[Q] Help! All text messages gone! - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I went to bed last night, had my phone plugged in to my laptop charging and I got a text around midnight. it woke me up, I read it, put my phone back down and went to sleep. I just woke up and looked at my phone and the ONLY text message I have at all is now that text. All text before (thousands) are gone, deleted... I checked my crunchSMS and "messages" and there's just the one message in both. I'm using MYN's newest and everything else seems to be accounted for. Please let me know if there is any way to restore my texts (other than my backup, I got some important texts yesterday) Please let me know if you guys can think of anything.

You had just woken up and probably deleted them by accident. I'm sorry but I can't think of any way to recover them.
PS. My name is HondaCop and I approve this message.

My late night texts usually get me out of bed. But as handacap said once thryre gone, thats it.

I don't think that's what happened... could someone that easily delete every text they had?

Easily can happen when you are messing around with the phone right after waking up and not being completely awake.

I doubt you deleted them all by accident. I've had this happen to me twice now as well. Had you noticed the SMS program being sluggish lately? Both times it has happened to me I've had thousands upon thousands of SMS in the database and the app had slowed to a crawl. I think the app freaks out and corrupts the database or something which results in it just trashing the whole thing and recreating it from zero. Android already has an issue with the messaging app pulling up the wrong conversation/contact once in a while, for it to hose the whole database isn't much of a stretch from there lol.
The stock HTC messaging app doesn't even have a delete all option. You would have to go Menu -> Delete -> and then manually select each individual conversation in order to delete everything.

There's an SMS backup that syncs to GMail. The app is free in the market. I would use that next time.

This also happened to me like two days ago.
really quite lame...lost a lot of photos

The same thing has happened to me twice now. Thousands of messages gone. It happened today for no reason. I put my phone on silent while in an interview and when I got out I had one new text and all of the rest were gone. Total Bullsh!t!

I love deleting all of my texts, do it a few more times and you will feel free.

i use SMS Backup and Restore. I have it configured to do automatic backups of my messages once a week, so at the worst i will lose one week work of messages in the event something goes wrong.

SMS Backup+ I have it set to back em up every hour.

Restoring thousands of messages

I have been using SMS Backup and Restore to restore my text messages. Recently, I lost my messages and didn't backup. Well, my gf's phone has the messages and I want to get them off. What I did was backup using the app, which makes an XML. Then I opened it and changed all of my number to hers, and changed all incoming messages to outgoing, and vice versa. When I try to restore all these messages, 16k, it freezes my messaging app afterwards. Is there any other app that would do this better/allow me to switch the numbers / incoming/outgoing aspects to make it look like i sent my messages and recieved hers? Or is there a way I could get the messaging app (handcent too) to stop FCing?
Well, you should have done a backup. Do not change the document. Also, by doing so.. it'll just confuse the program and lock it up. :-D It sounds to me like you're really spying on her.

LoL... I thought that's what it sounded like to me.
No its the conversation between me and her, it is our text messages lol. And I dont think it is confusing it, I just think since I am restoring 16k messages it locks up.
16 thousand! that's why it wont restore right there. My evo gets bogged down after 300 messages. You should never have that many texts, you are just asking for trouble.
Well her phone is a Huwaei Cricket Ascend and its fine with them haha. I think it is just because I am restoring them, and they arent just on there.
Again, a few hundred is a lot, a few thousand is ridiculous. It takes over 10 minutes to delete about 400 texts from my evo. Restoring 16 thousand will likely take hours upon hours to complete.
Takes like 30 mins to restore. Even using handcent to delete though, takes hours
I mean, do you really need 16 THOUSAND messages in your phone? You have the xml file, just open it up in Word and print it out.
Lmao good idea Sitlet..I never thought of that, however I just took screenshots of my favorite part of the texts and just keep them to myself. If I wanna feel good, I reread them

Yes he does, and everybody he knows should do this as well, in fact he should have even more. I am saying this because 3/4 of all the phones I see come in for service are for freezing/locking up. The reason, 90% of the time, is too many texts/emails/voicemails. People like this keep service centers open.

