[Q] Bricked DHD - can't access hboot or anything else - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
i got my hand on bricked Desire HD which seemes to be stucked in sw update loop.
The story goes like this:
Owner of this DHD got notification that ROM update is available ("the official one")
He choose to update it and aparently he did "everything by the book"
After 1st reboot it got to the update loading screen which stuck on aproximatly 30% and didn't move a bit. what he did after, i don't know.
The problem is:
when connected to charge it turns on after a few min. and goes to the loop
after removing battery and connecting it to charger it does it again
But the biggest problem is that when you hold vol down + power button just before phone turns on (after removing battery, returning battery and connecting to charger) it doesn't go to HBOOT but just goes to dam update loop
Can anyone help please, the image of stuck screen is in the attachment of this thread

Can anyone help please
Did anything similar happened to anyone else?

Update maybe corrupted. Take sdcard to pc and remove update.zip from sdcard or format it, if phone included with sdcard. Try boot phone with power and vol+ press down without sdcard?.
Try flash phone PD98IMG.zip "download newest RUU, open it and go to temp folder "C:\Users\****\AppData\Local\Temp\{EFF37DC5-1DC7-478F-B64E-447807C64D80}\{50F2F878-636A-496F-A7CB-544C067E0C4B} in windows 7", find rom.zip, rename it PD98IMG.zip, put it into sdcard root, boot phone with power and vol- press down".
You can correct me if i was wrong on this matter

Thank you for replying but i already tried every methot to enter hoboot or fastboot with or without sd card nor with stock PD98img.zip on the sdcard
Today i found out that this phone is example model and is labeld E30183

Hi,
by holding vol up + power button phone vibrates 3 times and turns on led(green on my Desire and orange on desire HD) i presume that this is some kind of programing interface because my PC reckognized device as a qualcom cdma technologies msm device.
I can't find correct driver or any info with which app should i connect to device and reflash it.
I have already searched trough this forum so if i missed something please provide link to thread
BIG HELP WOULD BE IF ANYONE KNOWS HOW TO PROGRAM, FLASH OR ANYTHING IN THIS CONNECTION MODE
i GOT TO IT LIKE THIS:
1. i POWERED OFF MY DEVICE
2. PRESS AND HOLD VOL UP
3. PRESSED POWER BUTTON
4. AFTER THIS PHONE VIBRATED 3 TIMES AND NOTIFICATION LED TURNED ON
5. i CONNECTED USB CABLE
6. DESIRE HD WAS DETECTED BY MY PC AND SHOWN IN DEVICE MANAGER JUST LIKE IN ATTACHMENT OF THIS POST
THANK YOU ALL IN ADVANCE

I thought the Desire HD is just like the inspire. Can you volume down and power button at same time to enter hboot without pluggin phone into computer? If so see if its s-off (rooted) or s-on (not rooted). You might be trying to flash a non rooted stock rom on a rooted phone or a rooted rom on a non rooted phone. We are not supposed to accept OTA updates on rooted phones, screws phone up.

Thank you Reinaldo33897 for replying but you did not read carefully my posts!
Look at the image in the 1st post - that is all you can get on this phone and no
1. you can not access hboot or fastboot by pressing vol down + power button,
2. there is no reading update from sdcard
All that you can access on this phone is by pressing vol up + power button after it phone vibrates 3 times and flashes led. Then you can connect phone to pc to be detected.
I presume that this is some programming interface but i need to find driver or some appliction to access either system partitions or console so i can remove/edit script that is preventing me from accessing hboot/fastboot

I have tried every thing - combination - to access any of the functions of this DHD. Unfortunatly nothing worked. If anyone can help or provide link to the solution i'd be wery greatful.
Only way you can connect this phone to PC is to hold volume up and press power button and after it vibrates 3 times and flashing orange led you can connect it to PC to be detected. The phone is visibile as a Qualcomm CDMA Technologies MSM in device manager. I have read somewhere that this is Qualcom debuging interface but couldn't find any software to connect trough it.
PLEASE IF ANYONE HAS ANY INFORMATION OR SOFTWARE PROVIDE A LINK OR ANYTHING
THANK YOU ALL WERRY MUCH

