Quick question about using the g nexus for Tmobile and Att - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Does this phone run well enough to be a daily driver on tmo with 4g while on the road even more doesit work with Att 4g lte? How do I knitter I'm getting the compatible one for my carrier which is TMobile right now, and roll be Att in the future. Where can I also get the best warranty and overall price with product quality guarantee? Is it necessary to get the western Europe version with yakja and will the be a quality difference in other versions from school the other regions?

I bought my Gnex from Expansys-usaafter reading that it was a pretty reliable place to get the yakju version. I also bought a Square Trade warranty for about $70 that includes accidental damage protection as well, just in case. I've had the phone for a couple of weeks now on T-mobile and it works perfect I travel with it daily and have yet to have a signal issue or anything like that.

The gsm version (aka not he verizon versions) will work as well as any phone. E.g. the bottlekneck will be the network, not the phone.

Hey I'm sorry, th banks for all the info and concern it is really helpful I appreciate the concern. Anybody know if the g nez is worth buying if it's going for 450 on new egg and Amazon? And will I be feeling different if I get a sakju alternative like from Japan or anything different from other parts of the world in Asia or East Europe which aren't directly supported from Google and end up changing out the radios and the firmware. Will the be a lead to a loss or success?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium

I think its a damn steal for $450 and I'd jump on it in a second. To me this is the best phone on the market going for such a cheap price.

Are all the gnez the same with hardware specs?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium

Let's say I get a different variation of sakju I should be able to turn my phone into sakju and get it working with Google like it too right?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium

So what is the negative difference from the Amazon version and the yakju version, and would it matter if going to root and install custom roms?
Sent from tapatalk V6 B2 from ics powered vibrant

From what I understand yakju just means it has yakju radio and firmware for ota updates from Google, what I think is when you buy a gnez that you can mode it into yakju with flashes of radio and firmware. Just a thought.

Development process

OK so I'm really not sure why all the Galaxy S2s have ICS but the T-mobile version. So my question is who's responsible to develop the version for the T989, Samsung or T-mobile? I don't understand why the ATT version and the international version have had their ICS for so long and we have to work on porting a version. So if someone has knowledge as to the development cycle of software upgrades and who's responsible (carrier, manufacturer, Google) to get a version out to the phone can you let me know.
Samsung builds it, T-Mobile tests it and adds their BS. Atleast that's my understanding

that is correct, for all carriers. Samsung releases touchwizzed stock ics with Samsung bloat, Carriers add more bloat, then OTA/send it to your phone
The sprint and att versions are closer to the international version than ours are. Which allows them to get ports faster.
International is powered by the exynos soc
Tmobile version is powered by the qualcomm soc

They made a decision to give us an soc that had higher theoretical download speeds.
The note skyrocket and ours got screwed because they thought download speed was more important.
I cant be mad because I bought the phone knowing what soc it had.
It was either that or the amaze 4g.
Thanks
Well thank you for all the information. So if Samsung is busy working on getting the Galaxy S III out then I guess it might be a while since ours is crap. I bought the T-Mobile version for two reasons:
1) Faster downloads (I get 12-14 megs /sec) so I was told that was faster than ATT would provide.
2) There is no overage charges.
So if I exceed my monthly cap my bill doesn't go up and next month it will reset back to 4G speed; I can live with a few days of slower speed if needed. Basically the T989 version is crappier and I'd been better off buying an international version off the internet instead of buying the phone from T-mobile. For example I went to Corning's site and thought it had Gorilla Glass too. I found out by researching XDA that indeed it doesn't. Well I guess I'm stuck for 2 years now. Really wish I had known that what I was purchasing was the stepchild version.
Thanks you everyone for explaining the issue. Guess I'll keep looking for a good ICS ROM on the forums.

I have t-mobile, but if I had att I wouldn't switch just because of handset availability.
If you are out of contract you should weigh the pros and cons of each in terms of coverage in your area, pricing of comparable plans to satisfy your needs, and THEN device selection.
Plus if you wait a lil longer you can maybe get your hands on the red version!
You realise you can get the AT&T GS3 overnighted to you. You just have to call up and ask for one.
I have a new line with the one x and I'm within my 30 days maybe I'll just see if bb has them. I would switch carriers based on horrible service that att has

If Best Buy does have them in stock for AT&T, which is a HUGE IF, they are saying they cannot sell them because AT&T has not announced an official release date/launch date. I know, that makes not sense and is a huge lie, but that is what they are saying.

[Q] Wanting to buy an S3 in hawaii, wondering if it will work anywhere else

Hi all, i travelling to hawaii soon, and was thinking about purchasing a galaxy s3 while i am there, will i have any problems using this phone once i return to australia, i also noticed there are many variants of the s3, is there any i should avoid, or are they all the same but with different bundled software ?
i am keen to flash this device with custom roms in the future, so bundled software is not a huge concern of mine
Its either at&t or T-Mobile versions of galaxy s3 will work in your country but remember it will be sim locked...
Edit: might vary in Hawaii not sure if T-Mobile has network there...
Sent from my SGH-T999V using XDA Premium HD app

Wouldn't i be able to use the application 'GalaxSim Unlock' to unlock the sim, or would the S3's in hawaii likely be the Us qualcomm based GS3's ?
Why dont you just get one in Australia? Seems like a lot of trouble to go through? When you in Hawaii you just have to put a prepaid sim in it for it to work. Then when you go back home you have a phone that works well for your country without the hassle of doing something special to the phone to make it work for you. Plus you wouldn't be able to access the 4G networks of the Australian carriers with US variants.

