Ok guys this is the first phone since the OG google nexus that has totally blown me away. This thing is gorgeous and feels great in hand. But ofcourse like with every new purchase I first start to look for any imperfection/defects. So now here is where I need the help of my XDA friends. As I press along the side of the phone where the buttons a located, specifically in between the power button and camera shutter that portion of the phone actually can be pushed in. It sort of feels as if there is a slight give between the lcd and the body in that area. I tried pressing down on the oppositte side of the phone where no buttons are located and there is no give. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks!
Also, the capacitive buttons are a dull off white color. Is that normal?
Mine does not give at all. If it does I suppose I would have to squeeze it like crazy. The build quality compared to pretty much everything else is vastly superior.

The buttons are indeed off white in color. I didn't notice this at first, the samsung buttons lit up.
I cannot find that squishy spot you speak of. Holding it in my hands right now...can't feel what you're feeling.
Yeah I feel it. I'll probably go into a story on Monday to confirm and maybe swap it out. Thanks!

No Give whatsoever on mine. Pushing on the screen there, it gives ever so slightly, but not pushing on the side. But I have to push more than normal to get the screen to move at all. Likely, it's a soft spot in the plastic?
Awesome phone live it...main complaint is that sim card slot looks very brittle and the top looks already bent. Other than that this is the first windows phone I think I will keep it for some time.

Are you guys gonna be any screen protectors (Zagg or someting like that) or a gel case or bumper to protect it further? I also saw the Case-Mate Pop Case which has a kickstand built-in that is kind of cool to have.
I think I will be doing injustice if I use any case with this beautiful hardware. I will go bare with no screen protector and case.

Alright guys well I've just been through hell with att yet again. I went to my local corporate store and confirmed that my device is defective. The plastic located just between the camera button and power flexes inward and makes a noticeable clicking noise. The rep told me that they have the phones in stock but cannot exchange mine until Monday. Well I found that to be unacceptable and asked to speak to the manager. The manager approaches me half listens to my situation and midway through my story he interrupts and says he will not exchange the defective item. As you can imagine iam livid. I go back to my car and call customer service. After being on the phone for 30 minutes and explaining my situation yet again, the rep agrees that they should exchange the device. She asks me to walk in and put the manager on the phone. I do as she asks and allow this situation to go on. After another 20 minutes the manager wouldn't budge. All in all iam stuck with a defective device until Monday and $75 in courtesy credits. Imbisels, when will they learn its not about the money its about the customer service. $75 in credits as opposed to an exchange? Really? I wish nokia would have launched an unlocked device side by side. I would pay $100 extra not to deal with this carrier crap anymore. Thanks for listening to my rant people.

wow, that is complete crap. did they even give you a reason not to exchange? too bad they didnt release this on tmobile. im sure they will make a unlocked version sometime which is what im probably going to buy
I don't think the store is the issue. Its at&t corporate. They have said, sell the device early, you are terminated. One of the reps told me they have been warned, any scanning of and in store device means their job.
I took my device in yesterday to change out the sim. Before the guy could help me he had to call and get permission. Because I preordered in that store, I was in the records, they could help. I went in today to port another line over . The rep was telling me how paranoid everyone was about even touching this phone until Monday.
Freaky. I wouldn't blame the manager. Any chance to try another store, though I expect the results will be the same.
They can't sell the phone until launch day in the sales system is all. It won't even populate a price until then. They will swap it out for you and it's not like the phone is unusable. Most preorder phones don't show up until launch day so it's an issue that doesn't normally come up.

I the end of the day sure it's just a phone. Life goes on, I have my health my family and a cell phone to make calls, lol...ok ok. But when your a stock holder in a company, you've invested time and money into a product since its inception and these are the results you see time and time again, it is very disappointing. I want to see the product succeed. But unfortunately, I feel as if at&t will be the reason why it might not. That's my biggest problem. I can wait til Monday no problem, your right. But I've been waiting since October 2010. This frustration comes from someone that believed in a product when everyone else said no.

Corporations create policies and procedures to make sure things work smoothly for everyone. You are asking AT&T to break rank & order to do something for you. If they did that for everyone there would chaos. Monday sounds very reasonable to me.

