Restarting a Lumia 900 after a Device Freeze - Nokia Lumia 900
This is not an original idea. Lots of info in several different threads. Thought I would pull it into 1 with a Title to go with it.
I've tried every step in all the threads about restarting and resetting the Lumia 900. These are the ones that work for me.
First, the information is located on the Nokia support page here. Its titled, " How do I restart a device which has an integrated battery if the device jams or freezes", and is located in the Support FAQs. Essentialy, hold the power button for 8-10 seconds. The device will power off. Once the device is off, you and power it back on like usual.
Button combination to hard reset the device are located here, The article is located, again, on the Nokia Support page and is titled, "Device turn offs?restarts /freezes."

You have the following three (3) options:
Warning: try options 2 and 3 only if option 1 does not help, as the reset means the personal data is erased. Options 2 and 3 erases all the personal content, including apps that have been purchased and downloaded (may be re-downloaded again) and restores the factory settings.
1) Reboot your phone.
For phones with integrated battery (e.g. Nokia Lumia 800):
1.Press and hold the power key for about 10 seconds.
2.To switch your phone on again, press the power key
For phones with removable battery (e.g. Nokia Lumia 710):
1.Switch off your phone.
2.Remove the battery.
3.After a few seconds, re-insert the battery and switch on your phone.
2) Select Settings > About > reset your phone.
3) If the phone software has frozen, you can perform a hardware reset.
1.Press and hold the volume down and camera keys.
2.Press and hold the power key.
3.When the phone screen goes black, release the power key, but continue holding the volume down and camera keys, until the phone reboots.
These are the only steps I could reproduce on my phone. It cost me my last setup because I really didn't think it would work. The others did not. Oh well. My lumia 900 paid a price for the service of all !!

My Lumia 900 shut off on me, and no matter what i couldn't get it to turn back on. So i called my friend at the local AT&T store and he told me the hard restart trick for it, and also the total wipe restart trick. So here it is for anyone else who gets the unresponsive black screen..... I did the hard reset on mine and it is working perfectly fine, and I did not lose any of my apps, contacts etc...
For the hard restart -Hold the DOWN VOLUME BUTTON & THE POWER BUTTON IN ( AT THE SAME TIME ) UNTIL IT RESTARTS.
For the total hard reset - HOLD THE DOWN VOLUME BUTTON, THE POWER BUTTON, & THE CAMERA BUTTON IN ( AT THE SAME TIME ) UNTIL IT RESTARTS.
I hope this helps out if you have the same thing happen to yours.

as mentioned previously, and on the Nokia site, holding the power button down for 10 seconds or so, will do the job. No need to hold the volume down. Go ahead, try it. It works.
Vol down +camera, press power until it vibrates is the recommended hard reset(return to factory) settings. Continuing to hold the power button may initiate a restart before a reset is done. Go ahead, try it. You'll see the difference.
I've actually tried all these combinations. Vol down+power is just a wasted button press, but no harm. Power continually through a reset could force unwanted reboot.

after trying this several times, it appears that volume down+power may additionally reset or clear IE cookies . When performing those steps, all is passwords are blanked, is history is gone, and at least once, my exchange email was reset. Exchange was treated like I never synced before. It's setup, bit acts like first sync.
I'll look further into this.
Wonder if the Vol Down/Power Button simulates a battery pull, which is different than power off/on. Maybe discharging a capacitor or something to clear cache.
Btw, would have quoted your comment but I updated Board Express this morning and they screwed it up again. Error when trying to quote.

no worries, I am not able to duplicate this. I have noticed that is in WP, when running into a problem, will stop, return to desktop. Upon starting is again, history appears to have been cleared. I know this is a default action in WP, for apps as well as ie, so this may have been a coinincidence when I tried power down.
I think if the keystroke was significant, Nokia would have listed it on their support page. AT&T on the other hand does also sell Samsung and HTC phones, which have various button combinations. Confusing the button combos would be an easy unintentional thing to do.

found on net... ---- start crtl+<c> / crtl+<v> This can be tricky, So I know from trial and error, Since there are not many guides out there that explain in detail on how to do this, with this particular device, I have decided to go ahead and make one up for you guys. Here are the steps: Step One: Preform power down *Hold the power button* Till the phone is 100% powered down and all you see is a black screen *keep in mind if your device is plugged into a power source or computer link this will not work!* Step Two: (Use both hands while doing this it will be much easier!) Place 1 finger on each of the Soft keys. http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j271/thesr5_2006/dash.gif Step Three: Press the power Button and hold for no more than 2 sec well holding the two soft keys (do not hold the power button till the phone turns on) ONLY PRESS THE POWER BUTTON DO NOT TURN THE PHONE ON. After pressing the power key keep your fingers on the Two Soft keys until you see a the phone turn on and a black screen come up with white writing. Once you see this screen Press the Green Send key and there you go you have just performed a hard reset on the T-Mobile dash without using the settings screen on the phone. 8) ---- end crtl+<c> / crtl+<v> holpe it helps some one with similar problems... pls someone make it sticky... Switching off the Artemis
Yesterday I found out I can completely switch off my artemis by holding both soft-buttons and holding the power button for about 5 seconds. A pop up window appears saying: Warning Power will be turned off, and you may lose data if you have not saved them. Do you want to continue? After pressing yes the screen turns dark and the led's stop flashing. The device seems to have been powered down. When pressing the power button, the device enters the boot screen as if just been given an soft reset. Couldn't find this in the forum of the wiki, so I thought I wanted to share this. Regards!
This is standard behaviour on WM-based devices....afaik....
[Q] Boot loop with a difference...
Took my phone out of my jacket pocket earlier since I thought I could hear a weird buzzing noise every ~8seconds. Looked at my phone and can see it's stuck in a boot loop. I can't hold the power button to turn it off it gets as far as the HTC screen and then goes black. I've tried to get into recovery mode (just holding down the volume - button). It does work to get in there but I only have ~8 seconds before it goes black and reboots again, doesn't seem to be able to pic any of the different options in there though (with - or +) This phone is stock O2 (EIRE) never been touched not even rooted. Anyone have seen these issues with HTC One X? :crying: Is there any recommendations that I can do? (key combo) Hoping that when the battery dies it'll go away... doesn't feel to stable though!
I have an idea ...... turn it in for warranty right away
anything to try first?
Hi, Try this: Hold power button together with volume down simultaneously till the phone reboots. Still holding both buttons you should go to service menu. Then choose bootloader with using volume key down/up and when the bootloader is selected press once power button. You should go to bootloader menu, from which you select power off and press power menu. Your phone should be power off. Then try to press again power and volume down buttons till you gonna gain in service menu. From there you should find and select factory reset and press power button once. Your phone should be resented and then just reboot. If everything is correct your phone will be with everything reserved and also your data and settings will be gone, but at least will work. Then you should set again your settings and preferences. Hope this could help to get your mobile working again. Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium

