hello, i have a kindle fire (rooted to ice cream sandwich) and i want to transfer books to my kindle (.mobi). I downloaded the program Calibre and it doesnt work.
For some reason the program doest have the "send to device" button like it should, and when i right click a .mobi file (that i already have) it doesnt let me send to my device. I dont know whats wrong.. maybe it cant detect my device..? Can you help me please!
If i "temporarily unroot"---put my books in---then reroot to ice cream sandwich.. will that work? Will i lose all my data?
^^ If that works.. how would I "safely" do that?
I'm rooted and I'm on stock ROM, but have my ebooks. You'll need to manually copy the .mobi file into the documents folder of your sd card, then you'll need to get the kindle app in order to read your books. Hope this helps.

Stupid me...
So since I am on icecream sandwich right now, are you saying i have to take that off in order for it to work?
Ive tried to copy and paste my .mobi files directly into the documents folder, but when i try to open them on my kindle using the amazon kindle app it says "unfortunately, amazon kindle has stopped"
what version of calibre do you have. I find sideloading books with calibre is a lot better than just adding the ebooks directly to the documents folder.
I have calibre version 0.8.46 (supposedly the latest one)
What ate side books if u don't mind me asking.. would they work in my case?
sorry for not clarifying, sideloading books is pretty much just putting books on your kindle using a program (such as calibre). yeah that is the latest version, your kindle shows up under "computer" tho right, like you can add files to it?
---------- Post added at 01:58 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:52 AM ----------
a couple tips on using calibre with the kindle fire
1) after adding books from calibre, they won't show up until the next time you reset your device.
2) http://howto.cnet.com/8301-11310_39...books-show-up-under-books-on-the-kindle-fire/
Yes, my kindle fire comes up in My Computer and I can manually drag and drop music files in. But when i drag in a .mobi file into the documents folder, the Amazon Kindle App does not work.
In Calibre, the program does not have the "send to device" button. So I have not yet even been able to send any file via Calibre.. ><"

if your on cm9 you have to put the mobi files in a folder on your sd called kindle... then it may take a min for the kindle app to load them but it will or you could reboot.. calabre wont work on a custom rom

Thank you for your clear answer! Have you tried this before? Are you "in my shoes" so to speak.. Im asking this because im wondering if its because I DID something wrong.
I am trying to do what you suggested now... I copied and pasted the .mobi file in the "kindle" folder in my SD card. Rebooted. And the Amazon Kindle app still says: "Unfortunately, Amazon Kindle has stopped working"
when I was using cm7 and cm9 roms, the kindle app would not work. I had to use a different reading app like akimbo or fbreader. look first to see which formats they support. Not very many apps support mobi, you might have to convert to epub
okay..i FINALLY GOT IT!! thank you all fgor helping me!
books
what did you do chrisleealee to get it to work
I've read about a way to get calibre to work with any ics rom, simply plug your kindle into the computer, open calibre, click on "connect/share", then select "Connect to folder" and naviagte to the kindle folder under the Kindle Directory in my computer.
Hey thanks for the renaming kindle folder method worked perfectly. I was curious about this but even though I have bunch of books I don't have time to read them. So I did not mind using another app until I stumbled on this. Thanks a bunch

Mind sharing what the fix was? I didn't see anyone actually explain whatever it was that did it. I am in the same situation right now. Converted the book with Calibre and I have put it in books, documents, ebooks, kindle....none of these get the book to show up in the kindle app on my ICS Kindle Fire. Can one of you fine people tell me what I am doing wrong? They are in mobi format which is supposed to be for Kindle. I can't figure it out.
EDIT: Ok I got it. Not sure why this was never said anywhere except one place I could find. You have to put the mobi files in Android\data\com.amazon.kindle\files
or you can just put them in the kindle folder on the sdcard
Reader for Rooted KF
Just to throw my 2¢ in here. I rooted my KF and I think I'm running a CM9 Rom. (where do you look to see which rom is running?) Anyway, at Amazon under Manage your Devices it says "registered Kindle", Nancy's Android. Then under that it says "registered Kindle Readers", Nancy's Cloud, Nancy's Mac, and Nancy's Android. The Device and the Reader have 2 different "send to" email addresses. The Kindle is [email protected] and the Reader is [email protected]. Amazon added the _79. When I launch the kindle/android using the kindle launcher there are no books. I even tried sideloading them using USB but they are nowhere to be seen. I found at Amazon they have Kindle Readers for other devices so I downloaded the Kindle Reader for Android. Actually, they tell you to get it at Google Play. That icon does not appear using the Kindle Launcher. However, using GoLauncher EX it does. So, I opened that and under "Archives" a list of all my books appears! WHEW! You tell the app to move them to "home" (the reader's home, not the Kindle home), then you can read. I'm reading now and have not been able to figure out how to get back to that main page but I'll worry about that later. If you guys at xda find an error in this account, by all means, straighten me out. You've been a tremendous help to me (I even donated:angel and I don't want to steer anyone wrong. I guess my point is, I didn't have to use another app such as Calibre or put things in specific folders. I hope this helps someone. I'm a firm believer in forums and this one is terrific.

