So... my wife has been hating her Samsung Moment.
I have an EVO that I got on day one, but for some reason my account was tagged as eligible for an upgrade. This weekend, after chatting with sprint online who said I could get a new phone for my line, activate it, then switch it to her and switch back to my EVO.
So I bought her an Epic through Radioshack who was selling them cheap. It came in today, and says that they MAY charge me $300 if I switch the phone to another line after activating it, due to sprint reporting it as being deactivated.
Has anyone had any experience with this and Sprint before? I'd really rather not pay another $300, when I thought this wasn't going to be an issue.

Does that mean you have done what im trying to do and not had an issue?
Ie, buy a phone using one lines upgrade, activate, then transfer numbers back around?
To get the upgrade price, and/or the rebates, you need to keep it on the line for 30 days I believe. It may be 60 days, I'm not positive. But they do this for exactly this situation, so people cant use their update and immediately give it to another line.
Return the phone to RS so they can reverse your upgrade if you're worried about the fee. Call Sprint and see if they can give you a good price on the phone. You always have to read the fine print on those 3rd party vendors.
Never had issues like that. I have used my girls upgrade and activated the phone directly on to whatever line I wanted without ever having it on the eligable upgrade line. Done this several times, never a problem. Also, sometimes Sprint will do your mail in rebate for you instantly if you call in, as long as ur a premier member. Its nice not waiting for that check.
Hey... I think this thing makes phone calls too!

Through which vendor though, sprint directly? Or a reseller like Best Buy/Radioshack?

The first time, I ordered the phone from Sprint online with an upgrade from my fathers line, which I provide to him, and activated it on my line. That's the only way I was able to afford getting the Evo on launch.
Second time, I ordered an Evo from Wirefly using my upgrade and activated it on my girls line.
Third time, I ordered from Sprint online again for my friend who's on my family plan, and activated on his girls line. I have a maxed out family plan to save cash, communism rocks and so does unlimited mobile to mobile!
On all three of these, Sprint gave me zero trouble. On the two ordered directly from Sprint, they did my rebate instantly and applied the credit to my account. Also, on all three occasions I called Sprint directly to activate. I know you can do it online, but I find that you can get more out of it if you call in or go to the store. Case in point, instant rebate goodness.
Well, I did this same thing when I got the evo on launch day......used my wifes upgrade, from radioshack and within ten minutes of that purchase I switched the phone to my line and put wife blackberry back on her line, all while inside radioshack.....
hope this help.

I just did this, back when the evo came out, I used my wife's upgrade and transferred it to my line (done at the sprint store). In December, my line was eligible for an upgrade, so I used that upgrade to get my wife an evo (done at radio shack). They did all the switching right at the store. No problems and no extra charges.

I did the exact same thing as above but did it all at Wal-Mart as it was the only place around that had the phone in stock. I used my wifes upgrade to get the evo, and they switched the numbers around within 5 minutes.
Thanks for all the responses. I ended up getting scared of Radioshack online (Wirefly) and did it in store at a best buy, who did it all no problem.
did we receive any advance warning of this - and obviously I'm not talking about the leaked playbook stuff. I was told by a Sprint rep that a mailer was sent out on September 12 stating the change in the return policy. I received nothing. I was also told an email was sent out...again, I received nothing.
when I asked where it could be found, the rep I spoke to at account services told me to run a search for terms and conditions. after 10 minutes of searching that, which yielded nothing by the way, he then told me I had to run a search for return policy. his position was that Sprint provided advance notice to its customers by posting this info on the website.
I guess my question is that if we weren't told about it, how were we supposed to know?
What was the change? The wife n i just sent back a nexus so i could use her upgrade and save mine till November. We got an email saying that we didn't qualify to get the 36 bucks back, my issue is now are they gonna give us our upgrade back.

