Hi,
I am using a T-mobile vario 2 in the UK. I recently flashed the radio rom to version 1.43 and replaced the operator rom with the official dopod wm6 rom. Most things are working ok but I have run into a few problems; hopefully someone here can help me.
First (minor) problem when the phone is first turned on it asks you to select a country. UK is not on the list, only countries in south pacific area. Does this prevent me from connecting properly to my local provider? ie do I show up as roaming?
Next problem is that I can't receive my voicemail. I phoned T-Mobile to check the number and setup etc but everything is correct. The phone just tells me "The number you have dialed is not recognised" or something to that effect.
Finally my phone frequently looses its data connection. When you open internet explorer a popup message shows saying: "Unable to connect to network for an unknown reason..." I checked all of the settings and they are ok. The only thing that fixes the data connection is to reset the phone. Probably I am also dropping calls whilst the phone is in this state.
So can anyone help? I think it is most likely the radio rom at fault but it could be related to not being able to select the correct county.
Thanks for your help

try radio 1.47 which comes with the dopod wm6
Ok I followed the suggestion and have upgraded to radio 1.47 but I still get the same problems. At least I have only checked the voicemail so far but get the same message. It actually says "You have dialed an incorrect number..."
Any other suggestions?
Download and install the provider Cab settings for your provider.
Search the wiki for more information
I have already done this. The settings are correct.
Hmm, thanks for the advice... now sms doesn't work either. PS. whilst flashing radio rom I also changed to JJ's black satin.
Please can somebody suggest a radio rom that is known to work well on T-Mobile in the UK. ie. no dropped calls, GPRS, 3G and HSDPA all working, voicmail and sms working, I don't care about video calling.
Thanks
Matt
Mat,
I am on TyTn and I had the same problem after installing Dopod WM6 version + 1.47 radio - on the second day majority of programs requiring internet connection were returning in message 'Unable to connect due to unknown reason...'. Even Wi-Fi was not responding. Only Resco Radio was working ?!?!
Solved this by removing the GRPS Internet settings and updating them manually.
As to the dropping calls, did you try to switch to GSM (instead of 3G). This is a common problem if your 3G covergae is bad?
Since upgrading the radio rom from 1.43 to 1.47 I have not had the "Unable to connect.. for an unknown reason" message. So I guess this was either due to some screwed up settings before, or some bug that has been fixed between releases.
I don't know how to switch from 3G to GSM but I am not convinced that this is the problem since my push email works just fine.
Incidentally I have noticed that my phone seems to default to 3G but as soon as I open a page in explorer it jumps into HSDPA, once it finishes it goes back to 3G. Is there a way to make it stay in HSDPA or is this a bad idea for some reason?
With the above observation in mind I could be wrong in thinking 3G was not my problem. Perhaps my phone jumps into HSDPA to receive push email.
So how do you force GSM or even GPRS over 3G?
Please forgive my ignorance.
Matt
Ok found a setting in com manager/phone/bands/ changed from auto which was putting me on umts to gsm. Was this what you meant? I have gone from 2 bars of 3G and 2 bars of HSDPA when in use to full bars of GPRS. Internet browsing was definitely faster with HSDPA but do you think I should be able to receive texts now? I know I have missed some and they still have not come through.
This is weird, after changing to GSM my htc home plugin reports 2 unread text messages but when I open up the SMS/MMS folder ther are no messages at all.
???
I find the best radio rom for Tmobile UK is 1.27 - see the wiki.
For your voicemail, set the phone to dial your own number, it works.
Ive tried all the new radios and always go back to 1.27. I am currently running Schaps lates WM6 rom (3.57a I think)

