ICS for HTC Desire: BCM vs Sandvold - Desire General

I change the question?
What is the difference between this 2 ROMs? What is stable in one, not on the others? Which ROM do you prefer?
Also, feel free to suggest other ROM based on Android 4

as far as I am aware they are probably more than willing to share bits from each to get stuff working so it'll probably happen at the same time

This. There is no race, because the Devs always help each other out rather than compete.
The real question is whether or not they will be stable before CM9 eventually clambers out of the gates. And that's only if the CM9 team isn't sharing hacks with XDA devs anyway.
Oh, and erklat? You forgot one.
ICS will never be stable

Im using Sandvolds ICS and i find it fairly stable, using it daily in my work. Havent tried BCM tho.

I have only used Sandvold for some time now, and it's very stable and fast atleast for me.

Sandvold is hell, and BCM is "What's the hell"
Sandvold issues:
App Freeze, Lag
Mobile data randomly don't connect
BCM:
Can't boot (managed to boot after delete /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/ by adb)
No lock screen
No app switcher

I think we have a winner on this.
Apart from this, it's the usual: Flash both and see for yourself.
And, the answer: The difference is: BCM is CM based, and Sandvold is evervolv based.

I think you need to flash after a full wipe... I'm switching from BCM 3.1U0 and Evervolv 0.5.1 without problem, both boot well and perform somewhat good, lock screen works, app switcher works.
It varies from person to person, but i think ICS it's not a good everyday ROM, we need some more stability and tweaks!

I figured out the BCM problem.
The script at /system/etc/init.d/90threshold
Code:
#!/system/bin/sh
if busybox [ -e /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db ]; then
value=$(sqlite3 /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db "select value from secure where name = 'sys_storage_threshold_percentage'")
if busybox [ "$value" != "1" ]; then
sqlite3 /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db "insert into secure (name, value) VALUES('sys_storage_threshold_percentage','1')"
sqlite3 /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db "insert into gservices (name, value) VALUES('sys_storage_threshold_percentage','1')"
fi
fi
is run as root, makes /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db unwritable for system, so I delete it, cause lots of problems

Can somebody tell how to install ICS on my HTC DESIRE step bu step ...pls !

That depends on some additional information. Like whether you have root etc.
Check the roms corresponding threads in the developement-subforum.

I think #2 post got all lost in ics fanboy hysteria...
ho hum
OnT:
Is it stable yet or only 80 percent stable, or is it half stable and half henhouse?
I would have guessed half henhouse and half pigstie, but I have to trust you sharp guys when you tell me that part of the ROM is a stable or at least enough of a stable to keep your horses in on a daily basis or in your profession.
Cheers! Very informative thread if you don't use search button.

I rooted and flashed my device by reading (and executing) the steps in the desire-all-things-root-guide on androidforums.com
Good luck!

For a friend of me, BCM ist working much better than sanvold but you cannot say that one of them are stable. There's a lot to do to make the ROM stable. I cannot recommend you it for daily use ;-)

I tried Sandvold one and BCM one.
Sandvold one was the first to have the hardware well supported.
But now, I daily use the BCM one which is very stable and responsive.
All hardware work, the battery is good, Android is up to date (4.0.4) and ROM author is nice with its users.
I have nothing to reproach to BCM rom. Works well (better than Sandvold for me).
(bad points are that it need 180mb+ to be installed and the presentation thread is not up to date (some described problems are solved long ago))

I totally agree Perfectslayer. BCM is supersmooth. And I agree that the developer is very helpful to lots of the people that asks questions in his thread.
Recommend to others who havent tried the ISC, to try both Sandvolds and dk_cool's . But if you only want to try one of them I recommend dk_cool's rom simply because it seems more stable, has more options and for me seems like the fastest and uses less battery.

If you want to use the rom daily, install BCM

If you must have ics, I recommend aosp with ics theme.

That is still GB which leaves Desire a two year old with lack of RAM and storage to name a few, unlike fully fledged ics rom which at least quadruples hardware prospects of our phone.

I think one of the reasons for this 'fragmentation of the rom community' is the sheer number of one hit wonder winzip experts popping up.
There are so many roms which are simply duplicates of other roms that it's hard for actual developers to get the attention their ROM deserves.
Take RaiderX for example.
He's a great developer, and has helped myself and Behnaan out in the past - his ROM gets hardly any attention. Then... someone comes along and re-themes behero, or Villain, and gets twice as many views/comments and probably donations.
For the record; I never would have moved to Villain as a primary if this community had remained as it was in January this year. There were what... 3 ROMs on the go? Maybe 4. That's manageable. It feels very cluttered around here recently.
Please don't take me the wrong way - I love seeing new developers (Robin for example), appear with something fresh.
Now - to the actual ROM.
I will post the ROM on here the day it's ready for public release. The initial reports have been incredibly positive. A lot of people have said it's the fastest ROM they've every used - which of course is astounding feedback.
I can't wait to release it, but as the guys will tell you - there are one or two minor issues I need to iron out first.
I'm not releasing this as an Alpha/Beta/RC - this is going straight to Final, public release.
I'm very proud of it.

