Possible Call Audio/Echo Fix With ICS Ports - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hey fellow XDA's, I know that a lot of people are having issues with the call audio bug or echo in the current ICS Skyrocket ports. I recall reading somewhere of a possible solution and just thought I would make a thread for it here. If this is not the right place or if there is a better place please let me know. Anyways, here it is:
While in call, tap the menu button and disable noise cancelation. Seems to work for me every time.
If this seems worthy of a thanks, please give one!

That never worked for me, my only solution was to remove the case I was using. Without a case on the device, it worked fine.
There was also no echo with speakerphone on. Or bluetooth. The very moment I switched to cm7 the echoing stopped completely.
Case = call echoing. I even cut into the rubber near the mic and everything, somehow on ics, sound travels thru ur case and back into the mic.. It's beyond confusing to me

I am having a problem too when people I talk to hear an echo. I read your solution before and it didnt helped me at all, and I dont have a case for this phone anyways so o know it is not a case causing it
now im back to gingerbread because of that bug. I wish somebody can really bypass this bug

For the majority of people (myself included) having/not having a case doesn't have any effect on this phone.
Also the the noise reduction feature helps somewhat but even with it turned on, people I'm talking to can still hear their voice echo unfortunately. I'm sure the devs are working on it as we speak so I'm sure there will be a workaround at some point!

Perhaps ^^ that was a typo but I said that turning noise cancellation OFF helped. Not turning it on...
Also, in regards to the case being at fault, I am sure that my experience and finding has nothing to do with a case, it is a shame that we all have the same phone but my phone seems to be unique in the sense that turning off the noise cancelation completely fixes my call issue. strange.

This did not help.
Also a headset microphone didn't help either. idk
back to GB.

Doesn't work for me but with the blaze modem I do have an improvment not 100% better but I it is an improvement

There is definately a case issue...when i was on stock rom with case people would complain about the echo and while in call i could take off the case and callers would report that the exho was gone.
Now on the ics roms there is a new bug where the echo is present even without a case. I flashed the blaze modem and all seems to be well now.

[Q] my voice returning to earpiece

Hi, I'm having a weird issue on my defy. Basicly, during a regular phone conversation, when I speak I can hear my voice out from the earpiece.
There is no delay in it and It's not so bad really (sometimes I don't even notice it) and I don't think I couldn't live with it, but for now I still do notice it which is not very good.
For the record, it's a B33, hence from the older or "unsafe" series... but in my theory, this should not related to the widely acclaimed earpiece problems.
What do you think?
How loud is it?
I haven't noticed it myself but instantaneous feedback is used on phones to stop the user from shouting into their phones unnecessarily.
Otherwise it could be the other person on the line using a speaker-phone or something.
not very loud actually, you just know it's there, and it's for all persons I'm calling, not limited only to one... as said, there is no delay whatosver, just some presence of your own voice coming out from the earpiece. a bit difficult to describe... maybe a lot of people dont even notice it...
now I tried to record my voice with a voice recording app and there is no such feedback
I can hear my own voice like an eco when I talk to others.. it is very annoying and I have had my phone repaired for broken earpiece speaker. That did not fix the eco problem. I have also got my phone replaced once because of other problems, still has eco when speaking.
My wife says she doesn't hear it when she use my phone. But I'm very annoyed about stuff like this.
It do help a bit if I hold my phone different and a bit further away from my mouth when I talk in it.
if I could I would return it now, I thought I could ignore it when I got used to it but now I can't (had it since december) and now I'm dreaming of other phones to replace my Defy... most likely a Nexus S so I get vanilla android.
for how long you have the phone? it could be a defective piece , mine is from the older pieces too made in november 2010 but hasnt any problems for now anyway i own it from one month and it will be no suprise for me if it starts making problems...
I have experienced this from time to time. I first noticed that it was happening primarily when my phone was switching to edge connection from the 3g. Someone else suggested that when this happens it is because the user is speaking too loud. I have tried lowering my voice when I get the echo and it does go away. However, this still only seems to happen when the signal switches. Perhaps pay closer attention and see if it is the same for you? Definitely try lowering your voice. I did a test with my wife on the other end and when I lowered my voice she said I sounded the same to her but my echo went away.