I'm curious about this as well. I've been going through a tough time with my wife's phone as well, regarding their 30-day policy. Returned phone one because it was defective. Returned phone 2 becuase wife didn't like it (didn't mind paying restocking fee or whatever because it wasn't defective) but they're saying the 30-day window still is based on the purchase date of phone one, not phone two.
as I understand it, any phones purchased subsequent to September 16 are governed by the new 14-day return policy. in addition to knocking 16 days off the return window, you can only return 1 device in that 14-day period. any additional attempts will result in a refusal. when I last inquired about the number of returns - and, admittedly, it was several years ago - Sprint allowed you 3. now it's 1.
so, the best advice for anyone would be to bring the phone back to a Sprint store rather than dealing with the mail (which would effectively knock your 14-day window down to about 7). when I challenged some of the account services personnel on this change, their defense was, "all the other carriers only allow 14 days." I'm sure we can expect a similar line of reasoning when our unlimited data gets cut, too.
Well I will shorten the story as to get to the point. When we were moving to a new house we wanted to transfer out AT&T service to the new address. During the conversation they tried to get us to add wireless. I was not that interested but the lady came up with about 625.00 worth of discounts including a 400.00 visa card. So we took the plunge and got a couple of Galaxy notes.
Then AT&T failed to show up for two appointments for the installation and caused me to miss 3 days of work. I decided to go with the local cable company instead and they were there the next day. So due to this our deal for the 625..00 discounts were no longer valid. So I knew we were going to have to return the phones (AT&T 30 days). So I ported my number back and only had 9 days of use, my wife canceled hers the day we returned them she had 16 days of use.
So I talked to AT&T and they said wait for the updated bill. Well the next bill came and it was not corrected and they still were charging us, plus one 325 ETF. So I contacted them and went to the store and made notes for them to correct my bill so I could pay it. I keep getting bills and messages stating past due and they are terminating service. More calls and they said they were assigning this to an investigation department and it should be cleared up in 7 days. Not so and I received a new bill today for almost 900..00. I was clearly furious and set my recorder to record the call.
On the phone and transferred one time I get to an agent. I made her aware of taping the conversation and that it would be used in court if necessary. I also warned that if my account was turned over to a collection agency they would be sued by my lawyer. After explanation I stated again I wanted my final bill so I could pay it and this was going to be my last time to call and ask.
She then had to talk to an ICU group and within 30 min I was told my account was settled with a 0.00 balance. I said you mean I don't owe anything? she said yes your balance is zero. She said sorry for all the trouble.
Bottom line while I'm happy of the outcome it just shows that these contracts are a nightmare to get out of at least mine was.
I hope others can relate to my experience.
Glad you got it figured out. I think it shows that they don't always intend to be as evil as it seems, it more than likely is a result of the left hand not talking to the right (or in the case of such a large company, none of the fingers talking to each other). It doesn't excuse their crazy conduct, but it helps make sense of it all.

So my brother needed a new phone badly and he went out and switched to sprint (from verizon) and got a galaxy s2 today. I know the galaxy s3 is coming out in 15 days.
Now as far as I see, Sprint has a 14 day return policy for the phones. Do you think there's any way he would be able to return the phone in 14 days and get the galaxy s3 the next day?
The tricky part is that he's switched from verizon, so if he returns the phone, I don't know if he can still keep the wireless plan or is eligible for a new phone. Does anyone have experience with what happens if you sign up for a new plan but then keep the plan and just return the phone? Are you still eligible for discounts on the phone then? I could give him an old touch pro 2 to keep the account active for a couple of days if needed.
Thanks for any tips.

Well the policy is 14 days. And the day he got it counts as day 1. And if you return it within the 3rd day they will credit back the activation fee. If you return after the 3rd day (4-14) they will stick you with the activation fee. Also if the reason that he is returning it is just because he wants the gs3 they might charge him with a $35 restocking fee. As soon as he returns the device the reset the upgrade .So my advice is to return asap if he is still within the 1-3 days. And the only way for him to keep his number and plan is to activate the extra TP2 that you said you have. Hopefully this helps

Hey!
I have some experience with this, and I can tell you (at least, again, from my experience) that Sprint will let you do something like that... if you switch the phone on the same day.
I think if you call in advance, maybe they'll make some leeway for you, or at least explain what you can do. But sorry, I don't know about whether or not you can return the phone and then wait, and pick it up.
However, for me, on the 13th day following my contract extension I was able to replace an Evo 3D for an E4GT, no problems at all.
Also... maybe you can exchange for a pre-order? That's just a thought...
Thanks for the replies so far. In all honestly, that Galaxy S 3 will be mine! lol. So if the upgrade gets reset I can have him activate my old palm treo or the touch pro 2 and then once he gets the galaxy S 3 I'll just pay him the 35 bucks if need be. He will then get my galaxy S2, so nothing lost on his end.
why didn't he just go to walmart and get a cheap pay-as-you-go phone for $40 to tie him over until the s3 is available? would've been cheaper than the mess he got himself into.

