The Android File Transfer program on my mac keeps crashing. When i connect my galaxy nexus to my comp, the AFT program prompts, however the spinning wheel never stops spinning. i rebooted my computer and i re-installed Android File Transfer, but i cant figure out what seems to be the problem. I am running on 4.0.4, it worked fine when i was on 4.0.2. Does it relate to the new update? any suggestions? im trying to transfer files, and i prefer to do it this instead of via bluetooth, or via wifi using severs.
Mine is really picky as well. If I try to transfer large folders I often get the raindow wheel and have to force quit too. I've also found that instead of transferring large folders, its easier to create the folder on the phone and simply transfer the contents of the folder from your comp to your phone. I also always just unplug/replug the USB end.
Set your Gnex screen to stay on while it's charging. That seemed to help me.
Yeah this happens to us all I think. AFT is downright terrible.. I use AirDroid now to transfer files. It's slower than USB transferring, but its keeps me from raging over how bad AFT is /heh
But AirDroid is simple and effective, I definitely recommend trying that out.
Mine works fine. Works best if you unlock the phone then connect it. Let it open AFT and do your thing.
What version are you guys running? The current version is Version 1.0 (1.0.16.6656) and it seems to work perfectly on my MBP.
The older builds were completely useless.
It happened to me, I removed the program and reinstalled and now it is working well.
Just installed this on MBP with Lion and it's working fine. Just have to set the transfer to MTP (it was in camera mode).
Ya it does seem that it works now.
Latest version works pretty good. Not a big fan of the gui interface. Wish it looked a little better. Agree making folder on phone makes things a little easier.
I haven't used anything other than adb push or pull since android 1.6
Hey Im a bit late to the party but maybe this will work for those of you having trouble..
Im on the Samsung Galaxy S2 (running the CM9 nighties) and haven't been able to get it to mount on my Mac Pro ever since going to CM9.
None of the options (MTP, USB Mass Storage, etc) worked for me at all.
I was going to download the Mac File Transfer app again (since I initially downloaded it on my phone and now have no way to get it onto my Mac) but the website was down this morning so I ran off to Google instead.
I ran across a post regarding the Galaxy Note over at androidforums.com where someone said to turn off USB debugging, and then it works. The instant I turned off debugging, the good old Android USB Mass Storage screen came up when I plugged in the USB cable, I clicked the 'Turn On' button at the bottom and it mounted both my internal and external SD cards just like it used to when I was running the stock ATT 2.3.4 rom.
Try that and see if it works for ya!
Sounds simple enough, I will definitely try it when I get home from work!
It works! Awesome tip Slavestate!

OK, I just don't get it. I've tried different PC's/Cables, etc. I have files/folders (mainly CWM, larger stuff) that will NOT drag and drop onto my PC from my GN. It makes no sense. I can view the virtual SD PERFECTLY FINE, but when I drag and drop, nothing happens. When I try to drag and drop certain things onto the virtual SD, half the time I get told that the device can't be found/has been disconnected.
I mean, this is a HUGE issue that I can't just drag and drop my entire SD Card to make a backup and then transfer those contents back on. What am I missing? I've tried connecting as MTP and PTP, makes no difference. Both of my boxes are Win 7. One is 32bit, the other is 64 bit. On top of that, I was just trying to transfer some data and the ENTIRE Virtual SD got deleted (luckily most everything was backed up). This is seriously borked. I've RTFM for days now and I can't find a solution.
Try reinstalling your drivers even if they installed fine.
Tried that. It's like the only solution is to reboot my PC. I'm fine with doing that, it's just general frustration with not understanding MTP. Is this a mass file header issue with data transfer? Something on my computer's end?
"Copying: 23 Hours Remaining"...from an SSD to Virtual SD
Less than 8 gigs of data. FML
That's odd I've always been able to just drag and drop without issues in W7.
Use Airdroid from the market. It works.
also had the same issue and gave up until i discovered Airdroid. It's also free

I second this. I don't have any problems with MTP myself but for most file transfers it's just easier to turn on AirDroid than retrieving my usb cable and hooking it up that way.

