Is there a simple download or app to get my trackpad to light up when I get a text/email/voicemail like it does on the Nexus One ?
I dont know how to do these hacks and mods that you geniuses do.

Thanks guys !
Yeah I use Led Me Know too. You can choose if you want the trackpad to blink, or the LED at the top of the phone.

I got my Z a couple of weeks ago and my phone seems to do this straight out of the box??
eg - I get a txt and the trackpad light blinks. If I have a missed call the the LED at the top of the phone flashes.
Although, I was going to ask the question to see if I can get the LED to blink when I receive a txt because sometimes you cant always see the track pad flashing depending how the light is hitting the phone (if its laying flat for example).
I will also try the suggested app
Yea.. my G2's trackpad ring just slowly pulses if there's a new notification.
I believe the app causes the led to blink more frequently.

I tried led me know but it didn't do anything, on my rooted phone , any suggestions?
When I test the app, it makes the green led blink, but when the actual whatsapp message or an sms arrives, no blinky light

Yeah I actually though the stock trackpad notification on my phone (DZ) didn't work. But I found it was actually blinking every 10 secs or slow - which is too slow for me to have a quick glance at the phone to see if I've got messages.
Also, I have my phone in a vertical pouch, with the power button at the opening. So with Led Me Know and the LED notification set, I only have to pull the very top bit of the phone out of the pouch to check the LED.

Indeed, make sure it's on. Also, there's a "test" option within the app to let you see what it's going to do when it gets a notification.
If it's still not working, try removing the app and reinstalling it again.
Hey xda
I've had my Desire Z for about two months now and damn its the best phone i've ever had ! However i noticed something the other night which i would like to ask you about.
I have no green led that blinks every 3 seconds or so at the top where the speaker is. Shouldn't there be that when the phone is having reception ? I noticed this when i was charging my phone.. The older HTC's i've had usually glows orange when charging, but changing to green when its done charging.. But mine just turns off the orange led so theres no led litten up at all
Is this normal for the Desire Z or what does your DZ do ?
I have a G2, the charging LED goes from orange to green when it is above 80% (I think), but it isn't used at all outside of charging.
the green LED blinks when you have messages waiting or emails etc. as well as full charge indicator.
It really depends on how you've set your notifications up.

Is there somewhere i can change if the Green LED should be on or not ? Or maybe test it .. Because i never see this Green LED on.. When charging is done the orange led just turns off and no led is litten.. The same goes for when theres reception and i have a message.. The Green LED is not blinking at all
definitely sounds faulty to me. The only app I have ever heard rave reviews about is LEDme. Give that a try to configure the notification blinking. If that doesn't work, dig out your receipt for a return.
EDIT...... As Steviewevie has stated... App is called LED Me Know. My mistake.
The LED doesn't blink for notification unless you use an app (e.g. Led Me Know) or an app that does that for you.
In the stock DZ ROM, the trackpad itself blinks when you get a message, if that setting is switched on, though the blinking is very slow - e.g. every 10 seconds or so.
The LED in the speaker grille should turn green when the battery is fully charged. But when the phone is new there is a "learning" process for the ROM/battery, so that might be why you are not seeing it yet.
If you install the "Led Me Know" app (from the Market), there is a function in there to test out the notifications, so you could set it to use green and then test it from within the app, just to make sure your LED shows green ok.
The free app "Missed Call for Android 2.X" (there is another version that is just for Android 1.6) works well to change the LED notifications as well as vibrate patterns. I just tried it, and it works for flashing the green LED for a SMS notification.
Or if you only want to test it, download "covedesign dev"

Thanks for all the help guys .. I tried various of your mentioned apps and none of them seems to be able to make my green led glow.. Just wondering if i want a spare or not, since it just a rather small fault.. Do you think they will replace it ? is it enough faulty for them to fix it ?
If its supposed to have a green LED, and the green LED is broken, then I think its justification for a replacement.
Whether it bugs you enough to replace it, that's your decision. The only time I've seen it light up (without changing the settings with the Missed Call app) is when charging is done. So it really doesn't have much use, anyway.

Id like my trackpad to be constantly lit if I have a notification, instead of the fade in and fade out.
Would I have to edit lights.vision?