Hi i'm on T-Mobile Uk Vario II currently using Black Satin & Radio 1.43 3g, hsdpa, sms, mms, voicemail all working.
Can only suggest reflash rom with somthing like Schaps 3.57a use his operator setting tool to set T-Mobile settings and use radio 1.43 and see what happens.
Cheers
It would appear that WM6 dialer strips the leading zero from the T-Mobile voicemail number +440507... giving +44507...
I have not figured out how to fix it yet.
For the voicemail thing, the dialer does indeed strip out the leading zero on the voicemail number - I spent hours trying to fix this and in the end, it was easy - just put an extra zero in the number (in network services) ;-)
I use Black Satin with Radio 1.47.00.10 and have no problems whatsoever but I'm still evaluating - I don't know if I've tried 1.27 yet so I think I'll look into that and report back the comparison.
You say you were having problems with data "unable to connect..." - I used to have this a lot and invariably, it was because my conection had somehow developed a proxy server - turned this off and it work after that (it usually happened after I synced it with my work computer)
Could the SMS messages be on your SIM or something? Not had this problem but have a look in SIM manager see if that can find anything.
The thing about HSDPA is that it isn't on all the time - the phone will stay in 3G until you or your phone initiates a data connection, then HSDPA will kick in for the duration of the connection then fall back to 3G - this is normal as your phone cannot receive calls and stuff while HSDPA is connected (I think - i'll look for clarification on this point - the phone will should drop the HSDPA when a call comes in).
Some people do report that data speeds etc seem faster when they mess with the band settings but I've not been able to confirm this and just leave it as it is.
If you don't get anywhere with your SMS problem, you could try the threaded apps that I've customised for t-mobile (links in my SIG) but be warned - any texts you have in your current SMS inbox will be inaccessible until you uninstall the threaded app. I'm using the WM6 one on mine at the moment and it works just fine for SMS and MMS.
Smiffy
Thanks for the replies guys!
I am now very happily running the 'normal' version of JJ's Black Satin rom and radio rom 1.48.
Everything seems to be working fine now. Adding the extra 0 into my voicemail number did the trick; so easy once you know how!
The data connection can still be slow occasionally. I think this is because if you have a weak 3G signal this overrides a stronger GPRS one. Sometimes the 3G signal is so weak it can't transfer any data and the phone just keeps trying in 3G rather than switching to the stronger GPRS signal which would work. This is easy the fix, just go into com manager and disable 3G (on the black satin rom at least).
Generally I am very happy and my device is finally working the way I wanted it to.
Once again, thanks for your help
Cheers

I use whats in my sig and it works well. I get the 3g/gprs battle at my house alot. Complain to tmobile regularly and they'll sort it out eventually.
Hi Folks,
I've had my SIMfree Desire for a few days now and since the off I've been having some problems with the 3G data connection.
No matter what app I'm in, though the signal meter shows I have a very strong 3-4 bar 3G connection, after a short initial burst of HSDPA the connection seems to just stall and hangs until I restart the connection. It does this in both my work and home cell zones some 40 miles apart so it doesn't appear to be a problem with the cell zone. Sometimes it'll clear and carry on quite quickly, other times I get bored of waiting.
It drives me nuts in the browser and Market where surfing becomes neigh on impossible. In other apps (Stocks, Friendstream/Facebook, News, Android keyboard, etc.) I can usually come back later and I may or may not be lucky.
Is anyone else experiencing this?
I am on Orange so I'd be grateful if someone who's on Orange with rock solid 3G performance could post/PM me their settings so that I can check mine - though I haven't messed with them.
Could an app be causing this?
Many thanks!

Update: From posts here, and the experience of a mate with a Desire on Vodaphone, it seems that many others are experiencing this problem regardless of network.
I've had all my settings checked by Orange Tech Support and though they made some changes they made absolutely no difference.
I emailed HTC about this yesterday but when I get home tonight I'll be following that up with a phone call. Can we all do the same so they actually realise it may be a problem with the phone itself?
Cheers All!
I have the same issue too with my Orange handset, thought i was in a bad area at the time but maybe not.... hmmmmm.....
I got this issue yesterday as well
I tried to browse the internet via 3G ... and it just stucked ... only the "up arrow" were lighted (traffic up) ... but no traffic down.
The icon went from 3G then H ... then 3G ...
Very frustrating ...
But after about 5 minutes ... I was able to browse internet.
I hate this.
Unlocked, unbranded, htc retail version.
I have an unlocked Desire on Voda and it only loses connection when I *try* to send a picture message.
Could someone else try test this please?
It's happening for me too. Just got this yesterday and on the Vodafone network. This is the perfect phone for me, but with this hanging / drop out 3G issue is really frustrating. Hope HTC fixes this soon or i will be stuck with a lemon

So most of the posts here confirm that it is the phone and not the network, as there is another thread with T-mobile users have issues with 3G.

I saw that thread but didn't add to it. It does appear that it isn't just T-Mobile and my phone, but something that many folks are experiencing regardless of network or area.
From what I can read of the other thread it appears that T-Mobile are accept responsibility as a network problem but as others on other networks are seeing the same issues I'm not convinced it is a network problem.

