WTF!! So, it appears ATT removed all the Nokia apps from the phone and you don't have the Nokia Apps in Marketplace! Say it ain't so! I may be taking this bad boy back if that's the case. Can others confirm or think of a workaround? I already tried changing the geography in the desktop marketplace to no avail.
Was your previous phone a WP7? Maybe Microsoft's systems need some time to update so they recognize your Nokia? Just guessing here.

Nah....they're not there.....I was looking for that photo app everyone was talking about....can't find it yet
They will soon appear, don't worry. There's a lot of talk about this in WPcentral forums.
I thought there were no Nokia apps installed by default. Yet, you should be able to go into the Marketplace and then there should be something called Nokia Collection which includes Nokia Drive and all the other Nokia apps.

Actually, read the post on wpcentral, thats not what I was talking about. The marketplace thing, yeah..thats a known situation. I was talking about no nokia apps installed on the phone...no drive, no creative studio...nothing by nokia installed. I know you can find them in the marketplace and it takes a few minutes for the storefront to become active...

None installed by default and you can't find them searching in marketplace.
When I go into the Marketplace the first two items are "AT&T Featured" and "Nokia collection". From the Nokia collection I downloaded CNN, Creative Studio, Nokia Drive, Nokia Maps and Nokia Transit. They are all working fine for me.

Thank goodness. One of the things I'm looking forward to is Nokia Drive. Right now I use TeleNav GPS Nav that was preinstalled on my HTC Arrive. Is Nokia Drive better or is the AT&T navigation app better?
Nokia Drive is much better. Just the fact alone that you can download the maps to your phone and not require a data connection thereafter for navigation is a huge plus.

Yes, you can pick which continent, country, state you want and can remove them if you don't need them there any more. I have my home state loaded on my Samsung Focus using Nokia Drive 2.0 (unbranded) it is 78MB in size. Cali is 140MB.

That's pretty good. Do you know if you can limit it by city/county to make it even smaller? And when you drive out of the territory you have downloaded, does it seamlessly download the area you just drove to or is that part then using your data connection (if you have one)?

Yeah, I don't have ATT Featured or Nokia collection. I knew there was something else missing (Att Featured). So maybe something does need to update in the system in order for those to show up.

So this may have already been answered but what happened to Nokia Music?
Nokia Music has not been release for the US market yet. Only in Europe...Rumor is we will be getting Nokia TV as well but it's only in Finland right now.
By the way...to download all of the USA maps only takes 1.8gig. How do I know this...because I did that so I could use it offline.

Windows Phone 7 Series will not initially offer copy and paste; instead, we try to solve the most common uses for copy and paste via single-tap action. For example, people often want to take an address and view it on a map, highlight a term in the browser and do a search or copy a phone number to make a call. Instead of the user manually doing a copy and paste in these scenarios, we recognize those situations automatically and make them happen with just one touch. In our early testing people have been pleased with this approach, but we're always listening to feedback and will continue to improve our feature set over time based on what we hear.

so what do you guys think now??
So, in other words, copy & paste is officially NOT coming.
I think that this is just PR bull**** which restates what was said at MIX - no copy and paste, and a lame attempt to present smartlinking (which is undoubtedly great stuff) as a solution to this. Saying that something will be done "over time" is equivalent to saying nothing. They don't even specifically say that copy/paste will be done "over time", it's just a vague "our feature set will improve". Of course it will. It just doesn't answer the question.
I frankly don't understand how anyone can buy this as an answer.
In any case, now that PR department took control of the issue, we'll never know anything about it until it happens (which may be 1 week, 3 years after release, or never).

They didn't say even this much, you're imagining it because they worded it this way.
if u look at pass history of these companies, when it says a feature is not needed they are really saying is they wont have it available so we will say its not needed till we have it ready.
by the comment they have made they will at some point add copy and paste.
here are some companies that have said stuff like this:
APPLE =
copy and paste is not needed.
ipods users dont need to watch movies as they only use it for music.
ipod users dont need games as they only use it for music.
Sony =
playstation 3 does not need dual shock in there pads as most people dont want it.
motion games are gimicks.

To bad the media these days runs articles about how unsure Android apps are, and why people should never install apps from outside the trusted market (read: Google Market).
At least Microsoft offers the ability to have five free apps on the marketplace per year. This should cover the hole you otherwise would used 3rd part source installations for.
Also I'm sure they'll offer some business plan, for in-house distribution. Wait and see
Well I am not a developer (yet?) and I still want to install whatever apps I want and not be controlled.
Windows Mobile was a better product that the iPhone but was losing because it was underadvertised, then MS goes and takes everything they were doing right and undoes it...

