Yep – the sales of that underpowered, underappreciated and mostly unsubsidized Android smartphone are exploding around the emerging world. To the tune of 1.75 million devices shipped per month (which is the sales rate comparable to Galaxy S2). And it’s no surprise, when you can get Galaxy Y for something like $120 without a contract. Add to that the sales of its QWERTY brother Galaxy Y pro and other low-end Samsung Androids – and the total sales number for cheapies this quarter may be somewhere between 8 and 10 million.

Dat sales!, but it's incredible how the yPhone have that amazing sells and here we still can't get a functional cyanogenrom!
Charlie
We still have some pretty awesome roms available though for the Y, even if we don't (yet) have any official or unofficial Cyanogenmod:
Creeds' ROM v2.0, v2.1 update and v2.5 which has the unique 'Swipe to remove notification' which no other custom ROM has on this phone.
And ChobitsDigitalis v1, which is the rom I'm using, and has certain Cyanogen elements to it.
There are a number of good roms available. There've been threads where people claim to be porting Cyanogenmod 7, but we're still waiting...

One peculiar problem I have seen here that most of the Developers don't have this phone. Nearly every developer starts his thread saying this statement that they don't own this phone. This makes testing difficult. Instead of the developer testing and debugging he has to rely on the users. This makes the task doubly difficult.
Whereas in S2 forums hardly any developers states that he/she doesn't own this phone hence development is very fast there.
Hmm....

You are half right. First we have to get a good custom kernel to port CyanogenMod into it. once kernel is developed 60% of work would be done
I am using Merruk_Technology Kernel overclocked to 900 MHz but it is in beta stage as wifi does not work with it

so let us also give the credits to the one who provided us the guide...
He means no other custom rom for this phone. As in unique for SGY. We all know this isn't a first. Lol.

Any chance of a tasty Ice Cream Sandwich please for the Hero ?
thanks to elelinux for a great rom
should be possible after the release of the source code (maybe next month?).
without the source it looks for me that it won't be possible to boot the emulator image on our hero, because it is compiled for armeabi-v7a (snapdragon cpu) only.
thank you for your post

That's different. SDK is not kernel source. That's why most honeycomb Ports aren't complete. No source was released.

Maybe someone can get it to run. but I don't get my hopes up if I where you. if you look at 2.3 how that runs on the hero comparing to 2.2 and mostly 2.1. And 4.0 even more stuffed then I guess not
touch wood, 2.3.7 is working well for me on my Hero (dont really to upgrade just to get Android 4.0)
But keeping an eye on some HTC Desires on ebay nonetheless

I thinks so too.
I remember when on this forum we were discussing about porting Froyo 2.2. on the Hero...lol...
Its not long since the GB rom's were considered too fat for the hero. Look at us now..... mines has never been so quick.

