[GUIDE] Beginner's Guide For The HTC One X - HTC One X

Hi.
This is the guide I made for the Desire S forum to help newcomers to Android and HTC. It turned out to be quite popular and helpful, so I have given it a tweak for the One X and put it here for your benefit. It’s in .pdf format so you can download it and read it on your phone at your leisure.
Again this is only for people coming from Nokia, iPhone, Blackberry etc. I’m pretty certain that this device is going to tempt a lot of people away from them. If you’ve owned an Android before this will all be known to you.
Hope it helps!
P.S. This dropbox link will expire every couple of months. If you have problems downloading, let me know. I’ll get the link refreshed ASAP.
Link updated 9th May
Download link: http://db.tt/K7U6Z76L

Updated link so it should work again. Let me know if it stops and i'll refresh it.
Think I posted it too soon for most people to find. This is a VERY busy forum.
Happy to help.

I probably fall under the list of people who do not need to follow this guide. But alone the fact that one of the first things i read was not to install a task killer goes to prove that this is well worth a read for 'noobs'.
Hahaha! That was one of the first mistakes i actually made on my android phone, i installed a task killer.
Oh! Gotya Facetrap, i'm so installing that.

If it's even a little bit helpful then I'm happy!
I simply adjusted it from the Desire S guide I did.
I would like to have people post their new-comer stumbles and discoveries here. God knows I went through enough myself. Two years ago I thought an apk was an assault rifle!
If they are worth the addition then I'll periodically update this guide to include them (giving credit to the sources of course) and it should grow into quite a useful starting point from people finally putting their iPhone down.
It'll help me improve and evolve this beginners guide to help other newcomers from tripping on the same hurdles as us. We all started somewhere!
Note: This is not meant to include stuff on rooting, unlocking, flashing etc. This is already covered in sufficient detail here on XDA. This is just about getting started.

To be honest, i really enjoyed this guide.
It's actually really helpful. Love some of the Apps you've listed, much better than the "top 50 android apps" i've encountered using google search.
The power management part was also of help. Didn't know of the "*#*#4636#*#* part.
Thanks!

Great guide, however, the wifi sleep policy advice can be confusing. Your guide says to set wifi sleep to "never". However, the option on screen refers to staying awake, not sleeping. Users should actually select "always"
Easy to work out but it may confuse noobs.

nice!!
thanks for the work and share!!

Handy guide, soo is tasker your app? Cmon you have to be some sort of benefitery

I actually heard about Tasker from an AT&T rep when I went in to change my plan. Awesome app, and this guide helped me learn about the loveliness that is exit task. I actually made a separate profile to undo what my work profile did. Good to know I can just make an exit task . I learned something today, woot! Once my battery test is done, i'll mess with it a bit more. Running the test because I am curious, battery runs fine for me so... 10min in, only 3% down.

That's how it used to be worded on older android phones, which of course caught me out when I switched to the HOX.

Good spot! Thank you. I tried to catch all the differences between DS and One X. That one slipped by. I'll put it on the list for the next rev.

Yeah some Roms have features that take over from Tasker. Sense 3.5 had that power management for battery low. It's gone in sense 4 (apart from that hidden menu but no one knows when it kicks in) so Tasker resumed that roll. It's just handy for filling the gaps in a Roms functionality, if like me, you can't write a line of code to save your life! Things like gps off when exiting navigation, and underclocking when using navigation AND charging (which makes my phone run VERY hot).

See following link:

Works fine on my Touch HD. Using Dutty's Extreme 2.1 ROM. No configuration required after install. Slight issue with the error "101: Invalid API key" thing but this is minor. A definite improvement on SkyBook.
Would be great to have this available from a seperate tab on touchFlo3D.

Yeah, OK. I promise to be more diligent in my link posting next time!
I've now updated the original post.
It's working fine for me on Duttys 1.9 rom.
Not bad, needs a bit of work.
a bit slow
works fine on the original stock rom, but is a bit slow to perform tasks inside the applications like scrolling the pages up and down. maybe due to the 3g speeds in optus in australia. will have to try using the application in wifi.
I haven't tried this app using 3G but with WiFi there don't seem to be significant speed issues.
tested it out, looks gd, but when i sent a msg, said API error, how'd i know if the msg sent at all??
try it (im on dutty 1.9 xtreme)

