Where the hell did my messages go? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so I had just received a text. Went to open from the notification bar and when I did it just took me to the message home screen saying "no conversations". I tried using Handcent to see if it was a glitch in default app but nothing there. Tried restarting and powering off phone. Nothing!
But what's weird is that there is no way in hell it could have actually deleted all those messages that fast (I had a 1500 message thread with one person alone). It's almost as if it just lost access to them.
Yes my phone is rooted and I believe I'm running one of the AOKP roms (been a while since I switched that's why I'm not completely positive)
Never had anything like this happen before, I know the messages have to be there somewhere, it's impossible for a phone this slow to just instantly delete over 2000-3000 messages.
Thanks for any help!

Dont quote me on it but i think text messages are stored in a database in the /data/data/com.android.messaging. I removed messaging from mine and use handcent so i cant really look. Just look for something in /data/data with messaging in the name.

I've had that happen on my original Droid a few times. I think it's caused by a low space thing, (which is extremely common on this device) and I've never found a way to get the texts back if they weren't backed up somewhere else. I agree with you that it's odd how quickly it can delete that many texts, though.

Thanks for the responses guys.
Cmlusco, Yea I checked /data/data and there was nothing there.
godsmacked, But shouldn't I have gotten a low space warning beforehand? My phone seemed fine at the time of doing this. But whatever, I had nothing important there that I needed.
But I still hate having lost all of them, maybe I'm just sentimental and liked having some of those convos. Especially since one was with a special girl (gay I know but whatever)

That happened to my friend who has an Inc as well. I don't see any way to get them back. SMS backup works I think or you can download go SMS to backup as well.

I can verify this happened to me several times using the stock OS. Never happened after I rooted/CM7'd it.

Tilt 2 Sense New Text Indicator Stuck at 1

It thinks I have a new text. I even deleted every text chain. Multiple resets. Ever happen to anyone else?
Stock Rom.
Yeah thats happend to me on my TouchFlo3D. Its a really weird bug. I think that it happens if u delete a message chain that still has a new message in it. Theres no way to fix it other than a hard reset cuz i went for about a month waiting for it to correct itself but it didnt so i had to hard reset. My best advice is to make sure u dont have any unread messages when u delete them
This happened to me recently i found an .exe app that corrects it for you. I don't have it here at work but i know its somewhere in this forum.
If you still can find it, message me and i'll email you the file when i get home.
No Hard Reset Needed....I understand your frustration LOL TRUST ME.
FOUND IT
here you go
It shows I have two new messages always for me too.
I just tired that file you posted because I have the same bug and when I run it, it says it found the the "new" SMS and fixes but it still shows up on the touchflo 3d.
When I run the app again, it shows no errors. However when I reboot the phone and run the app it shows the new SMS and fixes it, but it still showing up. fml.
I'm using the tilt 2 from at&t with wm 6.5.
EDIT: taking out the battery fixed it after using the app! Thanks!
ok so i downloaded the app but it wouldnt ipen on my computer. Now what do i do?

[Q] Help! All text messages gone!

So I went to bed last night, had my phone plugged in to my laptop charging and I got a text around midnight. it woke me up, I read it, put my phone back down and went to sleep. I just woke up and looked at my phone and the ONLY text message I have at all is now that text. All text before (thousands) are gone, deleted... I checked my crunchSMS and "messages" and there's just the one message in both. I'm using MYN's newest and everything else seems to be accounted for. Please let me know if there is any way to restore my texts (other than my backup, I got some important texts yesterday) Please let me know if you guys can think of anything.

You had just woken up and probably deleted them by accident. I'm sorry but I can't think of any way to recover them.
PS. My name is HondaCop and I approve this message.

I don't think that's what happened... could someone that easily delete every text they had?

Easily can happen when you are messing around with the phone right after waking up and not being completely awake.

