[Q] Screen not fully waking? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a ton of variables, and hope there is one file to delete for a solution. I'm avoiding a data wipe, I don't want to restore the bad setting.
I backed up my data via MyBackup Root, shut down my phone, replaced the digitizer, and restarted my phone; this is when my problem was noticed. When I restart my phone the screen will be back-lit bright. After I force the phone to sleep via the power button or allow it to sleep via timeout, when I try to wake the phone the screen will be dim (fine indoors, unreadable outside, ~30% back-light?).
The Screen Brightness setting is settable and Auto Brightness is selectable, both settings will set and retain the setting, even through restarts.
I am HW V002, after the problem started I upgraded to 4.67 Odex ROM from Brad560 and radios (android 2.3.5, baseband 2.15.00.12.19, kernel [email protected] #1, build 4.67.651.3 CL239674 release-keys, software 4.67.651.3, browser WebKit/533.1 PRI 2.33_003, PRL 60686) I've disabled Power Saver, tried screen brightness widgets, searched every term I can think of. The phone is logging Awake, Screen On, and Deep Sleep time
Thanks for the replys. Obviously a helpful community, I've gotten this far with search.

Assuming all your settings that you've done are correct and haven't looked past anything:
You could use Titanium Backup to back up all your data and apps and settings that you'd like to keep. This might be saving too many settings but you can limit how much you'd want to carry over post flash. Then see if the problem insists once you do a complete wipe put the same ROM or a new ROM on. I use titanium backup all the time as i'm continually flashing Deck's new ICS pre betas. works like a charm. Data wipe isn't that bad of an idea if you know how to back everything up.
If your skeptical of doing a complete wipe you could try wiping the dalvik cache and cache and re-installing the current ROM you have on there now. I'm not sure if this is going to correct your problem but it could be worth a shot.
But i suggest before moving forward
1. Do a complete backup of your ROM through Recovery. You can always go back to this EXACT point. No data loss.
2. Get Titanium backup and backup the data you want.
3. Try something, see if it works knowing you can restore from step 1.

Hey,
dont use auto brightness, do you have any apps that have permission to be playing and over writing with those settings? I would do a full back up and wipe your caches and see if that does anything if not maybe try flashing a new rom or wiping data!
Keep us posted!

Bluetooth not turning off...

Hi team...
hit a problem with my evo.. and its frustrating the h$ll out of me..
Bluetooth is coming on "on boot"...
Running rooted stock Sence with plenty of programs in it..
As usual with things new.. tried a heap then yanked plenty out and now down to the basic's.. Running juice defender and Battery saver plus battery Indicator..
K.. as indicated bluetooth is turning itself on on boot and the only way I can turn it off is to go in to "Airplane mode.."
It seems to turn it off.. well it shows turned off...
Note: it wont turn off via a widget and or in the settings.. as when you hit that button it will "grey out" and show.. "turning off" but seems to hang in this mode..
I checked with Battery Indicator and it shows that bluetooth has been using 23% of the battery today... now thats a fair chunk in anyones terms.. considering how much effort we put in to extending the batts life..
O I do run with a extended batt..
ok.. to my way of thinking.. either I got a bug in the system and or its going like something in this thread from years ago on another pc of hardware...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=227706
K.. what I would love to do is freeze all bluetooth programs and triggers..
so... i kinda need a list to know which ones to freeze and work backwards from there.. (I got all the tools to do this and as said are "rooted")
Bluetooth.apk?
BrcmBluetoothservices.apk?
or.. is there a "hard" shut down I can do?
any help would be great and I am sure someone has had this problem before.. but at this stage over the last week.. Google it and going through threads has not yielded a fix as yet..
few specs on the software..
Firmware : 2.1 update 1
Baseband version : 2.15.00.07.99
Kernel: 2.6.29-789bf291
Build number: [email protected] test2 (really.. whats this?)
Software number: 1.47.706.1
PRL Version : 1.71_003
PRL version: 00202
Thanks in advance..
Did you ever resolve this issue? I'm now having this same exact issue.