The higher end phones tend to handle it better but imagine a Moment or Hero with that many messages and 100+ voicemails. See it atleast 3-4 times a day.
Yea lol. Evo handled it okay. I get some lag with message apps. Like 3 - 4 seconds tops and only when opening. Wonder if I OC will it fix it.. hrmm

Too many SMS now messages won't work!

Hi all,
Having looked around I don't see anyone with the same issue as mine with regards to SMS.
I just got a new Nexus 2 days ago, and got the 4.0.4 update by doing the clear cache thing. All good.
I installed SMSBackup+ and started to restore all my text messages. Now I have about 21,000. Honestly I have no idea how I have that many, its possible some are dupes or something, I really don't know. But basically I left it to restore them overnight and woke up this morning with all my messages restored. Lovely.
But now, I tried to send a text to someone and it just froze. I quit to the home screen, went to go back to the message app but it just sits with a black screen doing nothing.
I presume its got something to do with it trying to load all the messages for the first time or something like that but I'm a bit gutted that it can't handle it. My old Galaxy S could handle them all with ease.
Is this a known issue on the GNex or am I asking too much with the volume of SMSs??
I'm a bit gutted if I've bought this brand new state of the art phone and it can't handle what my two year old SGS could!
It might have been the case that a couple of messages were corrupt. Try clearing the sms data and restoring again but only blocks at a time. If that doesn't work the messaging app might have an issue since your now running ics.
This could be an issue that hasn't been explored as your not the average user. I for 1 limit my messages at 200 a contact.

Thanks RT, but its so slow/congested it won't let me delete them either! I tried by going into the message app and choosing delete threads.
It loads every time I reboot the phone but if I do anything on it at all, it just shows me a black screen.
On first load I can see all the messages, but if I go into one of them, even one that is only 2 threads long, it just freezes on me.
Any idea how I can delete the SMS data without going through the message app?
Or am I staring down the barrel at a factory reset? (this isn't the end of the world as I only got the phone yesterday and haven't really installed anything yet)
Right then,
So instead of trying to do something with the stock message app to delete the sms messages, I downloaded delete old messages app and ran that before loading up the stock message software.
I think the next time I restore them I will try and put the 200 cap on them like my SGS did (I thought this was a limitation of the phone not an actual setting that I could adjust! I presume I'll find it in the stock SMS settings somewhere?)
Thanks for the help RT.
I've had that issue since froyo. anytime I restore thousands of texts, the messaging app just hangs. On the rare occasion it'll come to life but for the most part unusable. only solution seems to be to restore a small portion of your texts or have a blank slate

Quit being so popular. Too many SMS.
I made a second label in my GMail I call SMS Backup and every few weeks I'll change my backed-up messages from SMS to the Backup label so when/if I wipe and restore, it doesn't pull in all my messages. If I need anything, I can easily search for it.

To delete your messages / settings go into the sms app under Settings-Apps and clear all your data.
Yes you find the sms limit setting in the general setting within the sms app.

Where the hell did my messages go?

Ok so I had just received a text. Went to open from the notification bar and when I did it just took me to the message home screen saying "no conversations". I tried using Handcent to see if it was a glitch in default app but nothing there. Tried restarting and powering off phone. Nothing!
But what's weird is that there is no way in hell it could have actually deleted all those messages that fast (I had a 1500 message thread with one person alone). It's almost as if it just lost access to them.
Yes my phone is rooted and I believe I'm running one of the AOKP roms (been a while since I switched that's why I'm not completely positive)
Never had anything like this happen before, I know the messages have to be there somewhere, it's impossible for a phone this slow to just instantly delete over 2000-3000 messages.
Thanks for any help!

