taking the time to view my thread, it means a lot to me. I appreciate the community. I will cut to the chase.
I am thinking about adding a new line to my plan for my little sister. She is currently on MetroPCS and we figured I could save more by adding a plan to my line (about 15 bucks)
What made this so enticing is that I could possibly upgrade my phone and give her my current phone. I currently have a t-mobile hercules galaxy s2 and I love it. I have owned it for 8 months and its just been so great. Never had an issue and then flashed a rom that made it perfect.
I don't know what to do... should I upgrade and get the Samsung Galaxy s3 and give my younger sister my S2?? She is 15 and I was planning on giving her the Blaze 4G but the development for that phone is rubbish.
She has saved 150 for her new phone so I would just have to pay the rest.
What would you do?
Can you tell me the pros of the S3?? Can I somehow transfer my text messages from my s2 to my s3 with titanium backup???????
Edit: How is development for the t-mobile SG3 going so far? I hear it isn't as good as the other American or international variants.

Yes get the galaxy 3.

back it up and save it unto your sd card.
My life for Aiur

Im not sure about the text msgs, though if you do upgrade, it won't hurt to try. Ive never used the S2 so don't know much about the comparison. I can say that I love the S3 though! It has been a fantastic phone so far. I think most here would agree. I seriously doubt you'd be disappointed.
One other thing to consider. If you're adding a line, you'll may be able to get a good deal if you call customer loyalty. Also, regardless of that, if you're unhappy with the phone, won't yours be due for upgrading after a while? Then you can get the next big thing and give your sister the S3.

YES! Get the GS3. Dont get me wrong, the GS2 was probably the best phone i have ever owned when it was running Jedi Mind Tricks rom, but i sold mine last tuesday to buy my S3 and this phone out the box is pretty much perfect. U wont regret it at all man.

The GS3 is a remarkable phone and you should get it. Regarding transfer of your sms data, TB won't do it but there are apps that can do it. Try SMS backup and restore in the market.

Its a way better phone, get the S3.

It just depends upon whether you're willing to wait. If the upgrade and wait and the line could be opened first.. I would consider seeing what will be coming up in the near future. Also the s3 price will probably drop more.. if nothing of interest actually comes up.

I liked my Galaxy SII a lot, I thought my Galaxy Nexus was alright, but more of a sidestep. However, I LOVE My Galaxy SIII. It's a more solid phone than the two previously mentioned in every form.
So my vote is yes.

Cpu seems to bog down before it's useful in all honesty. Still the best phone I've ever had and I think the optimizations that qualcomm develops will send this cpu to the moon performance wise. We are already benching much much higher than originally.

Buy S3.
The S3 is better spec-wise than the S2. As newageoutlaw says above this post, try it out for few weeks, then if you don't like, return. Also, did you know that METRO PCS will now start selling the s3? I also heard they have 4G (I don't know if it's LTE or not), with unlimited talk, text & data for $55 a month. You might to check it out.

Trading a Tmobile Galaxy S2 for At&t Galaxy S2 +50

Hi guys, I have a couple of offers that I can't deciding. First off my phone is literally brand new. Just take it out to root it and flash the cwr. I put my ad up to trade the Galaxy s2. And I've two offer one is the AT&T galaxy s2 +50 and sensation +150. I don't use tmobile data only wifi, can someone tell me should I do this? I thought it a good trade but kinda hesitant. Which one is the better trade?
what are you trying to do?
what do you want to get next?
Hi thanks for replying, I'm thinking about getting the iphone 4 unlock and keeping the extra cash. For some reason my GS2 is not as smooth as I would like. But I really like my gs2. I think once we have a very good custom ROM I think the phone would run better. But I afraid by then the value would decrease. I also receive another offer for and iphone 4 and 50 dollars. I think that's a bad deal. Considering I already spend 50 dollars for the case and screen protector.
eerrrrhhhhh.... then you should just accept the deal for the iphone 4 if that's what you wanted
and don't waste time trading it with other phones, which are even harder to get rid off
I wanted to trade mines for an att gs2, but being stuck on edge is a no go. Anywho, an iPhone will suit you well.
just my opinion id rather go back to my vibrant before the iphone 4...
LOL thanks for replying everybody. I still don't know what I'm gonna do. But the GS2 is one of the most stable phone I have use. The reason I want to trade for an Iphone because I have at least 400 apps I previously download or bought. and I like to use offline GPS.

just trade it in for an iphone 4. i think thats a good deal if the iphone is in mint or near mint condition.
also - there are plenty of offline gps apps for android. im using Navigon now, and have used co-pilot in the past.