No.. not yet..
As said I have to use the Airplane mode to shut it off... but it still shows up in Batt usage as draining .. so I say its not fully off..
I am wondering if it is a "radio" problem and or some pc of software is calling it on boot..?
anyone else get this problem?
You should be able to freeze both Bluetooth.apk, and BrcmBluetoothservices.apk. That'll stop it for sure, it can be done with titanium backup. Also you can try flashing the radio, and I also assume you have tried rebooting?
I have tried re-booting and it still comes on. I've turned off the phone completely and re-started and it still comes on upon booting up.
I rooted my phone a month ago without any problems. I also installed myn's Warm 2.2 (RLS5) without any problems. Nothing has changed since then. Then just last week my spouse noticed the bluetooth on her phone on boot up. Since yesterday this has also started to happen on my phone as well. All of a sudden this has started to happen on our phones for no apparent reason. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Have you tried freezing the app in titanium backup?
No I haven't tried freezing the apks in Titanium Backup, but why should I? I want to find out what's causing this so that maybe it can be fixed instead of just turning it off.
Also, I'm already running the latest radios. I didn't have to "update" to the latest radios for myn's because I was already running the latest radios mentioned. Why would I need to re-flash the radios? Since November when we purchased our phones, and for the last month since rooting we've had absolutely no problems with our phones.
Are you running any programs like juice defender or anything? Because it is indeed off for bluetooth to start acting possessed.
No sir. I don't use Juice Defender, task killers, or any custom kernel. All the apks I have I've downloaded since rooting. Like I mentioned, nothing's changed. Just too weird and very frustrating.
Lawlz, no need for sir..., but have you tried re-flashing the rom lately?
No I have not tried re-flashing the ROM, but why would I if I haven't had any problems until now? What would have caused it to become "corrupted" or problematic so as to cause the bluetooth to come on during boot up?
If I can't find a solution within the next couple of days I guess I'll re-flash the myn's ROM. However, I prefer to find the solution to what's causing the problem. I just don't want to continue re-flashing radios, ROM, etc. every time this happens.
Well I don't know exactly what caused it, and it could just be a random bug. Though re-flashing can solve it, and it might not happen again.
If it helps, my signature is below with the setup I'm running. Maybe something isn't "compatible" and it's just manifesting itself now. Nevertheless, I will more than likely just re-flash the ROM if the problem persists. Thanks for your responses. I will update in a couple of days.
Well I was just about to go into Titanium Backup and turn off the bluetooth apks when I noticed it's not listing any of my apps under Backup/Restore!! I've gone to Menu > Setting > Applications > Manage Applications > Titanium Backup and I've cleared data and cache. Forced stopped it, uninstalled, and then re-booted. I then re-installed, downloaded BusyBox, and still my apps won't show up. I wonder if this is part of my problem with Bluetooth turning on at bootup, but now how do I fix TB?
I am having the same problem with mikfroyo 4.5 randomly now also . I went into titanium backup pro and froze the brc Bluetooth file and some Bluetooth widget but didn't see a .apk to freeze mine has used 18% ugh
I was able to fix the bluetooth not turning off problem by clearing data/cache/dalvik and then restoring to my latest backup before I started having problems. I am happy to report that this solved the problem for me without having to re-flash the ROM again. I don't know what might have messed up the bluetooth, but I'm glad it's fixed. I hope this works for anybody else having the same problem.
As for TB it was showing 0 elements in Backup/Restore. I went to Menu > Filters > Clear > Apply, and then closed TB. Next, I went to Astro > sdcard > Titanium Backup folder > Edit > Select All > Delete. After I deleted all the files in that folder I closed Astro and then went back to TB > Backup/Restore and all my apps were there again, even all the frozen ones. For safe measure I froze the bluetooth apps mentioned above, and then I proceeded to perform another batch backup of all my apps and data again.
Thanks for replies crew..i will play around with it the next few days and report back..its been frustrating me for months and as you can see by the time date on the first post i had thought i had something wrong with the phone..