I bought this case on 11/28/2011.
Its around 4 months and look at the picture what happened to my case.
I have not even dropped it once.
I just took out the phone few time out of the case to pull the battery (hard reset)
Anyone knows if I can claim the warranty? bought it from ebay (US seller)
thanks,

i have heard of people having success going directly to tmobil stores and speaking with customer service.
sometimes customer service will replace the case on the spot. even if you paid cash and dont have a receipt, there maybe a record of your purchase in their computer (if they asked for your phone number.)

Thanks but I bought it from ebay
I'd say just go up to T-Mobile and exchange it. They wont lose any money since its a defect. I am going to return mine due to the echo it produces on my phone and the gfs too.
I was getting off the greyhound and I dropped my phone... so after I got off the bus I went directly to the T-Mobile store and they replaced the phone and I bought this phone while I there... its pretty good... at first it was kinda hard pressing the power button but it got easier.
Its a lifetime warranty
I would give it a exchange try at a T-Mobile store myself.
I have the white and black one. Its starting to crack down the back from where the charger port is. I am going to check out the tmobile store. I forgot my receipt but Ill let you know how my visit goes.
The store rep said there was only a 30 day warranty on this case i bought mine in november as well.
Thanks for checking it out, I have to go 10 miles to check that out by myself.
My question specifically was to claim warranty from the manufacturer.
Let me know if you can findout where to go claim the warranty..
Horrible Case - Caused physical damage to my phone
I bought the T-Mobile Galaxy S2 right when it came out and purchased the case shortly after - around October, 2011. It's been on almost the entire time and I recently have pulled it off and noticed that the Power/Lock button is now depressed more than it should be. This is due to the stiff power button on the case keeping it pressed in too far.
T-Mobile see's this as physical damage to the phone and it took me 2 visits to a T-Mobile store and 3 calls to Tech support before they FINALLY warranty repaired it, due to the fact that this is an exclusive case sold by T-Mobile and not a 3rd party.
Now I'm looking for a better case to use when I get the replacement. Anybody happy with other cases? I'd prefer something not super thick.
Anyway, just a heads up - I'd stop using this case.
I love my D3O. Never had any problems.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA
Weird!
I have a D30 case, and I take it on/off daily. I only wear it for work, then take it off throughout the day. Do this everyday and my case is still like new! (The buttons started to soften up too)
I'd say take it to T-Mobile store and talk to them about it. They always fix my problems in-stores, maybe cause I've been with them since 2000.
So I received my phone yesterday straight from the Play Store. I started to use the Toolkit and everything went smoothly. I even put an XO screen protector on it.
Then this morning I noticed it. There's a marking on the bottom left corner of the side of phone. It's looks like a laser marking similar to those found on sheet metal. It doesn't affect the functionality of the phone but if I'm paying 400 for a phone I expect it to be in top notch condition. This could also affect the resale value of the phone. So I got in touch with Google. I was hoping to get some sort of credit (Google Wallet, perhaps), but the representative wasn't unable to do that and connected me with Samsung instead. They're going to send me a replacement phone and put a hold on my credit card while I ship this one back and they'll inspect it. I hope return process turns out okay. I've already removed the screen protector and flashed it back to stock.
I returned two phones with faulty screens(one had a whole column of pixels die day 3) but I would've kept them if that little mark was the only problem.
Slap a case on it and you'd never know it's there, though as it is it's not a bad little birthmark anyway. I doubt that very slight defect will effect its resale value very much. The perpetual deluge of new phones coming out will be doing that.
In my personal opinion, if that was the only thing wrong with the phone I would keep it, especially when a lot of warranty returns result in refurbs (not certain if that is the case with the Play Store). In fact, to me that would be like a birth mark and add character to the phone. To me it actually looks kinda cool, but that's just me.
It's like a sexy birthmark on a beautiful woman. Or freckles. Don't know why those things bother some people.
I have a mark in the exact same spot only its a straight line not an "s"
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Xparent ICS Blue Tapatalk 2
I personally wouldnt return it for that as long as it was working perfectly. The replacement might act up, you never know.
Mmmm... Samsung's RMA department still hasn't contacted me yet to get my credit card info. I'll ask if the replacement is refurbished. I'll keep the phone if it is.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA
Yeah, you have a chance of getting a replacement with a bad screen, bootloops, broken usb port, or other issues, which is way worse than that mark.
Still, you're entitled to a replacement if you're not satisfied. Hope you get a good one.