I completely agree with Prof Peach. GB was slow on first releases and now it flies so maybe it's hope for 4.0 too when the sources come out and them maybe it will boot on our Hero after the devs cast their magic.
yea, but don't forget the one and only honeycomb rom for gsm hero which JieeHD (I think) created from the sdk...
YES it was from sdk and so it was a miracle it ran at all, but it was SO slow that you couldn't even try the UI features of the rom. No the hardware didn't work at all, no data, wifi, etc, and that is all because it came from the sdk. That wasn't the purpose of the sdk build. It was just to play with the honeycomb UI, but even then the UI should have run alright if it was ever going to run on the hero.
However that rom (which I still have kicking around somewhere) showed me just how honeycomb was clearly made to run on much more powerful hardware than even gingerbread requires.
So I personally will be very surprised if it works well enough for daily use.
But then I'm running a gingerbread rom that is fast enough for daily use and perfectly stable... and I bet against that every happening back in teh day LoL.
I've been wrong before, and I hope you guys can prove me wrong again. I'm always happy to be wrong when I'm being pessimistic!
...
To upgrade or not to upgrade? This is the big question for the android community!!!!
It will run on the hero, but since phones are getting bigger, i think it's gonna be kind of weird to run 4.0... We will have to see it ported firts
As far from what i see and what the google guys reported...every phone that can run GB can run ICS... so that means that there can't be a big problem to run the os, and since the nexus S will receive the update, that means that there is a way to disable the on screen buttons...
For the moment we stick with what we have !!! And we have to THANKS the devs that keep this phone alive. As for the part with upgrading to a new phone, i think we have to wait for the next gen of processors (quad core) or buy phones like nexus S that now are on slim prices
PS: since i got my tablet, i'm not so much into getting a new phone
Stefan
yea, tablets are awesome. Same here - I've used many android tablets and my employer supplies apple devices for my dev work at one company.
Tablets are awesome if you truly embrace them and buy whatever options you need to use them as virtual laptops effectively.
Agree with dkelley...if you have places where you can use them, it's better to have one...i use mine all the time, from movies and finishing with reading stuff.
I have to admin i was thinking on to buy a desire Hd / Nexus S...but not so shure
Stefan
yeah i love my Hero to bits, cost me £50 with Android 1.6 pre installed on it from some guy at work lol.
Whilst i can appreciate its an old handset etc etc, its running gingerbread like a dream, so would love to see the 'consolidated' release of 4.0 on there, i feel google will have dropped a legacy beat if only snapdragon cpus are supported.
admins feel free to move this to the Q&A sub-forum if required

For me the Hero is a phone. and nothing more. It is a little smarter phone then my moms. She can text and call. I can do that and I can also send mail check agenda and navigate some. That is what I use my phone for. If I need more then I will use my laptop anyway. So the Hero with some easy rom is fine for me.
Android 4.0 will bring problems and stuff that I will never use anyway. If you look at most devs on the Hero forum. They are good porters and breakers of things. I am the last one, a breaker XD There are still a half hand full of devs for the Hero.
I think the CDMA will have 4.0 sooner then the Hero. But that is just my oppinion. If they ever get it...
And is there an upgrade for sgs2?

I've read a news article on Pulse that this phone won't have much developer support due to Samsung keeping some files locked out for developer support, and that Cyanogenmod won't be developing on this phone due to that.

I don't understand the situation fully, but it sounds like Samsung has committed to releasing the source, so I am hoping that means it will get Cyanogenmod and good dev support.

This might be a dumb question, I've just begun researching this but it concerns development. I'm considering jumping from my Verizon contract to AT&T for this phone, based on the virtual certainty that the Verizon version will have a locked bootloader. Are AT&T phones locked on a case by case basis, or is it already a given that this phone will release with devs able to mess with it? I don't want to play a waiting game like the S3 on Verizon despite their huge number of users.

Pretty much all I know is what I read on rootzwiki, but I thought that they were not going to drop all Samsung devices, but only the ones that used Exynos CPU's due to inadequate source or documentation or something. But then I think Samsung has committed to releasing this, so hopefully that means Cyanogenmod will not drop them anymore, but I haven't heard anything official.

I have to admit a lot of the features they added do seem genuinely useful, but I still think I would give them up for Cyanogenmod.
It is my understanding (from what I have read about the Note 1, etc) that android natively supports stylus input since ICS, and so it should be able to still work in Cyanogenmod. It is just that there are very few apps that really make use of it besides the ones from Samsung, Hopefully this will improve over time though.
I am with you guys, I personally will root the device and debloat it for now... But stock rom right now seems to be very nice..lol...
We will have alot of great roms coming out either way with or without cm support. I know a couple devolpers coming here shortly and there work is awesome.
There will be plenty of support. I will be working on a few things myself once I get the device. I helped start the CM development in the original note.
And the reason why we run AOSP vs all the craptastic useless stuff Samsung adds its because I personally like vanilla Google. Samsung changes to much. Android in stock form is beautiful. Just my opinion not trying to start a flame war.
If I run stock it will be stripped down deodexed and debloated likke a mofo.
If I decode to build an device tree and attempt to build CM I will. With the open support from Samsung it won't be difficult.
I know of a few developers coming this way also we will have plenty of support I'm sure

Normally I agree, and my S3 i definitely agree. But this phone is built around samsungs incorporation of the s-pen and related features. If AOKP roms ignore the s-pen, theyre useless to me.. why even get this phone then?
I think the most popular roms on this phone will be stock based, debloated and feature rich roms, much like Ariel rom for the ATT Galaxy s3 out now.