I like this idea. Going from my Nexus One to the G2, that's one thing I miss the most...even though the N1 flashed its trackball, it was much easier to see when I had a notification from across the room. With the G2, the trackpad light is so dim as it is, and when it flashes once ever couple seconds, its barely noticeable. If I had an option to keep it on, I'm sure it would help to get my attention.
Download LED me from the market and then when your in the setting for the duration go to custom and then hit OK which should make it stay lit when you have a notification. I don't have it installed so those instructions might not be exactly "followable"

Couldn't find LED me, but there is an app LED Me Know Beta, same thing?
UPDATE: Tried the app...this actually manipulates the tiny LED light under the speaker grill of the G2. The OP and I were talking about the light surrounding the trackpad of the G2. Thanks though.
Check compatability in settings, then under the notifications tab choose whatever notification you are setting up, then choose led color, then choose trackpad.

I tried LED Me Know, but it seems to drain battery a lot. Did anyone experience this?
LED Me Know does allow you to light up the trackpad. Go into the Notifications tab, then go into the specific app you want to notify you. Under LED color, choose TrackPad. You can make it blink or not, choose the rate it blinks, and choose whether to turn if off when the screen is on. The color is the only thing that you have no choice about because it's only a white light.
I love this app. Works very well on my G2. I haven't compared the battery life with/without it yet though. But turning the indicator's off when you turn the screen on would probably help. I really hope it isn't a huge battery drain. That would be a deal breaker.
Why the heck is Android so allergic to persistent popups anyway? Every old school phone in the world is in your face when you get a call/sms/email/voicemail/chat. But it's like pulling teeth to get the Android to yell at you when you have an alert.
I never noticed this until the lastest update, but the LED changes different colors for different notifications. Voice mail gets a green , Facebook gets a blue,etc..I remember my phone use to light up a rainbow color.. anyone noticed these changes?

May be someone that can clarify your answer... all I know is that I use Light Flow to change the color of the notifications.

Which update? Carrier or XDA?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
The blue notification comes from the 1.9 update of the Facebook app. I don't use Voicemail, so I can't comment on that. SMS notifications are white (whitish) by default, can't change that without 3rd party hacks.
I configured Whatsapp though, to give green notification light, but you could change that to anything else in the app settings.
If you want more options for other apps, use an app like lightflow, although personally I don't like it, never worked reliable for me.

I have Android 4.0.1, yakjuux, Galaxy Nexus from Fido.
So far, my LED light has never lit up when I get a Whatsapp message. There's an option for light color in the Whatsapp settings menu, but it doesn't seem to work. I don't feel I need to download third party apps (light flow) in order to make the built-in LED of the phone to work. Shouldn't the notification LED work out of the box, without any tinkering?
Anyone else have this issue?
Seems normal. Have u rooted? CM9 nighties now has great support for led color notifications
My led was never lighting up for some reason until I started using Light Flow. I can't understand why would they give us a nice multi-color led and not use it nicely. And my god have I missed the charging orange led and charged green from htc.
I'm also using Light Flow and it works great, otherwise not so much with stock but the LED has always been a tri colored led.

Normal for the LED not to work, even thought Whatsapp has an setting for it? That seems ridiculous.
My phone is not rooted, and I don't think I'd have to in order to make this LED to work. Why even put one on the phone if it doesn't work???

So far, I haven't noticed any different colours on my GN. It would be great if it comes through the official update. Else CM9 shouldn't be far away anyways
I just switched from a Nexus 4 to a HTC One M8 GPe. On the Nexus 4 I used Light flow very much with many colors and blink patterns to be able to identify what was happening without turning on the screen. Now when I have installed Light flow on my M8 it's only possible to choose from 4 colors or something and no blink patterns.
Is this possible to fix?
Great phone but this really bothers me...

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that it is due to the limitations of the LED on the M8 vs the N4. It's a different type of LED so there isn't an ability to tinker with it as much.
I miss that from my N4 too, but ultimately as soon as I saw/see a notification light I check the phone anyway.

I suspected this but before I got the M8 I didn't even realize that it would have anything else than the best LED. But yeah, 90% of the times It's just a message of some kind so I guess I'll survive. Still annoying though...

Not only is it not possible to fix because of the limitation of the LED that the other poster mentioned, but I'd be shocked if Light Flow gives you any color other than green and if it works consistently.
I had messed around with it some a couple of weeks ago, and gave up. I guess it's possible the Light Flow developer has tweaked it since then, but the version I was using was pretty useless on the M8. I don't fault the Light Flow developer though. I blame HTC on this one.

