FAQ:
How can I update this ROM?
Unless exceptions aren't mentioned, you simply have to flash the latest ZIP-file of the ROM using CWM. You files should stay untouched, but still it is always recommended to make a backup.
Does it support my language?
CyanogenMod (9) is multilingual, so it supports all common language in the world.
How can I update my basebandversion?
a) You can flash the Baseband from here.
or
b) Make a Nandroid backup of your current CM9 -> wipe everything -> Flash the latest stock ROM from your region via ODIN ->
flash ClockWorkMod -> wipe everything -> flash CM9 -> restore data.
What is CWM ?
CWM stands for ClockWorkMod. It is a custom Recovery which enables complete backups (Nandroid backup) and complete restores.

GApps stands for GoogleApps. Google Apps = Google Play Store, Google Calender ...
Due to copyright, CyanogenMod is not allowed to implement GoogleApps directly in their ROMs, that is why you have to install it manually.

The battery of my device drains rapidly fast, what can I do?
After flashing a new ROM you will have to do several(5+) charging cycle in order to get a calibrated battery.
There are also battery calibration apps, such as Battery Calibration which help you with the battery calibration. Long story short: Be patient.
My Data connections / Adding APNs doesn't work, what can I do?
It is a known bug in (Alpha 1). Flash this zip to solve this bug.
What is a funny SIM card ?

Alright, i was just installed Silent Ringer, it does as what i want.
But both Silent Ringer & Flip4Silence only mute Incoming call and not notification.
Im more looking for mute notification because it takes longer to mute(need to unlock screen then touch the status bar) while to mute Incoming Call, just press the volume up/down.
It would be good if the Motion Turn Over feature integrated in CM9 setting without any 3rd party app

what browser and keyboard are you using?
I've had this issue happen to me with several different ROMs (including the awesome CM9 ROM), when using Opera Mobile and SwiftkeyX, maybe it's that that's causing it for you?

first, thank you to arco for this great work, my performance is much better...
Now my bugs:
1.I have a problem with my mobile internet and I read about this bug in some german forums either.(maybe it has to do with the german provider)
The mobile data doesn't work sometimes. I tried to change the settings, turn it off and on again,reboot phone, etc.. You can't connect to the internet and the 3G symbol doesn't appear.
You have to disable the SIM-Lock and reboot the phone. After that mobile internet works fine and you can enable SIM-Lock without any problems.But after a time the problem appears again.
2.Sometimes it says "damaged sdcard", and asks to format it. Formatting the sdcard doesn't help. To solve it, I have to reboot the phone. Then its gone for a while. Sometimes for 5min, sometimes a day.
One question, I can't figure out how to enable vibrating when i get a message?
Edit: Forgot my wish.. please replace the enterkey for the smileykey at the messagekeyboard..
The current CM9 build has problem with the google IME keyboard. The system freezes sometimes while typing. Please check, thx!
Sometimes if I switch to silent mode and plug-in the USB cable the silent mode is gone. Not instantly but after a while.
Anyone got the same problem?

i'm using the stock browser and stock keyboard on cm9
Bug Report (?)
1.) Apps like Turn off Screen and Lock doesn't work. I've tried 4 different apps with the same function, still with the same results. Like, for example, once I activate the app and press the homescreen shortcut, it shuts the screen but turns on again to the screen lock. This is probably because the android version 4.0.
2.) part of the wallpaper can't be seen upon installing the rom but fixed it by setting the same wallpaper again.
3.) volume during phone call sometimes decreases so i always have to change the volume (inc and decrease) in order to increase the volume.
4.) camera doesn't work. given fact.
5.) while typing in the address bar, the words automatically deletes. so i have write again there.
6.) while playing doubletwist player (music player) it's supposed to show full screen view of the album artwork playing. but what i can see is only the bottom portion of the artwork. (screen lock is enabled in my phone)

In Order to find out wheather the compatibility is missing on CM9 or the Apps side, I have made another list with App issues. It would be useful if this apps could be tested on other Android 4.0 versions or CM9.

