Anyone noticed 4g doesn't always wake when using internet apps? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I was wondering if anyone has experienced this. The 4g radio goes to sleep when it's not being used but using the browser or another app that uses a connection will wake the 4g. But I noticed a few apps don't seem to. Xda for example. It won't wake the 4g radio so it never connects. Also I noticed sometimes when streaming music with Google music the radio will go to sleep and then not wake up when GM requires a connection again. It doesn't happen every single time, but happens more than it doesn't. Anyone else experience this? I guess I could increase the 4g radio time idle time but don't really want it to eat even more battery than 4g does now

yes i have this prob, i changed the idle time to like 30 seconds but still some apps wont start up the 4g.
to change the 4g idle time you can follow this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1292314&highlight=wimax

Thanks Rav! At least I know it's just not my device

Does your 3g and 4g icons display at the same time?

No, when the 4g radio is active my 3g icon goes away. The signal meter stays though.

Not trying to wake the dead, but....
I have this issue on my epic touch. Some applications, like Miren browser, will wake the radio. Others like INOmail won't.
I have tweaked settings on the radio before, but I don't think that this has anything to do with the issue.

Why don't you want to keep it at never?
I had that same prob on my hero. Might be an android thing?
At any rate, you want it on never.

Id like it to switch off if I happen to be not using my phone for a bit. After a few hours of leaving it sitting, and its still connected to that wifi connection, it kinda hurts the battery.

Actually your 3g radio uses more battery than wifi unless your wifi signal is weak and your 3g signal is strong.

Syncloopwakelock? What is it?

I noticed on the better battery stats app that the top of my wakelock list is something called Syncloopwakelock. It's been active for 41 minutes and has a count of 2317!!! It also accounts for 87% of my device wake time.
What the heck is it?

Hi, I am getting the same thing on my sensation running ARHD 6.0.3. My battery isnt dropping below 20mA when its sleeping. Did you manage to find out what this was?
cheers

Nope. I was never able to find out more about it and it continues to be in my top three wake locks regardless of what I do.

I'm wondering the same thing, On my GNex SyncLoop has a count of 1835, but only says 1s for total time. It is the highest count of wakelock items and currently my phone is at 75% awake, and it's been sitting on my desk screen off almost all day.
This is killing my battery and just started recently.
Seeing a far amount of wakelocks here from this. SGS 2 pre release build 4.0.3
Only seeing this since I upgraded to 4.0.2... so much for better battery life over 4.0.1!
Hi, are you guys running custom roms? I updated my version of ahrd to 6.1.2 and now that wake lock appears waaay down in my list.
I also realised that my main battery drain was the radio trying to hold onto the 3g connection in bad signal areas, ie at home. If I manually switched to GSM I saw an amazing improvement, so now I use a great app called toggle 2g to switch to2g when using WiFi or sleeping Search for it in the forums. Works with locale too although I find that to be an over zealous wake lock itself
[Solved]

[Q] Switch LTE off when Screen turns off

Is it possible to switch LTE off and switch to only 3G data when the screen turns off and then back to LTE when the screen turns on? I'm seeking better battery life with this. Would it even make that much difference if I could do this?
I'm running AOKP milestone 4 with the tuna faux kernal 3.0.24.
I've tried the option in the rom settings for this but it doesn't seem to be working. The only way I know to check this is to turn the screen off for a while and then back on and immediately look at the signal icon. I would expect it to say 3G as soon as the screen turns on then switch to 4G. But every time i turn the screen on it says 4G as soon as it turns on. So i'm assuming it's not working. I've also tried using Tasker for this with no avail.
Any ideas? Anybody have this working using other methods?
Thanks
I wanted LTE on only when connected to charger. Plus it would be nice to toggle LTE directly from the power strip (gps, blutooth, wifi widget)
Liquidsmooth has power options to set data when the screen is off. I have not tried it however because I rarely use LTE unless I'm by a charger.

There are some apps and ROMs that will do this.
Might end up being more trouble than its worth, however, as the 3G/4G handoff isn't very fast, and it will often drain more battery toggling in on and off over and over again rather than just leaving it on.
I would love an app that knocked me down into 2g when my screen was off...

Or does that only help battery life with GSM phones?

Wake lock - phone/rild

So I've been working to get as much battery as possible out of my device. Just today, I left my phone with wifi turned off on my desk and sync on, and it idled down only 1% over the course of 2.5 hours. Great, that's almost better than in gingerbread. The minute I turn wifi on and let it idle, my new wake locks are coming from "phone" and process "rild" in GSam. Any thoughts what these ones are?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
I've tried searching but it's tough to search wake lock and "phone" since it's such a vague term, but seems to be a specific piece of Android that GSam is reporting on.
Rild seems to be a radio interface layer or something related to 3g/4g,but why would that even be attempting to wake the phone when wifi is on? Isn't that portion of data turned off when on wifi?

battery only last about 3 hours screen time according to the usage, Can you increase?

What's the highest you can get with the battery on screen time?
As mentioned before 4g uses a lot of data, if you are rooted there is an app called auto brightness I keep mine at 25% during the day and 0% at night.
Secondly for the 4g issue you can find juice defender pro free in Google, if you install that and run custom you can set some apps to only run when you open them for instance the xda app turns on my 4g only when I open it otherwise my 4g stays off. You can set an app to enabled/screen off or I think enabled/background so streaming apps like Pandora always keep 4g on unless you close the app. Otherwise your mobile data stays off but you can also set it to turn on data ever 5 min 10 15 up to two hours so email updates and apps like I have mine easy route turn airplane more on when you wont need the data you'll save a ton of battery life.
The screen on part if you just rooted and deodexed sometimes your phone is adjusting and uses a ton of battery if you have cwm restart your phone tap the Sony icon until cwm opens then clear cache hit yes then go to advance clear dalvik cache then clear battery stats and fix permissions

How does juice defender let you specify whether to use 3G or lte? Because the boot loaders are locked on the lt28at you cannot specify which band to use. It will always use or try to find LTE. That's why battery drain is always slightly higher.
Do you have lte in your area? If not it's jumping to 4g which isn't lte what juice defender does like I said is shut mobile data off so it saves you battery by eliminating any switching
Sent from my LT28at using xda premium
There is lte in my area, so it always connect to LTE, then it will always show no signal in the battery usage, the color will be come "Orange", The signal strength is always 0, but i have no problem using data, voice.
When i go to area with lte, it will connect to 3G or 4G, then the battery usage information become Green...
I never used a stock rom long enough to test but what I did before I started using MIUI is get an apn toggle app from the market which will allow you to disable or enable apn's on the fly thus shutting off data and sticking your phone in 2g mode. There are probably also data widgets which can shut off data since more and more apps are starting to use the internet while you are not even using the program.
I have the LT28i version which can not be unlocked yet.
You are lucky.
