[REQ] Kernel: usbaudio.o - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

When the T989 ICS code is finally released and some of you talented kernel developers are working with it, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE add usbaudio.o so we can use USB DACs bypassing the crappy internal audio components. A lot of people want this desperately!

is this what you are looking for? I can make that happen...
Audio Gadget (EXPERIMENTAL) (USB_AUDIO)
CONFIG_USB_AUDIO:
Gadget Audio is compatible with USB Audio Class specification 1.0.
It will include at least one AudioControl interface, zero or more
AudioStream interface and zero or more MIDIStream interface.
Gadget Audio will use on-board ALSA (CONFIG_SND) audio card to
playback or capture audio stream.
Say "y" to link the driver statically, or "m" to build a
dynamically linked module called "g_audio".

Hmm, that might work? I'm not a developer so I dunno...?
Here, you can get this USB sound card for $1.73 free shipping (ships from Iowa) and then you can easily test it with an OTG cable: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sound-Card-5-1-USB-Audio-Microphone-Adapter-For-Laptop-/370594371214?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item564925568e
That's basically all we want, "driverless" USB audio support.

This migth be a noob question but what exactly dose this do?

To put it simply, a usbaudio.o addition would allow USB host to recognize a generic USB audio device, be it a set of USB speakers, USB car audio, USB sound card or USB headsets.
A few reasons for wanting such a thing would be that you would:
1. Bypass internal sound amplification and digital-analog conversion, so you get cleaner sound if you have the gears to support it,
2. Use USB headsets, speakers, car audio and whatnot, the same way that you would've used them for Win/Mac PCs, now on your phone,
3. Not having to be tied down to the single 3.5mm output as you can now hook your phone to a USB sound card that can get optical out even, and this is more portable than doing so with a laptop or having to resort to a dedicated music player.
@thederekjay: I'd be really grateful if you can implement this in your kernel man. Cyanogenmod 7/9 seem to have this prepackaged, but you can't exactly take Cyanogenmod kernel and slap any random rom on it.

Yep, the big thing that makes me want it is greatly improved sound quality. The Yamaha chip in the T989/Skyrocket is pretty bad, even supercurio (Voodoo Sound) won't touch it. Turning my phone into an über music player will allow me to easily use things like Pandora and the upcoming official BBE player (currently only available on iOS, but I talked to a developer and he said it'll be coming in late spring/early summer for Android devices) while maintaining audiophile-grade sound quality. For a completely portable solution I have the Fiio E7 amp which has built-in USB audio and doesn't drain power from the connection (a workaround for devices that do require power from the USB connection is to use a powered USB hub in-between). However, with this feature you could just as well hook it up to a $10,000 sound system that has driverless USB audio and *still* have audiophile-grade sound quality because it's a purely digital signal.

Now that the T989 ICS source has been leaked I just wanted to remind developers to please consider adding this in. Thanks!