here maybe one performance problem:
go to telephone/push menu button/settings/scroll
for me, there is one lag while scrolling the first time.
here maybe one bug:
go to settings/developer settings/activate close app (keep pushing back button, to close a app)
then start for example the browser, and then keep pushing the back button so the browser "closed".
then go to taskmanager, and there is still the browser, but without the picture.
I dont know what that means, but I think the browser is closed (someone wrote that maybe the service is still running but i dont know). I dunno if its a bug, but its a bit annoying when the taskmanager is full with apps which I closed.
here maybe another bug:
start opera mini/opera mobile and close it while keep pushing the back button, but it doesnt gets closed, you need to keep pushing the back button two times. (the first time keep pushing the back button -> opera mini/mobile closed for a second but then it appears suddenly and you need to keep pushing the back button a second time)

1. Evaluating the battery drain
Battery life length is mainly something subjective. You can not compare your battery life to someone else’s, even not with your previous battery cycle. It all comes down to how you use your phone : some activities are known to be real battery hogs (like navigation, watching a movie, recording an HD-clip) and will remain whatever you will do. To eliminate the subjective ‘part’ of our process, we need to measure if you are suffering from an unusual battery drain.
1.1- Setting up CurrentWidget
First, we need to have a measure tool. CurrentWidget will be perfect. Download it and install it off the market. Add the widget to your desktop, and when prompted to configure the widget, tick ‘log file’, you can leave the ‘Update Interval ‘ at 60 seconds.
You end up with a widget that displays the current current (…) in mA (milliampere). Basically, this is the battery flow, measured each minute. More importantly, CurrentWidget generates the file ‘sdcard\currentwidget.log’ which contains the raw measures, with their matching time. This file can be open with any text editor (and most file explorer like ES Explorer, or Root Explorer).
1.2- Calibrating the battery
Then, you should fully charge your battery. Not plug it off when the led turns green, but when Current Widget stops reporting a charge (it slowly decreases). You will see that it takes sometimes more than 1 hour after the green led, to fully charge your battery. If your phone is rooted, delete the file ‘data\system\batterystats.bin’ with a file explorer to reset your battery calibration, and reboot.
1.3- Monitoring your battery behaviour
To evaluate the behavior of your phone, leave it asleep (but not shutdown) a whole night, or at least 2 consecutive hours. Do this with Bluetooth, GPS, and WiFi OFF, data connection ON. Then open the log file. A typical and normal log should look like that :

You see here that the battery drain flow is continually between 3-8 mA, with only one peek at 66 mA. It results in only 2 % battery lost in 2 hours. When in standby, your phone should lose roughly 1 %-charge per hour.