Not really high. One percent of a million phones shipped is still 10,000 units that slipped through quality control.
It's just that as soon as someone comes across an issue, they immediately post it here (like you did). So we pretty much know ALL the problems this phone might encounter.
yea if the phone is perfect hardware wise i'd definitely keep it. they will most likely send you a refurb. you're going to regret it if you get a phone with a bad screen.
you're going to put a case on it anyway right? and if you don't you're going to get cosmetic defects from scratches anyway

I guess I shouldn't have a right to complain because I paid 300 less than you. You can afford to buy a phone at 700, I don't. I'm sorry the price dropped after you bought the phone, but that is the cost of early adoption.

You still don't get what i am saying. Dude, you got a great price for a badass phone and there is a small cosmetic defect. Be happy with it if the internals are good. You could do worse and just get your nose caught higher up in the air. My sister piad for $400 for hers and she has a purplish screen. I haven't mentioned anything to her and she has been more than happy and glad she spent the $400. I am going to tell her in a couple weeks and show her my screen. My sister is pickier than me but i doubt it will bother her after she knows. If it does i will trade with her. Purple screen and all. It's a phone. Nit life or death and that scratch isnt going to ruin your life. Just your demeanor.

I've already acknowledged that my issue is extremely minor compared to others and I've already contacted Samsung to cancel the RMA because I don't want a refurbished phone. Regardless of what the issue I had with the phone, you make it seem like I have less of right to complain because I paid less for the same phone.

u're not getting his point
anyways, if u buy something, even if it costs 10$, it should be as described and without any defects (whether purple-ish screens or like the one OP got). he paid for something according to a description, and when it arrived it didn't meet the descriptoin they advertise it upon. he has the right to get a replacement, and not a refurb, but a brand new device.
This thread is intended to discuss your experience with your refurbished Galaxy Note 2 from AT&T so others can decide if a refurbished device is the right choice for them. If you want to rate the quality of your device on a scale of 1-10 I will keep the OP updated with the average rating. I for one was somewhat skeptical about ordering a refurbished device but I took the plunge after reading another members good experience and so far I have had no regrets. Please follow XDA rules and have fun.
That being said I would rate the quality of my device as a 10 . I ordered the white model and I have not been able to find any flaws ( and I am anal about little things ) I had a very bad experience with AT&T when I had the HTC one X , They sent me 3 refurb's in one week and all of them had issues. I am very happy so far with my Refurbished Galaxy Note 2 and I have the insurance just in case something goes wrong after the 90 days.
I did run into the loose charging port that I read about in these forums and discovered it to be the actual cable , not the phone. my solution was to file down the upper part of the housing and now the charging usb actually clicks into place. Also this aftermarket usb cable from radio shack fits perfect. see attached image.
Average user rating 8.7

I had a refurbished Samsung replaced under warranty since my camera focus quit working**....it was basically flawless and in perfect condition. :good:
**Wasn't till later that I realized that my phone mounted on a motorcycle handlebar for a 2,900 miles trip might have contributed to the problem (i.e. vibration)?? Wasn't sure but makes sense. Anyway it quit working so I got a refurbished one which I still use on my motorcycle.
Haven't had a refurb note2 but my original note was replaced under warranty with a refurb and the first replacement had scratches on the camera lens, called at&t and told them that was unacceptable as I'm anal about my phone, most people probably wouldn't have even cared, they said no problem and sent me a new one.

Same here. Replaced the wife's 3gs with one.
Back is not hard to remove but doesn't seem it will fall of at all.
Some other things that I'd Ike to know if normal or not:
- very low call volume (still have to play with this more)
- beeps continuously while charging with my nexus one 1A (or less, don't remember) charger.
- &#%$&#%&$&#% lots and lots of AT&T crap ware. It kept trying to make me type my Gmail passwd on a att.com page during setup... riiight. Now every time I press contacts tab on phone app it shows a dialog about downloading contacts from att for a few seconds.
...will I be fine if I flash cyanogen or something else on it?

