Hey all,
Just got home with my new Nexus - I've been running the Nexus S for over a year and had much fun with custom roms etc.
I've managed to unlock the Nexus and rooted it, I think lol.
Now I'm trying to copy my titanium backups from my Nexus S (saved on my XP laptop) - but I can't copy and files.....infact I cant even see my SD card in my computer.
I think this is normal for the Nexus? It's all done through MTP? Is this correct?
When I try copy and paste a file to my Nexus via the MTP jobby it says unable to copy because it can't be converted with media player and tells me to skip the file....?
I'm using the airdroid program but its taken over 30 mins so far for something that would of took 30 seconds on the Nexus S.
Any advice? I've searched here and google for answers but I'm completely confused now.
make sure you have the drivers installed i would suggest using the toolkit for this action as they seem to work for people with the least hassle
next upgrade to windows media player 11 it will install the MPT for XP
after all that your phone should show up in Windows Explorer
Just make sure that your phone don't have lockscreen turned on. Because when the lockscreen is on Windows will not see your SD card. If you don't want to turn off the lockscreen, the way I do is installing Airdroid and when I want to transfer file I turn it on so it keep your screen always on during transfer.

Hi guys, how come that whenever I try to create a new folder in Galaxy Nexus from my desktop, my connection to the phone will always get stuck. Some files I tried to copy over also face the same problem. But files like video and mp3s are able to get through.
Any ideas guys?

Weird...i have created a few new folders with no problems...Do you have a mac or pc?
Mine a pc.
Anyone any idea?
Windows XP/Vista/7?
I had an issue with this yesterday (Win7). I created the folder in Windows, but it wouldn't see the folder, or it would only display "New Folder" instead of the name I gave it.
Upon going into the parent directory using the device, it read the directory fine. So it could be a read problem, not a write problem.
Windows 7 user here..
same problem here
any solutions?
If you're running on Windows, make sure you have the correct drivers installed, then just for fun, check USB debugging, that usually solves the problems in Windows...
Or, if you really want to be cool, get rid of Windows and use Linux/Ubuntu, because this is the OS, that is used to cook Android... So, it obviously has all the drivers you should ever need
Let me preface this post with a few of the background details.
using Windows 7 (64 bit)
all drivers are properly installed
currently using BAMF Paradigm v1.2
the issue that I sometimes experience has to do with recently created or deleted files. Let's say I delete a file, using Root Explorer. If I then plug the phone into my computer (connected via MTP, Windows will still show the deleted file. But of course, I can't copy it or manipulate it in any way, because the file has already been deleted.
And sometimes the opposite happens. Let's say I back up all my user apps with Titanium Backup. While I know that the internal SD partition isn't wiped when wiping data to install a new rom, I still like to have my Titanium Backups copied off the phone and onto my computer, for further redundancy. What I often do is use Root Explorer to make a zip file from the entire Titanium Backup folder, to make it so that I only have to copy one zip file over to the computer. But if I plug the phone into the computer immediately after making this zip file, it won't show up up in Windows. But I know that the file is there. I can see it in Root Explorer, and I can even pull it off the phone using the Gnex root toolkit (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1400871).
If I wait a day or so, then the files shown in Windows "catches up" with what is and what isn't actually on the phone. In general, this is something that I'm used to now, and I can live with it, because I don't actually need to plug my phone into my computer very often.
My question is, why does it behave like this? I've seen this on 3 different computers (all Win 7 64 bit, and all with properly installed drivers), and across multiple ROMs. So I'm assuming that the issue is with the MTP transfer method?
Thanks in advance for any insight.
I've noticed something similar. Happened to me on:
CDMA 4.0.2 stock ROM, rooted & CWM installed
Windows 7 32-bit
All Drivers (FastBoot, ADB, etc) working properly
I noticed when I installed CWM, made a few backups I could see the folder and files using Root Explorer or any File Explorer (ES for instance) from the Market. Still wouldn't show when connected to the PC through MTP.
After a phone reboot, they appeared.
also happens on Galaxy Tab 7.7
only a reboot will fix it
It seems I can't transfer files via Android File Transfer. On another note (haha pun), I can't believe anytime I want to access my storage I need to load this oddball program, which doesn't even work. I miss USB mass storage.
When I try to copy a file, it tells me "Could not replace file, could not copy file (filenamehere)." This is so frustrating.
Anyone have any ideas? I'm running OS X 10.6.8.
Thanks.
I too am having problems tranfering file to and from the computer. Whats frustrating is that I did not have this problem when I got the note2.
Same problem on the Mac. Had to boot into my windows side. Quite annoying if you ask me
Samsung Galaxy Note II
I have no problem transferring files running latest version of OSX on a mbp... The only time I see any error is if my screen is locked when I connect it, I have to make sure it's unlocked when i connect it for the file transfer program to work. It sees the phone and sd card perfectly fine. I see many people on int version complaining of this too but worked first time for me.
Regurgitated From My Giant Note II
When I connect to my PC, my Note shows up as "SPH-L900". Phone icon, but I can click it to open and use just like any other folder. Absolutely no issues whatsoever moving files to/from sd card.
Do you have the Samsung drivers installed?
I can't copy or move files from the device either. I am able to copy/move files to the device.
Running Windows 7 64-bit with Samsung drivers installed.
I was really hoping to get some expert insight on this... I am bummed... I can't even get this to work on Mac or windows... what's the deal with this MTP stuff?
Samsung Galaxy Note II
I can't even notice a difference when using the mtp. Phone shows up under my computer and when i double click i can see the external and internal sd cards. I just go on with business as usual...
What kernel are you guys using?
The new Perseus kernel seems to have fixed this issue for me.