but are you experiencing the echo also with delay? this only happens sometimes
and most of the times occurs when the person you are calling has the volume of the earpiece too high so the microphone is able to catch it and there you have the echo with delay.
but in my case there is no delay, it's just like my voice is directly amplified to the earpiece.
I've had 2 Defys so far and have noticed the echo whenever I speak slightly loud with both phones,i think it's supposed to be a feature or something so that you know how you sound because it's also found among other devices

thanks a lot. actually it could make sense because if you think of the defy as a rugged phone and it's meant to be used in difficult conditions where the user tends to speak too loudly.
I got defy about a week ago and i also had this issue. I returned the phone to the shop that i bought it and i am waiting for them to check it in order to get a replacement.
Also,i have noticed that i hear my own voice through the speaker a bit amplified and without any lag when i talk with my mouth close to the microphone. This was not only happening while i was having a conversation in a call, but from the very first moment that the call was launched.
For instance, when i was talking during the dial tone and before the recipient has accepted the call, i was keep getting my voice back through the speaker. That can exclude any network related cause of the problem.
So i can't understand if this is a normal condition or a problem and i am anxious about the new device that i will get. I think that i got in all that trouble for nothing and the replacement is gonna be like the first one... Is there any way to avoid it?
The brand new defy that i got as a replacement arrived. It has the echo problem too... Hands Up.The phone is so good apart from this issue. It is so annoying though i would be glad if i could get it fixed.

Bad call quality? Anyone else?

Both my brother and I are having problems with bad call audio quality. Anyone else having these problems or know a fix.
Running stock 4.0.2.
Tried different sim cards.
Both signals was full.
Was talking with my brother earlier today, and he said it sounded like I only used vowels, and that he have had the same complaints.

Had a few different iterations of this problem. My wife had a bad mic and it sounded like "she was under water" returned it, no problem. Now sometimes she sounds just a little weird with the new one. I chalk it up to the fact we live in the sticks of Rootstown OH. Are other people complaining of your problems or are you guys complaining of eachothers?
There are others that have complained as well, but I get the complains when I use my headset as well. Using a Bose QC15 with the iPhone mic/cable.
I have been having issues with echo (hearing back what I say on about a 1 second delay, which can be extremely distracting).
I don't know if it's the phone, my provider, or possibly that the other person has me on speakerphone, since it seems to be more noticable on business calls- or I could be noticing it on business calls more because I'm trying to concentrate and the echo can derail my train of thought.
It's a bit of a mystery...anyone else have this echo or know the cause/solution?
Bad Quality Call Galaxy Nexus (ME TOO)
Hi guys the last two weeks i'm experiencing a weird problem with my galaxy nexus ics 4.0.2. When i'm calling someone i'm hearing a "wind" noise ...it's like psssss....something when i'm trying my headset the "wind" noise became worst, note that i;m hearing the same noise when someone call me ...I TRIED A LOT OF THINGs ... I used other headsets ....i changed the sim card....i tried another provider (i'm on 3g) ...but this noise remain .... do you think it's a problem that it can be fixed with the upcoming 4.0.4 update...should i return my galaxy back and try another one, or reset the phone?
P.S. Thnks in advance, have you heard when are we going to get an update?(4.0.4)
yup. The sound quality is not that great. Some times, I can hear my voice being repeated when I am talking on the phone.
I'm having the same problem. People complain that they hear an echo when I talk.
try turning down the ear piece volume the mic can pick it up if its too loud

Permanent Call Echo Fix (T-989, ICS + GB Roms)