Thanks bro....works fine for me...
Far from perfect but it gets the job done, I kind of still prefer the look of http://iphone.facebook.com despite the decreased functionality.
great little app, a bit buggy but it can only get better and the UI is better than anything else I have tried on the Touch HD
left this running in the background overnight and this morning it comes into focus full screen saying "internet error" every 10 minutes or so.. closed it for now but may not like being left running.
I like the idea... would be nice to be able to drill down a bit deeper into the information it gives you before diverting you to the full website - no major advantages to using this over a shortcut on your internet tab imo.

question @ Paul so in theory can all unwanted apps be removed in a similar manner ? if so what steps would be necessary ? Thanks in advance and BTW thanks for contributing as always
That's fantastic! I can't wait to remove the bloatware from my g2! Any way to make a universal app that allows you to select the program to be removed? I'm not sure what sort of code that was involved with making your app work, but it seems like you could make a script based on the app that a user selects (like amazon mp3 or google earth).

I tip the burger I am eating in your favor! Awesome work!! I already used it, and updated goggles.
This is terribly brilliant. I read the explanation of the mechanism on the other forum - fooling the G2 into deleting files permanently from /system.
So the question is, are there any specific files in /system that, if deleted, could open up a further vulnerability to full root? This just got a lot more interesting
Any change of getting an app to remove all the bloatware in one shot?

No, when the phone is turned on, at some point the filesystem is turned to read only. As i understand it, they dont know what flips the switch at this point. esentially, we do actually know how to root the device, we just dont know how to accept writes to the system. paul has simply figured out how to trick the system into deleting files before the system turns into write protected. we still cant add anything to it, though.

[Q] Clockwork Mod 5.0.2 Not working

I just flashed 5.0.2 and I can no longer boot to recovery. I'm running:
ILWT CM7 b2 right now.
I can't reboot to recovery from the shutdown menu, or from ROM Manager. It worked once, and now it just sits there at the HTC screen. Any ideas? I tried to reflash it too from ROM Manager - same deal.
Open rom manager go to the bottom of the page, you can see an option that allows you to install a previus version of cwm.. it is called "clock work mod recovery (all)". try the previus version (3.0.2.4) install it... It should work...
sent from my HTC vision with synergy Rom using xda app
I flashed back to 5.0.1 - same issue. Could it be related to the ROM I have installed?
No. If you bothered reading any of the numerous threads speaking of this exact same issue..or looked in the clockworkmod thread you would see that recovery 5.X have issues. That's why the initial response told you to flash 3.0.2.4 not 5.

No clue man. Idk, my account was registered a while ago... if I post something, it means I either:
A.) Didn't feel like reading 500 pages on a thread where 90% of it is "cool ROM"
or B.) I couldn't actually find the result.
A handy "Ok, here's the answer" would be awesome. But alas, elitist dicks still exist on XDA. Forgot alll about that.
I have noticed an over-bearing douchey attitude in quite a few threads... Kinda makes you think twice about asking for help, which is retarded. That's the purpose of these forums, unless I'm mistaken...

Hey, don't assume! Check his post history before you definitively say anything about him - he might just be having a bad day.
Although, I am with you - XDA has two big problems - the people who actually are forget that google/XDA search exists (not saying that is you) and the people who think people asking questions must have an IQ below 50.
The first condition comes from people not using Internet comment sections (which I am all for, and never do) or forums (which are okay in moderation), and the second condition comes from people using comment sections or forums WAY too much.
Just look at Youtube comments. On the rare occasion I actually use that site and look at some of the comments, man... people are ridiculous when handed anonymity.
I apologize for moving so far off topic!
3rd edit:
Spastic909 is actually a cool person, fyi. I can recall numerous (though not specific) times just by looking at his avatar/name where he has helped me out.
"Mama always told me, if I ain't got nothing nice to say, then don't say nothing at all."
It's all good though, life goes on. I've seen it on XDA for a long time. It's fine. I'll just break my phone a couple times and figure it out myself. I don't post dickish remarks when I see stupid ****. I usually just laugh in my head and keep moving.

Testing it now. I was too busy cutting myself for being a lowlife and not searching every page on this entire forum for the answer :\
But now that I've half bled out, yes. You've helped me. I can't say the same for that other guy - considering he basically called me a **** for not doing specifically what you said. Whoops.
Not to start a flame war but I've seen numerous threads where it is mentioned, I had the same problem but ran into endless posts about it. Anyways not sure I saw an actual thread dedicated to it though.
Right - and you know how XDA puts "Similar posts" in the box before you post? I checked those too - and it searches everything, I saw nothing. I typed:
"Clockwork Mod 5.0.2 not working"
"Clockwork Mod Recovery 5.0.2"
All I got were threads on installing it. So... yeah, I did my thing. Anywho, going to go search a suicide thread on how to kill myself. Hopefully someone over there will guide me so I don't have to search cause I'm incredibly lazy.