Hi there! I just bought the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 2. I'm trying to connect the phone to my MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion OSX so I can transfer my files and such and also access the SD card. On my previous phone, (HTC Sensation 4G), all I had to do was just connect it to the usb cable and I'll see my phone accessible on finder. This is not my case for the Note 2 right now. I even installed Android File Transfer and it still doesn't work. Android File Transfer reports, "Could not connect to device. Try reconnecting or restarting the device". And of course I tried all of that. The only thing that works is the Kies software from Samsung but the software is incredibly slow. It is telling me that it will take 10 hours to transfer a 125MB file. It doesn't make any sense at all. I'm running a maxed out MacBook Pro Retina Display and I got a spankin new phone using it's provided usb cable and I tried others. My only option to transfer files fast to my SD card is by taking it out physically and connecting it to my SD Card adapter
Please help! Thanks in advance

I've always had trouble with Android File Transfer and all my Samsung phones on my MacBook Pro. Sometimes it works and sometimes it don't. I avoid using it as much as possible now and just use AirDroid (which is slow and very similar to the Kies software) or I just remove the SD card and transfer files using an SD card adapter. I haven't found a fix or workaround to get it working properly.

I got a fix for you...... buy a real computer a pc and throw that piece of crap in the garbage. Did you install the drivers? is usb debug checked in developer options?

Please, don't give me that "PC vs MAC" crap I have both PC and MAC and reasons why I use both operating systems. And from using Mac & PC for the past 7 years for the work that I do, Mac OS X has been by far the most reliable operating system that I've ever used. On top of that, I do a lot of radio mixing work and DJing and graphical designing and such and Mac is a must. I've had a Windows laptop before gave me nothing but issues whatsoever. I spend a lot of money buying expensive and top of the line Windows laptops and I always have to worry about maintaining the damn thing and went through a lot of stress because of it. So I'm happy with what I have. But on a side note, I find the iPhone to be the crappiest phone on the planet and I have a Dell XPS for gaming and as a multimedia box. So I hope that justifies that I'm not an apple fan boy.
I did install drivers and yes I had USB debug checked.
Anyways I found a solution for Mac users. I have VMware running Windows 7 & Windows 8. I have both operating systems connected and running seamlessly with the my Mac files so I'll be able to access and edit files that would be on my Mac on my virtual operating systems. And that was a fix for me without having to transfer any music, pictures, etc to a different PC and then transfer the files to my phone. Although it requires virtualization, it's the only thing that worked for me. I still wish there was better compatibility. I had no issues with my old HTC HD2 and HTC Sensation 4G. Samsung really got me angry about this one and their Kies software is complete crap.
Hi guys,
All of a sudden I can't get access to my GNex which I'm running official, un-rooted Google Jellybean 4.2.whatever
When I plug the phone in USB I get the Galaxy Nexus in my explorer, when I open it I get the "Internal Storage." I open that up but then all the folders just keep loading in apparently, and the progress bar at the top just keeps going forever and ever. If I try to access any of the folders then Windows Explorer hangs completely until I unplug the phone.
I've tried turning on/off the USB debugging, I've tried turning switching between MTP and PTP and unplugging/replugging in the phone but nothing seems to work.
This all worked perfectly fine until recently and I have no freakin idea why.
I've got the drivers installed (the ones necessary to use the GNex Toolkit because I used that to wipe my phone completely and use an official ROM.
I can access everything just fine on the phone itself with a file explorer app so I don't believe it to be a memory corruption thing or something like that.
Here's a pic of what I mean.
http://i.imgur.com/6C63Yk0.png
You can see the bar at the top, you can see some named folders and some unnamed folders. If I try to access any of them it just hangs.
If I leave it to run and progress through the bar just keeps going forever, it doesn't stop and I still can't access any of the folders.
Any ideas?
Do you connect your phone via USB hub or anything similar?
If you do try to put your phone directly to USB.
If you have Logitech unifiying reciever try to unplug it and without it. That was a problem couple of times for me.
I am having problem with phone constantly disconnecting from USB in Explorer, don`t know why. MTP is such a bad solution, using AirDroid most of the times