So I have had the call echo issue for some time. Specifically once I started flashing ICS leaks left and right, but come to find out our issue is HARDWARE related rather than software related. To be clear this is a fix for the caller echo issue where the person you are talking to on the phone hears their own voice echoing back to them.
This thread pretty much sums up the whole thing.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1441510
Cliff notes: There is a speaker that has come loose in your phone either from some suspect glue, or perhaps even a rough tumble if you've dropped your phone once or twice. Once this happens, the nearby NC (noise cancellation) microphone picks it up and the call echo follows.
The fix here is very simple, you just need to unscrew the 6 tiny screws (careful not to strip them, and remove and reinstall them in the same order) and then pop off the casing that protects your T-989's innards. While the thread (and pics) above are for the international Galaxy SII, the important part at the top that needs to be covered (the speaker) is the same.
I tried the fix without really doing anything except removing the casing, cutting a small sliver of an old business card to put on top of the speaker, and closing and screwing the case back on. Didn't mess with anything else, and the fix works great. I called a couple people before I reinstalled the screws and I encourage everyone to make a test call to make sure the echo is gone before putting everything back together.
This is a really simple/easy fix to get rid of the call echo, and it explains while some people have the echo with/without a case and to varying degrees. But I'm now enjoying Racing's UCLD ICS Rom with no call echo and all is right in the world.
If anyone needs anymore help just let me know, and those of you that have the echo and try this please report back.
Interesting..... tho I do not have the dreaded call echo, this makes sense because I never dropped my phone. . I know what to do now if I have the problem tho!
Thanks forbthe saceifice my question is tjis: if itsbhardware, then why is it that i dont get the same issue when running non-ics roms. It seems to me that running a non sgh-t989 ics ported rom is the issue. While some of us have been lucky, its happened to me with every ics ported rom but never with gb or aosp roms(eugene cm7 kang). ??? On a side note, if thats what it takes ro fix it, im more than willing to wait for ics for our phone than possibly break something and void my warranty. Also, ive used a case and also havent and have dropped my phone a few times. I would like to see other confirmed reports of people trying this.

Make sense why some users never experience it and others do no matter what they flash.
I am thinking Samsung obviously must have adjusted the noise cancellation mic sensitivity or settings with ICS. It could also be the ICS framework with the way it handles it or maybe the RIL (radio interface layer) of the ICS roms.
Either way it makes a lot of sense especially if so many dont experience the issue on any rom while others it is every ICS rom.

Not an epic fail if he beat the call echo issue. Its quite a macguyver type fix but it did the trick. I would rather wait for it to be fixed on the software side myself, however.

Thats true or it could be that we don't have a official ics modem +Ics rom it could be interfering some how
Call echo only happens with volume up all the way. If u put in call volume to medium-low it isn't noticeable. Call ur cell from a landline and blow into the mic on landline phone, if it repeats back lower volume and repeat until u don't hear it. What's happening is the headset speaker is too loud and the other mic is picking it up at the top

That may not be best for pple in the city with low call volume i know they would want to be able to actually hear the person outside you know
im a little scared to pull my phone apart too. I think i'll wait for a software fix
well i never dropped my phone but i do have that issue with ICS and GB!!! when im on ICS my friends says that there is an echo when im on GB they say they can hear me wierd, and when i take the case off they say its a little bit better. so i do think its a hardware issue!!
in the other hand my friend that works at tmobile says that he had heard this issue with all of tmobile phones not just this one
Thanks for the replies guys, good discussion on this topic so far.
I agree this is definitely a "macguyver" type fix, but hey if it works it works. I've been daily driving Racing's various ICS ports since the initial leak in SPITE of the caller echo issue (I just talked to everyone on speakerphone lol) so this is really welcome news to me.
As far as damaging your phone, IMHO hacking the phone and installing Rom's is just as potentially dangerous (if not more so) than taking out 6 tiny screws out and inserting a small piece of paper underneath the casing, but its everyones decision if they want to try or not.
I have verified with 4 different callers and tested myself that the fix works for me WITHOUT a case. When I put the D30 case back on my phone there is still echo. Not as bad as before, but its definitely there.
So rolling with no case is kinda annoying but I was thinking of getting an extended battery anyways so this just makes it easier
FWIW I tried this fix and still get call echo... Slightly reduced maybe but definitely still there.

