So I know this happens A LOT with Droid (One of the reasons I steered far away from the Droid Ecosystem for a cell phone) that often times it's necessary to get a custom radio for your particular device area.
Recently (around december) with no new flashing of rom or anything my signal in my area will not get above one bar. I wasn't that concerned about it because I WAS supposed to be eligible for an upgrade and was just going to get a Nokia 900. WELL..... Apparently something changed and my upgrade eligibility was pushed back from April to October. No point in bothering to get a Nokia at that point because then the Nokia 900II with windows 8 will be rolling out (or on its way out.)
So I decided to start messing with my phone. I tried pretty much every rom possible on the HTC Surround. Now here is the weird thing. I get between 2-3 bars on stock 7004. However stock anything higher than that I am back to 1 bar or the blank bars symbol (or the dreaded NO symbol). Any custom rom gives me the same results 0-1 bars. I know this was not always the case because I was using DFT's rom V4 for the longest time and got 2-3 bars until around December.
So my question is does anyone know of
A: A 8107 or higher rom but using the stock 7004 radio?
B: Something that AT&T could have done to cause my reception woes?
Or should I just accept it and wait until Q1 2013 (when Nokia 2 WP8 comes out) and deal with the fact I am relegated to using Google Voice to make/receive calls or texts?

I have a Galaxy Nexus on Sprint. I got it a couple days before the 4.0.4 update, and for those couple days, it worked great. Calls were coming and going, no browser issues, even the GPS sync'd up in seconds (I heard about the issues so I put it through some testing).
Fast forward a couple days and I get 4.0.4. First thing I notice is my web browsing slowing to a crawl, then eventually, just stops. I would click anything or go anywhere, and the progress bar will barely move and just stay put. This did not happen connected to WiFi, only 3G. I reboot my phone, and all is well for another few hours. I don't always use my phone at all times, so I don't know what causes it. I've had to reboot my phone twice yesterday because of this issue.
The next issue was the GPS. I was going somewhere with my wife and figured GPS'ing an address wouldn't be a problem. Well, after about 3 minutes I figured it was like the browsing issue and rebooted the phone hoping it would work again. Nope. We loaded the address up in my wife's Samsung Replenish and were on our way. The whole time my phone was trying to get a GPS lock after a fresh reboot. I even threw my phone on the dashboard so it had a clear view of the sky. The GPS never did sync after the 15 minutes or so it took to get there.
Today, I just discovered ANOTHER issue! I was talking on the phone to my doctor's office, when I heard a few clicks, then it hung up. I thought it was my doctor's office that tried to transfer me and goofed up. I try to call back and after a few rings, I get call cannot be completed as dialed. Still, I thought it was their end. I call again and the recording comes up and plays for about 5 seconds, then cuts out again. So I finally call on a landline and all was well. After I was off the phone, another call came in to my phone and I answered it after the second ring, and it cut out immediately. My wife tried calling later after that, with the same results. After calling again, I was able to hear her after about 5 seconds (I waited longer than that last time).
I'm coming from an EVO 3D (EVO 4G before that) and it had it's quirks, but at least I could hold a conversation and use the web browser reliably. Being basically a vanilla Google Android handset, I had high hopes that all my worries and woes would go away. Now? After being pro-Android since my Samsung Moment, I'm starting to think if I should get a damn iPhone. As much as I dislike Apple and what it stands for, at least their phones "just work".
Anybody have anything I can or should try? Should I just toss this phone on the shelf until Google figures out what they're doing with this handset?
sounds like sprint in your area is having problems.
i doubt it would matter if you had a iphone or not.
My wife isn't having ANY problems with her old PoS Replenish. A lot of friends of mine have Sprint and nobody is having problems that I've heard. As soon as I reboot it when I have browser problems, it works great again, until later.
Flash a custom rom.
Or if you don't want to have a custom rom then flash the factory image.
Maybe something went a bit arse-ways with the ota.
that shouldn't be happening, its not normal, 4.0.4 made the gnex better than it already was!
I did a factory reset and the first call I made was dropped. Guess I'll put a custom rom on it... I shouldn't have to though
might something with the radio if everyone else around is not having problems with sprint. factory reset is not the same as reflashing the 4.0.4 images. try and reflash the stock 4.0.4 images.
I'm on my second device, sprint swapped mine out because my data was just crawling, and I came from T-Mobile and they don't have fast 3G and it felt like I just switched to Dial-Up. They updated the device in-store to 4.0.4 and it was fine yesterday and this morning Pandora kept stopping and buffering. When I got to work I rebooted and ran a speed test and I was getting 1400-1700kbps and sub 400ms ping, which IMHO good considering I don't get great reception in our datacenter. Now 4 hours later I'm down to 100-330kbps and ping of 1000ms plus... even after reboot...
Probably Sprint-version-specific problem or hardware problem of your phone.
I use a GSM Nexus on tmobile and I know people that have the Verizon version. Everyone noticed significant improvement after going to 4.0.4.
I purchased the Verizon GNex on launch after having many difficulties with the Droid x, Droid x2, and the Droid 3... I kept receiving phones from Verizon through their certified "like new" service that had many manufacturer defects.