Worth it to swap from T-Mo SGS2

So someone messaged me about them willing to straight swap their Galaxy Nexus with my SGS2 (T-Mobile). Was wondering if it's worth it and what would be the advantages to me swapping (aside from ics). I've read about some issues with screen banding, cracked screens on the top left (or maybe it was right), and reboot issues. How common are these issues among devices and is there any thing else I should look out for when checking the phone out if I am to swap? Thanks in advance
Edit: Also how would you compare the build quality between the 2 for anyone who's used both?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
If someone is willing to straight swap you with no money on your end, you need to make sure theres not something wrong with their GN... they're taking a big hit swapping straight over.
If it is legit, I see no reason why you'd not take up that offer.
I agree with martonikaj, I would really be suspicious of someone making that deal. The GSM Galaxy Nexus still sales for around $600 on ebay whereas the T-Mobile Galaxy S2 is selling for $400. It's really a dumb trade on their part. The GNex is going to be update more times than the GS2. ICS will most likely be the final update the GS2 will see, whereas when the GNex is on Jellybean, GS2 owners will be waiting on someone to make a rom that hopefully works well enough. Also the T-Mobile GS2 will NOT (not sure about the other GS2's) be getting the wifi display update as the S3 Snapdragon is not compatible. Then there's the difference in resolution...I'll put it this way, IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE. These are just a few reasons to make the switch, there are others but I think you get the point.
yeah i would do this in an instant! i have a tmo galaxy s ii, and i bought the nexus. the S II is just sitting there. id take another nexus haha

Best thing is go to a Verizon store and feel one in hand. You will get a feel of how the GSM version is.
But as others stated if someone is doing a straight swap it sounds little fishy. If you can make sure it is in good condition then it's a no brainier for swapping.
No Verizon in Canada . Good idea though I can just pass by a Best Buy or Future Shop with a demo unit out to play with a bit and decide from there

I went from a tmo sgsii to the nexus and I never looked back! Build quality feels nice on both phones, I liked the back soft touch on the sgsii. But the nexus feels great in the hand. Plus development on the Nexus is awesome. If there's nothing wrong with that Nexus than do it NOW!

I'd make the trade in a heartbeat. Coming from the T-Mobile version of the GS2, everything about the Galaxy Nexus is better. Remember the T-Mobile version is the gimped GS2.

I went from a TMO SGSII to the VZW Galaxy Nexus. The Nexus is better in every single regard, in many cases, much better.
The only way in which the TMO SGSII is better than the GSM Galaxy Nexus is that it theoretically offers better data speed (42mbps HSPA+ vs. 21mbps HSPA+). Obviously LTE on VZW crushes both.
Edit: I should add that I couldn't care less about the cameras, which I never use. There may be a slight difference there. And the Verizon Galaxy Nexus has 32gb of space -- I think the GSM one has only 16gb?
if you're trading GS II for GN without any money it's a steal.
id say do it
hell yeah....the minute i was able to sell my s2, i bought a nexus! so much more development and future proof with updates! we all know how samsung is with updates....and idk about anyone else, but the camera on the Nexus blows away the camera on the S2, in my opinion! it was always so blurry and just not crisp
no offence, but this is sound like what an iSheep will say about the iPhones, but in this case is a gSheep for the Nexus

So you would have to pay him $100 to get the Note? No chance. What makes the Note worth $100 more than the Nexus? Samsungs amazing TouchWiz UI or their lazy update procedure?
Phone for phone without any payment could be acceptable for someone who is ok with that.
But then I wouldn't even take the Note if he was paying me $100, so I'm biased.
Nope , don't do it ..
Now if the $100 wasn't in the picture then it would be a decision worth thinking about or if he was giving you the $100 =P
Stick with the Nexus

Straight up trade or nothing and that's only if you think you could find use out of the Note. I know quite a few store owners who love it especially for their online sales as they can just take pictures of products and doodle on it and send it out to prospective customer.
My father's colleague, who's a Apple guy, switched to a Note also for simply one reason; He could have the text large enough to use it without his glasses on .
There are use cases for the Note for sure, I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss it like most on here would .
On that note, I wouldn't use one personally as again, it doesn't fit my use cases.
Don't do it, especially if you like rooting and such.
Not sure Samsung ironed out the brick bug, but it's not the device to have if you want to run anything other than stock. Even doing a factory reset was bricking them. Ridiculous.
I wouldn't do it either. Just because something retails for more money doesn't mean it is actually worth more. Then Nexus is a better phone, period.
SGN is a super nice gadjet , but Nexus is the most compatible with android , if it was me , I'll *****slap him with his 100 buks and keep my phone. but this is me, maybe you have a different opinion
Sent from my HTC Desire using xda app-developers app
He should be paying you $100 plus the note to begin with, if you do it not only has he ended up with the better phone but he's robbed you $100 , just because the note retails for more new doesn't mean its the better device, look at the iPhone for example its inferior to the nexus but still costs more.
Keep your Nexus, it's still the backbone of Android.