Happy flashing!
Tried 2 of them robo and Baadnewz v similar but TBH no video camera,no trackball wake then none of them is the ****
InsertCoin v1 was running very sweet for me but for some reason updated versions caused problems, probably my fault couldn't be bothered with a full wipe currently using RCMix Sv08 very happy with that apart from the 2 points mentioned above and the lack of a menu function to swap from 2G to 3G easily signal,GPS,battery life all great compass i think borked but i never use it
I selected the rcmix S, because for now it's the only one I tested, and what I can say is that it is really fast for normal use. Compared to version rcmixHD
For other ROMs, they seem to be all good as each other. The developers follow the well updated and are listening to users. The user feedback at speed and bug are equivalent for all roms.
You guys did a great job! Thank you for all your work for our small desires.

Yes, as you noticed there are almost no differences in our roms, what i can see when i diff the roms is that only thing changed is the ril and some apps removed from insertcoin... so i dont know what is causing lag in my rom :/ strange... should be the same... It can be the plurk which he removed and i still have in my rom (possible memory leak in that app), i will check that when i come back from my vacation, now i am working on A2SD version of v08.

well i don't know where the lag appears, i changed the rils, modded init.rc, changed all wpa related files with the ones from gb leak in an effort to fix some wifi problems, i removed some files, fonts, and moved lib_s to /system/lib.
Problem with my roms later than v01 is flash player 10.2, problem that is also on my froyo roms. and i have no clue how to fix it, thou in robo's roms the problem doesnt exists, plurk i removed from v04 so users should tell if that did the trick or not.
And as mentioned before, robocik did the hard - porting - hacking part. without this we wouldn't have a sense 2.1 rom.
btw, anyone have a clue why compass is acting strange? not that i ever use it, but some users need it
Hmmm its too difficult to compare 3 roms...coz me n baadnewz using same base even features is 100% same...only difference between tweaking n optimization...
But my vote for RCmixS coz robo is the first person who port sense 2.1 Rom...

[Q] Newb at Android - CM10 yes or no?

Hello!
I have HTC One V PrimoU. I'm newb for that. Leave PC, there... And also there, I'm not in Linux... So, just to explain:
I used "HTC One V All-In-One Toolkit V1.2 [10-8-2012] [PERM ROOT] [Noob-Proof]", flashing recovery with TWRP 2.3.1.0 and Kernel with 3.0.16-Titanium-Kiss.
Happy with my new rooted device, I put on some root apps, that were suggested on page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1907885&highlight=app+for+root
So far, so good. I'm more that happy OK, I disabled HTC Sense with Titanium, but I also managed to restore phone back, so, no real harm done... Yes, I'm still learning - well, also, I couldn't find the list of HTC One V apps that you MUST leave alone... Searched all the net, found some on XDA, some on other sites, but - for newb (or noob) like me, it would be helpful...
But, somewhere, in the back of my head is still a question: Shoud I go for CM10? And if yes, why? - I read all thread of CM10, but still, what will I gain? For sure, CM10 will not turn my proc into quad ;-D Also, is there a valid reason why our phone will not get Jelly Bean officially? Forget ram, it's excuse for what?
However, I'd like to hear from you. I don't need much, gimme one reason to go there and I'll be there...
Appreciate all your answers, + and - , just keep smiling...
Best regards, Mat
Oh, forgot the most important...
THANK YOU!!!
For all that made tutorials which I followed to root my device... YOU'RE THE BEST!!!
And I'm more than happy when my phone, during the boot, tells me, in that red letters, that I won...
Best regards to all, Mat
I'm not an expert but I DO find some reasons to switch into CM10:
1) butter project really makes Jelly Bean fast and smooth
2) no lags anymore
3) more optimization options
4) smoother switching between apps
5) nicer lockscreen
However, there are some drawbacks that should be taken into consideration:
1) camera - poorer quality, occasional accidental killings, no more stock options, the graphical processor on HOV wastes..
2) battery drain - but not much of a problem, you can use e.g. Juice Defender to block the consumption
3) some other minor bugs
THANKS!!!

