Is it possible to switch LTE off and switch to only 3G data when the screen turns off and then back to LTE when the screen turns on? I'm seeking better battery life with this. Would it even make that much difference if I could do this?
I'm running AOKP milestone 4 with the tuna faux kernal 3.0.24.
I've tried the option in the rom settings for this but it doesn't seem to be working. The only way I know to check this is to turn the screen off for a while and then back on and immediately look at the signal icon. I would expect it to say 3G as soon as the screen turns on then switch to 4G. But every time i turn the screen on it says 4G as soon as it turns on. So i'm assuming it's not working. I've also tried using Tasker for this with no avail.
Any ideas? Anybody have this working using other methods?
Thanks
I wanted LTE on only when connected to charger. Plus it would be nice to toggle LTE directly from the power strip (gps, blutooth, wifi widget)
Liquidsmooth has power options to set data when the screen is off. I have not tried it however because I rarely use LTE unless I'm by a charger.

There are some apps and ROMs that will do this.
Might end up being more trouble than its worth, however, as the 3G/4G handoff isn't very fast, and it will often drain more battery toggling in on and off over and over again rather than just leaving it on.
I would love an app that knocked me down into 2g when my screen was off...

Or does that only help battery life with GSM phones?

I was wondering if anyone has experienced this. The 4g radio goes to sleep when it's not being used but using the browser or another app that uses a connection will wake the 4g. But I noticed a few apps don't seem to. Xda for example. It won't wake the 4g radio so it never connects. Also I noticed sometimes when streaming music with Google music the radio will go to sleep and then not wake up when GM requires a connection again. It doesn't happen every single time, but happens more than it doesn't. Anyone else experience this? I guess I could increase the 4g radio time idle time but don't really want it to eat even more battery than 4g does now

Yes. An how do you increase the 4G radio idle time?

yes i have this prob, i changed the idle time to like 30 seconds but still some apps wont start up the 4g.
to change the 4g idle time you can follow this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1292314&highlight=wimax
Thanks Rav! At least I know it's just not my device

No, when the 4g radio is active my 3g icon goes away. The signal meter stays though.

Not trying to wake the dead, but....
I have this issue on my epic touch. Some applications, like Miren browser, will wake the radio. Others like INOmail won't.
I have tweaked settings on the radio before, but I don't think that this has anything to do with the issue.
is it working for you guys? for some reason mine is not shutting off data when screen is off
Not working for me either...

I am wondering if it is something with this phone. I am not using JD but rather Green Power (same as JD) and it seems to have an issue shutting off data as well. I ended up using Llama and setting a condition that whenever the screen goes off to kill data and vice versa. It has been working great.
Tried it for a day and noticed that my phone couldn't connect to data even when wifi was off other users also had the same issue so I've steered clear of it since besides while using it really didn't see much of a difference in battery life

It seems to still be working for me? It has always been working for me.. I have juicedefender ultimate don't know if that matters?
Its working for me! It always has..

i have gotten both results. some days it does work, some days it doesn't. when it chooses to work and when it doesn't occur at random times, and i'm not sure what i do that makes sure that it works as it should.
i wonder if this issue and other reports of settings being reset after a reboot are phone related or firmware related...
It worked today after I went to the status page and tweaked some things.

what did you do?
In the "about" tab there are different options, this is what I have; enable after unlock is highlighted, disable on wifi (data) (4G) are highlighted, all the rest are not highlighted. Of course I have the app itself enabled with aggressive highlighted. Notifications needs to be allowed... been working ok for 2 days now.

Has been working for me as well. Using ultimate, advanced settings, basically have it set to turn off data while screen is off, sync every 5 minutes, using location for WiFi for home and work. averaging 1.85x. Data does not turn on when lock screen is checked, only when phone is unlocked. At that point, I see the juice defender icon has a red dot to indicate no data connection. It then turns blue and cell data turns on momentarily while wifi connects. The pull down menu indicates "screen" as the trigger got starting data.
Rooted just the other day, flashed the stock minus bloatware ROM (tesh's streamlined version 1) yesterday, juice defender still working fine.
Its working fine for me.

This thing works well for me but
i'm not sure about the features that require root. Id be very curious to hear if anyone has got the 2g/3g/4g toggle to work as well as any of the other features that require root on the stock ROM.