SOLVED
Hi all!
I have solved the problem!
As this was some kind of prototype it had diferent HW and update procedures so it stucked in update loop without any usable interface to program. It had diferent motherboard inside so it took my friends 2 h to connect to it and repair it trough Riff.
If any of you ever get any phone that is not stock by aperance DO NOT TRY TO DO ANY KIND OF UPDATE WITHOUT FINDING ALL THE POSSIBILE INFO ON THAT PHONE. THE WORST THING IS THAT THESE KIND OF THE PHONES HAVE SPECIFIC RADIO IMAGE
I did some experimentations on my old Desire and kept bricking it and only unbickable situation was when i forced wrong radio image. Every other brick combination leaves fastboot interface so it can be fixed
P.S. DO NOT SCREW UP BOOTLOADER AND/OR RADIO
This thread is for closing so forum admin please do so.

I have same problem, but I found a way to go to the bootloader by pressing volume down + power then leave the power button but don't take your finger off the volume down until it boot, but it could takes about 5-10 minute until the device boot, the bad news is the bootloader is not responding, and you can't use
volume buttons or power button to choose anything from the bootloader menu.
Is there any way to recover the phone without using RIFF??
Thanks

You have not bricked your phone....a brick is a brick. If the phone turns on and you can access the bootloader, then you might be able to solve your issue.
In your specific case, you have messed your bootloader up by flashing either ENG S-OFF or a froyo hboot to your GB shipped phone. That can be fixed..takes time but it is fixable...

Tried vol down and power? Will boot into bootloader.
Your phone isn't bricked. Its in debug mode. Pull battery and do volume down + power to see if you can get into the bootloader, if you can you aren't bricked, load up an RUU and you should be good.
Sent from God, who uses OMGB-5.
Not sure as i cant see the screen... I press it and it vibrates... did some more digging and found this-http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8960978&posted=1#post8960978

Yes if you have an SLCD this is your problem. When you downgrade to 2.1 you have no drivers for your screen. Pull the battery, hold down and then hit power. Set your phone down for 10 minutes or until hboot loads. Make sure that you have this PB31IMG.zip in the root of your sd and then upgrade it. It took a while for my hboot to load. So give it some time. If that doesn't work try booting with trackball and power.
How do I know what kind of screen I have?
and where do i get an ruu?
Good luck with this one guys... lol. I commend you!

This is the ruu EXE. I dont know quite whether it works for SLCD, but its a resource.
If you recover by loading the PB31IMG in hboot, you'll need to also format your SD card to FAT32 if it isn't already. Might be a slight point of contention if you don't have a USB card reader or another device which can interface the card with a PC.
Might be easiest to run the RUU on a Windows computer. Link above looks perfect, it's the latest.
Download to PC, hook up phone via USB cable and lanuch the RUU program then follow instructs. I despise HTC Sync but in this case, might be easiest to go ahead and load it to your PC before you run the RUU. It'll allow the RUU to function properly (all this all assumes Windows). I'd delete HTC Sync when done if it were me. It can be problematic in other regards.
I am 99% sure that the phone dosent boot past hboot... so the above method wont work correct?
The 2 ways to do it are:
1.) go into hboot and have the PB31IMG already on your SD card. Once in hboot, it should recognize the PB31IMG and you press volume up to load. However, as mentioned it'll likely fail if you have not formatted your card to FAT32 at some point.
2.) Forget about hboot. Pull your batt, replace it and start the phone even though you can't see what's up. You should feel it vibe and in reality it's working, you just can't see anything on the screen due to the lack of drivers as previously mentioned. So hook up phone to USB port on PC and with HTC Sync installed, launch the RUU you downloaded from 3 posts up. It runs on Windows and loads the software to the phone via the USB charging cable.
I have grown tired of these downgrade posts on multiple forums. Instead of writing a "how to" in 50 posts I have made one
You downgraded, welcome to the land of suck.
And OP you phone does boot and works quite well minus the screen. To prove the point boot it up and call it.
OP,
Go with Doug's link. Great description and is using the same files already posted here. Just much better instructs to follow.
Alright thanks trying that now

Do you have SLCD or Amoled screen? Also, if you used 3.22 you might have to get your own recovery. Download ROM manager from the market and install Clockwork Mod.

