Can anyone give some good direction on how to root my new Galaxy S2? And the benefits of doing so? I was apple user and know everything about jailbreaking but nothing of rooting ( advantages or disavantages ). And if I do root my phone is there away to turn back to the orginal phone settings? I really want to get rid of this stupid bloatware or whatever its called that runs on my phone in the background and that I currently cant remove?

It's woefully out of date. Is it still being used? Should it be updated? I'd be willing to update it and stuff on my own but I wanted to ask here since it doesn't cover anything post Froyo.
I think it would help the new ppl (the smart ones that know how to look **** up ;-) )

I relied on that wiki when I was starting out. I spent nearly a month reading before trying anything (or even posting any questions). It's near useless now and the only reason I can do anything without being lost is because I have been around here since late 2010.

It was also really helpful to me when I first started. Like everyone else I read everything and still semi bricked my phone the first time. Great part was I was able to read how to unbrick it from the same area.
I have been trying to keep up, still very new. I managed to get up to Clean GB BML, then on to MTD.
But I spent most of the day trying to figure out the easiest way to update the modem to EL30 and finally stumbled across the flash able zip file that allowed me to boot back to BML "I thank all that came up with that!"
Then I searched the rest so I could get Clean GB EL30 MTD 1.1.2! Needless to say I found everything I needed it just took me some time. I know you experienced users get frustrated at people for posting stuff that is out there, but sometimes to us newbies it is hard to find the things we need.
Anyways sorry for such a long post and I know at the speed the developers around here have been bringing out new things it would be hard to keep anything up to date, but if possible it would be awesome!
Just want to say I can't wait and hope all the kinks get worked out of ICS cause that would be EPIC!

I could use some. I'm not particularly sure what we should do since the 2.2 section isn't complete and there isn't even a 2.3 section yet. I did do the preliminary stuff like put in the EpicMTD thread and the CWM5 thread into the top. I don't know if I want to go digging around for Froyo stuff or just jump right into GB.

there should also be a link directly to this q/a threads also.. "keep in mind" the more you simplify instructions for a "new person" with the cause and effect reasons, the less you will have a multitude of the same question.

2.3 – ROOTING
Great! Now you know some words! So, what next? Well, we need to achieve root access on your phone. There are a few ways to accomplish this on the Epic. Please note that the one-click methods are hit and miss and are affected by several factors, including computer speed, cable, USB ports, and, for all intents and purposes, random chance. I HIGHLY recommend you open the .bat files and run every command in adb manually. I'll update this guide, eventually, with how to do this
"this has to be totally updated". but i can't see the edit option.
vote to update
The wiki is gold, it holds the fundamentals to all the cool ****. I read that **** searched forms and rooted while reading... lol.. I am still learning from the wiki. I have learned to odin, root, free wifi, and basic cool **** but the wiki always me to venture into other areas if i want to take the time to read and learn. Free Knowledge
It will take time, but the wiki will get updated. But feedback should also be given from everyone to make it much more "noob" friendly.

Why can't DEV'ing for an android be as easy as VB... Its got to go to C and shhtuf... Or even so, I used to make 'theme's' for my Blackberry Bold.... That was way easy... Even theming for ROM's is a lot to read up on... I wish I would have gotten more into Android before my daughter was born.. I am still trying to read up on Themeing using anything but Kitchen.. But it is complicated stuff...
Because I am planning on keeping my SII for a while... Does anyone have any tips for theming? Or know of somewhere I can catch some literature on it?

Correction: There is CURRENTLY no way to root the Verizon Retail Edition of the Galaxy Note 4., since (AFAIK) the bootloader is locked. The same goes for the AT&T version, as well. If you NEED root now, sell your phone and get a different one, OR get the Developer Edition directly from Samsung. I would like to add, that other, new phones that I've looked at, do not have a Micro SD slot. For some people (like me), this is imperative.
But yes, use the search feature of the forums. There's currently a very large "bounty" for anyone (or group of persons) who/that achieve(s) root. There are discussions on root progress for both the Verizon and AT&T models, as well as a heavily moderated development thread (which anyone can view, but if you aren't a dev, you're asked not to post in the thread).
I assume that if/when root is found, there will be a HUGE announcement.
Coming from my previous phone, the only reason I had to root, was to be able to use certain apps that required root. A very popular one, is Titanium Backup Pro, where you can freeze the bloatware. Additionally, to install custom ROMS that did not have bloatware. Considering that the Note 4 has 3x the amount of RAM, this so far isn't a problem.
Another thing that comes in handy, is Debloater. Kind of the same principle of freezing your apps, if I understand correctly. Use at your own risk.
That said, yes, we don't have root., yet. Yes, it sucks, but it's not a complete lost cause. It just means that you can't use some root required apps, yet. One other thing, I was just informed about an app called Helium where you could perform backups without root. I have yet to try it, as I'm barely setting it up right now. I also have two other apps that back up my call logs and my SMS messages.
Oh yeah, when root is announced and is available, it will be everywhere haha

And someone with two posts decided to flame someone for asking an admittedly dumb question after everyone had already shown him where to look, he already acknowledged the answer to his question, and the whole thread hadn't had a reply in three weeks. Way to resurrect a non-issue so you could be Tommy Toughnuts on the interwebs.
Read the OP of this thread. Bookmark it and check it out once in awhile in case for updates. I posted a request to have a thread called "Root Status" and the OP of the following thread chimed in and volunteered to keep the OP updated with root information. Not EXACTLY what I wanted, but I guess it works. I was looking for something in the topic title called Root Status, and something that was pinned/stickied AND locked just to have something more direct, since people's attention spans/patience are so short anyway.

Hello guys
I know this sounds very silly... but im in need of help.
I had started my moding/custom rom etc. back in the galaxy S2 days... then moved to S3, S4 and so forth... but currently my finances wont allow me to buy flagship... which is the reason why im posting this.
Recently my phone died...and i went out and got something i could afford (or at least my Credit card could) and got me a huawei y5ii (cun-u29) where there is virtually no info available... and kingroot or other easy methods won't work....
... nevertheless, this is supposed to be a temporary phone for me; but now the question is, what can i get (on the cheap side) that can be easily modified and may/will run a custom ROM (preferably cyanogenmod... or not necesarelly easy, but at least something popular enough.
i'll kindly wait for your replies...
thank you in advance

So I apologize if the title is a little too long but I just wanted to let everybody know if are like me and you wanted to get on the new beta for Android 10 but you don't have an unlocked or way to unlock your phone I am here to tell you that there is indeed a way.
the nice thing is that this does not trip Knox in anyway. It also does not void your warranty so if you are interested and you don't understand some of the posts in the flashing sections or you're too afraid because you don't want to mess anything up let me know.
I would post how to do it on here but I don't want to post something that people have already figured out I was just stating that for me as an autistic guy who had a little bit of trouble understanding the flashing guides I'm telling you that after about six hours of reading and messing with my phone and also having high anxiety because I did not want to screw it up in any sort of way...
The proof is in the screenshots like I said if you want to know how to do it, comments on this post and I will make a YouTube video showing how to do it that way it's easy for anybody to follow.
I also want to add that none of the bugs are present in the build I'm using now... My games seem a lot faster my speech-to-text seems a lot more correct and honestly I'm really glad I tried this...
im not sure i follow... can't anyone do this now without any kind of hacking? i literally just got the s10+ today (us unlocked version). it took me only minutes to register for the beta program and then download the update ota. im on ui2 and android 10 now.