When i thought to buy a new phone, the first on the line was the Note. So i went to stores do "meet" it. First look, i feel disconfortable by its size and start looking other phones, so i saw the Nexus and it was love at the first sight. When i held it in my hand, i knew that i´ll be my phone.
It fits perfectly.
Today i think that if i bought the Note i was regret. Not only because the size, but the OS updates and customizations.
Keep your Nexus and be happy for the rest of it´s days.
(sorry for the english)

Iwouldn't even trade for the s3 personally, I love this phone
I have both and if its the ATT version its worth it. The dev support over there isnt bad and once you get used to the size, which I did very quickly, I don't even use the nexus anymore as the screen is so much more vibrant. Just slap on an AOSP rom and it turns the note into a great phone/tablet.

In my opinion the only S3 worht having is the international version as the US versions have been nerfed as they usually are by us carriers.
As to the OP keep your Nexus, I have friends who have the Note and they love it but development on it is nonexistant in comparison to the Nexus, heck my old Vibrant has more development going on right now.

Is it still worth it to buy?

Well I know this is gonna mostly be my first and last thread, sorry. But anyways onwards to the question is, is it still worth it to buy one? I've found that my local Koodo's Mobile (Canadian phone provider) is selling the Samsung Galaxy S2 X for $300 dollars off contract brand new. Which it is identical to the T-Mobile variant. I do realize that the phone itself is about a year old, and was again wondering is it still worth it to buy one, or wait until the next nexus phone or flagship phone instead?
My intent for the purchase would be honestly to get a gift for my mom, since she still on an old phone. She isn't too tech savvy, so she'll be using mostly Facebook, Skype, Youtube, Netflix on WiFi, being that the phone is so large, the pricing and all. If not would an iPhone be easier for her to use because of iOS?
TL;DR - $300 Samsung Galaxy S2X/T-Mobile Samsung S2, should I buy or not, or buy something simple like an iPhone for her to use?

I think I might just get it, and if she doesn't like it I'll keep it for myself. Since her contract is about to end soon, so I'll just pay for an upgrade to whatever phone. I have been eyeing AOKP on my Nook Color, that I got in the states, but haven't full commitment and stayed with CM 7.2.
I have another question which is about the phone itself, which I know I shouldn't post, but. What is the recommend kernel and rom if I should even consider rooting it, which I do plan to if I purchase it. If its compatible with Sixaxis Controller, is it strong enough to emulate say something like a PS1 or a N64, is the toolkit the easiest way to root and last question I swear, does do I have to purchase a certain type of adapter for MHL or is it a universal thing?
EDIT: Because I plan to make it somewhat of a gaming hub where I can emulate my favorite classic games, and use it like a HTPC since XBMC is being released I believe.
Aokp is fine running psx, haven't tried n64. Haven't tried sixaxis either. Actually any of the popular roms are fine.... This phone is pretty beastly. If anything you can stick to the provided kernel that flashes with the ROM or tdj maybe eugene? I'm not sure if he has updated his lately. Btw you should really flash a custom ROM if you give it to your mom because stock ics trend to be buggy.

As much as I cannot stand an iPhone, Apples BS,etc. The iPhone is definitely user friendly for basic functions. Apps that we have are free but an IPhone user isn't typically wanting to tether, NFC, or anything else we have as a feature.
I encourage you to buy one used. Maybe that way, you could not give direct profit to the already rediculous "patent thief".

Yeah I've notice the Chinese made MIUI,is similar to the iOS in someways. I think I'll buy the phone brand new for the sake of it, let her test it out replacing her regular phone for a few days, and if she likes the hardware and how the touchscreen works I'll install MIUI for her. If not, no point returning and I might as well keep it, install a rom which I like, and replace my Blackberry. Again like I said her contract is about 6 months away, they'll call her saying "3 Year Contract blah blah blah", which then I'll do the honors of paying for the upgrade myself.
And I do say, the price bought outright blows the iPhone out of the waters.
That's an amazing price for a brand new hercules.. Not to mention it's still one of the best phones you can get.

You should be tarred and feathered for suggesting that

Just get her the SGS2 and be done with it, way better phone
Get her something easy to use. I got my father a pantech crossover and he just couldn't get it. He was so good with his blackberry so I figured it would be easy. Wrong.
If you do get her an s2 make sure you set it up for her.
If your choices are the S2X and the iPhone, I would take the S2X. You're not gonna find a new iPhone for $300, and iPhones don't have expandable storage. If you want easy navigation try flashing MIUI like mentioned, or maybe JoyOS which is basically an IOS clone.
As long as it isn't rooted with all that mumbo jumbo crud, galaxy s phones are total parent friendly! I jumped my mom into the Android game with a galaxy s 4g and she loves it. Hell, every time I show up with my phone she always gets impressed by it.
300$ is a total steal for what you're getting and you should totally do it!

