I think he's talking about the RAM. Android manages memory different than OS X or Windows. Full is actually good. People are always going overboard with task killers trying to free up RAM. Android will free up RAM as necessary, so you really shouldn't ever have to worry about it. Unlike Windows when it gets full it puts memory into swap on the HDD slowing it down. Android will just quit the app, because you haven't used it in a while.
Just for reference I have 246MB available on CM7 with a fresh boot. After using it a few hours, I generally have about 90MB free on average.

Hi every one. how could i turn the ram to original space. means 512mb?
My phone is rooted.
Is there anyway to do it?

No...the only usable ram is only 368mb the rest is the the system etc camera,gpu and more...

I'm not sure,but its impossible to get 512mb ram...most I can get is 220mb free ram =\

You can't get more RAM than 330MB or so, the rest is for the radio and possibly other system stuff. Why is it a problem though ? Typically (running 2.3 at least) there should be lots of free RAM.

That's very interesting because I saw 512MB too but now I have 368MB. Don't remeber when was it probably before rooting and flashing. Is this correct that task manager reports only 368MB as total memory?
Now I have Virtuous Affinity 2.05 and HBOOT from virtuous page. Is this could be the reason?

I always get around 250mb ram rarely 310mb :O

If its the value in About Phone - Hardware Info, i think that can be set to show anything you want in the build.prop file. The most accurate method to check RAM value and free RAM is using "free" in Terminal Emulator.

Dunno for your, but for me it's hell. After boot's over, i have about 100mb of RAM avalaible and as it gets around 40mb, phone gets very laggy (like, call starts 2minutes after pressing call button...)
That happens quickly of course, since most apps use around 20mb (browser much more)... After that, only thing to do is reboot... And that take some time! And it can takesSo is there a way to "improve" that?

What I have started doing in my routine is when I am done using an app instead of just pressing the home button I press the back button until I am all the way out of the app. Also I don't use a task manager anymore since it seemed to hurt my phone more then help.

I'm on doomlord kernel v14 with zRAM activated and Xperia s rom and when I'm not listening to music the ram free is around 200mb if you can I recommend you to flash that Rom doesn't has lot of internal apps and when flashing the firmware it gets a lot of internal memory free
Other would be that you buy ram manager pro from market its a very helpful app when to ram managing is related

I use the v6 spercharger script and I have an average of 180mb free ( not when playing games)...try it just search the forum

Ups that Rom is only for GSM buy try that app or v6 supercharger script both helps a lot

I use v6 supercharger and titanium backup to move most of my apps to sdcard. I usually hover around 190-200mb free. And that is with all gameloft games, shadowgun, and about a total of 40+ games. I am also on stock Verizon rom with all bloat deleted via titanium. No lag anywhere. Everything is silky smooth.

Try doing a clean flash and delete all the stock crap apps, then try with Ram manager, on my play i feel that supercharger is not helping in games, niether on battery life, i will try using zram from doomkernel.

i think about your problem with ram
(every method need root, some recovery too)
U can make swap file/partition if u have enough fast sdcard (i heard that min. is class 4, but more=better). Partition can be created using recovery i think (I never need this). Swap file can be created using a-swapper or Swapper for Root - I've newer used it too

Why the hell do so many people ***** about the lack of this and that? You had to known what you were getting into BEFORE you bought the damn thing! If not your just a retard and should sell your phone and buy something you'll be happy with or just deal with it

yes flashing custom kernel is a good option to aid in that aspect.

I switched from an OG droid so having 512 mb of ram is a dream in my opinion. Lol. I appreciate what I have and that is a sweet gaming phone that cost me $35 because I got the phone free and only had to pay the CA tax on the full unsubsidized price of the phone. I love my phone to death! Sure I could do with more ram but it works just fine for me as is ^_^

Exactly! Its not the absolute best but it is great none the less, it just seems like alot of people get the thing then come straight here to ***** about what it doesn't have. Makes me wonder where their mind was when they bought it or got it on contract

have tried to use the true ancestor rom?? I use the version 1.4b, and I have alrederor of 250 mb of free ram with facebook, and browser active player reaches 200 mb!!

System memory

I've been curious about this for quite some time now. Our phone has 768mb of total ram space. I've noticed AOSP roms allow 602mb to be used and Sense gives 573mb. Is it possible to substitute system memory for ram enabling more free ram for our device?

Ok I know "x" amount of ram is required to run a rom. What I wanna know is can any of that be transferred into say the system memory so that instead of having only 573mb of 768mb we could have something like say 625mb of our 768mb? I guess I should of clarified earlier.

Like for example, virtual memory in windows, it uses the hard drive to hold running processes, though it may be slower....it works....sort of lol

Yes like vm in windows. So it wouldn't speed up our phones if this was done? That is what I was trying to accomplish by all of this in the first place. I figured if I was able to make the RAM larger in size overall that would in turn allow bigger apps to run smoother. I know there's a lot more at play like processor speed and kernel but its just a thought

My knowledge of linux is very limited, but I think that you are thinking of it too much like Windows. In Windows more free ram means better performance. That is because Windows doesn't kill processes that aren't being used when ram is needed, instead it uses vm to allow the program to run.Android will kill processes that aren't in use if additional ram is needed so vm is not necessary. This means that performance isn't really effected by free ram.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong here.

No worries. I think most people here think the same way because most of us use Windows. I wouldn't have known differently if I hadn't read it previously on here. That's the same reason why task killers are bad.

I'm in love with Linux 2 home computers run it and my laptop duel boots Ubuntu and windows 7. Great combo. Never owned a Mac probably never will. Also haven't messed with cron ( is that right) in Linux/android) but hear good things.

Android puts background processes that arent running in the foreground in cache memory, that way it's not eating up ram like if it was still running but since its in the cache, if you open the program though it will still come up quickly since it is cached, only certain programs that are frequently used are like that though...

[Q] Free up Ram

I'm running AOKP build 5 and I was wondering what's the best way to clear up some ram on my phone, make it run faster. I close apps when I'm not using it and I'm on stock kernel...maybe different kernel....? Any advice would be nice. Thanks in advance.

The topics don't correlate. When Android needs more RAM, it'll close applications automatically - that being said, your speed issue isn't RAM related.

fast reboot is a nice app to use. its kinda like a reboot but without rebooting. it frees up ram. android might free up ram on its own when needed, but it does not do a good enough job, no matter what other people say. fmr memory cleaner is also a nice app to use.

Pretty much said it all. That said unused ram isn't going to make your phone faster. If anything having more apps cached in the ram will. Unused ram is wasted ram Imo.