He needs the phone for business and he was actually just planning on keeping the Galaxy S2. So it's technically me making things complicated because I think the upgrade is going to waste getting an S2 instead of S3.
You can do it. The thing is you or him needs to exchange one device for the other at the moment in the grace period. But not return it and stay without a phone till SGSIII arrive. Good luck.

Wait so this thread is about you wanting an s3 and talking your brother who had to have a phone and got one he probably likes since the s2 is one of the best phones ever made(imho) and now you want to cost ALL OF US INCLUDING YOURSELF IN THE LONG RUN MORE MONEY? Dang..... thats worng and I hope with all sinceraty your brother returns his s2 and keeps his s3 for himself.
if you dont think you are costing us money by waisting a completley good device that will have to be sold to asurion then wait until the next hike in sprints prices ex: TEP goes to $11 next month we have it good with unlimited data but since sprint customers try to cut so many corners the company is being forced to find ways to make up the money...... and I already know you dont care bout coporate america blahblahblah, we'll see when your in the "omg I cant believe sprint is charging me for this now thread"

I'm not sure if i exactly understand what you are saying. The grace period is 14 days, but the new phone comes in 15 days.
My plan is to go on the 20th (the 14th day of the grace period) and tell them he doesn't want to keep the galaxy s2, but wants to keep the plan. Then I will have thenm activate a treo or TP2 that I have laying around in lieu of the gs2, wait until the next day or two when the GS3 is out (he will have to use the treo for a day or two) and have him purchase the GS3 at that time.
Crossing my fingers and hoping that works.

I appreciate your opinion. However, I am not doing anything outside of Sprint's own limitations. They have a 14 day grace period for you to try out the phone. I will end up paying 35 dollars likely for returning the galaxy s2 as well. The whole purpose of the 14 day grace period is if you change your mind. I am more informed on the subject than my brother and have convinced him that the galaxy s2 was not a good choice when the s3 is coming out. I believe that is a legitimate reason to return the S2 and get the S3

OK not gonna start a war w you bout this but if that were the case they wouldn't ding the sales rep who sold you your device when you exchanged it, even worse if it is 3rd party you lose you comish all together. The policy is so if you are absolutely unable to learn a device or it does not fit into your lifestyle such as work or things of the sort, it not put in play so we can test a device or borrow for 2 weeks bottom line weather you believe it or it straight up coat the company money period and if we dont preserve what we have it will be gone.

I take no offense to your post and understand your stance on it. I was not aware that the representative loses their commission if the item is returned, but that does make sense considering that sprint did not make any money on it. Considering that fact, I can try to return to the same representative when purchasing the galaxy s3 to minimize his loss at the very least.
Won't work, you have to do a direct exchange within the 14 days. If you return it, they'll cancel the account which will cancel his number. If you "activate a treo in the mean time", his 14 days is still running, meaning he'll be out of luck come the 15th day. Best bet is to call customer care to see if they will let you pre-order the S3 and use a temp phone in the mean time.
Should have waited one more day.
EDIT: As long as you exchange the device, the rep still makes commission for the activation. If you outright return it, they get charged back for it.

Thanks for the tip. Although I don't understand why he wouldn't be able to keep the phone line without keeping the phone. I guess they are linked? Would he be able to just activate another sprint line without purchasing a phone and just transfer the line over to there?
I think I'll just have to go down to Sprint with him soon and figure all this out. In the end if we can't do it it's not a huge loss. The GS2 is and will still be an awesome phone. It would just be awesome to have the latest and greatest
He can return the phone completely on last day then buy the SGSIII when it comes out. Or just return the SGSII ina week then get another phone to reset his 14day period

Exchanging does not "reset" the 14 day guarantee. If you exchange on day 14, that's the phone you're stuck with.
on a somewhat related note, you only get one exchange during that 14-day period so be sure to choose the exchange wisely.
So after all of that my brother decided to stay with Verizon because he wasn't happy with the wireless service on sprint. No new phone...