Just a bit of advice to you. It's probably not a good idea to post your Amazon.com email address in a forum with millions of computer minded individuals. You should probably edit your post, immediately.

OK I was under the assumption that only email addresses that I approved could use the kindle.com address so I didn't worry about it. But, whatever you say. Thanks.
I think I did it right this time.

What I'm saying is, unless you have a secure password, it isn't very hard for someone with your email address to get access to your Amazon.com account with all of your credit card information. Just be careful with it in the future.

I love my kindle for Android! Being able to make notes and highlight is awesome. I read in the dark with the fonts white and the backgroud darkend...my wife is not disturbed in bed anymore with reading lights. Lately, the weather has chilled a bit here in SoFla so I like reading on the pool patio in the dark. Thanks to calibre, I can take all my .pdf books and convert them to .mobi...but...
My problem is:
I read from two devices (for example: Dell Sreak 5 and Toshiba Thrive and work with .mobi files on the laptop. So I've got two Androids and a pc that I switch back and forth. The laptop is NOT very important because I doen't read w/ it. Just proof files w/ it. As you are likely aware, I cannot sync my notes, etc accross the devices.
I see two problems. I want my Kindle for Android app to refer to a cloud (like dropbox) for books.
...and I want it to store the notes, highlights, etc there too. Or at least sync them to the cloud location.
I figured out how to get the app to sync with the cloud in a rudimentary way. I used foldersync from the market to sync the ../kindle on my local to the ../kindle in my dropbox. This does not have an effect on notes, etc. They do note sync.
From what I know, the Kindle app writes these notes and marks to a text file on the device. I believe that syncing this file to the cloud wont work because it will simple overwrite the older file. It cannot update the actual file contents so I think I require that the Kindle app write notes directly to the cloud. Now I understand this would require I have an internet connection at all times for this to work. I can live with that unless someone can come up with a better idea.
I do not want to break any forum rules so how do I go about getting this done? I am, of course refering to hiring a Kindle Geek to possibly modify the Kindle app for my purposes.
I am not sure if it does notes, but if you use Amazon Calibre plugin to add the amazon id (ASIN) to your .mobi files. I know that furthest page read and bookmarks sync across all of your devices/apps.
I know this isn't exactly what you are looking for but it may still be helpful.

Just update metadata after installing amazon plugin. I'm mobile right now+ will try to find a howto when I get home.
Essentially it finds amazon asin and sets book type to ebok

My apologies if I posted improperly. Since I directed my request to the developers, I figured it belonged here.
Lemmee 'splain were i'm at right now. I stumbled on repligo for .pdf's and wow! It does more than I wanted on the android platform. It integrates with dropbox so the master is easily kept on the dropbox folder and annotations are all kept within the .pdf itself.
My only complaint is there is no dictionary feature for words within the doc and saving is not automatic. You have to push the save periodically or when your done. I had to get used to dropbox cuz it was saving on the cache folder on my sd and changes did not migrate. You must make sure you are working from the cloud version and not your cached version, although I believe that is easily fixed if that did happen.
This option is ok for me, however, I am looking for a more simple scenario. I do not want to set my wife up with this because she doesnt get into the details that much. She just wants a kindle experience with annotations on both of her devices for ebooks that are not on amazon server.
For the moment though, this repligo app has rich features that make this experience wonderful. For me!
I've rooted my Kindle Fire. I installed the Android Marketplace. I thought it would be a good idea to update the actual Kindle app. Now I cannot get access to my books or documents despite them still existing on the device(checked using es file explorer). I found the directory for the new version of the kindle app by downloading a free book from the store and then finding its files. (/sdcard/Android/data/com.amazon.kindle/files).
I can live with this, but how would i go about restoring the Kindle Fire version of the Kindle app?
go to settings - applications - kindle - uninstall updates
I use Go Launcher EX and I updated my Kindle App. I had to move my .mobi files to /sdcard/kindle and I had to re-download anything I bought from Amazon.
The only thing that doesn't work for me is the Toy Story 3 picture book I bought for my son. It will only work with the stock Kindle App. It's not a big deal though.
I like it better this way than having to run the Amazon Launcher.
Thank you!

Thank you so much! This was exactly my problem.
Search terms in case someone else is looking for this answer "rooted kindle no documents books disappeared"
For others having this problem, just move all your files in either /mnt/sdcard/Documents or /mnt/sdcard/Books into /mnt/sdcard/kindle.
To start off with, I have a regular Kindle Fire, I posted here since it was the closest thing to a traditional kindle fire.
Okay, so my question is if there is a way that I can add my own e-books to my rooted kindle-fire running Jellybean 4.2.2. I tried getting the google play book store and couldn't seem to find a way to actually add my own books that I already have. Is there a specific app that I could use or a feature that I don't know about that can enable me to add my own books to my kindle? Thanks for any help!