[Tutorial] Unbrick your softbricked HTC Wildfire S

Your phone is said to be bricked when you screw up with your radio partition of your phone. This contains the bootloader which loads the operating system. This is a hard brick and needs expensive hardware to fix. I can only help you with a soft brick.
benjamingwynn said:
Most people seen to not know the difference between a soft brick, a boot failure and a total brick.
Boot failure: commonly referred to as 'the HTC screen', 'the white screen' and of cause the 'help me my phone is stuck - problem'. This problem can be caused by many things, including the kernel, library's and ramdisk (think of a ramdisk like a map of your phones internal hardware). This can easily be resolved by flashing a new ROM.
Soft brick: Is where your phone gives out no screen output, but does give out some vibrations or you can access the bootloader utility/hboot, this can be fixed by flashing an RUU
Brick: your phone is as useless as a brick. It does not turn on nor make any vibrations, and you can not access the bootloader utility. There is no way to fix this.
Here's some ways to avoid soft bricking/bricking:
- Don't flash unofficial radio firmware
- Don't flash unofficial hboot software
- Don't throw your phone
- Don't flash anything suspicious in hboot
- Don't flash an RUU not designed for your phone
Here's some common misunderstandings:
- Roms, on there own will never brick your phone
- Kernels will never brick your phone
- The bootloader is not the radio
- Too many flashes will not brick your phone (however, you may make the internal memory smaller by KB because of bad sectors, but that story is for another time )

It is a good practice to keep at least 3 nandroid backups on your sd card or computer. Also, making a goldcard is also necessary to run an RUU and to flash a PG76IMG.zip these things make it easier to unbrick your phone
Install ADB and Fastboot here first.
A Soft brick may be of many types.
The 3/5/7 vibe Brick (common with A510c)
This is Qualcomm Diagnostics mode.
--> How To Fix It (Click here)
You have to use a PG76IMG.zip extracted from your RUU, and not the file given in that post.
kalaker said:
To extract from the RUU,
Launch RUU (For this to be easiest, close all other running applications)
At the screen for the README, launch Windows Explorer
In the navigation/address bar type "%TEMP%" without the quotes.
Choose the first long-named folder (actually, the most recent) and open it.
Follow folders until you get to where there is a whole, big list (it should only be 1 or 2 subfolders).
Look for ROM.zip
Drag to desktop
Rename to PG76IMG.zip
Put it on SD Card.

Phone doesn't boot but goes to recovery saying something like E:/ Invalid command argument
Your boot partition is messed up
-->How to fix it
-Flash your ROM again
or
-Flash another ROM
or
-Restore a nandroid backup.
If that didn't work,
-Extract the boot.img from your ROM zip and and copy it where ADB and Fastboot are.
-boot into your bootloader [wait 15 sec] select 'fastboot' and press power.
-type
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
Reboot
Stuck on splash screen (White backgound with green 'htc')
Wait for at least 20 minutes to be sure its really stuck.
--> How to fix it
-remove the battery, boot into recovery, Wipe Data/Factory reset and try again
-still doesn't boot?
Restore a nandroid backup/Flash another Rom
Bootloop (Bootanimation plays repeatedly)
Connect the phone to your computer, run a logcat using the
Code:
adb logcat
command and look for repeating blocks