Yeah, it seems to work pretty bad. Are there any other ways to control the LED like Light flow? Does it work better if you just let all the apps control it themselves? I guess not?
I was able to get green and amber to work.
Green, deep orange, magenta and cyan works for me, but green and cyan shows as green/yellow on the LED and deep orange and magenta shows as orange.
Messed around with the LED settings in Textra after I disabled Light flow and suddenly it actually started to blink. Great improvement!
Is it possible to get it to blink in Light flow too?
Edit: Yes, enable color mixing.

Maybe I was unclear. To get it to flash in light flow you just need to enable mix and choose flash under the right color. This is not specific for Textra, but Textra can flash the Led by itself, without Light flow.
I've really tried getting it to work, but needed to put it in Direct Mode to get the LED with permanent light when lit, instead of flashing.
But in this mode the LED is dimmed even though the settings are set to 100% brightness in lightflow.
To get the LED 100% brightness I needed to remove Direct Mode and accept that permanent light instead didn't work, and live with flashing LED. Hence, not very different control than the standard setup i the Sense rom.
Any clues?

Try direct mode, root mode and HTC alternative mode. All three at once.
With that Setting the led is always permanent on dimmed like 20% through mixer and also standard control.

Then I dont know. Works perfect for me. Really bright too. Have you turned off LED notification in screen settings?
I've been fooling around with this a lot since hearing the news that it was working.
I think I've got it working pretty well to my satisfaction now. As I was messing with settings, some of which I may have inadvertently checked (like the Samsung always on setting) I saw a number of interesting behaviors.
One was that at one point my basic notification was, instead of just the green LED flashing, a combination of alternating green and amber colors. (I'm not sure what I did, so don't ask me to reproduce it.)
At some other point I had the LED staying on even with the screen on.
There were other issues, though, when those things were happening. So I kept monkeying with the settings, and I think while neither of those things are happening now, for the most part Lightflow is working acceptably well. I actually would like it if the LED --could-- be on while the screen is on.
Also unless I am mistaken, after an alert, if the screen is turned on but the alert is not cleared, when the screen is turned off, the LED will not come back on. Is this what you two are experiencing as well? I'm pretty sure with my last phone if the alert was not cleared, the LED would continue to flash.
Thanks.

When the LED is alternating between two colors (or more on other phones) it's probably two (or more) notifications and you've got the settings to loop through them all. Standard setting is to do this when you have the charger plugged in IIRC.
The LED is working with the screen on for me and I think it always has on the M8. On my Nexus 4 it turns off when I turn on the screen and the LED turns on again if I don't clear it and turn off the screen. Great if you don't want to read the message right now and still don't want to miss it later. Since the LED is always working wether or not the screen is on, this is not a problem on the M8.
But if it's possible to alternate with both colors on the same notification, that would be a great way to get a third "color". Could you check if it is like I said or if it really is dual color?
EDIT:
I got it to work! In mixer you can set one color to solid and one to flash to get both. So there are actually a difference on green + amber and amber + green. This will give us a total of 6 options: green, flashing green, orange, flashing orange, orange + flashing green, green + flashing orange.
EDIT2:
The non-flashing color isn't very strong, so I'm not sure how useful this really is.

It was definitely not really two notifications, though it is somehow possible that Lightflow was acting as if it were. The alternating was definitely like the alternating LED colors that I used to see on my last device when it was alternating between notifications.
I can't reproduce it because I don't know what crazy combination of settings I had at the time. The Samsung always on setting was probably involved. It's even possible I had incorrect checked the Samsung root mode. I was really trying lots of things, and not sure of what I was doing.
Right now, as you suggested, I have Direct Mode, Root Mode, and HTC Alternative driect mode all checked.
I have all LED notifications turned off in Settings/Display and Gestures/Notification Light.
I have Textra set to not notify me in any way, and am using LighFlow for notifications and repeat notifications.
I have not tested things much, so I really don't know how well it is working, but it basically seems to be, though I definitely do not have the LED staying lit with the phone on, or after I turn it on and then back off.
I wonder if some of the differences we are seeing could be due to versions of the phone, rooting procedures, etc. My phone is the Verizon version, and I used Weaksauce to gain root access. Could this make a difference?
Again, many thanks!
It is not possible to fix because of the limitation of the LED.