I doubt you deleted them all by accident. I've had this happen to me twice now as well. Had you noticed the SMS program being sluggish lately? Both times it has happened to me I've had thousands upon thousands of SMS in the database and the app had slowed to a crawl. I think the app freaks out and corrupts the database or something which results in it just trashing the whole thing and recreating it from zero. Android already has an issue with the messaging app pulling up the wrong conversation/contact once in a while, for it to hose the whole database isn't much of a stretch from there lol.
The stock HTC messaging app doesn't even have a delete all option. You would have to go Menu -> Delete -> and then manually select each individual conversation in order to delete everything.

There's an SMS backup that syncs to GMail. The app is free in the market. I would use that next time.

This also happened to me like two days ago.
really quite lame...lost a lot of photos
The same thing has happened to me twice now. Thousands of messages gone. It happened today for no reason. I put my phone on silent while in an interview and when I got out I had one new text and all of the rest were gone. Total Bullsh!t!
I love deleting all of my texts, do it a few more times and you will feel free.

i use SMS Backup and Restore. I have it configured to do automatic backups of my messages once a week, so at the worst i will lose one week work of messages in the event something goes wrong.
SMS Backup+ I have it set to back em up every hour.

[Q] text message app, everything is blacked out

hey everyone,
so this is actually for my girlfriends g2 and i haven't seen it in person yet, i'll see it tonight, but i figured i'd throw some feelers out there...
her g2, whenever she goes into the text messaging app, the whole screen except the top 1/4 (so she can see the status bar, the create new message, and the most recent text conversation). she's NOT rooted, totally stock and never upgraded to gingerbread. so the notification that she should upgrade has been popping up so she finally went ahead and let it upgrade today while she was at work and it seemed to all go fine she says but now that its rebooted and upgraded, the text message app is still exactly the same issue.
like i said i haven't seen it myself. any ideas? first things first is i was probably going to go in and force close the app. if that doesn't help i'm going to start clearing out her texts (who knows when the last time she cleared them out was). after that... not sure. any other ideas?
thanks!
Dave
This seems to be a common problem. I googled it and found others with that same problem. Didn't see any fixes, though. Try a third party texting app. Otherwise you may need to replace the screen. Could try rooting and flashing a custom rom as well.

Unroot/Re-root woes

Alright, so I was trying to use a program that some other people have said work fine but it wouldn't work, so I figured I would unroot/reroot and see if it helped. I restored the phone to factory settings, used the instructions that are readily available here and other places to unroot my phone and rooted it using the manual method (just like I did the day I got my phone) and tried to set everything back up, but have run into a few problems.
1) Text messaging
-I have used Handcent for a long time on old phones, and used it just fine on this phone, but when I got my phone set back up, texts were coming in from the wrong people. I would get a text from PersonA, but it would show up as PersonB and when I responded it would go to PersonB. The only way that I could respond to PersonA was to back out, go into the people app, choose PersonA and text them. When I did this, it would take me into the exact same thread but have PersonA's name at the top now. When PersonA responded, it would show up as PersonB again and I would have to do it all over.
2) Google Wallet
-Was working fine, even used it at McDonald's, but now when I try to load it up for the first time, it sits at a black screen until eventually it says "Wallet is not responding. Would you like to close it? (Wait) (OK)"
Oh, and the program that I originally went through all of this for is still giving me the same error about not being able to locate a partition to remount to write to. What do I need to do to get this thing back to working correctly?

This is happening to me! I am rooted, completely stock otherwise and using Handcent. Is this a handcent issue? Anyone have more insight into this?
I'm in the process of unrooting my phone again to see if it happens when I'm not rooted.
Update:
Unrooted, same issue with Google Wallet and messaging
Rooted again, same issue
I was kindof hoping that someone would have come in here by now with some "here, try this" or "yeah, that happened to me and this is how I fixed it" type post. Am I the first person that has run across these issues after flashing to stock files from code.google.com?
I'm on 2nd nexus and haven't had that issue with handcent on either phones. Stock or rooted..