Apparently bit too late but still may be someone will use this info.
I was due for upgrade last year in july when EVO 3D came out.
I had a Samsung Moment and I used my upgrade to get EVO 3D.
Back than it was 30 days grace period.
I kept EVO 3D for about 2 weeks and couldn't get used to it. So I returned it to Sprint and went back to my Samsung Moment.
My account has been reset and money has been refunded except for $35 restocking fee.
It all happened in July.
6 months later in December I used my upgrade to get SGSII.
So if you have account and you return the phone you still keep the number and contract. At least it's true for upgrades.

Just to clarify things yes the number and the ESN from whatever device you have at that time are linked. If you return the device you cannot keep the line open as it will not have a valid ESN attached to it.
A sad day for all in the N7 family. Just received a text from Sprint:
Sprint: Samsung's Note7 disabling update is underway. Software updates & notices will remain active indefinitely for all Note7 devices. Return or exchange the recalled Note7 by Friday 1/20. Waived fee & Samsung credit OFFER EXPIRE JAN 20. Make an appointment! http://sprint.us/pEhZg
At this point, I guess it makes sense to turn it in if you have another phone to fall back on. 6 months of a free phone is cool in my book. Moving back to my Galaxy S5 until something better comes along.
Its kind of cool in a way with Verizon call forward all calls except 911 from note 7 to customer service.
http://fortune.com/2017/01/17/samsung-galaxy-note-7-verizon/
Verizon may bill holdouts for the remaining price of the phone... Not cool at all.

I would think if you keep the phone, you pay full price. This seems normal to me. One of the reasons I returned mine was because I wasn't going to be paying for a potentially dangerous phone with bad reputation.

I'm about to find out tomorrow, but from what I read, Sprint must issue a full refund, + $100 if I switch to a Samsung phone, or +$25 if I switch to a non-Samsung phone. This would include refunding what you paid into the phone already. Hence 6 months of a free phone, assuming they refund the 6 months I already paid.

Good luck Sprint with that "OFFER EXPIRE" crap. You cannot legally sell someone something, maliciously and deliberately break it and then refuse to give them their money back. Doing so would be illegal in all western territories.
Well I didn't get $100 for switching back to my S5, according to Best Buy, the incentive only applies when buying a new phone. Took two hours for BB employees to finish the return due to complications and misunderstandings related to the first recall. Verified that the lease installments I'd paid on the phone were refunded with Sprint as well. Now to wait for the S8 series to see if I want to go that route vs the LG V20 or another flagship device.
I purchased my note 7 thru a 3rd party sprint store back in august, returned it in Dec and im still waiting on SPRINT to return my money, its been at a warehouse since Dec 22nd and they said 15 days for a refun, well its almost a month and still no refund or credit to my account. Good luck with the returns

... which is one of my biggest concerns.
My main concerns however are,
1. There isn't another phone on the market that I actually like enough to want to swap to, and
2. (This is my biggest worry), I have zero confidence in the returns process here in the UK and that they will not **** it up and I will lose my number, which I have had for 17 years. I've been told so many different stories by people at Samsung and Carphone warehouse about what the correct procedure is, I am very worried they will get it wrong. Some say I need a PAC code before I bring the phone in and should port my number out before I do the return. Some have said no I must not do that, I must cancel in store. Some have said I don't need a PAC code if I am staying with Vodafone, others have said if I want to stay with Vodafone, I need to port out to another provider and then port back in again! It's a total mess and I am NOT risking losing my number due to a balls up by the people doing it.
Thankfully I have a friend at Sprint that has been helping me with the case, he actually called and pushed them along and TODAY over 1 month after my phone arrived at the warehouse ( who knows where this warehouse is) I got email from sprint that the 424 i paid in full ( 2 year agreement ) is going back to my credit card within the next 5 days. teh sprint website is having errors today and i will update this thread when money goes back on card.