[Q] Fixing permissions?

So I have been using this feature of Rom Manager quite a bit lately. I've been getting random fc's on apps and core processes over the last few weeks. Clearing data etc never works but fixing permissions solves the problem every time. My question is why? What is happening to the permissions that they need to be fixed? Most recently I installed Honeycomb Fusion and I couldn't add new contacts due to an fc in android.process.acore. Is there a way to defeat this bug before it happens...as in would it fix it if I wiped and returned to stock and then installed my rom and mods? Or would a full factory reset be required? It isn't a major issue but I am curious.
Yes wiping will help most of the time. Never pull your battery before the vibration signal, and get rid of ROM manager. It does not work with Epic according to Developers here.
Do you BONSAI?
As for why the permisssions need fixed: IDK
However the force closes happen when u have corrupt data from an app (IE: Wifi tether 3.0.0 versions) or powering off incorrectly with a no journal rom.
If ur using wifi tether 3.0.0 version, even if it does not reboot ur phone it can and eventually cause corrupted data.
If ur shutting off ur phone incorrectly:
1. 4 button boot into clockwork while phone is on
2. Battery draining and phone shuts off
3. Pull the battery while its on
4. reboot the three finger combo while phone is on
All these can cause data corruption or a certain app can cause it.
Well I am on Bonsai 4.01 and I believe it is still journaling off...I haven't restored a backup since flashing. I always use the power off option when rebooting just to be safe. I have only pulled the battery once and that was long ago and it didn't help the issues I had then...and have reflashed from scratch since then. As far as Wireless Tether I do have it installed but only tried to use it once several months ago.
I only keep Rom Manager since I paid for it and it has the fix permissions option...I know there is an option in CWM but the RM option seems to work fine. I don't use it for anything else.

[Q] what process do I use

Hey just wondering what process I go through to install FoxHound 1.1 Black Ed. 4.0.4.
I would like to keep all data on my phone if possible?
I am running 4.0.2 Android revolution HD2.1.2 GSM.
I believe it's running James Bond kernel 3.0.8-Gaaa2611 dirty [email protected]
base band 9250SCOLd.
Did all this side a while ago and just hoping someone could give me the run down on changing to this ROM?
Do I need to completely reset my phone to stock and start again or can I just install this ROM over and keep all my contacts, photos and settings?
If you're changing ROM a full wipe is in 99% necessary. For the 1% just do it to be sure.
To keep the data I recommend that you're using Titanium Backup. It's the best app for keeping
your data backed up.
But don't back up any system apps. Just your personal apps otherwise you could run into problems.
Contacts and calender data aren't a problem if you stored them in the Google Cloud.
The pictures shouldn't be affected but make a back up just in case.
BTW.
If you're changing ROM always perform a full wipe/ factory reset in the recovery. You can avoid many problems if you're doing so.
If you're upgrading your ROM wiping cache and dalvik should be okay. But always follow the devs instruction if he says otherwise.

[Q] AT&T GS3 Freezing and Rebooting after Stock JB Update / Rooting (LONG)