Because they are much cheaper to buy, also, i do not consider unlocking/flashing etc to be a difficult task, i actually enjoy it, call it a pastime that i enjoy if you wish.
Also, only the 4G version of the S3 is going to work on a 4G network, so if i dont buy the 4G version, its not going to be a problem anywhere in the world

T-Mobile will launch refreshed Galaxy S III with LTE support

Source: http://www.theverge.com/2013/1/8/38...aunch-refreshed-galaxy-s-iii-with-lte-support
At a CES briefing today, T-Mobile CTO Neville Ray revealed to The Verge that the company will launch a refreshed version of Samsung's wildly popular Galaxy S III that features support for its upcoming LTE network — a network that has now been confirmed to launch commercially any week now. It's not yet known whether the phone will be marketed as a new, distinct model or as a silent and unadvertised swap on store shelves.
Though the Galaxy S III that's presently being offered by T-Mobile does not support LTE, the slightly newer Galaxy Note II does; Ray tells us that it'll require a "small" software update to enable it once it's available. No other LTE-capable phones have been announced by T-Mobile yet, but it's likely that we'll see some announcements as the first markets go live across the first and second quarter of the year.

I guess once this phone is released, there needs to be a detailed teardown (anandtech / ifixit) that compares the old T999 with the new T999L.
Hopefully there are no hardware differences, and everything is firmware/rom related.
If there are hardware differences, maybe we can start frankensteining a broken T999L (i.e. cracked screens etc) with a working T999 LOL

I agree. Glad we have choice and not stuck with just one . I love my sgs3. There are days I wish there was more I could do but for the most part it functions as it should and im not ready to fork out more money for a slightly updgraded version of this one. By slightly I mean "in my opinion" . Don't get all technical with me because I'm aware of the spec differences. If my phone isn't dead by next year around the holidays or even after that is consider seeing what's available. Sgs6 or even whatever the future holds.

Im kinda waiting for the Note 3 to comes out. That would have more features than that GS4. I think that should be a nice upgrade from my GS3. But then again T-Mobile did it again like they did with the Vibrant, I am not sure if this version of the S3 will have a lower memory or it will be the same as this just lte added.

Don't forget T-Mobile also abandoned the Vibrant when they released the 'better' version. We got stuck with Froyo officially. The very same could happen once more with us. There is a possibility that MD5 could be their last update for the non-LTE GS3. I seriously hope they don't forget the millions that bought the non-LTE GS3 as they did with the Vibrant.

Yeah but bottom line is even if they decide to ditch this version of the updates I think it would be a lot easier to port it from the GS3 with lte! Even thought I dont think that Samsung will make a 100% different hardware of the one with LTE. Look at it this way. Even though AT&T. SPRINT, VERIZON have LTE GS3's and we can port roms from them. Or maybe tmobile will release the update to both devices
I doubt you have to worry bout getting keft out of the update loop. I'm guessing they will be virtually identical except for modems and drivers.

Corrent I believe this new LTE GS3 will be the same exact phone... We should be good in porting roms from it just like Verizon, Sprint. And since is the same phone I wonder if we can flash radios from it too. Just like on the Hercules days when we could flash radios even from the Blaze 4G
I don't get why they would do this, T-Mobile or Samsung. Just release an S III version with hardware capabilities for LTE??? Just money hungry? Why do people get so worried about it? With HSPA+ I get 25 mb down, it's no 50 but on my phone I won't recognize the difference in loading web pages, or anything... My WiFi is 38mb down on my phone I tested both WiFi and Cell Data, no difference in loading a web page, maybe .5 seconds or 1 second, but is that what people are worried about? Seems so minuscule to me. Yet, there are about 20 threads on LTE and this phone, and an official thread with 13 pages.... and some of that cleaned out I'm sure, because people get so angry over the subject. Just boggles my mind, am I missing something here?

You're not missing anything. I completely share your feelings in this. When I owned the nexus 4 there were threads all about this also when a Google update disabled late on the nexus 4. People were all up in arms about it. Then after they found a way around it complained about battery life. We have become an instant society. If people perceive that late will get them something faster then they'll think they "need " it. I'm on WiFi 99% of the time. And when I am out of range my 4g is just as fast.

This thread was not about actually LTE. I have seen so many threads about LTE on this model of the gs3. I been telling em about this new model that tmobile has said it will come when they had that iphone conference. And I know what u mean there were a lot of lte threads. In my opinion i am not going to jump ship because of the lte. I can careless with it now that I have tested it with a att gs3 with a friend and I was getting better speeds than him. Maybe people just need to move on and next time u buy a phone they will be lte enable.. But again I don't know if tmobile pay less for these gs3 without lte in it. Its all about money. Just like some carriers prefer you pay another $500 for a phone that will have a minor update. Like for instance the vibrant and the galaxy s 4G. They said that the vibrant was not a 4G phone. They both had the same speeds in my experience that vibrant ran HSPA+ just like tmobiles so call 4G its HSPA+ so no difference there. Although for me the vibrant was a lot better. One thing though I wish is that I ne of these days tmobile will say that they will start saling none carrier branded phones. And there won't be a difference between the ones in the us and the ones international.
i like the idea