HI I have a 3 vibe brick on my CDMA VM USA HTC Wildfire S. It started with phone restarting and so I tried to recover though CWMod recovery, as I had backed it up when I first rooted my phone. During recovery it failed. I rebooted my phone then was stuck on the splash screen, after that I tried a battery pull and wound up with the 3 vibe brick. I have tried this method 4 times now, nothing seems to change, 3 vibes on power + vol down, wait 5 min, press vol up, wait 5 min again press vol up, no vibe, no nothing. screen stays black, no other vibes, do a battery pull, start over, same thing again. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated cause I have no backup phone at the moment.
I'm sorry that's my mistake you have to do that with a PG76IMG.zip, not pb31img. Extract it from the ruu of your carrier and then follow the procedure

Also if in diagnostics mode would this show in device manager... as I am guessing if it does not that means I aint so phone is truly bricked...

hard brick?
Hey all.
I recently purchased a Wildfire S(no simlock, no branding) from ebay. The touchscreen was responding very randomly so (without giving it too much thought, sigh) I decided to flash it. I'm in Germany so I used "RUU_Marvel_S_HTC_Europe_2.13.401.3_Radio_47.23c.35.3037_7.54.39.28M_release_236989_signed.exe"
I don't know what I did wrong but now I seem to have a bricked phone. When powered on it displays nothing, it doesn't vibrate and it is not recognizes by Windows when connected via USB, it doesn't even show up in the Device Manager as some sort of device. The display keeps turning on and off every 2,3 seconds regardless if I turn the phone on or i just plug in the battery so now it sits with no battery waiting to be salvaged.
Can you confirm that I have a hard bricked phone? I've read that it is possible to unbrick the HTC Sensation by putting it in QDL mode.
Can this be done with the Wildfire S? I saw two little holes near the upper right corner of the battery.
If it is absolutely impossible for the Wildfire S, can you recommend a place in Munich where I could get my phone fixed? What's a reasonable price so I don't get ripped off?
Thank you all! I hope I've posted in the right forum. Should I open a new thread for this?
Ciao.

I can't boot into the bootloader. As I said, nothing is displayed when I turn the phone on nor does it vibrate, it just turns the backlight on and off every two seconds.

My friend, you have a marvel, not marvelc. ( if it was a marvelc, then the 1st line would be MARVELC EVT1 S-OFF RL & O2 doesn't sell the marvelc). When did you check this?Which PG76IMG is that? It should have a higher s/w number than yours ( you can do it if it is lower also, but that is a much longer procedure). You can make a goldcard by putting your sd card in another htc phone also.

dl3.htc.com/application/sync/htc_sync_3.01.573.2_us_cellular.exe
plz...
and one more thing. its orage lite on front screen starts flashing when i plug in the charger/data cable. i check the battery voltage, they're 4.02v, so i guess the battery is full charged. if i remove the battery and the reinstall it.. the orange lite doesn't blink unless i put the charger again.
i've gone through other threads that seems to have same problem but i could not understand much of the terms used in those.. so plz i need a detailed help
Can you feel 3/5/7 vibrates when holding power button?
What did you try to do actually?
It's a phone sync software and not a ROM update which you have mentioned.
It seems that there might be problem with your battery. Check it first.

Did you root phone earlier? or
Is your phone's Bootloader unlocked?
If your bootloader is unlocked and your device rooted, install CWM Recovery via ADB, then download your ROM as a ZIP and install using CWM.
If you're not unlocked/rooted, do that first, again via ADB.

i guess the phone it is now useless because another guys says that
"Its bricked if you cant boot to hboot with vol-d + pwr. Srry only way is to send to htc"
so i guess that's the end of it
today i pressed both vol + and down and pressed power button.. the phone gave 7 vibrations and its LED turned on.
what does that mean? is there way to fix it somehow?