Help! My phone is freezing / locking up and rebooting several times a day now!
I successfully did the stock AT&T Jellybean update this week when it became available via Kies.
I had no issues with the initial upgrade…it seemed to go smooth.
After a day…or a few hours….I can’t remember…I did start noticing a few issues with Touch Wiz closing or freezing and some other apps misbehaving. I can’t even remember what exactly the issues were.
I was also having some other quirky issues with the phone on stock ICS before the JB update…so I have been meaning to do a factory reset and reinstall everything.
So with the phone being even more flakey with JB I went ahead and did a factory reset with my new JB setup.
After a few hours setting up the phone with all my apps, settings, etc I noticed two issues. Swiftkey would not remain selected as my default keyboard and AT&T Voicemail viewer would not retain any of my account settings after a reboot.
After some Googling I learned that this is a know issue with JB 4.1.1 for many apps…they don’t quite install properly and something happens during shutdown that causes the settings to be lost. The only work around seemed to be:
Root Phone
Install apps
Backup with Titanium or other backup program
Uninstall apps
Restore apps – then they somehow install properly and work
I did this…first time rooting the phone….and the root and work around worked perfectly first time.
But after continuing to install apps and tweak my phone the real problems have now begun.
The phone is completely freezing at random times…in any app or in the TW launcher. It seems to just sit there frozen until I hold down the power key long enough to force a reboot or take out the battery.
There are no force closes or other error messages and I have found no other pattern to the freezes.
So now the phone is almost totally useless. It may work for a few hours…or just a few minutes before locking up. Worse…I have no way to know this has happened if the phone is in my pocket.
I did another full factory reset using the Recovery Mode and reinstalled everything again and am having the same issues.
I fear the root somehow corrupted my phone or one of my apps is totally incompatible with JB but I have to many (~70) it will be very hard to tell which one.
The other issue I am having is the battery is draining in just 4-5 hours even with light use.
Coincidentally….4G LTE was just turned on in my area this week so that would be a factor in both the battery drain and maybe even the lockups. I have a Microcell at home…wondering if 4G LTE and my Microcell are not behaving.
There are just too many variables with a new ROM (JB), fresh rooting of the phone plus recovery app installed, plus 70+ apps, plus new 4G LTE, plus my Microcell.
I don’t know what to try next to get the phone stable or to get the battery use reasonable.
Please post any and all suggestions….
One thing I’d like to clear up or eliminate is the root issue…is there any way that is the cause of my phone’s current problems?
What a mess of a week! Instead of the total awesomeness of JB, 4G LTE, and the fresh experience of using a rooted phone...all happening for me in the same week...I get a total headache and useless phone. Sure hope I can dig my way out of this.
Thanks for reading my long post!
I'd say to flash stock rooted official jellybean from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1968625 i'd then do a Hard Factory reset *2767*3855# then you can install apps that are compatible with jb but not the app data and see how the phone is. also, for signal issues, try using a different modem located herehttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1831898

Thanks for the ideas....had not heard of the "Hard Factory reset *2767*3855#"....how is that different from a factory restet initiated from winthing Android or from the recovery program?
Also - is there any quick / easy way to know which of my apps are supposed to be compatible with JB?
Sure will be a pain to reconfigure everything again.
Should I be safe installing my apps via Titanium backup restores? (as long as I don't restore data)
Also - what about restoring my IMs and call logs from Kies? Is that safe?

Do you happen to have juice defender? I had the same problem, and noticed it only happened when I was on battery. I uninstalled that and it stopped rebooting.

Nope....juice defender...
And my phone doesn't really seem to be rebooting....just freezing up. I have to force it to reboot by holding down the power button for 10 seconds.
About to try a fresh factory ROM install (pre-rooted) and a hard factory reset.
Then I'll add my apps back very slowly to see....
What a pain in the you know what!

Well...I did all that...and no luck. Still freezing up.
I could not actually do the exact *2767*3855# reset...the phone would not respond to that command. So I used CWM to format the SDCard and also did a factory reset there.
Reinstalled my apps carefully and without data restore...boom....phone is locking up all the time again after maybe 12 hours of good operation.
Either this build of JB is not working on my phone or it somehow got fubar'ed during that first upgrade.
My plan now is to restore to factory ICS un-rooted....reset the flash counter if possible....and return the phone under warranty if possible.
Any recommendations for this?
Got replacement phone - still freezing up!