There is a way to convert books to be accepted by the Kindle app, but only on the local device, and without sending them to your amazon Kindle email address, but I couldn't be bothered and like you, I installed Moon+.
If you Google search for it, I'm sure you'll find the info on how to do it, but you might have to use Calibre to get the books in the right format first.
I just side-loaded the newest Hulu Plus APK to my ATV. It was downloaded from Google Play.
It starts, but it can't be controlled with the fire tv remote control. Using a USB keyboard is okay, but it's annoying.
So, is there a difference between the Hulu Plus versions released on Google Play and via Amazon app store?
If yes, can someone please make an APK of the Amazon app store version and upload it here?
I am from Germany, as Hulu is not officially supported here I am not able to download it from Amazon by myself.
Thanks in advance!
No one here with a rooted AFTV who can drop me a backup APK of the Hulu Plus app? Would be really appreciated!

Just follow this guide to get access to all the Amazon apps... http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-install-geographically-restricted-apps-from-amazon/
I have found that best way to control all the sideloaded streaming apps which I've installed is a mouse & the FireTV Remote. I use the Mouse to point & click what I want to stream within the apps & the only way to go back within the streaming apps is the back button on the FireTV Remote. Although it can be a pain to input a long complicated passwords without a keyboard. It's not as important as a mouse for streaming apps.. And you can probably use the AFTV Remote app's phone keyboard to help with that.
The link to install FireTV's Hulu Plus is already in the FTV. Just need to mod your account temporarily to be able to install it.
Thanks, but the guide doesn't seem to work anymore. I think Amazon has changed something. I can change my account to Amazon US, I can see the App in the store (when I am connected via VPN) but when I select buy, it just says that I am geo-blocked
I hate those damn geo-restrictions. Google Play isn't that hard to overcome the restrictions, but with Amazon I found no way yet, grmbl.

Odd... Last week I was able to get some BBC UK apps just fine. I did not change to a UK IP either.. Just used the one I use here. Try changing the VPN's IP address or don't use the VPN at all.. Or try just using a trial of a DNS service. Will try to get you the Hulu APK... But I wold not give it in trying to get the guide to work. Change the US Name & Address again..
Thanks for the suggestions, but nothing works.
I now tried nearly every possible combination. With and without VPN (without, it won't show me the Hulu app). I even put some money on my Amazon account via gift-card. This way I could sort out that it's no problem with my german credit card, even if the the app is free.
But no luck at all.. So, I'd be really nice if someone could just send me the app so I can sideload it. Unfortunately, I don't know no other way

Why, oh, why is Amazon so restrictive?? Grmbl.. But it was worth a try.
For the time being I think I have stick to the Android app from the Play store and use an USB-Mouse. Not very convenient, but at least it works..

Try doing the change to US Amazon & then try installing the APK I uploaded see if that helps.. Also what Country/Language have you had it setup under.. Change it to US too just to try it out.. Also make sure you have enable the installation from Unknown Sources in Settings/System/Developers .
Changing back to US account and re-installing the app did not help, but I finally got it to work. Was a long way..
First, I connected to US VPN and created a new Amazon account at amazon.com. I then logged of my german account on my AFTV and logged in via the newly created account.
I bought the Hulu app then and installed it on the AFTV. I was then able to start it up and login. Afterwards, I logged the US amazon acc off and logged in once again with my "normal" german account.. And voila, it works.
Conclusion: It seems the app stores something in the data installed on the AFTV rather than on your amazon account. Interesting to know, maybe it helps others, too.
An easy way to get apps to loaded to your AFTV is to use an APK extractor. If an app is not available directly to your AFTV you can install it on your phone or tablet, extract the APK, and then transfer it to your AFTV. I use the one below as it allows it to be transferred to your cloud account, by email, WiFi, and many other ways. I usually opt for Google Drive then go to the AFTV, open Drive, and run the APK.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.asif.apkextractor
Disclaimer - Obviously not all apps will work/run properly on the AFTV but many will.
Not to make your way seem bad, cause it isn't, but there are so many backup tools to backup apk files that most people already know this. I backup my apk files with root browser, but there is no need to backup apps and transfer them. There are actually a couple easier ways to install apps without backing them up. My favorite way is by installing third party app stores. I have six differnt app stores installed on my fire tv and most every one of them have my updates the same day that gooogle play gets them. My next favorite way is by using the fire tv app that lets you pick what apps on your phone or tablet you wanna install on your fire tv and it sends the apk files from your phone to the fire tv without backing them up. Its called Fire Installer. Not sure if I'm allowed to name the app stores I have installed, but send me a message and I'll let you know.
Not sure what your point is. The app I mentioned is not backing anything up although it can be used for that purpose. It simply pulls the APK without you having to figure out what its unfriendly name is and where it is located and sends it by several different routes to where you want it. I looked at FireInstaller but is a single purpose app. The other day I wanted an app installed on my tablet but it was refused as incompatible. I then used APK Extractor to send it to Drive from my phone, opened drive on the tablet, and installed it. It runs fine on my tablet. The file I mentioned is simple and versatile.
Attached is a screenshot of some of the Send To options.
I use apk extractor that is how it's called looks very similar great way to transfer apps from play store