[ROM][14-02-13][Flinny] Andromadus - AOSP4.2.2[9]

Andromadus - Test Builds
To start with here you will find test versions of ROMs built by me from the Andromadus github repo http://github.com/Andromadus, think of them along the same concept as nightly builds just not every night These are development ROM's, if you want to run bleeding edge development ROM's and at least know how to use adb and logcat then you might find something of interest here. If you require something that works 100% of the time all of the time then this might not be for you. That said you can always give it a try and if it doesn't work restore your previous nandroid backup!
What IS Andromadus?
Initially it was a group of people who got together to make ICS work on the HTC Desire Z because nobody else seemed to want to support devices with physical hardware keyboards/trackpads. Whilst the idea stays the same It has grown slightly to support some other hardware and some of the work we have done is now used in many other devices. Andromadus builds of CM10 or CM10.1 are basically CM sources with a few additional tweaks or additions to support our phones.
1. New versions will be added as and when I feel there are enough changes to warrant one, don’t ask when the next version is coming.
2. If we decide to release a "Stable" version of these roms they will be published in another Andromadus thread.
Direct all your queries with release versions to that thread and in the same vain do not discuss these releases anywhere but here.
3. I will do as best I can to answer questions but if you don't get an answer from me I'm sure somebody else will be along to help. Help each other and I have more time to spend fixing things!
4. Don't ask for what's changed since the previous version, have a look at the recent submits on the Andromadus github if you want to know or wait for the mini changelogs when I post a new release.
5. If there is something in particular to test it'll be mentioned!
6. As always if you didn't wipe between installations then at least verify that the problem exists on a clean install before posting here. Nandroid/superwipe/install/check at the end of the day you can always restore your nandroid if the problem is reproducible on a clean installation. If you can't be bothered to try this then I really can't be bothered to try to help you :>
7. All that said ensure you make a nandroid/backup before hand. I take no responsibility for what you do to your phone with these ROM.
8. Whilst I can't stop you I would rather these builds were not used as a base for any ROM/MOD/ETC. The source is all available if you want to do your own builds with which you can do whatever you like.
9. Tell us what works/what's worse/what's better but don't ***** when something breaks or isn't fixed yet, report it and move on.
10. Sometimes people forget that we do this for fun, for ourselves, and sometimes your super important issue is way down on our personal list of things to be fixed.
If you ignore any of the above you will in turn be ignored.
Now that's all out of the way as always have fun
As usual you need to flash the ROM then GAPPS.

This a team/community effort, I'll not list everyone who has helped along the way here that list is in the beta thread but I will say thanks to all of them again and obviously anyone that has been missed.

Hi Flinny, great job on the AOSP builds they are running perfect. I only had one satback sins build 4. Suddenly my gallery stopt working and dropbox to. Because of the gallery problem my camera won't boot either. I flashed build 5 but I had the same problem. Build 4 was flashed with a full wipe and build 5 was flashed as update that the reason of course why the problem didn't left but sometimes it helps Does this sound familiar? Greetz Munky
I tested it last evening but have many FC message about "aosp keyboard" even with the physical keyboard
I wiped all but still the same message going back to cm10.1
Ok I'm a little rusty on the details at the moment but: AOSP means that you want it to get as close as stock experience as you can get right? (I'm really looking for a G-lite thing but then with ICS/Jelly Bean, sort of Nexus feel but then for our Desire Z)
What's everyone's opinion on these AOSP builds? To me they seem more stable and faster than CM. I kinda miss CM a little though, but not the lag.

I know that this is a dumb question and the answer is probably within the other thread, but... Ah heck, now it's just that I'm too lazy to look for the solution LOL...
But I installed AOSP 4.2 v6 last night and so far I'm not experiencing any major problems (except for FCing when I edit a picture and a bit of confusion adjusting to some new features LOL)... But when is this project going to be merged with CM? There are LOTS of creature comforts (e.g. silence during night hours, T9-style contact search, etc.) that I'm used to with the CM-optimized version that I kinda miss and only noticed that it was gone when I flashed it (I was under the impression that those features were all standard?)
Sorry to pester and thanks in advance.
EdWaRdW818:
Here you've got CM10.1 which is based on AOSP 4.2

Flinny:
Could you add init.d support to the rom or fix it? I see that there is a placeholder for scripts and there is one script, but it's not executed on boot (with 755 permissions).

This is absolutely the smoothest 4.0+ ROM I have ever used. Might switch to CM10.1 though for more features.