Just in case anyone was wondering, the Zune client has been updated to 4.7. I don't see any live download links, looks like you need to already have the Zune software installed, and it'll auto-check for updates.
Some nice changes, and the Marketplace for Windows Phone 7 is also live so you can take a look at some of the apps currently available. This just gets me real excited.
That being said, anyone wonder why the Marketplace would be open when no devices are even available. I wonder if devices will be available sooner than we think...
Update: It looks like apps keep getting added and added as time moves on. There were only a handful of apps 10 minutes ago, and now there are a bunch more.
Update 2: Download link! The FULL Zune Client 4.7 package.
Wow, good discovery. Updating now.
edit: Whats strange is a lot of the apps are already reviewed. I dont get it o.o

Well technically the phone has been in testing/use for months now, so i'm sure those reviews are all from internal testers, developers, and the lucky few who get to test out these devices.
awesome, I will be upgrading my software tonight after work There will be phones available in the US on AT&T by Nov 8 and sooner in Europe I believe.
Does anyone have any word on how the Zune software will check it's location? I have a US Zune Pass for my Zune 80 but I'm currently living in the Netherlands (the pass is run on my American bank account). To get the Zune marketplace to show on my desktop I had to set my computer location in Windows to US.
Now the big question is: will a WP7 phone just believe my american hotmail or will it do some nasty IP checks or SIM code checks? I would love to have my Zune account directly connected to my phone, so I'm guessing this will be the deal breaker for me.

What's your country set to in windows? Maybe try changing that and reloading the zune software and see if it works?
Changing Location setting to United States worked, thanks for the great tip!
I think you need to change your computers region to a country where the marketplace is launched, e.g. UK or US.
Installed Zune Software for the first time yesterday.
I like it!
Um, I've had Zune 4.7 for a week now (or more..?).. I just clicked the update button and it did it for me.. so don't know what all the fuss is about. There was about 200 apps when I checked about 4/5 days ago, and as of last count they have 409 apps. Which certainly beats the Zune HD count of like 30 in over 1 year lol.
A few of the app's aren't displaying their picture which is annoying, but it will get there. With 4/5 days left till the launch, I'm not sure if they will get to 2000, but they most certainly are doing a decent job of going about it so far.
Some of the app's look pretty useless, and might never get used, but the xbox live games look GREAT. Can't wait to test this out in a week.
Lack of gaming apps does bother me a bit though.
EDIT: I don't know why but the Zune Software seems a bit sluggish to me now.. it can't be my computer.. its an Alienware so it's fast. Don't know why it lags at times.. it used to be speedy.
I just came over to the WP7 after many years and ROMS with a WM6.5 using Sprint. Sprint navigation was excellent.
I used Nokia Drive today and was somewhat disappointed. Although it was very accurate, I needed to depend totally on the voice instructions. There was no overview of the route to give me a general feel as to what was going to happen next.
On the way home, I used maps and actually the navigation. I saw the directions all listed and felt a little more secure. I really only needed the first few directions to get me to a freeway. By looking at the overview and committing this to memory, I felt more confident and not so lost.
These are just my observations as each person will have his own comfort level.
FYI Nokia Maps can be used without a data connection if you download the maps. I do not believe the maps app has this feature.
The only reason I buy the Nokia Lumia 900 over HTC Titan II is their Nokia Collection apps that is so far more robust than HTC's. I've tried to use the Nokia Drive and it actually did a great job to offer me turn-by-turn navigation with no extra costs...
Drive is pretty decent
Nokia Drive is accurate and decent, but, the lack of lane assist and the constant recalculation and inaccuracy of the ETA are frustrating.
Maps is great for directions or if you're navigating for another driver, but, it's lacking for voice guided navigation while driving.
Garmin Street Pilot is very excellent, though expensive, despite not being able to preload an entire state map. It'll still have your route, at least, if you lose your data connection.
The no data feature is good for folks who don't have a data plan. I always enjoyed the free navigation software they provide. I first had it on my Nokia E72 and loved it. Now that it's on a bigger screen, its even better =)
I'm quite dissappointed by Drive. How do you get to Version 2 of a navigation app without adding the ability to save locations? The version that I have on my old N8 is far more functional including the ability to save locations and announce street names.
Amazingly, Bing maps has the ability to pronounce Street Names, can generate Turn by Turn Directions, but then won't read them to you as you drive, you have to tap the screen to get each prompt. Why get 80% of the way to a solution and then stop?
Combine this with the lack of any integration into the OS that would allow you to navigate to a contact's address or to search for a location in Bing and then navigate to it and you have a huge hole in functionality.
I'm sure this will get fixed in Tango and/or Drive 3.0 but I'm pretty sure my 30 day return window will be over before then and I suspect my Lumia will be available soon as a refurb.
I love the OS, and have used it before, but I expected more of an upgrade from my old Samsung Focus. The other OS's are moving forward so quickly and I'm afraid Windows Phone will be left behind.
I found this extremely annoying:
When you're in Nokia Map, there is no way to get turn-by-turn driving directions within that app or at least have it to automatically switch to Nokia Drive app.
I used Nokia Map and looked for an address to get directions from my current place but then unlike Google Maps on Android, I had no option to get turn-by-turn driving directions. I had to exit Nokia Map and do everything all over again in Nokia Drive! This is not going to work for me.

