Grey signal bars all the time? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hey guys. Ever since i flashed a rom i been getting grey signal bars 24/7 not sure why. Even on stock now. Strange thing is my girlfriend has the same phone but gets full signal.
Can someone tell me wtf has happen? I can still recieve messages and calls but.

It means one of your Google services isn't connected or synced. Some of the usual culprits are GMail sync or Google Talk.

Gray signal bars mean that Google Cloud to Device Messaging service is not working on the phone. If your Market and GMail - for example - also don't work then the problem is in your user account. But if Market and GMail both work and you have gray signal bars, then as I said above, your Google Cloud to Device Messaging is failing, which means that gTalk does not work and push notifications from Google does not work (Gmail notifications included).
What to do about it? I wish I knew. I've reset my phone twice because of the problem and I'm hoping that 4.0.4 has this bug fixed.
But since you flashed your ROM, it might be a problem with whatever you flashed your ROM with.

I have read on some threads that the grey bars can also be caused by too low a CPU clock speed or too much undervolting. However, since you are experiencing it also in the stock ROM, then I can only reiterate martonikaj's suggestion.

Ok so i cant just sync gmail ( dont even use it ) or what ever else to get my signal bars back?
Still get calls ect but kind of annoying when im out .

check that your apn stetting are correct, if they are you should get blue bars.

i cant get blue bars on my office cube which i find weird. i get the grey "h" and i can still download apps, surf, etc.. just no push email from gmail, and no syncing.
any ideas on why this happens? this is through cellular connection and not wifi. i can make calls and download apps... just no sync and push lol.
what makes it more weird.. is that the wifi connection i can get in my cube doesnt allow me to get blue bars either.
even turning on airplane mode, and switching it back off does nothing. once i step out of the building... im all back to the usual blue bars.
im on the 27th floor if that makes any difference.

Try flashing several other radios until you find something thats good for you thats how i fixed mines
In fact the only radio that works for me its xxkl1, rest doesn't

Recieving MMS..

Hey guys. So im realizing when people send me pictures. You have to click the download button. Well when I click it. It does not download and I can not recieve the pictures. In fact, it doesnt even download. Any way to fix this?

Just realized my pics arent sending either.. what goes on here?
Just sent and received a picture message(With Wifi on). Sounds like it might just be a problem with your phone/connection
**Your phone should Automatically Turn on Mobile Data when Sendin or Receiving MMS Messages while Wifi is active. If this is not happening you may want to Call Customer Care.**
Another thing that may be affecting this is bad Signal

Same thing is happening to me. Sending and receiving pics only works when 3g\4g is on rather than Wifi

This has always happened with me with every phone i had. Including from different carriers. I always thought this was normal.

Quite normal. Of course Mobile Data has to be on. No phone can send a message through wifi and have it delivered through the carrier
Edit
However, even with WIFI on your phone should start and stop mobile Data to send and receive MMS messages. If yours is not doing this, then you may want to call Customer Care.
Another possible reason for why this is happening is that you may have a very weak or bad signal.

Why you should turn off MMS auto retrieve

I've learned my lesson. Lol.

Do you have a lot of people send you pictures? I have never had an issue with the messaging system using that much cpu.

I had data off and my friend sent me a picture of clouds for some reason. Really important. Then that happened.

That's why it happened cause you had data off. Messaging knew it needed to download a pending image but couldn't, so just sat there waiting indefinitely.
That's strange, I would think that he messaging app would just wait until you activated your data again. Not constantly trying to download the picture.

New thread: Why you shouldn't have data off! :silly:
Yeah I see a lot of people that have problems when the turn off data. I understand it saves a little battery but it causes a lot of issues.

Some carriers (T-Mobile) don't use the regular data connection for MMS. Until I got this phone I did not have a data plan and still received MMS like any other text message.
I have auto retrieve off and if I don't download the mms right away it still keeps my phone awake
Next time, tell em to email pics. Lol

Yeah! Why does anyone use MMS anyway? lol
Maybe he didn't have a smartphone. But even basic phones can email these days.
Hope this thread is still alive, I didn't wanna make another topic.
So I have my data off all the time because it saves SOOO much battery, every now and then someone will send me a pic though, I have auto retrieve on, but when I get the notification, and turn on my data, it won't download the image until they send me another picture. :/
would having auto retrieve off fix this? Or is this some other kind of issue?