Click to collapse Thanks dude, that almost worked... got a bit further after factory reset... went to the O2 splash logo and then back to beginning... actually tried it again before hitting reply, wanted to make sure that I actually had time to hit the factory reset before the phone rebooted (8seconds, less actually seems to be 2-3 seconds then a bit longer after...) I've got a feeling the phone is/has overheated and resetting itself. I think it's rubbish you can't take the battery our of these!
Finally stopped rebooting, battery must be knackered. Will leave it for a while and then start a charge, think it's going into an O2 outlet Monday!
As soon as I started charging the phone booted up and back to loop...
Sorry mate ...like i said, warranty case
Random Boxes and "Press power button and volume to restart phone"
A few days ago, my HTC One M8 came up with a little box on the screen saying "to restart the phone, Press the power button and the volume down button for 10 secs". I had not done anything to the phone so i went to swipe it away and it would not. I could use any apps or panels under the message but the box with the message stayed there. Then another panel came up with the "shut down, restart and airplane mode" when i did not even press the power button to get to that panel. It would then keep switching between the power saver screen (blank screen) then back to the "airplane mode" box randomly. And the power button becomes hyper sensitive like its a touch button rather than a press button. Ive tried to factory reset the phone and clear out the cache but to no avail. I thought it might have been a virus...managed to put a virus checker on but found nothing. Phone is stock and nothing changed on it. Had it for over a year now with no probs Android version = 6.0 HTC Sense = 7.0 Software = 6.12.401.4 Please help...or is the phone knackered? Thx in advance
Sounds like your power button is malfunctioning. Not a whole lot you can do, except maybe cleaning around the button, to see if some debris or residue is making it "stick". A more extreme measure, might be to take apart the phone and clean around the button. But such an invasive measure might not be worthwhile (and may do more harm than good), as the problem may be with the electronic components themselves.

can not access recovery on htc one m8
What I basically need: I want to access recovery(or bootloader, I am not sure what its really called) to do a factory reset. History of the problem: My little sister entered the pattern incorrectly too many times and now the phone is locked asking for gmail and password. Although I know it, but the phones wifi is disabled, so it says "wrong username or password" and hence I can not unlock it. I want to do a factory reset via the recovery but the phone is not going into it even though I press volume down + power(I also tried the volume up). USB debugging is off, and the device is not rooted... please help me, how can I get around this damn problem?
TDm3732 said: I want to do a factory reset via the recovery but the phone is not going into it even though I press volume down + power(I also tried the volume up). Click to expand... Click to collapse Power+vol down doesn't do anything (will not get you to bootloader) if the phone is on. This only works when the phone is powered off. If power+vol up didn't go anything, it's probably because you didn't hold the buttons long enough. Hold power+vol up (and don't let go) until the screen goes dark (may take more than a minute in some conditions) meaning it is going to reboot. The moment the screen goes dark, let go of those buttons and only hold vol down. Don't let go, until the white bootloader screen appears. If you fail to get into bootloader (the phone just reboots, tried to go to OS) that means you didn't do the button combo correctly. Either you started pressing vol down too late, or let go too early. Just repeat the sequence until you get it right.
Thank you for replying I said what you did, unfortunately it doesnt work
TDm3732 said: Thank you for replying I said what you did, unfortunately it doesnt work Click to expand... Click to collapse What doesn't work? I outlined a few steps. Need more details. The basic reboot sequence (holding power+vol up) does it reboot the phone or not? This is hard coded into the device. It works in any condition short of a brick. It even works when the phone is powered off. The only time I've seen it fail is if your vol button or power button is broken.
ok, here is how it goes; I turn the phone off I press the voldown + power, the phone turns on, I release none of them, everything goes very normally, when the phone is at the lock screen, there is a messege on the display saying "to restart the phone, continue holding the power button for 3 seconds" and it counts down to 2 and then 1, it stops at 1, everything else is normal(except the home and back buttons have been flashing-turning on and off-since the start of the process). now I continue on holding both buttons until the phone autolocks, and here it goes to eternity, nothing happens form here just flashing home and back buttons.. I did the same process for volup+power. I did several times, each taking more than one minute.. and all my buttons are working, I can assure you of that..

I don't think I've seen that issue you described, where the capacitive buttons are flashing. Essentially, any time the phone reboots, if you hold vol down, it should go into bootloader. Or in the fully powered off condition, hold the vol down, and press and release power button (don't release vol down).
yeah, I read a tone about it and nothing worked. It seems my Htc is special
