ADB is used to connect to android devices. So unless you have another android plugged to your P930, running adb on the phone is pointless
hey thanks.
i guess i am way off track, i want to restore the phone's original recovery image (at some point in the future) and am tired of dealing with adb/windows on my PCs.
i was under the impression this could be done via terminal emulator/adb.

Well... yes, you need adb to connect to the phone, but terminal emulator is already running on the phone.
i see, well, i was hoping to be able to temporarily go back to the stock recovery to do OTA updates and such, it appears it won't be as cut&dry as i was hoping. i assumed that since adb is installed and running on the device via terminal emulator that it could be used to push/pull the stock recovery image onto the phone.

You're still not getting it: The only purpose of "adb shell" is to connect you to the phone; terminal emulator is a direct shell already on the phone.
i simply want to flash the original recovery image to the phone without using a PC.
it was my understanding that this is possible via terminal emulator, does anyone know if this is possible and if so, could you point me in the right direction to learn how to do that?
thanks!

Just use Terminal emulator in your phone and add manually the following commands to flash original images (put them on sd-card before):
Code:
su
dd if=/sdcard/boot.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p8
dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p13
dd if=/sdcard/firmware.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p1
dd if=/sdcard/baseband.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p14
dd if=/sdcard/system.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p27
super, thank you Machzelet!
i will give that a whirl this weekend.
here's how i think it will go
images to sd card
restore backed up original rom va rom manager
open up terminal emulator, run the commands above
reboot
update with OTA update
easy breezy?
Why would you even bother updating? The changes in the OTA update will eventually appear in custom ROMs anyway.
do i rly need to provide a reason for wanting to fiddle around with my phone? on a dev board? lolz

Sorry if this is a repost. But hopefully someone can help me out. I'm fully rooted, full nandroid unlock.full 100 yeards. Now this morning I was going to do the process for "Permanently replacing your recovery with ClockworkMod Recovery Image"
But for some strange reason, ADB doesn't see my Evo. I tried running "Command prompt" as administrator also and it wasa no go. I typed "adb devices" and my device wasn't listed like it was yesterday before I did a full nandroid Unlock.
Do anyone have any tips on how I can resolve this issue?
If this helps, I running the Bugless Beast Rom.
Thanks
You might have forgotten a step or two.
Open cmd
Type cd c:\android-sdk-windows\tools\ or wherever your sdk tools folder is.
Then it should work.
thanks. I'll give that a try and reply back
Strange thing....before I rooted/flashed a rom I created a Nandroid backup (I think it was stock. It doesn't have Superuser Permission in my list of Apps). Well I reverted back to that nandroid backup and now ADB sees my Evo.
I will flash back to my previous rom and trywhat you posted. Hopefully tat'll work

Yeah, I tried what you suggested and itstill didn't see my Evo. I guess my only option is to revert back, then do the process.
Sometimes you need to restart the adb server. Try the following:
Code:
adb kill-server
adb shell
If you get a '#' then you're in.
I'm having same issues and it's not working. My device is not being seen. Do you I have to have the Evo in charging mode or Disk Mode?

or, you could just try

then check with

seriously though, you may have put on a bad image. did you check the md5 hash? if not, do. there are threads around here on how to do that, if you are using windows. i don't have the link, because linux just has a command for it.
Try doing:
killall adb
sudo -s
adb devices
You must run adb as root on ur pc

What do you mean that I must run adb as root on my pc, i don't know what that mean. Do you mean run it by using the "Command prompt" program?
Also this only happens to me on the Bugless Beast Roms. When I revert back to my 1st nandroid backup that I was using before I flashed any rom, everything worked fine.

Thanks ...that fixed it! I enabled it typed "adb devices" and it showed up. thanks again!
No problem, glad you got it working! When I first started out I ran in to that trap over-and-over. Now I just make it a rule of thumb to turn it on after flashing and leave it on.
Have fun!
I would have started another thread, but this is basically a similar problem to the one I had at first with adb.
Ok...I was trying to install a rosie.apk that was in a zip format. Long story short, the OP informed me that he made a mistake and provided me the wrong information as to reinstalling the rosie.apk. He was giving me steps to "push it" via adb, instead of flashing it.
No problem to Poster and thanks for help if you reading this . But anyways after all that, When I open up "Cmd" and type anything with adb in front of it...adb devices, adb shell..., i get the message that adb is not recognized as a internal or external command. Before this incident happened i was able to just type "adb devices" and my Evo would show.
Do anyone know how to fix this?
By the way I also tried typing all the commands in the previous posts...and I get the same error message.
**Update** I got it working I had to redo the path. All is good now.
Thanks much!
You need to be in the tools directory of the sdk so cmd can find the adb command.
ADB is not friendly to me. I was able to root my g1 with pure ease. I cant get started with adb, I dont know why I cant get $, I've read several guides and I'm just about to give up. I'm running 2.2 on my g2.
I do have a couple of questions:
Are rooting with rage or visionary 14 the only way to root?
Are there any root guides out there that dont require ADB?
ADB is a ****ing pain in the ass to me, especially since I've tried everything and cant get it to work. Also, the drivers that go on Win7 64bit just dont work.
Also when I do have root, can I get android updates?
Any help would be thankfully appreciated. Sorry if I'm a pain in the ass, but I'd like to know if there is an easier way.
I think you need the q&a section