It's not plugged in a USB hub at all. It goes right into my PC with a USB cable that I've always used so it's really weird that this is happening now.
What's airdroid? I'll have to look into that, thanks.
i suppose i have a couple of questions really, and they confound me greatly=).
Occasionally when i am listening to music on the phone (i finally decided on rocket player after much ado), the phone tries to record me.(ok google. i've...mostly?...disabled it?) I don't know if this is a hardware(as in the headphone jack) or software issue...but it bugs the heck out of me.
Happens over and over again. I've managed to disable the error message and so forth but am not sure why i can't make it go away.
The second issue is that the only Windows computer I have in the house is an ancient xp desktop(ive got a win7 laptop that that is quite new but it's not set up for it yet been busy) that is disconnected from the internet for good reason. I used it to root the phone, fix the softbricks that i accidentally did (learning curve etc). But once I installed a 128 gig sd expansion, it would no longer recognise either phone hard drive in usb debug mode(they show up as identical unrecognisable 32 gig drives). I've gotten around this with stickmount, but it is also irritating. EDIT: Installed lg g3 drivers on laptop. Doesn't recognise the phone period. XP computer recognises the drives but cannot see the contents
Third question. The xda app stopped working on my phone, and i can't figure out why. It's one of the few apps that has enough permissions to access internet etc.
Last one. What's the best custom lollipop firmware...i only ask this as an addendum bc i haven't had time to look at them recently, still using kitkat. The fact that phone is no longer recognized by computer also makes this process more difficult if i screw it up
Sorry for a kinda double post, as ive posted this in the noob thread, but I think its being overlooked.
When connecting to a PC, how can I get a normal file transfer mode?? the media mode is just too limiting, one file at a time, transfer with no ETA, cannot browse picture folders with image viewers.. "this file cannot be played are you sure you want to copy it" blah blah blah...
I'm sure on my old HTC sensation as well as media mode you had file mode.. but I cannot find it and I don't have usb 3.1 on my laptop only 3.0 so hopefully that's not the answer..
please help.. mostly after getting at my SD card without removing it from the phone as I can never find the "proddy thing".. not fussed if I need to install a third party app or other... but currently on stock EU rom non-rooted.

... im not sure if i can help you really. What is the operating system you are using there? MTP works for me in Linux aswell as with Win 10.

When connecting to a PC it should pop up a question about how you want to use the connection. So select Filetransfer and trust it with "Yes". And that s it basically. You can also find this in the notification bar... eh about what to use USB for.
Also be sure to have suiting drivers. IIRC they should be installed with HTC Sync Manager. Maybe installing HTC Sync Manager would fix your issues already?

How old? I think this special mode you refer to was removed some Android releases ago already. Nowadays theres MTP. By all this speed of that USB ports nowadays intention seems to be initially that you do not have to unmount it in order to get all that stuffs you knew from past. I remember when my ONE-S got a update suddenly in past where exactly this step to MTP happened. Since the USB2 hardware in this old phone was a bit older and worse it became slower than before. Many ppl had been looking for a fix for this, since you could not enable it like it was before. IIRC one solution was to use a custom ROM. I can not recommend using a custom ROM personally.