I don't recall any of that happening to me, however you should be able to install some aftermarket firmware after rooting and installing a recovery using Odin or Heimdall (depending on your OS)
However if you still have the low call volume and whatnot, I'd say completely revert back to stock and return it. AT&T will give you a brand new one at no extra cost if they deem it unworthy xD

Same for me(received my unit yesterday, (upgrading from a root and modded Skyrocket) excellent looking unit, battery was dead, no headphones... battery charged very quickly, much quicker than I expected... visually the phone itself is perfect, LOVE it.
What an incredible deal even with the specs of the IV that have been revealed over the last few days I feel VERY happy with this purchase, can't touch this battery life and screen size!
I've not received a Note 2 refurb, but for other's that I have; e.g. Skyrocket, S3, etc I only received the phone housing, never any other accessories such as battery, back plate, etc as I've always been told to keep those from the original.
Is the Note 2 different in that AT&T now provides those additional with a refurb replacement? Seems a bit odd they'd go through this trouble considering that would more than likely not have anything to do with the phone HW which is being addressed under warranty.
EDIT: Ah.... ok I mis-read this as I was under the impression this was in regards to warranty replacement... disregard.

I just wanted to say that if anyone wants a case with a kickstand, this is the case I got today from Best Buy, as they were out of cases at the AT&T store. I do quite like it (even though I probably won't be using it for its kickstand), but it is pretty thin and seems pretty durable for its thinness. It basically seperates into two by pushing on a specific area on the back and that way only (I tried prying it open via the sides for testing purposes and it wasn't budging). The kick stand is also magnetic and it works just fine on let's say, a table or other hard surface...
So yeah. Just thought I'd put it out there for anyone who needs a thin case and no I wasn't paid to post this xD
EDIT: I also have a question. I'm currently on the DataPro 4G 3Gig plan, but need to upgrade to the corresponding LTE plan. Will AT&T upgrade me to the 3Gig LTE plan (that's the same price) automatically or will they bump me down to a 300megabyte plan? Because I'm too lazy to call them oops.

Received my Note II (both of them) also .. visually a 10, functionality a 10 .. both phones are flawless. Was surprised however that both phone came with 4.1.1 on them .. being refurbished, I would had expected AT&T upgraded them to current before shipping .. but then again, that helped me .. LOL .. both phones UNLOCKED before upgrading
The two we got are in really good shape, except I can't get them to use the home wireless -- which is supplied by AT&T ironically enough. They both keep saying "authentication error". We have tested them outside the home and Wifi works fine there, so they just won't work at home.
Regardless, the recipients are no longer jealous of my Note 2, which I bought on (AT&T) launch day.

LOL .. both phones UNLOCKED before upgrading

I got a new S3 from USA AT&T today, bought a Zagg screen protector and when I got home applied correctly according to directions making sure to be extremely careful. (AT&T store didn't have them in stock to give and apply for me)
I booted up my device after applying the shield and now I get insane flickering even with power saving mode and auto brightness turned off, touch buttons are not functioning now, and I believe the water strips went off, I Know I didn't use more than the suggested amount for applying the screen protector and I'm super sad, because I don't have insurance, I bought the phone today, if there a chance that AT&T will honor the exchange? Phone, SIM and battery are in a bowl of rice as we speak.

There is always a chance. If younfind a sympathetic rep. There are ways to make it look fine but you have to Google that.

Okay so, after a few hours in the rice the screen is fully functional, but now the capacitive buttons don't work. What can I do? I'll leave it in the rice still overnight to see what happens next if anything. I'd love to wake up to a few answers if possible, thank you!

Without saying it is ethical to do so if your phone is already broken, don't you usually have like 7 days to buy insurance after buying a new phone?