HELP!!!! Please!!!!!
I did a warranty RMA and got a new (refurbed) phone from AT&T. I set it up with stock ICS and it seemed to work fine. I installed CWM without rooting via ODIN and did a Nandroid backup. I then used CWM to load TWRP recovery and did a backup with that.
Then I loaded the stock JB room with root. Tweaked the phone and app settings a little and things seemed to be fine for 1/2 a day. I reinstalled TWRP since the ROM flash replaced it with stock recovery. Things still seemed fine.
So...with JB rooted and seeming to work fine....I booted into Recovery (TWRP) and did a fresh Nandroid backup since the phone was finally all configured and working (apparently).
Well after rebooting from the backup...the phone is acting all crazy again. It seemed to crash my home WiFi network....had to reboot my router. Now the phone freezes or locks up any time I disable WiFi or change WiFi settings.
I am just cursed with the GS3!
Two separate phones with stock AT&T JB with root...one running CWM Touch and the new one running TWRP and both lock up or freeze all the time.
Should I give up and try custom ROMs? Give up on rooting?
I want TouchWiz for SBeam and some of the Samsung apps that I like better than stock...would rather just stay stock with Root.
What can I do to get this phone stabilized with root and JB???
Just did another test...
If I leave my house and walk a couple hundred yards away...as soon as the phone finally loses the WiFi signal and disconnects it locks up.
Seems like all my issues (with first phone maybe too) are tied to WiFi.
Is no one else having WiFi issues with JB? Could it be tied to rooting somehow? For instance...maybe the stock rooted ROM has different modem or WiFi drivers...or different kernel than the actual stock JB ROM I first used via Kies update?

I've got the KIES JB Update, & rooted. I am not experiencing any of the issues your having. It might be helpful if you could post a list of apps & widgets that you have installed, If you have frozen or removed stock files.
It sounds like you may be experiencing some app conflict issues.

I have not frozen any apps or done anything I would consider advanced or risky....
I tried running with what I thought would be just "safe" apps....no luck. I've got most all of my apps installed and did a Titanium Backup so here is a dump of all the user apps backed up:

Having the exact same problems as you. Please help. I'm also considering giving the phone back at Best Buy and having them give me a new one with ICS and leaving ICS on there. My steps are very simple. I had the stock ICS ROM from AT&T and I used Kies to upgrade to stock JB. That's it, nothing else, no rooting, nothing.
I am seeing exactly the same behavior, when wifi switches to 4G or even sometimes when bluetooth comes on, etc I will see the lockup and hang. Have to hold down power button to restart. But I don't think this is completely the issue, because even if I turn off wifi, bluetooth and only leave on 4G, then I still will see random reboots, but a lot lot less frequent. Also, I have always had 4G and I see the battery only lasting 4-6 hrs, so I think this is normal with 4G. I saw this even with ICS.
I have not done any factory reset or anything - I would assume if you use the Kies s/w to update and it leaves your files and apps on there, then it should just work. But I will try the factory reset once I backup my contacts, etc.
I'm a little shocked that people are having this problem with a newly released ROM.

After several re-flashes to stock JB with root and still more freezing with WiFi, etc....I gave up and loaded a custom ROM this morning.
I'm running BlackJelly...and after about 8 hours it seems be be running great so far. It is TW JB-based...and having very few issues with it. Battery is poor but it takes a few days of charging and use I guess to get the battery / phone / ROM calibrated. AT&T Visual Voicemail is not working and the phone shows H instead of 4G LTE...but I'm sure I can fix those issues by searching through the hundreds of thread pages on that ROM is this forum.
Give it a try before you switch to ICS or trade in the phone. You can always flash back to stock un-rooted and use Triangle Away to reset flash counter.
Good luck!
Still stuck with crashing phone!

Well...after over a week of trying it out....BlackJelly did not help me. Still had freezes / lock-ups.
I can't tell if the phone is re-booting itself or just re-launching the Launcher (I us Nova but tried stock and Apex too). The phone appears to re-boot on it's own but the up-time under status would not reset...making it seem like not a re-boot but a launcher reload or something. Pretty much same issues as with stock JB.
So I gave up and tried CM10.1 nightlies....and wow....crashing all the time now. Whereas stock JB and BlackJelly seemed to crash when I left my home or left any WiFi network or even just when I disabled WiFi while connected....CM10.1 crashes all the time while at home seemingly at random. I can get 5 hours of great use...then have it crash 5 times in an hour. Seems to crash a lot in the settings menus.
This is with my second (replacement) phone. I am just cursed!
How do I effectively use a LogCat app or something to find out what apps or services or whatever are crashing my phone? Help!
Read through this whole thread and no where did you ever mention clearing your cache. Clear your system cache/davlik cache and reboot.