No it is not. I m also having a 3.0. Still at least with marshmellow you would have to enable the fast file transfer with 3.1 explicitly in the case you really have such port on your Computer. And still theres some influences and things to consider to get optimum bandwidth.
But a 3.0 connection is usually not as crappy as you describe it now. So i would sugguest you:
- I assume a driver bad.
- Or Faulty cable.
- Maybe some setting in your file browser on the computer?
- Is the preview disabled maybe?
- Latest drivers for the phone? (HTC Sync Manager)
At very first i would try to get latest HTC Sync Manager for HTC10 from HTC website. Or if you are in linux, check your packages, udev rules and that MTP gets rolling.
Hope this helps a bit.
PS.: Try connect your Phone to another computer with maybe Windows 10 and latest HTC Sync Manager. Just to exclude that your computer or its software might cause this issue.
Thanks for the reply, my "old" htc was probably 6+years ago.. I think it was my first android phone, Recently I have been using LG G3 running cyanogenmod, so have always had a proper "file mode".. it was just like plugging in an external hard drive. I did not realise this was not a feature anymore in standard android.
The main problem I dislike is not being able to view pictures... If I open one picture from my phone or SDcard, then my picture browswer says viewing picture 1/1 even if the folder has 200 pictures in it, I cannot space/tab through the pictures, I have to close that one, then open the next.... I do find it frustrating only being able to copy one file at a time, and constantly having to tell it that I do want to copy the file despite not being able to play it, but those things I can live with.
I already have tried installing extra software and on windows 7, (I am running W10) but no luck
It just sounds like they want you to remove the SD card.. shame they make it so impossible to do.. I'll continue to hunt for a solution without custom rom.. and post any findings.

How is it. How do you think about an alternative way to transfer data like e.g. from playstore Air Droid using WLAN.
Did you try another data cable, by all ports and operating systems?
And just in case. Do both of your computers feature the same USB drivers and hub? Maybe a driver issue.
I noticed one thing recently. When i connect with MTP and copy lets say: "400 MB pictures" taken with my old phone, spread on 97 files to the SD card it does not take long. But what takes long like 20 seconds after copying is done is that it shows previews. I have to really wait until it is done transferring.
So could it be maybe the case your phone does not finish somehow?
And yes the Windows Photo thingie does not see it as folder to slide through.
Meaning: i can not deny your issues fully.
Honestly what i totally love is an Plasma Desktop for linux is an software which called KDE Connect. You get WLAN connection to your phone and can even control the mouse. Do simple file transfers. And what i totally love about it is, is that it almost seemingless integrates into the Desktop. On the other End i think WIN10 does not feature such service (stock). Air Droid is one of those tools in this way which you can expand the computer expirience with. The preview and copying over WLAN is blazing fast. Plus you do not have to connect the cable.
But it requires a client/server and permissions on both ends. And thats what i dislike about the Windows side. It is not so seemless. And it is in the way of one of those extra services, running.
Also the speed of the SD card does in fact matter. Is it maybe one of the older generations you inserted?
The new SD's from this year are much faster and bigger.
E.g. read about SD card speed classes SDXC class U1, U2 and U3
Even if you can push 1 GiB /s through a cable.... if the SD only takes 96 mib/s...... lol
Maybe interesting to have a look at what about capacity / price is happening in 6 years.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/10315/market-views-hdd-shipments-down-q1-2016/3
So lets say you was using a 6 years old SD.
Your phone is worth (lets say 600 $) but the SD is not worth any cent. In case the SD was so old.
This is how Android now is.
What you're looking for is USB Mass Storage mode. They removed that because it was a wide security hole where someone could just plug your phone into a computer and copy all your storage and mess things up at will. Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) is all Android has now. Your phone memory doesn't just have your photos and music on it; it also has your apps, logins, systems files, etc.
The "file cannot be played" prompt that bothers you can be disabled in Windows. Just do a Google search on that. As for transfer speed, I'll bet you that it's a bad cable and nothing more. MTP isn't slower than UMS.
Good luck.
Thanks also.
I didn't mean to imply it's slow transfer. By limiting I mean it's holding me back. I like to transferr a 20GB video, and while it's doing it, go to my pics and view+sort them etc. But now I cannot. One at a time. Zzzzz..
It sounds like I will either need to investigate lineage again. (I'm unsure at this stage what I loose if I do, camera apps, mirror cast etc). Or perhaps buy a hand full of "proddy things" so I can more easily remove the SD card. I can never find it when I need it.
Thanks for helping me get my head around this alien tech/systems. I feel I understand now what's happening and why.