I just bought the Ultimate version. I intend to put some screenshots up after a few days to show if there are any differences between the battery life I have been experiencing with this phone and what I experience with Juice Defender installed and working on it.
Obviously, there will be some tweaking going on to get it set up properly but hopefully I will have everything figured out very shortly. I have high hopes for this application though I realize I am likely going to have to root the phone to gain access to the 2g/3g/4g toggle function. That is likely to save me the most battery power when I am out of the house and office while still allowing synchronization all of the time.
It worked good for me just had one complaint. It takes a few secs to connect from screen off. But it does save some battery.
I am looking to buy the Nitro HD for WiFi only use and maybe occasional prepaid use. I will flash to some deodexed ROM or maybe CM9 so I am not so concerned about software issues in the stock ROM.
What I am more concerned about is - how are the cameras for Skype/Google Video etc?
Any way to turn off all radios except WiFi by default everytime the phone starts up?
Thanks.
^^bump^^
I'll chime in here, I use mine as a wifi only device. As far as Skype/google video goes, video calls are great. I don't have a Sim card in mine and the mobile settings are greyed out which I'm assuming the cellular is off.
I'm currently running the latest cm9 nightlies and the device keeps getting better and better.
Battery life is definitely better than gingerbread. Battery life is within reason for a device this powerful while on wifi. The only battery drain I've found is being out of range of a wifi area. It seems the device goes on over drive looking for wifi and within an hour, majority of your battery is dead. This might be a CM9 issue, I'm not sure on that. Just remember to turn off your wifi when out and about.
Thanks for the response. I got myself a used one for $200 today off Craigslist. Will put leaked ICS ROM on it
Looks much sweeter than my iPhone 4S!!
UP!UP!
The super screen is eye candy. Using wifi it will last for 5-7 hours, while using 3g only for 2-3 hours.
For these two reasons, i often use it only as WIFI.
Will somebody introduce a super airplane mode without shutdown of WIFI?

Get dx battery saver, put it into sleep mode, then activate wifi.

You don't need any special app. Just enable airplane mode, then enable wifi.

oh,no, it is a two-click thing with a wifi interruption.
We want a one-click button.

I got it!
If there is /system/etc/settings.xml, modify it about what is airplane mode (this is, remove “wifi” in the lines of "airplane-mode" ).

Don't forget reboots
Anyways, sold off my Nitro and moved on. Thanks for all the responses.
OPTIONS: (these responses were too many characters to fit in the poll)
YES - it may have to search for an LTE signal each time it's toggled, but overall it saves energy
NO - the extra energy it uses searching for an LTE signal so often is greater than keeping LTE on all the time
I thought about using Tasker to toggle LTE off when the screen is off and toggle it back on when the screen is on.
Is this a good idea?
Has anyone tried it?
Are you getting better screen on time?
If so, what's the Tasker script?
Can you upload it, so we can import it?
My main reservation about doing this is that maybe it will actually use more energy because it has to search for the LTE signal every time it's turned on?
BTW, I don't think Tasker has access to LTE: https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!topic/tasker/XeSv3vlKq0U
If you're not already running BAMF Paradigm, go here and download this widget:
http://www.teambamf.net/topic/2529-ltetasker-bamf-lte-widget-v04-01122012/
(if you're already running BAMF Paradigm, no need to install separately, as it's already included in the ROM).
The first post of that thread also includes instructions on how to set up a tasker task to turn on or off LTE. I can confirm that it works with tasker.
But I can't answer whether or not turning off LTE when the screen is off saves a significant amount of battery.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Depends on how frequently you do that in my opinion. It's just like shutting down your phone from time to time. Of you do that before you sleep for example, you can gain much more battery life. But if you do it whenever you don't sue your phone, it becomes more wasteful.

Can someone answer what may be wrong. I have set tasker to turn WiFi on w screen on and off w screen off. It works in the the way that when I turn on the screen and unlock WiFi gets enabled. It also shuts off when I shut the screen off. The problem I'm having is it will disconnect while browsing the internet or any app or such that needs a connection.
I have it set as display state on and WiFi on... then display off and WiFi off. Is this not the right inputs?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
OK so I thought I had it figured out. I set display state on = WiFi on and display state off= WiFi off. It was working just how I wanted. Then I started noticing when I turned the screen on WiFi was running and BBS confirmed out of the 5 hrs on batt WiFi was running for 4 hrs. Deleted the schedules and redid them and still not working. It was but now its not. What am I doing wrong?