Android 2.2 6,5" CAR Device
There is an Android 2.2 800Mhz 256MB 8GB 6,2" TFT CAR DVD on sale (800 USD to door in Russia) that I have bought recently and after some software installations it does deliver what I have wanted to have in the car.
Nevertheless there are a few major complaints to its performance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cx53a6N7_ws
As well there are several other minor things that would be great to change if possible.
If there is someone interested and able to cook a custom ROM for this device - I can send this device for free as a gift and for experiments. We really want a good ROM for this CA-Fi Car Stereo and the guy's in China don't seem caring enough.
I will check this thread once in a while and provide contact details for anyone interested in developing this device. It is very close to being a great thing for a CAR!
I have updated my email in the XDA profile so you can as well use this option to contact me.
PS
I Have a ROM update file (192MB) that came from the device vendor (dealer). I can send it out for revision.
The way to install this rom on the car stereo is to extract files to the root of a microSD card, insert it, switch off the device, then, while holding the screen tapped, power on – the device starts an install mode. When finished it asks for screen calibration and restarts with a new rom as after a hard reset (erases everything).
And there is the Parrot as well.
i've gone down the route of car pc etc, it was running win 7.
to be honest, they're wayyy to much fuss and aggro.
the sound quality sucked, the screen was **** (it was cheap - £250 "cheap") and broke shortly after a year of having it.
a decent head unit, with either apt x bluetooth dongle plugged in, or just the 3.5mm with hox is much much better. sound quality is way better, and i don't have to put up with some slow 800mhz cpu when all i want is to be driving whilst listening to music
just a fyi for those considering, its a huge cost, for not actually that much benefit (unless you live in your car)
CA-Fi Android Car Radio
I understand you if you only need to have music playing while driving, as well as some people who still prefer using monochrome cell phones. This is a matter of needs.
Regarding the sound quality of this particular CA-Fi device its surprisingly fine. I use its 4x45W out lines conneted directly to car OEM speakers (its a Chrysler PT) and the subwoofer RCA out channel connected via a 1KW Kenwood amplifier to a large Polk Audio woofer. With the available in this device GEQ and Bass/Treble settings the unit provides perfectly sharp and clear sound in the high+mid ranges for the OEM speakers that in company with the powerful sub make a really impressive rich and clear sound scene with no distortion at any volume.
This sound setup is very easy and efficient. Honestly, to my hearing it is not lacking comparing to my previous JVC Mosfet 192/24 DAC car stereo that was routed through amplifiers for all channels to Focal speakers instead of the OEM... That was too much trouble for the gained advantage. Again, depending on the needs. Trully - the sound of this Android Radio is fine, a sound of a branded Hi-Fi car stereo.
And if you had a Win7 Car PC setup that is quite complicated to arrange you should agree that this easy one-box Android PC solution is a great idea. It provides the music and all the tablet PC advantages. It's really nice after switching on the ignition to hear from your car that you have a new e-mail arrived, and enjoy other goodies like that.

yes, I considered the Parrot, but found it limited for modifications and with a too small screen. There is as well a Clarion at present under development, but it does not appeal to me neither. It is a concept from the Clarion Malaysia division and most likely will be limited for modifications; if it will ever be released at all:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNQC56S5NFI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1TFiy2Dsdg
I really have spent some plenty of time on the web before selecting this CA-Fi device and I couldnt find anything better. To be honest I even went trough a mistake and loss of money by ordering an Android/WinCE dual OS device first (by the way its refferted to above in this thread). Result - I installed it into my dad's car (its better than his OEM 2003 Mercedes device anyway). But that one is wierd. My advice: be aware not to get one of those by mistake. For example, mine had GPS only in WinCE and 3G only in Android - so I couldnt have the Navigation system working along with traffic updates.... this spoiled everything for me.
PS
Important to know that CA-Fi offer a few dozens of versions of the same model with different front panels to match many of original car dashboards without the need of modifying the panels - the device fits in as a replacement for the OEM unit! As well for those who think that there are many different Android car stereos to choose from - this may be the same model with different front facing.

It'll be clearer if you check out the link in my previous post. Gnex contains a Samsung SWB-B42 BT 4.0 Dual Band Wlan FM Tx/Rx chip so the hardware is there. The thing is the driver that is currently installed on our gnex only has BT3 coded in. And even if the driver utilizes the phone's BT4.0 capabilities, Android in itself doesn't have native APIs to allow developers to take advantage of the new features.
Sorry if i didn't read the whole link but i was at work so, you can understand... Thank you for the very clear explanation, however it's really really strange this behaviour by google...
Will Google/Android ever get BT4/BLE working on the GNex? Or shall we move on to another device if we need/want it?