It’s good news ! There is room for improvement !
2. Finding what is causing the battery drain
At this point, you know that something is eating up your battery. The key is to find out which setting or application (or combination of both) is causing this.
Open the dialer and press *#*#4636#*#* or download and install ‘Spare Parts’ and go in ‘Battery History’. In the second box set ‘Total since boot’. Then let’s have a look at the first box settings.
CPU usage :
A reasonable repartition should look like that :
If one or more Items are much more CPU-intensive than others, you have identified the culprit (or at least a part of them).
Proceed the same way with GPS and Sensors usage and look for any abnormal intensive processes.
If at this point you have identified one or more processes, go to point 3.1
Finally select ‘Partial Wake Usage’. If your phone suffers from battery drain, it is likely you will have one or more process(es) over represented in this ‘Partial Wake Usage’. It means these applications or settings (if the main culprit is 'Android System') are preventing your phone from going standby, keeping it in a partial wake state, which is obviously less battery-efficient. In this case, directly go to point 3.2
3. Fixing the battery drain3.1- Processes heavy on CPU, GPS, Sensors
- If the main processes you identified are 3rd party applications, there is not much to do. Use common sense : for example if the draining culprit is a backup app, try to disable automatic backup, permanent monitoring, or any option that could use your phone even when standby. Each application has its own settings. Ultimately, you should uninstall these apps, and get in touch with the developper to inform him about the issue.
- If the main processes you identified are or is a stock app (ie HTC Sense account, Gmail, etc.) :
. if applicable, you should delete your ‘HTC Sense account’ which is know to be heavy on CPU
. if you identified Gmail, Picasa, or any other Google service, try lowering the synchronization frequency (or disabling it to see if it improves your battery life)
. stock apps can also drain battery when you installed a Rom over a previous one without completely wiping your system. Keep in mind that the results log I presented at the beginning are obtained with synchronization and stock app with their default settings. So on a healthy system, stock apps should not cause battery drain (again, appart from HTC Sense Account which is crap)
At this point, you should repeat point 1 and have a look at your log to see if things have improved. If the answer is ‘No’, go to point 4.
3.2- Processes preventing ‘deep sleeping’
Some apps or settings can prevent your phone from going standby even if screen is off. It means your CPU can still be used at 100 %, and your battery will keep on draining, nearly as if it was awake.
It the process you identified in point 2. is a 3rd party app, there is not much to do. Use common sense : if the draining culprit is a backup app, try to disable automatic backup, permanent monitoring, or any option that could use your phone even when standby. Each application has its own settings. Ultimately, you should uninstall these apps, and get in touch with the developper to inform him about the issue.
Often, you won’t have much information about what is preventing your phone from sleeping. The main process is ‘Android System’. There has been much discussion over the net about this issue.
There has been many cases reported where WiFi when turned on, would keep your phone in ‘Partial Wake’. Even when turned off, the phone would not return to normal behaviour. In this case the only solution is to reboot with WiFi off. This is not a global issue, I did not suffer from it, but take the time to investigate this path. If you confirm you have this issue, there is not known solution yet. I would advice you to go to point 4.
By experience I can also tell you that installing a Rom over a previous one without wiping all can lead to some erratic issues. You should always backup your important data, then wipe all (data, dalvik, cache, etc) and then only install your new Rom. Some backup apps (like Titanium Backup) offer the possibility to save and restore system settings. This can also cause issues. You should only save data (sms, mms, bookmarks…) but not settings.
3.3- Taskillers
If you use a taskiller, simply don’t. Really. Or at least, disable any option that allows the taskiller to permanently monitor and manage your memory.
Taskillers are supposed to speed your phone by killing tasks when the Memory is ‘full’ or above a defined limit. The problem is that it interferes with Android built-in (and efficient) memory management. You have to understand that what can slow down your phone is not Memory saturation (because Android will start closing apps on its own before reaching this situation), but CPU usage. You can still use a taskiller to see which app are eating CPU cycles and close them. But again, don’t let any 3rd-party app manage your memory. It will only bring you force-closes, battery drain, and various unpredictable issues.
3.4- Radios
I won’t be very talkative on this topic, but if your phone is fully rooted, ENG-OFF and Radio S-OFF, you should really try a few radios. Some of them are reported to improve signal strength and battery life. Write down the version of your current radio (to be able to restore it if needed) and try a few ones. Have a look here :

4. Battery still draining insanely fast : what to do now ?
Ok, at this point, you have not much options left.
If not already done, install a fresh, well-known, and stable Rom (for example LeeDroid or RevolutionHD). Install it from scratch, after having wiped all. When booting and going through the setup steps, untick ‘save my settings with my google account’ (or something similar, sorry my Rom is in French…). This will prevent the Market from restoring the apps you used with your previous Rom.
When fully booted, only install CurrentWidget off the market, reboot, and follow point 1. to calibrate your battery. You are now on stock Rom, with only one app installed (which I certify does not drain battery…).
At this point you should not experience battery drain.
- If you still have an unusual battery consumption, I have no more idea. Get in touch with the relevant Customer Service and ask for a return. You may restore a stock Rom before doing this (for warranty purpose), search the forum to find How.
- If you seem to have a reasonable battery flow (again, between 3 to 8 mA with only a few peaks), install your favourite apps one by one, with at least 30 mn between each installation (and having a look at the current log each time). This will allow you to identify any app that would start draining your battery. If you identify such an app, go to point 3.1. This will take time, but hey, you want your issue solved don’t you ?
5. General tips
Finally, I will try to sum up what to do to preserve your battery life :
- avoid installing a Rom without wiping your system before
- after installing a new Rom, calibrate your battery (point 1.2)
- do not use taskillers
- try to install applications one by one to easily identify a battery-draining one
- don’t use HTC Sense account, it can use much CPU, drain your battery, burn your house and kill your family