Oh jeez... Either I had a total brain fart and completely missed the link or it got posted anywhere from the time I posted it to the catching up of 14+ hours of sleep (I only slept 7 hours across 3 days LOL), but I guess CM10.1 is already posted. I'll download it and see what's up. Thanks for not flaming me guys. I would've gotten the N4 but I'm not a big fan of LG (had countless bad hardware experiences) and my phone is somewhat last on my "to upgrade list", so thanks for everybody's help and keep up the good work! There's some top quality Münchner Bier mit your name on it once I get some disposable income

That is strange. Which recovery are you using? Don't use clockworkmod as they're always full of glitches and bugs. Don't use ROM Manager to flash ROMs either as they as well have glitches. I recommend doing everything in recovery. If you do have clockworkmod I recommend flashing 4ext as it has more features and can make your phone a little faster

Ok I just went ahead and installed it. This is exactly what I need for a ROM on my Desire Z! Thanks Flinny, and keep up the good work!
Now my experience with this ROM:
- I just fly trough my home screens and menu's, it runs fluently!
- When at stock speeds (so 1Ghz) I sometime run into problems booting up the settings. I just hangs there for 4+ seconds untill it actually shows the settings. Setting clockspeeds to 1,8Ghz fixes this most of the times, but it's something you might want to look into (Or don't, it's your ROM)
- The above also happens with some apps.
I don't run swap or any other optimization, so I don't know if it's my problem or a ROM problem, but if you want me to do some more testing just tell me what I need to do
Boot Loop
Thanks for the work, this is a great ROM, just thought I would pitch my issue I had.
Im currently testing an app and set the device to use 2g only as I wanted so see how quickly it pulled in my data on a slower connection. If you leave it in 2g mode and reboot it appears to get stuck in a boot loop.
Hope this is helpful.
Cheers

I doubt that has anything to do with the "2g" setting since the radio doesn't come on until after it is booted up. Maybe that application you're testing screwed something up?

The app is fine, I have been building it for a few weeks and runds fine on a nexus one, and a sapphire. I have tried flashing the 4.2.1 AOSP build and the CM10 build and exactly the same is happening.
Guess I'm just missing something :s

Do you think you could get a log of the reboot? Might help in figuring out why it is rebooting like that.

[Q] Which ROM? Or back to Stock for a fast phone

Hello
I have enjoyed having djolivier's JB ROM in my phone. But it is still so much slower than Stock. I need to be able to dial, text and search straight away. I have a class 10 SD, I'm using Int2Ext+ I don't have a lot of apps, I only partitioned 512MB to try and speed it up.
I upgraded to get the Gmail App with Primary Inbox etc. but Gmail is so slow I hardly use it
Do I need to go back to stock with Link2SD? Or Stock with Int2Ext+? Or is there a ROM out there that is really actually so fast that the app opens when you touch it - not 5 or 25 laggy seconds later?
This may not be the correct place for this - but I don't get straight answers on other sections of the forum.
Thanks in advance for your answers.
Chris
Hello. First of all I have to tell you that in my oppinion, the Wildfire S hardware is a bit weak, so you can't avoid the 5 laggy seconds for an app to open... But, I 'll tell you which roms are the fastest for me.
1. Stock. This is what I use. I like its performance, but I dislike it visually. I use a Sense 4 theme and live with it.
2. CM9. I my oppinion the fastest custom rom until now. It lacks one thing: Video recording. Someone could talk about the laggy video playback but Henry_01 modified some lib files in his MIUI port, and video playback is working there. So I replaced the libs in CM9 and it worked too. So If you don't care about video recording you can use this one.
3. JDevs upcoming update seems a lot promising to me, and this is what I'm waiting for to replace stock.
As for the scripts, in terms of speed:
Link2sd > int2ext+ >int2ext
I use stock android 2.3.5 Sense 2.1 with Link2sd.
This is what I think is the best, until now.
edit: I forgot the Cyanogenmod 10.1 by OWL project, it's good and fast too. But in my opinion cm9 is better, in terms of performance.

Thanks so much for your response. One follow up question. You're saying Link2SD is the best for speed? When I installed a JB rom without int2ext there was not enough memory to even start installing apps..... did I do something wrong? I don't want to go back to the days of uninstalling apps so I can update the ones with large memory etc.

You 're right. Link2sd worked succesfully only on GB and ICS for me too. You didn't do anything wrong, so use only int2ext(+) with JB.....

Would you mind linking to which CM9 ROM you would suggest? Trying to breathe some life into my phone again.

For me this is the best CM9 rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2245617&highlight=slimsandwich
As it is, it has 2 bugs: no camera recording and slightly buggy video playback. If you want, I can fix the video playback and provide it to you tomorrow.
Although, I would suggest that you wait for the next big project by the owl team, based on android 4.2.2.
edit: Better use this link to SlimSandwich, as here, in xda it's not the latest version posted: https://teamblueridge.org/projects/files/
Rom > Marvel > Slimsandwich-marvel
Or tell me to give it to you with working libs for video playback.
Thanks for the info. The problem with owls project is that WiFi tethering is and has been broken for a long time and I hardly see them fixing it. I'll try out slimsandwich. I'm mainly looking for a fast, responsive ROM, not many features.