Sorry...should have mentioned that. I've cleared the system and davlik cache many times...before and after flashing. I've done full system wipes / resets, formatted my SD card...everything I can think of.
I either have a rouge app that I seem to install right away after clean flashes....or a rouge Wifi router in my house that messes up my phone even when I leave and use other networks...or a rouge ATT&T microcell that does the same....or a rogue LTE area in West Michigan....
Or a second bad phone sent from AT&T. But no form of JB seems to work for me no matter what. Guess I could run a clean install with no apps for several days...and then add in an app a day for the next 2+ months until I find the bad app...if that is even the case.
So bummed with this mess!
My phone freeze after rotation on landscape only with JB. all kind roms of JB stock, cyanogen,, aokp.

Interesting....that might be what I was experiencing....but I never thought that was it....did not notice that cause/effect.
I gave up and went back to stock / rooted ICS / TW...version LH9. Loaded it yesterday and have had 24 hours of great use...no issues.
I miss JB and Google Now...but at least my phone works!
I'm not sure for stock JB but on other ROMs, you could try changing your governor and scheduler.

When on CM10.1 I tried bumping the minimum CPU speed to 484 and 5xx (can't remember the actual numbers)....and the maximum CPU speed to to 14xx and 13xx (again, can't remember)....and this did not help.
Not sure if that is what you meant tho.
Anyway...I gave up and went back to rooted stock ICS (LH9) and the phone is working great. I've given up on JB for now. I will wait for a new major JB release from Samsung before I try again.

Q: The phone keeps freezing when I go into landscape mode.
A: This has been covered many times in the thread, but to reiterate: If you are using the AOSP lockscreen you must disable "Ripple Effect" in Settings -> Lock Screen -> Lock Screen Options

My GPS is screwed after playing around.

I recently rooted and flashed a recovery on my M8.
I was experimenting with the Fake GPS Free app, and mock locations. Worked great.
But when I turned it off (developer settings, mock location-->None), Actual GPS doesn't work right.
Turned it off, removed mock location setting, deleted app, re-installed app, made sure it was turned off, deleted again.
'High Accuracy' sorta works. It gives an approx position. But using something like google maps navigation gives the message 'Searching for GPS...' and never finds it.
I tried a couple of apps 'GPS Status' and 'GPS Reset Com' which reset A-GPS, but it hasn't worked.
'Device Only' fails completely.
Tried clearing cache.
I even flashed a new ROM (Android Revolution HD (6.0)) but no luck.
I do have a factory reset option - but I'd rather avoid it if possible.
Anyone have any ideas of what else I can try?
Restore the nandroid backup you made (you made one right?) before flashing a new ROM or playing with apps from /system
I actually did not make one. I've just been reading up what it is and what I should have done and now I feel a bit silly.
When it said 'backup your phone' I thought it was just the contents (messages, data, media, etc).
Oops!
It's still all a bit new to me..
Anything else I can try?
Backup your data and sdcard content then flash appropriate RUU, if it's not gonna work it's probably an hardware issue.
I have exactly the same problem with my M8. I tried exactly the same steps and still have the GPS issue. I also restored a previously made backup and did a clean flash of CM13... this couldn't solve the problem.
It can't be a hardware issue
UPDATE: I don't know if it would have worked before, but after reflashing I placed my phone on the ground outside, started GPS Status & Toolbox and waited for a GPS signal. after ~1 minute GPS signal was found and it works fine since then. Maybe I was just too impatient before.

Looks like you are new to the modding world. But if you are modding the phone (root, custom ROMs), you should always be prepared to recover from a factory reset (have your data backed up).
And if fact, if you are flashing ROMs without doing a factory reset (within TWRP) you are inviting all sorts of random bugs. In other words, the default wipe in TWRP (data, cache, Dalvik) is always recommended when flashing a new ROM.