Use APKTool to Decompile, Edit, Translate and Recompile an APK

APKTool is an application (made by Brut.all) which decompiles and recompiles android APKs. If you know what you are doing, it also allows you to debug the smali code step by step. In our case it will enable us to build a language pack by translating the .xml strings inside APK files.
You need to do the following preparations (the video outlines these steps anyway):
Download the prepackaged APKTool zip.
Extract them to a directory you will remember.
Extract framework-res.apk AND apk files you want to decompile from the NDT MIUI ROM and copy them to the root directory of APKTool.
This step must be completed every time you are dealing with APKTool:
Open a command window
Navigate to the root directory of APKtool and type the following command:
apktool if framework-res.apk
The output should be:
I: Framework installed to: C:\Users\NDT\apktool\framework\1.apk
This step does the actual decompiling of the APK (I will assume that the chosen APK is Settings.apk):
apktool d Settings.apk
The output should be:
I: Loading resource table…
I: Decoding resources…
I: Copying assets and libs…
After doing that, a new directory with the name of the APK you decompiled should have been created. You need to:
Change into the newly created directory.
Change into the /res folder
Check to see if a values-xx folder exists, where xx is the two letter code of the target language to be translated into. For example, if you are aiming to translate into German, check for a values-de folder. If it does not exist (and chances are that if you are translating into a new language, that it will not exist), you need to create it. Then, copy the arrays.xml and strings.xml files from the /values folder into the folder you just created.
Open these two files (in Notepad ++) and alter the strings (the text in BLACK ONLY). Look out for things that look like %d and %s /’ - Don’t edit these, as they are variables. Also, if you see &, it represents the ‘&’ sign, so feel free to change it. Finally, you MUST be sure to place a backslash ‘\’ before an apostrophe, for example Proxy\’s would be the equivalent of Proxy’s.
Once you have translated and edited your arrays.xml and strings.xml files, save them, and return to the root directory of APKTool.
Open a command prompt to that directory
Enter the following command to recompile your edited and translated APK (assuming that Settings.apk is the chosen APK):
apktool b Settings

However, it will build the apk anyway. These messages mean that some strings don’t have values. It is only an issues if the text im blue includes your translation language.
Open the new .apk by 7zip or winrar, then copy resources.arsc from it to old .apk file (overwite the old resources.arsc one with new one) and
Copy the resources.arsc from the /build directory into the original framework-res from the rom (just overwrite the old resources.arsc one with the new one) and you have a apk file was translate now

Sure, i upgraded it from Rc 3.0
Upgraded from 7.1.0 RC3.0. Everything seems to work except the camera orientation. I've noticed a faster connection to the GSM and 3G network. In RC 3.0 it ometimes took ages to get a connection.
Is it non wipe like CM7 nightlies...
I dont want to redo everything again just to test...
I dont have problems with the previous version, but it is my second phone, only use SMS, calls, bluetooth, wifi and market...

i also had this, try re-running the zip in recovery agn, and reboot it a few times. i did this and it was okay.