30 days with AT&T, but I would also have to basically repay for the phone with a $200 non-refundable deductible.
I checked again this morning and the water damage indicators are both completely white, I was looking at the wrong area. I'll just go get it replaced soon.

just to note: a lot of the big retailers that sell these nice screen protectors will also install them for you if you ask (or for a small fee). i've seen this done at places like sams and best buy. it gets done right (no bubbles) and takes the kind of crap you've been dealing with off your shoulders. good luck and cheers

All-hail the magical rice! Everything is working perfectly now
First things first i'm glad to say that i'm a new Note 4 owner and god it feels good to be back (came from a iPhone 6+ and a G3 before that). So today i went to a local AT&T corporate store wanting to get the black Note 4 on the AT&T next plan. To my dismay they only had the white ones in stock and after having two white phones i wanted something else. I got the phone and i knew it was love at first sight. About 30 minutes after leaving the store i noticed at the very bottom of the screen there was a gap that stuck out like a sore thumb (bottom left). Being an expensive device i was unhappy so i decided to take it back to see if they could exchange it.
Long story short they acknowledged that there was a gap however they said that "all of their batches" had this problem and when i asked if they could bring one out to show me they quickly denied my request and told me to try a different store and that if i wanted to return it i could, but would be charged a $35.00 restocking fee I left the store infuriated and called AT&T directly and told them what was on my mind. Luckily the representative was VERY understanding and very nice her manager was also standing behind her and also agreed it was outrageous that they tried to charge me a restocking fee considering i just bought the phone less than an hour ago and that they would credit me $35.00 to my account in case i got charged.
I went to a second AT&T store and they weren't helpful either but at least they brought out two other devices showing me that there were gaps (not noticeable like mine though) the AT&T representative stayed on the phone the whole time listening to my conversation with the store manager and representative. She was nice enough to let the store know that her and her manager were standing by my side and that they wanted me to be happy with my purchase. At that point i decided that i wanted a black Note 4 considering it hides everything better. Unfortunately they didn't have any and i was referred to a 3rd store. Luckily that store had 1 left and the guy who helped me understood and saw the gap and exchanged it out for me within seconds!
Happy to hear you eventually got everything sorted. It's unfortunate that AT&T stores vary so much from each other, let alone have different decisions from the "big guys" over the phone. Has a similar issue with my Note 3. I simply believe they choose to go this route with deflecting problems and telling you you have to pay a fee because they know people will fall for it. Glad you got it worked out, and the exact phone you wanted!! The black looks much better in person to me anyways.
I hadn't noticed the gap at the bottom on my white Note until reading your post lol. Still doesn't bother me but glad you got yours resolved. I was considering getting rid of the white at first because the back was noticeably more slippery than that in the black. I almost wonder if it was worse than the Note 3's difference in texture. But then I had the bright idea to see what it looks like with the grayish flip cover and man there's something gorgeous about the white contrast in between the grey covers. Either way, awesome devices.

i dont have any gaps on mine. I guess i'm lucky? When I got the phone, i looked at the gaps and actually said to myself "this is what people were complaining about"?

i dont have a pic because my device is fine (there might be pics online) but basically, the gap between the screen and the frame around the edge was large for some people to handle.

Now that you mention it, I kind of see it but nothing that warrants a replacement. thanks
Sorry to hear about your bad experience.
I just had a great experience at the AT&T store.
The sales consultant who helped me was courteous and knowledgeable.
Just happy that I was able to pick one Note 4 unit up today after being disappointed yesterday at the BestBuy as my preorder unit wasn't available. I also got $100 credit for turning an old iPhone 4 in for a trade up deal.
What a great phone!
This entire thread is stupid because there is no such thing as a "gapgate" issue. (1) YES, there is a slight, minuscule gap found on ALL Samsung Note devices. (2) This is BY DESIGN and intended. (3) ALL Note's have featured this purposefully-made gap, since the Note 2, and it is detailed in the OWNER'S MANUAL of the Note 2, Note 3, and now Note 4. (4) No one paid the gap any attention since it's barely noticeable, until the CrApple bendgate scandal came into play. Magically, CrApple aficionados tried to find something to fault Samsung/the Note on, and somewhere they found that tiny gap. (5) The gap is NEEDED so that when the phone heats up and the glass naturally expands, it can do so without any harm. Without the gap, the glass will expand and CRACK. Also, the gap is needed to prevent damage when the phone is dropped. If the glass was welded to the side of the phone (almost impossible) the glass will almost certainly shatter when you drop it. Samsung has stated in the manual, that the gap can be more noticeable on certain side of the phone (varies by device), and on some phones it's not even noticeable. Enjoy your phones and stop obsessing over something so asinine and trivial.

there are no gaps on mine either. not sure what these guys are seeing.
This for the most part is hogwash! If everyone stops to read the manual it actually points out that this is by design. Case closed!