Touchwiz is hideous.
Don't get me wrong, Samsung has done some great things with the multitask and S-pen, but AOSP Jellybean makes Touchwiz look like a featurephone UI from 2003.

This is exactly how I feel about it. I will root it, but I'm going to take my time about flashing a custom ROM. I want the full functionality of that stylus as designed - as an old Palm girl, this is one of the main reasons I'm getting the Note 2. That plus the excellent GPS - coming from a woefully awful Captivate GPS. I had a Garmin iQue 3600, the Palm OS GPS unit, and am frankly spoiled by that integration. If only Garmin hadn't given up like that.....
https://github.com/MiCode/
The project call patchrom,we can just make a build with the cm rom or our official sense rom.
I want to hava a try but i have not learned to do it.
There are so many miui fans still using inc.
So, any developer can try this out?
Tiny? Pons?
However, thanks for your cm10.1!
Due to me having to build on a build bot, then downloading a compiled ROM taking over 2 hours on my slow internet, I don't see me trying this right yet. Or at all. I'm not too fond of MIUI; I prefer CM, obviously. Plus I glanced at some of the code and, most (all?) of the README's are "This is a place holder, please fill in real text when you add stuff." for the past 3 years. I'm not too big of a fan of undocumented ROMs, and they don't even really have a basic readme. I also didn't see a readily available inc device tree, though admittedly I didn't look too hard, so this might have to be a port, than official compiling.

Hello friends,
I am considering to buy a Note 2 to replace my main device as Sensation's touchscreen failed upon me.
I have few questions and I will appreciate your valuable replies.
1. Is Note 2 hardware good enough for next 2 years? I don't play much games and mostly Subway Surfer, Real Racing, MC4. Maybe half hour a month. But I want to be able to run all upcoming Android versions (atleast till developers support this device).
2. I read about SDS somewhere few months before. Is every Note 2 affected? I can't afford to have an expensive paper weight.
3. Does Note 2 have some dual-boot kernel?
4. Any ROM with Note 3 features esp that circle popup thing (or its my wishful thinking ) ?
5. Otherwise which would be recommended Custom Stock ROM, Recovery and kernel (dual-boot is definitely preferred)?
6. Any other major hardware bugs?
7. Btw, could someone guide me as how to check if I decide to buy my friend's old Note 2? How I check it for faults esp hardware? I am getting tempted as I could save some good money for other accessories
If there is something else which hasn't come to my mind but is important please feel free to add. I would be much obliged
Thank you so much !!!