[Q] USB DAC support

I recently purchased a USB DAC/amplifier combo to use with my high end IEMs on the go, as well as my sennheiser HD650s at home. They sound/work great with my nexus 7 (cyanogen mod 4.3) with just the stock kernel (faux's kernel works also)
However, i cannot find a kernel for my trust old Gnex (gonna use as a mobile digital audio soruce, the amp dac/amp is tiiiiiinnny but the tablet is so big its just not portable, and my Moto X doesnt support USB audio and has no custom kernels, for the first time I am wishing i had gotten an s4 as even the stock kernel supports USB audio.
So far i have tried: Faux123,
Franco.Kernel,
Glados 2.3 (downgraded to 4.2.2 just to try, and even after loading the modules, nothing..)
and finally stock CM.
None of these even came close to seeming it was registering at the least, much less delivering auditory bliss.
If i need to compile my own kernel and just add in USB audio support, I would love to learn,
ideally though, I would just love to find a kernel that meets my need, rather than having to create one.
Thanks in advance,
J.P.
First off, HD650s rock. Nice choice. Also what DAC/amp?
Anyways.
I somehow recall something about how the kernel version the GNex is on (as opposed to the 3.4 kernels a Nexus 7 totes) does not have any USB audio support. I might be wrong.
Android just rarely caters to the audiophiles, sadly.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I add my question!
Me too try to use my Gnex with the Fiio E18, an USB DAC/AMP that seems to work with many Android device.
When I try to connect the DAC, it seems to be recognized (a red led becomes pink, wich means that the DAC is "connected" somehow), but no sound comes out.
So the question is: the problem is software or is also from the Gnex hardware?
On a thread on head-fi, James (a Fiio employee) says that is a hardware limitation...
But I know that the Gnex can work with pendrive and an OTG cable (I've got mine and it works!), so on the hardware side is this not enough?
And new Android KK 4.4: how it is regarding USB Audio?

4.4.2 enables USB audio out!

Well I am extremely happy right now.
It turns out that with an OTG cable, my 4.4.2 RAZR M can suddenly output audio via USB to my Fiio E17 amplifier. I can finally ditch the 2G iPod touch I have been clinging to for years.
Awesome. Will test with a Droid 3 dock as well

I am just starting to explore the possibilities of using my M for high quality audio. Does the above work without root, custom rom, etc.? I am not rooted and am bootloader locked and need to remain that way.
Are there any decent guides available on the net on this topic? I have been doing a lot of googling and trying to piece things together but haven't found a good consolidated source for information.
Thanks much.

It's called 'class compliant' USB audio device.
If it works on Windows, Macintosh etc. without the need to install a device specific driver, it's probably class compliant.
Btw., the support for OTG connected class compliant USB DACs has been present in CM builds for Razr M/HD family since September 2013.

Make the OnePlus 3 apt-x compatible

Hello !
I have a good apt-x pair of headphones and an apt-x compatible phone for the time being. I thought about buying the OP3(T) but I'd like not to loose this funtionality.
That's why I thougt I could buy an apt-x transmitter and plug it to the jack, in order to have apt-x !
What if i also buy an external DAC and plug the transmitter to it ? Would it work, does it make sense?
So overall, do you think it is a good option to do like that ? Do you have something better ? Or do you think that what I am saying is completely dumb ?
Thanks !
Does apt-x make such a difference that it is worth the effort?

Imo it doesn't if all you do is audio listening. But then again, I reverted back to wired cause even aptx still sucks.
On the other hand, latency response is noticeably better, so in those quite rare instances where I want to watch a movie (from tv mostly) via bt, aptx helps. I mean, without aptx, same content would be unwatchable due to audio lag.

Ah okay, never thought about the latency of bt cause whenever i watch a movie over external speakers i just use aux since the speakers are right next to the tv.
Eventually, I'm working on an apt-x support for a while without success... A lot of phones provide apt-x functionality without hw support.. It's a sw solution, but I didn't find the method to load the closed source codec like BlueZ. If I found working libraries from other phone, I'll let you know...
I swapped from my Xperia Z2 (with apt-x) to my Oneplus 3 and the only device I have that was capable of receiving apt-x Bluetooth audio is my car receiver. I noticed no difference.
Maybe car audio is a poor test because, despite my custom in-car setup with high quality receiver, amp and speakers, the car is very noisy, so some differences are lost to exhuast/wind/tyre/road noise.

Well, to be honest, if you have a great pair of headphones (not necessarily ultra high end, just mid-high headphones) that are compatible, you can hear the difference, it's a question of details imo. And low latency is definitely the first thing you notice. But no matter for music obviously. Is it a deal breaker? Well, I'm asking myself, I might reconsider the Apt-x necessity.