If you can't figure out adb, you definitely shouldn't be rooting your phone.
Some ROMS disable OTA notifications while others allow it. However, so long as you have a custom recovery, even if you get the notification and download it, you wont be able to flash it.

while my knowledge of adb isnt stellar, I have run into problems using it. I'm going to try this new link to the guide and see if it works.
Still if anyone knows other solutions, chime in.
Try the guide linked above. The drivers in the HTC Sync package (see the guide) definitely do work on Win 7 64-bit.
Clicked on SDK Manager.exe and it gave me the attached message; anti-virus is off and bare ass minimum services are running and I added the line in variables.
Any ideas?

Did you definitely add it to your path as it is suggesting in that window ? If so, I think you may need to reboot to pick that change up.
I did that just in case.
Actually, that path field was empty. So, I added it as is.
look up droid explorer
I made some leeway:
C:\Program Files (x86)\android-sdk-windows\tools>adb shell
$
$ adb push su /sdcard/su
$ adb push su /sdcard/su
$ adb: permission denied
good grief!!!!!!!
I've completely removed visionary before starting this procedure. Did I need temproot before attempting this?
Downloading and installing Droid Explorer. Thanks!
Also, I'm using this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834228
No matter what I've done, permission denied.
The steps you are trying are actually to get temproot (it's an alternate method to Visionary), so you don't need to already be temprooted.
You don't want to run "adb push" commands after you have run "adb shell". ADB commands will no longer work until you exit the shell (simply type exit and hit enter---you'll notice your command prompt will change back to normal). If you are following the guide you linked to, you'll notice adb shell is not run prior to running the first push command.

^^^^ what he said.
You are trying to run adb on your phone there, which isn't right. That's your phone's command prompt, the "$". "adb" is something totally different on your phone. You need to run the adb commands on your PC. That's why "adb shell" worked (because you ran it on your PC), then "adb push" didn't (because you tried to run it on your phone).

"permission denied" is a message from your phone, not your PC.
The $ prompt that you copied and pasted up shows that you were running the commands on your phone. As soon as you do "adb shell", then any commands you are entering after that are going on your phone, even though they're physically being typed on your PC - because your PC has started a command prompt on your phone, as shown by the $ prompt.

Basically, don't start by typing adb shell. The instructions you are trying to follow don't even say to do that anywhere. I highly recommend you reread the instructions very carefully and follow them exactly. Rooting this phone is actually pretty simple if you just do exactly as the guide states. If you don't know what you are doing and mistype something in some of the later steps though, you can seriously screw up your phone...
I think part of the confusion is that the commands listed on the guide all have "$" at the beginning of them, probably because whoever wrote that was using a Linux PC or maybe a Mac. You are actually executing these commands from your Windows command shell so they will look more like:
D:\Android SDK\platform-tools>adb push su /sdcard/su
Click to collapse
(depending on where you have the SDK installed)
instead of:
$ adb push su /sdcard/su
Click to collapse
but of course you only need to type:
adb push su /sdcard/su
Click to collapse
Again these are typed from your windows command shell.
How do you gain temporary nand unlock? All i wanted to do is copy 2 files into the /system/xbin/bb which doesnt seem to work with root explorer despite super user permission, copy paste just wont work.
Any ideas how to copy paste these 2 files without going to full s-off? Would the adb method work? or any other apk that can do the job?
Thanks in advance for those who can help and any tips is very much appreciated.

any links to it? a guide perhaps? thanks for the tip.
Make a nandroid before messing with the system partition.
Then:
Code:
adb remount
adb push <file_name> /system/xbin/bb
This is what i think it is just looking at the basic adb commands, here is some more info about moving stuff to the system partition.

You do know that adb is part of the android sdk and not some function/app on the phone?
To get adb working (i hope you already installed it) just boot in to recovery, connect the usb cable, and launch adb via command prompt or terminal.

Ok I did my best, read alot about adb and followed some tips but I just cant seem to get these things working. I need a DETAILED step by step procedure.
I feel such a noob today, can anyone please help?
Basically, I just wanted to copy "ifconfig" and "route" from "/system/xbin" to "system/xbin/bb" and thats it! Im s-on by the way and dont want a full s-off just to copy paste 2 files.
I tried rebooting in recovery with adb and run some commands on "adb shell", many things came out and I have no idea what it ment.
Well many things came out is not such a great description. So i have no idea if something is wrong or something happened which you did not expect.
Boot again in to recovery and connect adb.
The type "adb devices" this should output something like:
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *
List of devices attached
HT##########
If this does not happen you don't have a connection and most likely have driver issues (only if you are on windows). If you do get a connection next thing to do is mount the system partition as read/write. To do this type "adb remount".
The output should be "remount succeeded"
Next type "adb shell"
This should give "#" as output .
Since you know where the files are and where you want them to go type "mv /system/xbin/ifconfig /system/xbin/bb" and hit enter, you don't get any conformation about this. Next type "mv /system/xbin/route /system/xbin/bb"
To check if they go moved correctly type " ls /system/xbin/bb", now you should see the files listed.
Next type "exit" to end the adb shell.
Then type "adb reboot".
If this doesn't work you need to give more info about the errors you get or maybe someone else has a better description.
A completly other method is, if you are able to copy the files to your computer, useing the .zip mercianary linked to, just make sure the system/app folder is empty and that you make the system/xbin/bb folder and place the files in there. Then just follow the instructions.