1. Im fairly sure the phone will be extrwmwly adequate 2 years from now (obviously no one knows for sure) but the quad core processor is very capable of playimg the ges you mention. Although there are devices out that already have octo core processors, they all are only usong 4 at any one time and the differences are bare noticable at best.
2. As long as you are getting your phone from an authorized dealer then you shouldnt worry about SDS as that comes with older models and should come with a warrenty that would allow for replacement (one way or another)
3. The guy that built the (either S2 or S3) dual boot kernal was receiving donations to help him fund the tools to make it back in Jan-Mar of this year and I havent heard anything since... nor have I seen anything about it anywhere (atleast not on TMO LTE version. Youre more than welcome to search around a bit yourself)
4. Yes and No... there is but Team E (or whoever) has certain restrictions (really just permission only use) on alot of the Note 3 features that have been made for the Note 2... not really stone walling development, just protecting their hardwork and asking for proper credits, no alterations without reporting back to them, etc... it will be in every new rom eventually
5. Really a matter of who you ask and personal preference. I myself love Ptmr3s Jedi series (Master for TMO WiFi calling or X for other Note 2) but thats because 4.4 isnt out and I love the functionality that TW has for the particular device (samsung hasnt open sourced their SPen, MultiWindow, etc) so theyre not on non-TW BASED roms.. if you prefer AOSP, AOKP, or Paranoid Andriod, or PACMAN, etc than there are carious roms to pick and choose from. As for Kernal... each rom will provide (or users will post kernals that are compatible (I.e. dont use just any kernal on any rom... only what has been tested and proven).
6. Nothing major that isnt morw than an isolated incident at best... obviously of roms are newer or in nightly stages there will be bugs but nothing really hardware related... should mention sometimes on calls, the person your talking to will here themselves (echo) but that is sorta sparatic at best and most roms its not that bad and nothing major (again not really hardware related)
7. eMMC bug checker app. Download from play store, (look up the thread on here) and it will show you what to look for
Hope this helps...
Ultimately the Note should be continued to be developed for some time and able to withstand another 2 years of updates and new handsets. Already have 4.4 on TMO (omnirom - though not a daily driver) and carriers are pushing out stock 4.3 ASAP

So if I am buying new deice I wouldn't have that SDS bug. Right?
I am little surprised (and disappointed) that a powerful device like Note 2 doesn't have dual-boot functionality. That way I could run both Stock (I love various TW functionalities) and AOSP/AOKP/PA, etc

Yes it's working verry good. I am using DN3 as we speak and it's a daily driver for me. The rom does not have yet note 3 camera and have a few minor bugs but nothing serious.

It´s getting old and it shows now.. Not top quality either, so many annoying little things, so yes!
Didn't lost hope
Still, with Sony JB (rooted), the best phone I ever had.
It's getting old as every phone does, so where's the problem. If you like to have more support on firmware you should have bought a Google phone. Didn't know that, I did at the time a bought my Sony.
I didn't expect more from a 2012 phone.. comparing to other phones released that year our Nozomi devices are quite good, we just didn't receive proper support from neither Qualcomm (abandoned our Scorpion CPUs) and Sony (1 year to upgrade to Jelly Bean with more bugs than anything and stoped support using the lack of drivers excuse).. Today we have the same as almost every mid-range phone, but with a good camera.
720p display, 12.1MPx Camera, 1750mAh Battery, dedicated camera button and the best of sony: we can use ports from newer xperia devices. I also have a Samsung Galaxy S II i9100 and I can say that our Xperia S is way superior. In the SGS2 Android Development section there are almost no ports from newer Galaxy devices, only AOSP/CM ROMs. The ROMs that claims to have SGS4/SGS5 features are mostly lies and I can confirm that. I flashed some of those ROMs and the features they "ported" are just copies they made themselfs, not the actual port itself. I don't know if they don't port it because Touchwiz is crap or because they can't do it... but after all a SGS2 won't run SGS5 apks, but a Xperia S easily runs Xperia Z2 apks.

can you give me a link for your kernel TX-Core Ultimate Kernel 5.9
If you just buy it recently and with the standar price i bought 2 year ago, then that's a hope to lost
I mean i stick with my Xperia S and still think it one of the best around, and if you buy it couple years ago then why lost hope? Just need a stable rom for calling and play some good game? it's still work perfectly
I's just recently start to using rom cook and the experience is more amazing so why to compare it to the new phone and lost hope ?
Just move on if you want, if you want hard enough you will find a way to get out of the *lost hope* phone :silly:
No I'm not. Try the OpenSEMC-U ROM. It's fast like hell, and stable enough for daily use. But this is the last stable and fast ROM after the offical. Our's phones has got an old SoC (Snapdragon S3). The Qualcomm has stopped developing drivers for this SoC early. I just call this SoC "Blacksheep". It has so much power inside, but without good drivers...