Bricked HTC Desire

Hi guys,
My bro has been flashing roms quite oftenly, I dont know how he does it. I dont use a HTC Desire.
Today he came to me and told me to help him fix up because he couldnt boot to anything.
The phone stay on the White HTC Screen only.
After reading up XDA, I booted into fastboot (Back Button + Power) and tried to Flash HTC Bravo RUU for WEE_Asia.
I used to flash WinMo devices so I thought it should be any problem.
When flashing, everything was fine until towards the end an error saying the package is lost or incomplete. and the RUU updater just leaves me without any choice to revert or what. I didnt not get a screenshot as well.
Now the device is bricked. Power button, anything doesnt work at all, blank screen. yeah..
So any suggestions or tricks to unbrick it?
ADD: Is it this first case of a REAL BRICK HTC Desire? (because I see alot people posting about 'brick' devices but its just merely some software problem)
because as far as I know its quite impossible to brick a device, well and error during RUU update can brick the device, but the error appears in the end of the RUU so Im still kinda unsure what problem is it.
pull the battery out for a min then put back in and hold volume down + power. what happens? does it vibrate or anything?
Sent from my HTC Desire
nope. no vibration at all.
Could it be a battery problem?
because I always see him charging daily and his battery always goes down till 40% or so even in airplane mode!
would it have been the battery problem that caused the RUU error?

doubt it if it only happened after trying ruu. if u were s-off then u cant just run a ruu anyway. this is prob what caused it. do u have a warranty?
Sent from my HTC Desire
Yes the device was S-off when I ran RUU.
Unfortunately, warranty was over last month..
So is this the case of broken bootloader?

I saw some relevant questions in this thread and decided this is the right place for my question. Here are the symptoms of what looks like my bricked HTC Desire It happened to me after I ran (RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.2_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_151783) RUU on my S-OFF phone:
- Take the battery in/out, press power button, just a quick vibrate and nothing happens
- Tried to boot in fastbood (Power button + Volume -) nothing happens
- Plug in the charger - LED is ON (orange)
- The msg on the PC app for RUU was that there was an err during the "upgrade", which was a downgrade attempt, caused by the fact that my phone software was not the right one for that RRU.. or smth like that. Suggesting I go and download the right version.
My question is... is my HTC Desire officially bricked or are we talking about some of those "soft bricks" you guys are referring to with hope for a restore.
Thx outfront, guys.

Thx for the reply! Doesn't budge.
I kept the battery out for a few mins and held down the buttons for a while as well. Screen doesn't turn on. I'm guessing the vibration and LED are good signs?
I've been at it for a while. As far as I got looking for answers throughout the forum... I used ADB app on windows to run command "adb devices" and got a
HT-some-code/serial....................recovery.
So I'm guessing the phone is stuck in recovery. Wonder if I can turn S-ON and try to re-run RUU from this adb thingy.
Ok, I unbricked it For all people that will land here, my (USB) brick occured after running the wrong RUU on a S-OFF Desire.
I started down the list of HTC Desire shipped RUUs from the list of shipped RUU (can't post link) and the phone got back to its out-of-the box state after I hit the right one. Worked for me.

I tried running the command "adb devices" when my bricked Desire is connected on my PC (pressed down the two buttons as well before connecting it) but it says "List of devices attached" without any serial you said that there was.
I don't know how does the "recovery" on bricked phone works. I did my test: remove and reinsert battery and connect phone. LED comes out. (means it isn't permanently bricked) press down "volume down" and "power" buttons and LED switched off. Tells me that recovery must have been booted.
Any suggestions? :crying:
EDIT:
Okay I followed the RUU method (post just above this). I remembered which RUU I am supposed to install (technically RUU_Bravo_Vodafone_TR_1.30.184.3_Radio_32.41.00.32U_4.08.00.09_release_139001_signed.exe). Unfortunately I received the ERROR [131]: CUSTOMER ID ERROR, which is sad. hurr
Before this bricking incident happened, I did an update to get android v. 2.3.4. Then I want to revert back its hboot from 1.02 to 0.9x using this method. Somehow, after the third step I still have S-OFF, HBOOT 6.93.1002, which is frustrating. That's where I went to alpharev and tried my luck. Nothing gets the advantage. I found another topic which then I found this rooting topic. That's where I began dumb and installing the RUU I want to install (which is the asia version, since my phone's RUU should be from Asia).
And that's how I got my phone bricked.
ugh

