[Q] How to install new ROM w/o losing app configurations? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I have Titanium backup, but any time I recover apps/data, I often end up in a force-close storm, if not immediately, then eventually. I'd really like to get all my apps back in place without this issue whenever I install a new ROM. There's a whole lot of custom configuration that I have to repeat over and over again. What's worse is I'll first recover all apps/data w/ TB, and then it will work for some time, and then it breaks down into an FC storm and I end up having to install all the apps from market, and reconfiguring everything manually again. Then why did I pay for TB pro?!
What am I missing? Are some apps more prone to causing problems when recovering the old data into a fresh ROM?

I honestly never have your problems. Even data from GB to ICS.
My method is, restore missing apps with data. so that leaves only system apps left. And there isn't much configuration needed with those anyway in my experience.

hmm... that appears to have worked. I must have been reloading system data, and borking the databases by mixing old/new. Thank you very much, sir.
P.S.: Dat ass!

No matter what app you use to restore your list, just restore the apps only, don't restore the data as it usually does not work across different os versions. All you need to do after the apps restore is log into the ones with accounts.. The only time I have had FC issues is if I try and restore data from a previous is version..

Ive never relied on TB but i have used my backup root and i have reloaded apps just fine when it comes to data thats where you can run into FC. I know it sucks dude but when it comes to running ICS a clean install is the way to go apps included . Shortcuts give you problems always

Troubles with EK02

Hello!
Since Yesterday I tried install EK02 few times. Everything good until I'm restoring data. Then I'm getting reboots by itself every 2 or 3 minutes and I can feel the device getting very hot.
I have no idea what causing the problem. Well, maybe only one idea I have. It might be some apps which is not compatible with 2.3.6 and messes up everything.
Question. How can I find this app if I have more than 200 installed apps on the device?
Maybe somebody have this problem too? If yes, can we contact somehow and try to find what is going on?
I've installed only stock roms. Installed from scratch.
Please, guys, I really need your advice?
Thank you!
Are you restoring data from a 2.3.4 setup? Also, unless you go through and re-install the apps from the market individually, it may be hard to pinpoint the exact issue

Restoring system apps across different frameworks can cause undesirable results. I bet that's what your doing.
How many apps are you restoring. I found that if you have more than 50 apps on SD Card (apps2SD) it will cause hot reboots on EK02. This did not occur on EG30., I downgraded back to EG30 and kept the modem on EK02.
Does updating to EK02 remove your apps?
If you are using the OTA "patch" updates, no it won't remove any of your apps.
If you use the "full" EK02 updates, it'll remove the apps you have in /system but preserve the apps you have in /data (ie most of your apps)
Yep. And don't restore data.

I just started fresh and it took me about 45 minutes to get on a full EK02 setup and re-install all apps from the Market. If you take the time to start fresh, you will have less headaches in the long run

[Q] Working App for Backup when Switching Roms?

I've tried a couple of backup programs to restore all my data and apps when switching between roms and running into problems. I still haven't gotten one backup program to work yet.
I'm currently on ICS from the Skyrocket ported version I think. I've used TB and Backup to backup all my data and apps.
Luckily I've completely backed everything up using CWR.
Tried switching to Juggernaut rom and used the programs to restore all the data and apps and both programs ran into errors and I couldn't bring back any of my personal stuff.
I do also have a Google account so yes my contacts, calender, etc is backed up that way but it doesn't do the SMS, logs, etc.
I will say it, yes I have downloaded apps that aren't paid for but I doubt that's the issue that it's not working right for restoring. Never had issues with this on my iPhone before switching to my Galaxy S2 T-Mobile.
Any help as to why and how to get some app to work properly so I can switch Roms. This one sucks really bad IMO. There's no tethering, some apps don't work which I can't see anything not working on the S2, and it crashes too much for my liking.
Try titanium backup but remember. If you wipe your SD and internal memory it will be gone.
It could be some apps aren't compatible but all my apps worked.

I would suggest giving ROM Toolbox a shot... although I have never had any issues using Titanium Backup for what you are trying to accomplish. It sounds like something was corrupted during the initial backup process and that is what is preventing the restoration.

Restore apps using Advanced Restore in Clockwork?

Hey guys. I just wiped and upgraded from CM10 8/14 build to the 8/31 build. I always hate the arduous process of reinstalling apps (for some reason, the automatic restore of all apps from the Play Store has only happened once, I can never get it to happen consistently)
Anywho, I wiped, flashed the new build and gapps, and then rebooted and signed in. It decided not to auto-restore, so I decided to try and boot into Clockwork and do an Advanced Restore of only /data. Rebooted and I have all my settings and apps back perfectly fine. Is there a downside to doing this? It seems to have worked without an issue but I don't think I've seen people saying they do this regularly.
Also, does anyone know how to get the built in auto restore to work reliably? I have all the settings checked.
Thanks in advance.
I have done it numerous times that way, but as you go along, you will find that is not that reliable, use titatium or mybackup. Those always have better results. Either way is fine.