how can i flash my radio.img... HELP
Put the image in your adb fastboot on your computer where you have adb set up. Connect phone to computer. Open command window and type: adb reboot bootloader / fastboot flash radio Name_Of_File_.img then reboot phone.
For the love of god, stop making new threads.
I already told you to stop doing this. You already have 3 (now 4) threads all related to the same original issue. Should have all been discussed in one thread.
I was already helping you in another thread(s). I suggested running Asia or Euro RUUs. You never responded if that worked or not.
You should not be messing with the radio using adb commands (as its clear form past communications that you don't have the proper knowledge to do so). This is really dangerous, and can easily damage the phone permanently. Depending on what radio you flashed (that "didn't work) you may already have.
I've already advised the safest way to change the radio.
OK, I had my kindle running cyanogenmod 11. I was having problems with some apps running on it, root was acting weird. Root checkers said it was rooted, but some apps that required root weren't installing right.
Fast forward, I thought perhaps I needed to flash the new version. I got into recovery to run it and flash it and this is the error I have.
So all the forums said, just wipe it then it will work. Of course now I have no OS on the thing. TWRP is fine, but I can't use the tablet.
So some other forums suggested it's either a mounting to E:\ problem or a rooting problems. I can get in to ADB, I've pushed many different roms over and they all have similar errors.
All of the Root tools I can find require you to come in the front door. TWRP fails when it goes to 'fix permission' and every time I reboot says , 'root is gone, swipe to fix' but it's not seeming to stick.
Any ideas on how to make sure I can mount the new rom and get this back up and running.
As I said, I've tried many roms, directly downloaded from CM website: Download:
cm-12.1-20160129-NIGHTLY-d2tmo.zip (284.96 MB)

I'm running TWRP 2.6.0.0 and have a binary ADB driver of 1.0.31. I can ping 4.2.2.2 so I'm pretty sure since the issue is coming from the device itself, and the way it's erroring reminds me of other permission problems I've seen in other devices that it's a root issue.
Is there a simple command line ADB tool or something that I can use to validate/set root?
Thanks!

HI! thanks for that advice. I wish I could. I've tried several methods, and although I can get into ADB shell, I can't access su:
besides kindle fire first aide and other batch files, I found some manual instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2277105
Here's what it tells me to do (among many other things): I realize this is just backing up stuff that doesn't exist etc, but it's indicative of the problems without having su.
adb shell su -c "dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0boot0 of=/sdcard/boot0block.img"
adb shell su -c "dd if=/dev/block/platform/omap/omap_hsmmc.1/by-name/boot of=/sdcard/stock-boot.img"
adb shell su -c "dd if=/dev/block/platform/omap/omap_hsmmc.1/by-name/recovery of=/sdcard/stock-recovery.img"
adb shell su -c "dd if=/dev/block/platform/omap/omap_hsmmc.1/by-name/system of=/sdcard/stock-system.img"
mkdir C:\KFHD8Backup
adb pull /sdcard/stock-boot.img/ [C:\KFHD8Backup]
adb pull /sdcard/stock-recovery.img/ [C:\KFHD8Backup]
adb pull /sdcard/stock-system.img/ [C:\KFHD8Backup]
but if I go into adb shell and type any commands, like just simple su:
I get /sbin/sh: su: not found
when I do whoami: I get root
but I get a funky prompt:
~#^[[61;5R
instead of a normal # root prompt.
So I'm kind of stuck because I can't really do anything without the su, and it says I'm root. So can I adb push over the files and mount the right drives or whatever to get it to recognize su. At that point I can install twrp, but i'm sure at that point my existing twrp will work too!
I can't seem to get it into fastboot mode either. When I adb devices it says I'm in recovery, not device and in TWRP it says no OS installed. So my only functioning loader is TWRP. (or however you put that more accurately).
I feel like with adb push working, I should be able to do something to get this back, but all the tools expect you to just push a button, not do it the hard way.
So long story short, if you can point me to a thread that tells me how to update TWRP or how to push SU over with ADB or anything that would be awesome. I"m not a complete turd at this, but I think I broke it using something like kingoroot instead of just using the bin4ry while I still had the cyanogenmod working somewhat. So I'm thinking that's why i got the funky prompt, and that's why my su is gone from where it should be.