Dont quote me on it but i think text messages are stored in a database in the /data/data/com.android.messaging. I removed messaging from mine and use handcent so i cant really look. Just look for something in /data/data with messaging in the name.
I've had that happen on my original Droid a few times. I think it's caused by a low space thing, (which is extremely common on this device) and I've never found a way to get the texts back if they weren't backed up somewhere else. I agree with you that it's odd how quickly it can delete that many texts, though.

Thanks for the responses guys.
Cmlusco, Yea I checked /data/data and there was nothing there.
godsmacked, But shouldn't I have gotten a low space warning beforehand? My phone seemed fine at the time of doing this. But whatever, I had nothing important there that I needed.
But I still hate having lost all of them, maybe I'm just sentimental and liked having some of those convos. Especially since one was with a special girl (gay I know but whatever)
That happened to my friend who has an Inc as well. I don't see any way to get them back. SMS backup works I think or you can download go SMS to backup as well.

I can verify this happened to me several times using the stock OS. Never happened after I rooted/CM7'd it.

nope
i read somewhere a while back that handcent actually stores all your incoming and outgoing sms regardless of whether you delete them, in a database file. i tried searching for it but couldn't find anything on that.

That's a shame, I had the same thing happen to me a while ago. I was so distraught that start using SMS Backup to store all my text msgs. It's sorta cool is when I switch phones or anything, it would automatically download into my newest phone and you can search through your msgs on gmail.
I would try restarting the phone if you haven't already (stupid suggestion I know) and see maybe it was just a glitch. Hopefully someone on here will be able to help!

[Q] Delete old text messages

Is there a way to delete messages by date? I've tried backing up and restoring them using SMS backup and restore and set a date but they all came back. If I try to delete threads my phone locks up. I have about 20,000 texts
I wish there was a way to see them through windows explorer and delete them that way... I can't get anything to open. Ah!!!
If you use SMS backup and you use your gmail to sign in. You can go into gmail from your comp.(probably your phone) abs you can delete them by date that way.

That's a copy though. My phone has locked up and had to been forced off like 6 times now. There are too many to delete it just freezes. I set a limit in go SMS days ago and it never deletes any. This is ridiculous.
And now go SMS pro won't open either. And the phone can't force close it. The whole thing just locks up wtf.

Wait. How many SMS programs are you syncing to? You said SMS backup. Then go SMS. ? Do you have backups to both?

SMS backup & restore makes an XML file on my external SD. Go SMS pro shouldn't be backing anything up.
I use the stock app to send MMS because go uploads it to their servers and that creeps me out lol. But the stock app CANNOT handle that many texts being there.
Go is working a little better (I can send a text) now that I went in recovery and cleared cache, davik and fixed permissions.
I still think I need to try and get rid of old texts but every time I try programs just lock up.
Have you tried History eraser?
Or delete data for it. Just dump them all.

Well I have SMS backup +. It syncs all my SMS, call logs, etc with Google. I don't have any XML in my phone. Whenever I restore my phone I DL the app and sign in and hit restore and it pulls it from my Google account. That's what I was showing you earlier. But I'd have to test if it actually syncs when I erase from gmail to the app.

History eraser or historyeraser?? I'll try! But I don't know if it'll work. On SMS backup & restore I hit delete all messages and after an hour the little circle was still spinning.
Can someone please tell me where the texts are stored. Any app just freezes my phone and I have to reboot.
I'd love to watch you drag this along for two more days but I think I speak for everyone on this site. Just factory reset your phone and get over it.

That would have been extremely moronic to do. I just deleted the SMS database. I also got in touch with the backup & restore people about batch removing texts from the XML output.
What a stupid suggestion.
Hey man I've had this happen to me. It happened when I would flash a new rom, and didn't turn off the auto delete after 200 and then restored my 7k texts... Honestly once in a while I'd get lucky and be able to usually... I had to re flash the ROM. Haven't found a better solution yet