Titanium Backup is your friend! Its way more easier and you can transfer that folder from iPhone to phone. It makes life easier for us flashaholics.

Backing up several apps and restoring them, will cause FCs?

Hello all,
I am thinking of flashing another rom to my Desire (currently have: Cool3D Aces v5 - but there's a lot of lag).
I want to keep some of my applications with their settings and data..in example, handcent (messages, settings), poweramp (settings), ColorNote notes, any.Do notes and etc..
Which program will help me do that?
I think titanium backup might be perfect for my needs. After flashing the new rom, can I restore each one of these apps at the exact state they were?
Am I going to experience any force-closes?
Thank you for your time!
You won't have FC's but depending on rom you might get slowdowns. It is recommended to restore just apps without data.

there are several apps available which do the same thing, though i've never had a problem backing up and restoring apps with titanium
to restore them in the exact state, you have to restore app + data (again i've not had a problem with this). it should restore all your preferences, and also useful for things like games so you save your progress :victory:...
if this doesn't work, as above, just restore the app only, set everything else up manually (though this is not much different from downloading the app from scratch, sort of defeating the purpose of titanium)
i think titanium can now backup and restore sms as well, though not tried it. handcent may have the feature built in too.
do not restore system data with titanium, as it's very likely incompatible between roms, and that would cause FC's!
(backup your contacts through google if you haven't already)
I never had a problem in restoring user apps alongwith data. Saved me loads of homework everytime. If FC happens you can always clear that app data.
If you are moving from a gb rom to ICS or Jelly and restore app data it can cause issues. Moving from one gb rom to another is usually fine. I use my backup pro as I prefer it over titanium.
Thank you all for your replies!

For sms I am using sms backup and restore (great app!). For handcent what I really care is to save my customizations to the interface, like theme, fonts, etc..
What does system data contain? (an example?)
I am usually backing them up by exporting them to the sd as .vcf..

Is there going to be any problem as the rom I am using has A2SD functionality?
I just saw in this thread that there is also a "Dalvik.Cache To SD-EXT"..should I use it for now, to temporarily get more space?
Apparently davik on sd is a bit slower. I have had davlik on sd on several different roms and can honestly say I have never noticed a slowdown so go for it if you need the space.
You should be fine restoring if using A2SD. As mentioned earlier by handy if you get probs you might have to clear your app data. Worst case uninstall the problem app and re-install. If you get force close issues after restoring apps try fix_permissions.
I've got FCs when I restore a bunch of apps or all my apps with Titanium. My solution was to remember what apps did FC and restore them one by one with Titanium, et voila no more FCs
Don't know why this happens, but as long as I now know a solution for this I am quite happy

Titanium Backup Issues

OK so I'm not sure what exactly is going on but whenever I flash my rim to do testing and whatnot I make a nandroid, do a full wipe, flash rom, gapps and then kernel, then reboot, let sit for about 10 mins, and then go through the setup, my data works completely fine, no drops in connection or anything, I can download apps on 4g even, so I downloaded titanium Backup and set it up, but whenever I restore my apps, just my apps only, no system data or app data the restore completes and then I don't a reboot and then my data no longer works, I've double checked the apn and nothing is out of the ordinary, it has to be titanium Backup because I've tried different kernels, different roms and still the same issue, does anyone have any idea what might cause this?

Tibu is not the panacea it's made out to be. Don't do a batch restore. Only restore the apps you really need. It's much better to use Google to restore your apps.

Well that is a matter of opinion. Using google to restore apps will always give you the latest versions of the apps. And that is often not a good thing. (I have 6 apps right now that I dont want updated because the newer version is crappier) Google isnt real good with restoring app data either.
There is nothing wrong with restoring using titanium for apps and data. The only place it shouldn't be recommended is for restoring system settings or data. That is where you get version/rom incompatibilities.

I always use TB to restore my apps. Never had a issue. Always use batch restore and restore only apps and data. Not sure what's going on but I ONLY use it to restore apps. What exactly are you pressing during your restoration process? I only restore missing apps with data in the scenerios. Never had I had any issues. perhaps try restoring missing apps AND data. this is what I do. Works every time without issue. Problem might lie in the fact your not restoring apps and data. Give it a shot. Let me know. It should work perfectly for you. Does for me always. Your not restoring data this is likely your issue. so during restoration press " restore apps AND data" this should solve the issue.