I, friend of phiexz want to say this. Maybe phiexz will probably take a little longer time to fix the bugs because of his busy in college. He has so many task to do for his college, so he asked our help to find the bugs on 7.2 and post it here. Once he is not busy anymore, he will fix the bugs for us.
So, we have to be patience.
ok, because not many reacted on the update test, i just installed it over the RC3 without wipe or anything.
First look was ok, but no apps that where installed, so i rebooted again, and all is working, what was already on the phone.
Yes, camera has lost its direction and barcode scanner too .. but heck we know that ... link2sd still ok, wifi and 3G working, root explorer and google / gmail, Go contact, sounds market still working ... so no complaints yet ... other then the known issues oh wait Angry birds seasons still works !!
small correction, Gmail settings did not remember to synch email, but ticked that option again and its working

I cant connect to google account.
Fast discharged baterry, if I use only wifi, and 3G and screen light on 25%, 1% baterry per minute, its very bad. If screen is off, and locked, everything with baterry its okay (baterry is after callibration).
I not prefer ADW launcher, because it is slow, i Installed GO Launcher, and it is very faster than ADW on this ROM.
I've not found other bugs.

Flash the GAPPS

If you notice, after updating, that your media (photos, music, videos...) appears twice in Music and Gallery apps, just clear "Media Storage" data (Settings -> Apps -> All -> Media Storage -> Clear data) and reboot. Then, just wait a long while (it can take even 1 hour depending on the amount of media files you have in your phone).
Always check your IMEI after flashing. If it starts with 0049, you have lost your IMEI. If that's your case, read the installation guide for further instructions.

FAQ
I have flashed the ROM and it works OK, but I can't get signal or make/receive calls/sms. What is happening? You have lost your IMEI. You can get your IMEI back recovering your EFS backup (if you made one) or flashing a Gingrebread Stock ROM (look for one with PDA, PHONE and CSC) with Odin.
I have flashed the ROM and I don't have Play Store. How can I install it? Before flashing, read the instructions! Download the gapps file and flash it.
Does Facebook sync works? No, because adding Facebook sync breaks Picasa sync. The only responsible for this problem is Facebook. You can use third-party apps such as HaxSync for this purpose.
Battery is draining fast. What is happening? Before reporting battery problems complete two charging cycles. If you still have battery problems, ask yourself how long should the battery last with your usage (we are not using an old Nokia phone with 1.0" screen) and discard that is caused by an application. And then, if you still have a draining problem, and you don't know the cause, report your problem attaching:
1) Screenshots of every battery statistics
2) BetterBatteryStats dump. You can download BetterBatteryStats in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809. To generate the dump press Menu key -> More -> Dump to File. The dump file will be generated in /sdcard, and its name starts with "BetterBatteryStats".
3) The output of the logcat (the last one better in a private message). In order to get the logcat output, you will have to enable the Logger in the Semaphore app and reboot if you hadn't enabled it before. The logcat starts from scratch each time you reboot or turn on your phone so, wait some hours before sending it.
Remember: just complaining about battery life without providing useful information doesn't help anybody and will not solve your problem.
My music, photos and videos are duplicated in Music and Gallery apps. It usually happens when you flash the ROM without wipe. To fix that, just clear "Media Storage" data (Settings -> Apps -> All -> Media Storage -> Clear data) and reboot. Then, just wait a long while (it can take even 1 hour depending on the amount of media files you have in your phone).
Suddenly, all apps start throwing FCs. What's happening? Your /datadata partition is full. The best solution is to wipe everything and make a clean install of the ROM. Then, when you have finished installing the ROM, flash one of these fixes: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1541942, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1665742.
Does FM Radio work? Yes, you can download Spirit FM, but do it at your own risk.
Does HW acceleration work when playing videos? Yes, but not with stock player. There are video players in the Play Store that support HW acceleration. For instance, Dice Player.
The LED buttons don't turn on when I have notifications. How can I enable this feature? Download BLN Control from Play Store.
Can I use other kernels such as Devil or MNICS?Yes, just follow their installation instructions as in any other ICS ROM.
Can I customize or remove the toggles of the notification bar? No, you can't But maybe you want to publish a MOD for ICS333?

Hello! This is not AOKP. The base is AOSP, just took brightness slider and fast application killing from AOKP. Probably I will make these two features configurable from Settings menu in the next release.