Interesting do you have a case on your T989? Are you on a GB rom or an ICS leak?
Did you use a business card or just a thin piece of paper? Sorry about all the questions just trying to get as much info as possible from people experiencing this issue.
I also ONLY had the call echo issue when I flashed an ICS rom (and I had the call echo on all 3 of them), however when I went back to STOCK Gingerbread it went away. So maybe this issue is part software/part hardware?
The ICS leaks were the first roms I ever flashed, so I'm interested to know if ANYONE has the call echo on STOCK Gingerbread? I'm thinking that something in ICS increases the gain or does something to either the NC microphone or the speaker somehow?
Happened only on ICS Roms with and without case. GB Roms are ok. Used a business card.

Bummer man sorry to hear
If it is a "little" bit better with the business card in there you could try to maybe fold it over and make it a bit thicker? If it helps even a little bit maybe there is some potential there to fix it?
where are the noise cancellation files in the ics leak?
my experience from today... i went back to 100% stuck and still had echo.. not as bad with an ics rom.. but my girlfriend had told me that she was hearing it so i took off the cover and she says that it was better. so i kept talking to her and then she said the she hears an echo again so i started to talk more into the mic.. and it was gone. so i do believe its a hardware issue and its when my mouth is not close enough to the mic is when others hear an echo.. ok then again i rooted the phone and flash ics megamix on it so i gave my phone to my girlfriend to see if i can hear an echo.. so when she was holding the phone correctly i didnt heard it but when she put the phone in her shoulder and to hold it there while she talks i hear the echo.. so tell me if this a software or hardware issue.. i think it have something to do with the surrounding and how laud you talk to the person

Otterbox defender and caller echo

Hi,
i just bought the case and soon after, the person i am talking to complain of hearing echoes of their own voices.
i tested this by calling some robot (topup service or something) and tried to listen from the mic side.. and guess what, i can hear its voice quite clear here! i guess the sound from the speaker travelled too damn well through the case, and eventually coming out from the mic port.
have anyone else noticed thsi problem? do share pls..
Haven't come across this from anyone on the AT & T forums. I ordered mine yesterday and will report back when I get it installed to try and replicate this issue.

Yezza. Full max volume for call. Try to reinstalled ur case n test agaon.
In the echo still persists, might be network since ur on maxis n im on celcom.
i tried using it without the case, and no echoes detected (i tested it by using another phone, calling to my note), so i am certain the case is the culprit. installing it again does nothing to help.
ah well, i guess i had gotten myself a defective unit somehow, or my callers are just annoyingly *****y. Interestingly, google also reported that this issue existed on iphone 4 otterbox defender...
You are not the only one having problems!
I am experiencing the very same problem. Callers hearing their own voice echoing back even at the minimum sound level on my device... The case somehow causes echoing.. very annoying.. I've been called 3 times by different people tonight right after I switched to Defender.. each person called me three times thinking that there must be something wrong with their phone.. Was it their phone??? No! It was Defender causing problems..
Will I in the end give up using this case? I doubt it. Paid too friggin much to dump it.. Is it annoying? F.ck yes!

[Q] Speakerphone Problems?

Hi folks,
Has anyone actually got the speakerphone to function on this phone?
Talking to several different people now, they struggle to hear me. It's almost as if the sound cuts out, and it's held pretty close to my face.
I often need the speakerphone while i'm busy doing other things and it seems impossible with this handset.
Not sure what I am doing wrong. Have tried all kinds of settings.