The 5.0.2.0 does have many issues and I met the same problem too.
Solve it: reflash the recovery 5.0.2.0 via ROM Manager and it may fix, at least to my DZ, it works.
Just FYI, I think this is what you - and many others - are looking for. The last 10 pages or so, specifically.

[Q] Question for the Devs.....Epic 4G Touch GS2

I have learned over the last month a whole lot about modding, flashing, tweaking, etc.... What I am looking into now is a good place to start as far as contributing (dev type). There are a lot of forums here (obviously), that have some good tips and tricks, but I wanted to know from the source(es). Where is a good place for me to start, as far as tools, building environments, etc..?
So far I have hit up almost every android forum there is. I found a lot of tools from code.google.com, have sdk installed, have formatted my mac osx for HPS+ (case sensitive), installed developer tools for mac and macports, but I am stuck here. Any sort of guidance would be greatly appreciated.

WOW. I didn't know how much of a pain in the @$$ it was to triple boot a macbook. It took me 2 days to get this thing running the way I wanted it. So now I have my all purpose machine...... [ROM]EasyDoesIt 1.0 ~ Faux10u ~ Fluid ~ UCKK1 Base [3/24/2012]

Hello folks, my name is CB and I am no developer.
I neither want nor deserve any recognition or status and I don't want
any donations for the work I've done. I can cut and paste and I got lucky
that the people who have gone before me made all this **** very compatible.
I have gotten permission to use this base and this kernel. I got tired of waiting
and asking for someone to release a rom like this so I took matters into my own hands.
This is an ATT base and it
DOES NOT SUPPORT WIFI CALLING
at this time.

The good:

very light
highly dewizzed
zeam launcher
bravia
xloud
high res media fix
fast 3g/4g
The Bad:
No Wifi calling....yet
No CRT off
Money printing currently bugged
The Ugly:
Still twiz :'(
No Theme
TO INSTALL
- Make a Nand Backup
- Download rom.zip and place on sdcard
- Boot into clockwork recovery
- DO A FULL WIPE 3 DAMN TIMES!
- Install zip from sdcard
- Once zip has finished installing, reboot
- Now wait a minimum of 10 minutes, seriously...
- Reboot
ALSO I SUGGEST
After waiting 10 mins from first boot, batch restore all apps with data
THEN REBOOT
Then go and restore the user data like mms, contacts, wifi etc.
THEN REBOOT INTO RECOVERY and wipe cache, dalvik and fix permissions
Let the Rom settle for 5 mins after home screen boots.
This sequence will ensure a more stable system.
And also, Freeze wifi sharing and wifi sharing manager
and try it WITHOUT any OC apps first, if you followed all the above instructions it
should sleep very efficiently and be very responsive.
If your device is bricked at any time during the use of this rom I cannot be held responsible.

So what am I doing wrong? After I restored dat.... I have no icons at top of screen. When I try to swype down it brings me to all my applications....
Not a big deal at all, but when the phone is in vibrate it seems to show the silent icon on the status bar. Still vibrates, but the icon is wrong. Is this just me?
Thanks in advance,
Russ

Sorry to ask, and no offense intended, but can you address the question of whether the questionable components have been removed? I would like to try the ROM but want to be sure. Thank you!
I'm pretty sure he's aware of why his rom was taken down lol. Anyway, is there tw launcher in here at all?

Not sure how your observation is at all helpful or needed. I am sure he is aware of why it was taken down and I was not asking him that. I was asking if the reason it was taken down was addressed. Otherwise, it may be taken down again. I think it is a fair question and deserves an answer.

Well i believe it was only root explorer... You can always download the rom and see if it's in there. And if you fear the piracy police, just remove it. You shouldn't really be pressing for a question to be answered when it was just recently asked. Such demands makes you look arrogant.

Geez, I am not demanding anything, just explaining to the previous poster why I am asking the question. People are so uptight!

Agreed.
I just downloaded and installed. I don't have a huge timeframe in which to judge, but based on initial use, this ROM is BLAZING fast! Looking forward to giving it a run!!

I did answer your question, try not to be so snappy all the time
Just flashed this ROM, excellent speed, battery life seems decent so far (3% drain standby per hour). I remember you put up SKYicecream in your old thread in the general forum, any chance of working with that particular ROM again? Thanks!