Parents can handle android! I gave my mom an old Optimus T and showed her how to play words with friends and she's old lol.
Just got it on contract with TMobile. I looked at the s3, and couldn't really justify paying $130 more for the s3 than the s2. They are both dual core 1.5 ghz phones with 8mp cameras that take full hd video. Whatever else it has just wasn't worth the extra $. Lots of other people will do the same math.

Wow, right when I was about to buy it, the Galaxy Nexus comes out for $300 dollars outright at Mobilicity another Canadian phone provider! I'm so conflicted now, okay well, I need you guys to be unbiased and help me choose the better phone deal. I do realize you guys have given me some insight on the Samsung, but damn.

Is it too late to get an SII?

I am wanting to purchase a Samsung galaxy SII for my partner, however with the rise of the SIII, is it too late for it? Would you all trade your SII in a heart beat? Any of you plan on sticking with this device for the next year or two? Any advantages the SII has over newer devices?
Thanks for the input.
Any specific reason for the SII?
To answer it in order...
Yes
Mostly yes, depending on what for.
Yes
Not that I can see.

SII is still good. Just as good as any other phone out there now. Camera is one of the best IMHO. Right next to the iPhone 5.

Yeah just save enough money for the SIII
Well it is because my girl thinks the SIII is too large..she enjoys her Samsung galaxy s blaze 4g but she came from an HTC sensation...so she misses the large screen and better camera.
Trying to find a median.

Don't get her this phone. It requires modding for it to run with no issues. The s3 performs perfectly out of box. Just get her the s3. I have a friend who works at Verizon who dumped her iphone 4s for a GSIII.. she's got relatively small hands and handles the phone with no issues whatsoever. It's just a matter of getting used to it. Just like we all had to do when we jumped from a 3.7 or 4 inch screen to this 4.5 inch t989.

Hmm, how bad is it without modding. She isn't a power user. She checks facebook, uses calendar, pintrest...etc

Stock is good enough for these needs. You could put a stable ICS ROM on it and never have to touch it again. It's a solid phone if you don't need to have the newest and shiniest. I'll have this phone for another two years and I'm ok with that.

I got my girlfriend to switch to the AT&T model from the iPhone 3GS. This is her first Android phone ever and she loves it. I wouldn't recommend the SII only because the SIII works much better out of the box, as stated above. Also the screen resolution is MUCH better and the phone is easier to hold. Yes, it's 4.8 inches but the shape and thinness make it feel much smaller and easier to hold.
So in short, SIII over SII for sure.
They are similar, but if you said she only is on pinterest, facebook, etc. then definitely go for the S2. It is much cheaper and she probably won't notice a difference between the two if she only does little stuff.

I understand the SIII is an overall better phone. No one is denying that, for the price point and what she uses it for, i'd assume the SII is more than effective at providing her with these expectations. How good is the camera on the SII?

I agree, any word on how good the camera is?
The S2 (as far as I know all variants have the same sensor) is fantastic, even compared to the S3. I don't see the S3 as an improvement camera-wise. Everything else, though, is. Especially the software. It really depends how she uses her phone. If she's not technical at all and just wants texting, Facebook, Twitter, and all that jazz, then just get her the S2. I have a tendency to recommend the best.
Get S2 at walmart for $299 without contract
I got mine a week ago at walmart at this price.
It came preloaded with ICS 4.0.4.
Everything works beautifully. Can't beat the price.
They want you to buy $30 prepaid card which you can cancel after a month.
I told them I don't need one and they just let me buy the phone.
You could also get SII that is by family mobile but it's the same phone as t-mobile.
How much was it at walmart?

I plan on keeping my S2 for a very long time. Its a great phone with really on issues. Only thing I wish was a little better was the camera, but besides that, its the best phone I have ever had.
Of course I would get the S3 if I had to choose just because its the newer verison, but in terms on if the phone is great, it is.
I personally think the size and shape of the s2 is better then the s3 and I prefer that.

I think it is 100$ with contract. Last week Tmobile stores offered free S3, S2, it is pity that you missed that sale event.

And ****ty hardware. Naming that phone the galaxy s3 mini is false advertising when the hardware is nowhere near the same.

As a guy who also had to pick a phone out for my girlfriend (who's phone needs are basically identical to your girlfriends)... She would be very happy with the S2.
At the time, I convinced my girlfriend to get an s3, but honestly considering she now really only uses Facebook, Twitter, Email, SMS, Phone, and some other apps (pinterest, youtube, etc.) its a bit over kill.
Same idea with a computer, you can be a student and buy a 1500$ laptop for writing notes and papers... and ya, it will be better, but for what you use it for, the 400$ laptop was a better idea.
I've been using the S2X for a full year now and I still love it...probably one of the first times I've got something and not wanted something newer within 3 months