I decided to end all this by buying the GNex and I have never been more pleased by a phones UI. But that's about where it ends for me. I cannot find myself happy with a phone that cannot be used as a phone. I'm constantly getting dropped calls, texts are failing to send, etc. The radio reception just plain sucks amenities has me very frustrated. In the same areas with my previous phone I have never had such problems with service. At times, on my GNex, I can have two bars and it still fails to send. Rebooting occasionally fixes the problem, but usually waiting about 30 or so minutes and the problem resolves itself.
I have always rooted and customized my previous phones because I prefer AOSP, and with the GNex, I didn't see it necessary to root. Especially because there are constant updates with ROMs, etc. and I don't have the free time to be flashing the latest updates, and I also don't feel like dealing with parts that may be broken due to said kernal or rom.
So, I've came down to a few options, and I'm taking recommendations from anyone...
1. Root my Gnex (suggestions that would fix my radio problems)
2. [email protected]* out Verizon
3. Wait for a new phone release
4. Razr Maxx (battery life would be nice since I cannot go even a full day on my Gnex)
5. ???
I'm just sick of dealing with worrying about whether or not my phone will actually be functional when I need to use it for importance.
Thanks, c21
unlock the bootloader and flash a 4.0.4 rom and the 4.0.4 radios. it should help alot.
My GN is one of my favorite devices. The way I have the latest STOCK ICS and can easily put my favorite butter smooth ROM on it are part of the reason. After using AOKP I enjoy the freedom to do what I want on my smartphone. I don't really want to go with another LOCKED down phone even if it has some hardware upgrades. I may stick with the Nexus devices. I'm tired of having to deal with Locked Bootloaders and S-On. If I get a skinned Android device it will have to be one that is not as locked down as Motorola and HTC.
If I had the problems you had I wouldn't like my device either. But I don't and never had those problems. Good luck with whatever you choose.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I am sure this has been talked about before when the Nexus launched.
I just got a new Nexus and I currently have Vicious JellyBean 4.1.1 on it and it absolutely runs great save for one thing. My signal is crap. At best I only show 2 bars (on 2 occasions 3). My 4G at best shows 2 bars. Now I also have a Charge and my boss a Razr, both show max signal and full 4G in the exact same areas.
This really annoys me as I knew of this issue when the phone first came out and there's still no official fix, all I keep hearing is that they're working on one and will have it out 'soon'. They've been saying that for over 6 months as still nothing.
So my question is this, is there any solution on XDA for this issue?
My phone is I515.10, I know I read somewhere here that there are two versions, the .10 and .09 and the .09 doesn't have this issue. Now Verizon will send me another Nexus, or Maxx, or Rezound. Yet I know there is no way for them to make sure if they send me another Nexus it will be a .09 one.
I really like this phone but I have to have reliable signal and hope someone can point me in the right direction to get it.
AFAIK VZW has not yet release the baseband/radios for JB, that is why the signal is not as good as it should be with a JB ROM. There are more in depth threads about this if you look around.
Thank you for the info. I went back to 4.0.4 and still have the same signal issue. So I guess until VZ actually steps up and releases a radio fix, those of us with the .10 and signal issues are hosed.
*sigh* Depressing. I really do love this phone.
I have seen around the forums a lot of talk about the radio for the galaxy nexus and the problems that they are causing. I recently bought a VERIZON galaxy nexus off of ebay, and upon activating it I probably lost signal 5 times over the course of the first hour I had it. I am not talking about low signal, I am talking about going from full bars to x (as if it is resetting the radio). It seems to happen almost every time i try to initiate a phone call or start to surf the internet. I have to try to call them, wait for my signal to disappear, and then wait for my signal to come back before I can make any kind of phone call. I saw posts about simply needing to flash new radio imgs to it so that is what I started doing. No combination of radios has fixed this thus far. Luckily it has a 14-day return policy.
My question is, has anyone out there with the verizon Baseband I515.10 been having similar problems, and found a proper combination or radio/kernel/rom that made all of this crazyness go away? Because I really love the phone to death (minus the battery life even with a 3800mah battery) but if i can't actually use my smart phone as a reliable phone then there is no point in keeping it.
Currently I am using FC05 and while it was better than the old 4.0.4 radio, it is still just not enough. Running Liquid ROM with Trinity Kernel.
Hi all.
I just picked up my (second) Galaxy Nexus today and have been having some severe 4G issues with the Verizon Wireless LTE version. When I brought the phone home, my first action was to put Jelly Bean on the device. I used Muzzy's 4.1.1 JB ROM and everything loaded in fine. When I booted into the ROM and began setting everything up, I noticed that my 4G connection was fading in and out and wouldn't hold for more than two minutes at a time. After wiping everything and re-flashing the ROM, it was still giving me trouble.
I just re-locked my bootloader and axed my root access and reloaded the stock 4.0.4 build that I left the store with, and I'm still having 4G issues. Mike's ROM doesn't change any radio settings, so I'm confused as to why this is happening. Did I get a lemon from the store and should I try to get a replacement?
I picked up a new (free) g-nex from best buy to replace a phone on a secondary line. I'd been selling the wife on the amazingness of the g-nex (i love mine), but of course, it doesnt work right for her, and it has the pulsing 4g/no-g signal problem (if yours is like ours, check battery stats and you can see the 4g/signal drop on/off...like candy stripes with all the red).
I've read extensively, and some insist this is a bad firmware flash that Vzw knows about and a fix is in the works, others say hardware and there is no fix other than a new device. I'm taking it in since I'm still in the 14 day window (rather than risk it) - suggest you do the same?