Or you can find the others there.
Hi,
I have been an iPhone user for since the first one and have had the Navigon app since it became available. I have had an HD7 on TMo for over a year and was glad to see Navigon added to the MarketPlace.
I agree that the Nokia Drive app leaves a bit to be desired when compared to full fledged apps that you pay alot for. Given that Nokia Drive is free, and has the ability to be customized with voices, etc., I give it a solid option for someone looking for a free GPS app with pared down features.
Manually downloading maps that you need saves space, but you can only do that via WiFi (same for Navigon). I didn't have issues with ETA times, as others have posted about, and the built in POI/Search functions were accurate.
I have both Nokia Drive and Navigon on my new Lumia 900. The Navigon Lane Assist, speed and camera alerts, Live traffic, and ability to use Google search for local POIs are nice features. Again you pay for this, but it was worth it for me.

So far, HTC Locations app on my HTC Titan is far better than Nokia Drive on my Lumia 900. Nokia Drive feels like the typical Nav apps I used in Windows Mobile days.
I'm very dissapointed by the Nokia collection apps, both quality and quantity. So far, there is no DLNA apps (I know it is still in Beta), no MMS setup app (for use with other networks).

Yeah I wasn't sure if I was missing something. What I do is look up all my destinations at home. I pull up each destination and press "START." I then press Stop navigation. Now go into "Set destination." Next go into "Last destinations." Your destinations should be in there. Kind of clunky but it works.

You can search for an address within Nokia Drive. You can search by address or name of business. Bing and outlook integration would be great but I've done okay with the integrated search function within Nokia Drive. I haven't given it a real thorough work out though so it may fail me. Is that a bad thing? What were you expecting? I pull up the app. Search for an address. Press Start navigation and it accurately tells me how to get where I'm going. I can download a map for the entire US at one go or I can just download maps one state at a time. I use no data while on the road. All of this is free on a free phone. I don't care about the data but if I go somewhere rural or something knocks out the cell signal I don't want to be up a creek 100 miles from home. If someone wants me to pay they are going to have to wow me.

NO.... simple answer.... Long answer. 3D is computer animated or simulated images that give the idea of 3D of buildings, while street view show idiots crashing their bikes.... I mean pictures of the road from a 360 degree prospective.... well from ever 15 or so degrees that is.
Also to rebuttal the original post
Windows 8 or WP8 should, guess I should caveat that word, have "hands free turn by turn" thanks to licensing that didn't make it to the table prior to Mango and i guess Tango. Note "should" but these are all idea that were set forth with Mango that seemed rushed.

LL you may be right. I guess I'm just bitter because having to wait for the ding to tap on the screen for the next directions while driving; it's actually driving me nuts. I mean don't get me wrong, Bing Maps is a very good app and I will just be happy with actual trun by turn navigation like in the old WM days and there is no need for 3D and all that other icandy stuff.
...why don't you use one of the many alternatives with turn-by-turn navigation or voice navigation? Is $ 1.99 too much for you...?
I definitely understand the OP. Having to tap is kind of pointless. Although, I recently had my brother try WP again coming back from Android and he liked the fact that it didn't read each direction out loud unless he acted upon the screen. He says, "Why the hell do I NEED it to tell me to turn when I'm following the map?" He says it gives him the option of hearing it or not. I do have Nokia Drive though and that's Bing maps should be like. Although, the maps and navigation on Android are two separate entities from what I remember?

No, it's not too much; I guess I didn't make my self clear but the alternatives are seprate apps and not intergated. I would like to have Bing maps working like it use to on Windows Mobile where you just told it to look for and address and that was it; it would guide you all the way with out having to hold the phone in our hand like a retard watiting for the next ding or beep to tap on the screen while driving. Do you know what I mean? Just one app not two or three apps, that seems to fragmented to me.
I don't trust Bing navigation. 2 times it led me to the wrong street at the back of someone's house. It expects me to climb up the hill, climb in from the back wall like a thief.
Garmin GPS gives the right directions.