[Q] Can't receive MMS while on WiFi

Just like the title says. I'm using Wicked's V.5 with UVLI8. I've looked at other threads with other devices and I've seen no resolution.
Any ideas?
Thanks,

have you ever been able too? b'c on past phones while on wifi the mobile network would kick in to let the mms go Thru or come in then go back to wifi when it was done
Check if wifi calling is on. If it is turn it off and it should work.

Seems like a work-around. I'll test, but still, it's a pain to have to turn wi-fi calling off and on to receive a MMS. Why wouldn't I just turn of wi-fi for the moment till the MMS comes thru?
You can do that too. But for many its good enough to be a fix... If you're like me and don't use wifi calling.
I know it sucks, but at least you'll know what's causing it. Maybe if enough people complain they'll fix it.
I've heard some 3rd party apps allow mms to send over wifi and therefore will work with wifi calling.
Tmobile only allows mms to send over data connection.

Are you sure? I get pix all the time at home and I'm showing 100% without signal. 0 bars but still the triangle. This is with Wi-Fi calling always on. Stock and xquizit.
Sometimes I do get the "data roaming" lost connection bs and lose Wi-Fi calling.

Similar thing happens to me. Wifi get stuck or conflict with Data signal.
I always turn Network Data off 1st, then turn WiFi on - once WiFi fully loaded => turn data on. That way it prevent wifi conflict. Works for me.

You might be partially right lol. There was a thread about turning mobile data off and that killed MMS over WiFi. All I know is that I'm able to send and receive MMS at home and I have no cell signal. There's no way the MMS are going through the cell tower. Technically speaking I do have some sort of signal. Even though it says no signal it's a blank triangle and not the circle with a line through it. It's enough to register with the network I guess...
I think I need sleep too. Turning WiFi off gave me the no signal circle. So iono wtf.
I know this has something to do with the custom ROM I'm using (Wicked V.5). I've never seen this issue, and I've been using Androids for 2 years. Even before I flashed Wicked, I had no issues on the same device on the same WiFi network.
Xquizit xD works fine for me.

MMS not coming through

I have continued issues with receiving picture texts.... I almost always have to tell the sender to send it once more for it to come through. I've also noticed my H bars turning from Blue to Grey when this happens.... Any ideas as to what could be causing this? At&t looks dumbfounded every time I go in or call about this....
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
TBH, it sounds like an ATT issue.
I know the common thought is that grey bars means lost connections to Google, but when that happens to me, I have always lost network connectivity.

Remove your Google account then add again. Reboot.
Edit, custom ROM? I went back to stock because of many random issues since 4.1.2 was officially released.

mms is either apn related problem or just bad coverage (no good data in area)
you can google different apn settings to try
I have to use go smd to view mms depending on what ROM I'm using.

Uncheck auto retrieve and manually download them when they come. ThTs what I do on my vzw gnex as they sometimes get stuck if it have it auto and don't finish downloading.

Cm10 and CM10.1

What is the trick to get the mobile data to kick in. The signal bars show signal but they are greyed out, not blue like when connected. I tried updating profile and prl but cannot connect even tried over WiFi but no luck. Sprint GNex GA02 modems.
I never had this problem with my OG Epic4g

No will not connect.but not getting 3g services im stuck on 1x flash any other rom and I'm good sprint profile updates signal is there all blue lit up

The pick is not of the issue but that is what the bars look like this us pa3 with mobile data off
Try different radios. Fh05 work much better than ga02 for me
Ya in my area I don't have 4g yet so I rely on 3g for everything
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Happened to me on BB7 and the fix was to change from LTE/CDMA to just CDMA (or vice versa) uncheck mobile data wait 15 or so seconds then turn it back on and then if/when I saw the 3g icon Id update profile then prl.
I have tried that, and mine still isn't blue. I switched from TouchWiz to CM10 last week and at first, the signal bars and WiFi indicator were both blue. Now they are grey. And yes, my Sync is on.

I worded that a little weird. At first, when I started using CM10, the indicators were blue. Now, they are grey.