[Q] htc wildfire s boot loop problem

So i was trying to root my phone and now i won't start, can't even go to bootloader menu or so. when i'm pressing the power up button its just flashes and then shuts down. It loops so frequently that even my pc won't recognize it. What i did to the phone is this:
//androidforums.com/wildfire-s-all-things-root/502772-guide-how-update-htc-wildfire-s-marvel-a510e-gsm-software-version-2-3-5-a.html
i tried to flash a new 2.3.5 to it but now it wont do anything.
Is there any ways to fix this or should i just send this to graveyard :good:

I think you might have soft bricked your phone. Search the forum how to unbrick a soft-bricked phone. That might help
Are you positive that your WFS is GSM -marvel-a510e ?
Also ,Could you be a bit more specific about what happens when you try to go to boot-loader mode or when you try to boot it.
As in the provided link, did you have to perform procedure 3 or did you perform procedure 2 and was it working? A bit more info about what you did could help others analyze the issue

At the link i did the procedure 1 because my phone couldn't update to 2.3.5 so i tried to update it that way.
when i start the phone it just flashes it's screen and then goes off. it doesn't show htc logo or anything it just flashes some pixels. the loop is so frequent that it happens in 3 sec. Even if i try to start the phone by pressing "volume -" key and "power" key it does same thing, just loops every 3 sec.
I have tried to find a way to fix this but it seem that there is nothing to do because i can't boot to recovery. Is there a way to put the phone to recovery in other way or is here a way to make factory install?
It's really hard to do anything to this phone because my pc won't recognize it in any possible ways and it won't boot to recovery mode.
Do anyone know if i split the phone in to pieces and then manage to boot it or find the system memory and change files in there.

Even if you want to unbrick the device using back-toback tool , you need to enter the boot-loader mode.
Even for other ways, still it needs to be detected by the PC so that we can pass commands using ADB.
Sorry Dude, I can't help much either I am new to this myself. But i hope somebody here will definitely help you
2. There is a possibility that you could "brick" or bootloop your phone. There are two types of brick: soft (recoverable) and hard (non-recoverable). With a soft brick, the phone will not boot or keeps rebooting ("bootloop"), but it can be started in bootloader mode which allows repair of the ROM. With a hard brick, the phone won't even boot into bootloader after holding the power button for 10 seconds and the phone must be returned to HTC for service.

Have you unlocked your Boot-Loader from HTC Dev? Also, you need to install a recovery tool in order to boot into recovery. If you have done only the steps mentioned in the

then you haven't unlocked the boot loader and no recovery is also installed (I believe) . In this case, I think this is a hard-brick(Correct me if am wrong) which is impossible to recover . Anyways, we shall await other replies from DEVs here in the Forum.

I tried to unlock the bootloader but it wanted 2.3.5 so i tried to install the new version. now it can't do anything. Well this didn't broke my heart because the phone is pretty worthless . now i have to buy new phone sooner than i planned but still all help is still accepted.
Hi, exactly the same for me : I bought the phone 2 years ago and immediately unbranded it with a goldcard, but never tried to unlock it because it was my wife's and I didn't want to risk anything.
Now she got a new phone, I wanted to play a little with the Wildfire S ^^.
In order to unlock the phone on htcdev I had to update it from 2.13.401.2 to 2.13.401.3, with RUU because can't update with OTA (different CID), with goldcard inside.
After the RUU finished, it says "congratulations everything went well", but actually the phone does not boot, stocked in a loop "quick flash / turns off", can't access bootloader, no USB detection for ADB.
Can't send it to HTC because the 2 years warranty is expired, how ironic !
So... if anyone does know or see any trick that could help to boot anything on this "seems to be hard-bricked" kid... huge thanks to you