Theoretically, ICSSGS has not stopped. Anyway, this is a very clean AOSP ROM, just with very few additions that I'm sure improve the user experience. It is impossible to build a ROM that likes everybody, you know Anyway, if you want pure AOSP with my ROM, probably replacing some files of my framework with the ones of a stock Nexus S ROM will work.

I can not upgrade my hboot to 1.3x, help!
You can still run RC13:
This was the last release using Linux 2.6 and will therefore work on older hboot versions. RC13 is stable enough for everyday-use.
What kernel should i use?
Use the stock kernel from boot.img - there is nothing wrong with it. Using a different boot.img or/and kernel will just break stuff.

Although its an AOSP build it does have multi-user support which originally is only available on tablets in AOSP ( users can be added in settings )
Will try it as soon as links posted, thanks for your work! Can't wait for some of the important things like camera to work.
Will have to give this one a shot. Looks very interesting, even though there's some major flaws. Official CM10 has never been stable on the HOX, so looking for alternatives. AOSP might be the solution, in the long run (not currently in that state ).
Good luck with the upcoming work, attempts, hacks, tweaks etc.!

1. You can add NFC to the list of working things. Just tested it with a tag.

Generally about Android 4.2 and its new quick settings (QS):
I wonder why Google doesn't allow us to reorder the grid (by long pressing on the items, much like on their launcher; folders). Would be great if one could add or remove buttons too. Personally I'd like to add GPS + NFC and remove 'Airplane mode'. When tapping on the items their respective activities is started. Convenient sometimes, but it makes QS pretty much useless... On/Off toggling would've been the preferred way I think. Much like how the Airplane mode button works... it doesn't even ask the user if the device should be put in airplane mode (which I think is pretty vital).

Needed to rename rc0.boot_img to rc0boot.img (really any .img name would work) but otherwise booting fine straight over the top of latest CM10 nightlies. I'm no dev, but love being on the bleeding edge

Where do we find the Email app, for non-Gmail mail? I do see the Exchange apk, but no Email apk. Should we use the one from 4.1, or does 4.2 have a new mail client app? Thanks for the awesome work too by the way; so far this is actually impressively stable for a preview (known issues aside, and more testing to be done)!
Compiled the new Email app from source... I guess you can just push it to /system/app.
I have not been able to test it yet though, so i cant say if its 100% working

I found a bug with google now, it doesn't show me any cards relating to my location, it says that I need to turn on googles location services but they're already on.

This is a known issue (see first post -> location services) and is already fixed in the git version.
We will probably release a new build that includes the fix today or tomorrow.
I have the feeling that the dpi is slightly off. On the lockscreen for example the widget area is bigger than the screen and The numberpad to enter the pin is cramped together. (I have no better way to explain it. Sorry)

I got error 7 in recovery, when i tried to install MIUI:
Use Pihlz's Touch recovery.
My WiFi or Bluetooth is not working:
-do a full factory reset in CWM (format /system, /cache, /data, /preload and in advanced Dalvik-cache)
- install XXUBMGA with Odin
- Install Pihlz's Touch recovery then flash MIUI back.

Do you have i9505 or other variant?
If you have another GS4 variant, then copy libril.so and libril-qc-qmi-1.so from a working rom on your device to system/lib/. It should work after this change.

Do you have a sim pin code enabled?
Some people reported that sim pin code is not working at the moment. Try disable it in other rom, and flash MIUI after.

ok i test your method. i copied the file in system but it doesn't work. the rom not root.
i test your second method --> desactive pincode : it work but message of simcard persist : see screenshot
it is not possible to acces to mobile network --> i copy the two files for test but same problem : force close
internal storage just see DCIM folder when you plug the telephone in usb
No 3G/4G network
wifi --> Ok
i return to my backup for the moment. i wait a new build for test
for the next build can you deactivate the bottom bar. i think it not necessary.

Strange, i can download from there, but it's not exist on depositfiles. You can download from megaupload directly. I will add a new mirror for the next release.
