Don't know if it's possible, but would there be a way to add a data monitor to the notification bar when you drag down so it would so you how much data you've used? Would be really useful
Set limits
Hello,
If you are talking about DATA MONITOR app from Sony Mobile Communications,
then you need not worry about exceeding your permissible usage limit as you can set alarms for the TOTAL DATA, SENT DATA AND RECEIVED DATA with respect to your Mobile Internet Plan..
I presently have 1GB data plan and I have my ALARM set to 1000mb...
So, notifications can be avoided ..thus saving some juice
If you are so keen in having a notification icon...then try this app:Onavo Count | Monitor Data

Good day
I use 3G watchdog which is very lightweight, got great reviews and has notification icons and widgets.
I use 3G Watchdog Pro but Onavo also has some good reviews.
I don't really recommend the Data Monitor by SE.
Comes down to user's need....

I have this in my guide post but thought it needed its own post. If you have a capped data plan then you definetely need to check this out.
It has basically turned my 4GB plan into a 20GB plan!
The SuperUser's Guide: How To Extend Your Data Plan
Onavo Extend lets you get more out of your data plan, so you can do more web browsing and apps, consume more music, video and photos on 3G without breaking your data cap.
After you install Onavo Extend you can go back to using your phone or tablet as before. In the background, data usage from all apps and web browsing is compressed so that you do more with your Android’s mobile data month after month. And, if you travel abroad with your phone, the money you save could be substantial.
IF YOU'VE INSTALLED A CUSTOM ROM:
Some ROMs and kernels are missing important networking support that Android 4.0 APIs, and Onavo Extend, rely on.
If you've received a message saying your version of Android is unsupported, or if the application always says "service paused", please contact us via the "Feedback" menu item so we can help.
Trying a different ROM or kernel should help as well
This is confirmed working on AOKP
Not to fond of having a VPN on my phone...
VPN = all data traffic is passed through your server which could easily be picked out, filtered...etc...
The great thing about it is that you can turn it on and off at will, and it does not run when on wifi.
So basically for normal day to day use you can save your data plan, but if you have sensitive info you can use your secured wifi or turn off the service.

My data usage has been rising. the day my data renewed, it instantly went up to 10 mb of data used in an hour.
If you go to Settings > Data Usage, you can see which applications use data on your phone. As the notice says, what is shown on the phone is the data measured by your phone, and your mobile provider may account for data usage differently. Still, it may help you pin point which apps consume most of your data. You then may want to delete the apps in question if you don't use them a lot, find replacement apps, or limit data usage for these apps to WiFi only -- to access this capability, an additionnal app will be needed; try searching the Play Store for this kind of tool.
I had the same issue but found the my wifi setting was to turn off in sleep mode, you can adjust this in your settings, it helped to change it to never turn off. Also, in the hidden wifi menu, make sure your wifi is set to on, you can access this by going to your keypad in the phone and typing *#0011#. Staying in wifi as much as possible is great, also, use your data toggle.

While looking at the list of apps using the data, you can tap on the ones you don't want running data in background. A detail menu comes up, at the bottom there is a check box to disable background processes on mobile network.

Hi people,
I am having an issue with the data usage feature i wanna know if anybody can help me with this.
My data usage does not measure the mobile network traffic and doesn't let me put a traffic limit either, but it does measure the wifi traffic.
Does anybody know why this happens?
just in case the mobile data is on and i am able to use internet without any trouble.
Thanks.
In my old stock ROM (GB27), I could monitor 3G data usage, set limits and disaalow apps from using mobile data in the settings/data usage screen. In Villumaniti, I only see wifi usage or maybe a combo of wifi and mobile data. I can't see just mobile data usage, set limits or disallow apps from using mobile data. Is this a known issue/feature? I use Ting if that makes any difference.
Hey gang,
Just curious what this symbol is, it's popped up occasionally in my status bar, especially when traveling.
I can't seem to share the screenshot. It's next to my Wi-Fi symbol and it's a circle that's 2/3rds filled around a plus sign. It doesn't seem to show in any active app.
Thanks for your expertise.
Steve
It means Data Saver is enabled. When on, background data usage for apps are restricted when not on WiFi. Useful for managing small prepaid data plans or nearing mobile data throttle caps.
Settings > Networks > Mobile Data > Menu button > Data Saver
You can whitelist specific apps to have background data while Data Saver is enabled by selecting the Unrestricted Data Access option here as well.
There is also a toggle for it available in the Notification Panel you pull down from the status bar. It looks similar to the status bar icon.

That explains a lot, thank you! I wondered why MMS weren't downloading automatically. Time to go turn that off, I'm lucky enough to have unlimited still. You rock!