Are you uninstalling and reinstalling your apps? Have you tried deleting your apps' respective caches?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Well the 3 obvious problems could be:
1) I am either following the steps to unrooting incorrectly. (I don't think that it is rooting that is causing the problem since I a) didn't have the problem before I unrooted the first time and b) the problem is recreated whether I am rooted or not.)
2) My phone is faulty
3) The files that I am using (downloaded directly from http://code.google.com/android/nexus/images.html) are damaged.
The MD5 matches the .tgz file.
Everything looks like it is going through correctly when I am flashing the files.
I don't think that I am following the instructions in correctly, so that narrows it down (in my head anyway). Has anyone else used the factory images for code.google.com? Have you tried running Google Wallet afterwards?

I have tried going into settings, force closing the app and clearing cache and I have tried resetting the phone to factory defaults. Neither changed how the app behaved. I still just get a black screen with the not responding message.
I did some more research into the Handcent problem, apparently it is fairly widespread on ICS and goSMS has the same issue. Stock is apparently not affected, so I am using that but it sucks...
I have seen a few of the GoSMS and Handcent posts, but I'm not completely sure that I am experiencing the same issue. Every post I have seen speaks of erratic problems. Mine is with every text message. Also, it didn't start happening until I flashed the factory images from code.google.com. Also, the problem only popped up when I started experiencing other problems (like with Google Wallet). Although we are having a similar issue, I believe the root problem of the issue is different, which is why the issues are slightly different.
Went and exchanged my phone today, rooted as soon as I walked in the door, installed everything back to the way that I had it and everything is working fine again. On my way to McDonald's for lunch.

Too many SMS now messages won't work!

Hi all,
Having looked around I don't see anyone with the same issue as mine with regards to SMS.
I just got a new Nexus 2 days ago, and got the 4.0.4 update by doing the clear cache thing. All good.
I installed SMSBackup+ and started to restore all my text messages. Now I have about 21,000. Honestly I have no idea how I have that many, its possible some are dupes or something, I really don't know. But basically I left it to restore them overnight and woke up this morning with all my messages restored. Lovely.
But now, I tried to send a text to someone and it just froze. I quit to the home screen, went to go back to the message app but it just sits with a black screen doing nothing.
I presume its got something to do with it trying to load all the messages for the first time or something like that but I'm a bit gutted that it can't handle it. My old Galaxy S could handle them all with ease.
Is this a known issue on the GNex or am I asking too much with the volume of SMSs??
I'm a bit gutted if I've bought this brand new state of the art phone and it can't handle what my two year old SGS could!
It might have been the case that a couple of messages were corrupt. Try clearing the sms data and restoring again but only blocks at a time. If that doesn't work the messaging app might have an issue since your now running ics.
This could be an issue that hasn't been explored as your not the average user. I for 1 limit my messages at 200 a contact.

Thanks RT, but its so slow/congested it won't let me delete them either! I tried by going into the message app and choosing delete threads.
It loads every time I reboot the phone but if I do anything on it at all, it just shows me a black screen.
On first load I can see all the messages, but if I go into one of them, even one that is only 2 threads long, it just freezes on me.
Any idea how I can delete the SMS data without going through the message app?
Or am I staring down the barrel at a factory reset? (this isn't the end of the world as I only got the phone yesterday and haven't really installed anything yet)
Right then,
So instead of trying to do something with the stock message app to delete the sms messages, I downloaded delete old messages app and ran that before loading up the stock message software.
I think the next time I restore them I will try and put the 200 cap on them like my SGS did (I thought this was a limitation of the phone not an actual setting that I could adjust! I presume I'll find it in the stock SMS settings somewhere?)
Thanks for the help RT.
I've had that issue since froyo. anytime I restore thousands of texts, the messaging app just hangs. On the rare occasion it'll come to life but for the most part unusable. only solution seems to be to restore a small portion of your texts or have a blank slate

Quit being so popular. Too many SMS.
I made a second label in my GMail I call SMS Backup and every few weeks I'll change my backed-up messages from SMS to the Backup label so when/if I wipe and restore, it doesn't pull in all my messages. If I need anything, I can easily search for it.

To delete your messages / settings go into the sms app under Settings-Apps and clear all your data.
Yes you find the sms limit setting in the general setting within the sms app.