NO.... simple answer.... Long answer. 3D is computer animated or simulated images that give the idea of 3D of buildings, while street view show idiots crashing their bikes.... I mean pictures of the road from a 360 degree prospective.... well from ever 15 or so degrees that is.

Thanks, but that's not what I was asking. I know what 3D maps are. What I want to know is why putting them in the mobile OS is handier than using street view (or in Bing's case Street Slide). Is it just a case of giving more options?
I agree. This is actually what stopped me the most from picking a Titan, and what actually holds some friends of mine from dropping their androids. Also, even in Nokia Maps we still don't have the option to avoid highways and things like that, which kinda sucks.

Bing Maps "best bits" are going to be incorporated into Nokia Maps, which will be replacing Bing Maps entirely, even on non-Nokia devices.
The other day I was toying around with my 800, and at some point Carbon started giving me an error while refreshing the timeline. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it, but after removing it I realized I could no longer find it on the Marketplace. This surprised me quite a bit, so I grabbed my gf's 710 and looked for it but no luck, the app was still missing. Can you guys find it on your Marketplace? Maybe it's just a random bug, but it's weird to get it on two different phones I guess. I also tried to reinstall it through the browser but it doesn't work. I just hope the developer hasn't pulled it for some reason because this is possibly my favorite app, I totally can't live without it.
I found Carbon in Marketplace but it says that "This app is not available for your device. Tap here for more info."
After clicking on the "tap here..." it said:
App not available
This might be because your phone software needs to be updated, the app is exclusive to a different mobile provider, or the app is not available in your region.

I own a Nokia Lumia 800 and I also tried it with my Dell Venue Pro...
On a side note, if you really need an alternative Twitter client, you can try Twabbit - its been touted in the web as an alternative to Carbon. Dunno though since I'm not really into twitter.

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah I somewhat managed to grab a direct link to the app on the marketplace from an app review site, it gets me to the app but then it behaves exactly like yours. I've bought Rowi for now, it's pretty similar to Carbon, not as good as the real thing tho
I'll try to emal the developer anyway, I'd love to know what's going on, I paid for the app after all, so I'm supposed to be able to use it no matter what...I'll post the answer here, just in case someone else is interested.
Damn, it really seems like the Carbon team left WP, this sucks....

That's a bummer...I'm curious, will you be getting your money back? I mean you paid nearly $2 for the app and suddenly you now won't be able to use it? Or was it your fault for uninstalling the app so they now owe you nothing?
I'm just asking because I also bought (some fairly expensive) apps on Marketplace. What happens if they suddenly jump ship?

I guess we're pretty much screwed once it happens...I managed to get my money back for some Android apps when their devs stopped supporting them, but I don't know anything about WP, I'm afraid we won't be as lucky here...

This really is a huge issue isn't it?
With Apple and Android, once you buy an app you can then back it up to your PC. You "own" that local copy and can use it forever. With WP7 if a developer pulls an app, it's gone permanently if you ever uninstall or reset your phone.
Also this has happened quite a few times with a few different developers. I'm curious as to why they don't just leave it up and available to download, even if it's now unsupported? I can only presume that it's not making enough $$$ cover the annual developer subscription fee, which is weird; he only need to sell roughly 75 copies *yearly* at $1.99 to turn a profit.
Yeah, I thought that with the official Zune software from Microsoft, you can back-up your apps ala iTunes (with iOS apps). I'm using Windows Phone Connector for Mac and it doesn't really make back-ups. Can't we use Skydrive to make back-ups? Finally, we have the purchase history tab on windowsphone.com right? Then we have the option to reinstall an app via that website - I haven't tried it yet though so I cannot really say whether it works or not.
But Microsoft really has to address this issue - otherwise users might feel a bit cheated (even if its only for $0.99)

I tried the windowsphone.com method but it only works if the app is still on the Marketplace. It's not even a backup, it's more like a remote access to the Marketplace with the history of your downloads. I really hope Microsoft will offer better app backup solutions in the future, right now I must admit the situation flat out sucks.
I even tried to restore a Zune backup in order to go back at the time when the app was still installed the other day, but apparently it failed because once the phone rebooted nothing had changed. Wtf? Now even Zune starts acting up?

Nope. You can make a backup of a system image, but by restoring you lose all your currect settings, newly installed apps and it can't be restored to a new phone.
Skydrive does not offer backups unfortunately.

It appears they have; in WP8 you can back up everything to Skydrive, including what appears to be apps. Unfortunately WP7 is now end of life, so unlikely it will ever be fixed for current users.
Sucks, i thought it had dissapeard after flashing 7.8 but i see its not.