FIX?
hi guys.. I had this same problem trying to use android file transfer from my 2013 nexus 7 to macbook air.
I remembered I had a password set to access ES FILE EXPLORER on my Nexus 7 and opened the app, typed in my password and that made the trick... No more problems transferring from my Nexus 7 to the Macbook air. Tested with a 800 mb mp4.
Use ADB to transfer on OSX
I know this thread is old, but I just happened upon it. I am using OSX mountain lion, and could not transfer to my mac using the OSX Finder GUI. However, there is a workaround…. ADB PULL! (Note: this is nothing fancy/special, its just using command-line utilities instead of GUI and Android File Transfer)
**You must have ADB installed (Google, its not very hard to install it)**
1. Connect via USB
2. Disable MTP on your phone
3. open terminal and enter:
Code:
adb pull YOURFILENAME LOCATIONONCOMPUTER[optional]

You can use Android file transfer and that way you get the same mtp functions as Windows... Get it from here:

I received the message "Could not copy file [filename]" and "your phone is locked" (dont remember exact wording) from the Android File Transfer app when trying to transfer a file.
The file size was small. The filename didn't seem to matter BUT i have to say: I got 3-4 successive failures with the original filename - which contained a few brackets and parentheses, but then was successful on the first attempt with a renamed file containing no special characters. But later, I was able to copy using the original filename.
Sometimes after unplugging/replugging the phone back in to restart Android File Transfer, I'd see the file appear in the location I copied it to even though it gave me an error earlier.
This did not happen consistently - sometimes it'd work normally, sometimes it'd work but appear to fail with an error, and sometimes it would just fail with an error. The phone was unlocked and on the home screen at all times.
Pretty strange. This is with Nexus 5 stock rom on 4.4.3, Android File Transfer 1.0.50.2266.
Hello,
I am moving from my HTC Desire S to the GN2. I am very happy with the phone and plan to keep it stock non-root.
I am having a hurrendous time copying files, I use a Mac at home and after a few hours messing about I managed to get kies working (Android File Transfer is useless!!)
On my work Laptop I'm running Windows 7 and have admin rights and connect my GN2 and it comes up as a Portable device. I can browse to the internal and external storage and can read the data but not write.
Am I doing something wrong?
why doen't it come up as removable storage??
I did search the forum but couldnt find much on issue with Windows 7 and GN2, plenty on Mac and GN2 but I have that working now.
Thanks
I used this last night and it worked perfectly. I opened up iTunes and just dragged my playlist over. I was browsing through developer options and i noticed a check box "protect sd card" perhaps you have that checked which is preventing you from copying files.

I have a galaxy nexus running 4.2.1. I have been having this issue since the update to 4.2. I am not able to see all files when I have my device connected to a pc via USB. When I navigate to the folder on my PC it can be empty or missing the file I am looking to transfer to my PC. I am not sure if this is a 4.2 issue, but I have not have this issue in previous versions. I am able to transfer files via my websharing app, but these files are movies and are over 1 gb in size on average so I would like to get this working. Let me know what you guys think.
Oh I have this same issue on 4.1.1. This is very frustrating. Sometimes, some files even fail to copy to PC.
Overall, the file listing and copy operations from Galaxy Nexus to PC is very unreliable. The file copy was rock solid and even faster on my HTC Desire.
However, I can see all files and copy them successfully using an app called Airdroid, over Wifi.
This issue should not happen anymore after ICS, but try deleting the .nomedia file in your folders, this file tell the phone to not scan in that folder. Reboot, then wait for the media server to rescan, then plug it in.
If that don't work, clear your Media Storage's data (Settings -> Manage apps -> All -> Media Storage), then delete the folder "/sdcard/Android/data/com.google.providers.media", reboot and let it rescan for 10mins.

That did it! Thanks for the info!!!
I am actually still having this issue on my galaxy nexus running 4.2.1. I am running a stock OS and not rooted. I am not sure what else I can do. After further testing I have come to find that I am not able to access any newly created file on my device when connected by a USB cable to a computer until I restart my device. I even went to the trouble of doing a factory data reset. I am able to access new files from my device or wireless via the websharing app, just not via USB to my computer running windows 7 32bit. I am not sure if an app I have installed could be causing this issue. All I know is I never had this issue with ICS. Let me know what you guys think. I am at a total loss with this.
Had same issue not sure of fix but found if i rebooted computer and device when i plug device in again it sees the new files, its like the computer only sees whatever files are in phone at the point of first viewing phone sd folders, so any changes after that arent registered until computer is rebooted.
I think rebooting gnex also helps embed any changes to files and folders.
Its a hassle but it works