I think you could be on the mark this one, now a few operators are running the handset the issue is becoming apparant not just on T-Mobile devices.
Certainly something that HTC needs to address. T-Mobile, Orange and Voda customers all experiencing the same issue.....hmmmmm
It is definitely a problem for more Desire owners. A bit anoying if you are a hardcore mobile Internet user. And indeed, sending a picture to Facebook is already too much over 3G.
Do you guys also have problems maintaining a connection? for example today my data connection disconnected twice.. The only way to get it connected again is by enabling and disabling airplane mode.
Ive had same problem on my hero but not noticed on my Desire, both are on orange, happens loads on Hero Orange not able to explain must admit i just live with it as like the phones so much.
My problem seems to be fixed. When I started using the phone out of the box my apn setting for Vodafone Australia had been detected. What I did to make it work, was that I deleted the apns and reentered from scratch. My 3g connection seems to be more stable and consistent now.
This happens on mine also, and I've used 3 operators, in UK and Australia. It just hangs the connection, so I just have to switch connection off or go airplane mode, it will then work fine for a while.

When you have this problem ... Did you see the "3G icon" keep changing to "H" (HSDPA) then "3G" then "H" ?
That was in my situation. It looks the phone cannot maintain its data connection.
When it works, it works and fast, either on "H" or "3G".
Note that I am checking this problem on the same location, at my home And it is covered by "H" (hence sometimes it works).
Could this be a problem on signal stability of the mobile operator/provider?
I am thinking to buy a prepaid from other mobile operator and test it.
PS: I am using T-Mobile NL atm, planning to test Vodafone NL prepaid.
I'ce been browsing the web for about half an hour.Uploading, downloading stuff.
No problems with the connection whatsoever.I live in Antiparos Greece and my provider is Cosmote.
I have a sim free, unlocked, retail HTC Desire running the latest firmware and stock settings.

I've noticed this as well, when it's on 3g I can't actually browse but on g or h then it's fine! I'm on t-mobile.

Not exactly what I want to hear
I have the exact same problem with my HD2 on TMOBILE UK and am getting the Desire tomorrow BECAUSE of this.
I REALLY hope it won't be the same case, in that case it's a common thing.
HD2 AND DESIRE both have this issue.
There is/was a well acknowledged issue with the Nexus One and 3G connection (on T-mobile) - search it on Google.
There's nothing so far (that I've read) that says it is definitely the phone or the network.
I have the same problems.
Please contact the HTC support about this issue, perhaps they will release a fix for it.
It seems to have got worse over the last few days. At times I need to make more than one attempt to dial out, the calls drops unexpectidely, and people who ring me sometimes get redirected to Voicemail even though my phone is on with good signal. Have phoned orange multiple times about it, and after diagnosing with them, still at a loss. Anyone else expereincing similar?

P.s. the phone is not rooted, however very recently I used ADB to install all apps to SD.
oh, the phone has also rebooted a few random times on it's own aswell over the last few days. I think it's all linked.
Have inserted the sim card into another phone. On my desire, while testing, out of 8 incoming calls, 2 went to Voicemail. On my other phone, out of 20 incoming calls, 0 went to voicemail. Seems that it's a fault with the phone and not Orange reception. Going to phone HTC.
Suggested I do a hard reset. I might aswell root my phone and install stock if that is the case.
Any suggestions before I waste a day?
All my previous devices, were on orange, the service was awful, texts coming hours and somtimes days late, calls going str8 to vm, slow data ect, when i got my desire i changed to tmob, and ive never looked back

Hi
I used to have an X10, that frequently put peoples calls direct to VM in full reception (even with a mate standing next to me calling it went to VM). Now i have the desire and still the same issues, I get random texts telling me I have missed calls when the phone never rang. So I'm not sure if its Orange or Android. I was previously on o2 and didn't have these issue
Update the radio part ?

If you are on GPRS (i.e. no 3G coverage at your location), and you are actively using the GPRS connection (including for background data), then it will block incoming calls as if the phone were in a call already. This is a limitation of GPRS*, and it is the same on all UK networks and all phones.
This doesn't happen with 3G/HSDPA, or if you are using Wi-Fi for your data.
I don't know if this is the OP's problem, because it shouldn't cause dropped calls once established (or affect outgoing calls, I think) but it is the effect behind what some of you are describing.
*technically, it doesn't happen with certain GPRS devices (class A?), but there are very few such phones, and there are certain network measures to avoid it, but no network uses them.
so if somebody could write an app that suspends data connection if on 2g and allows data for 3g only, then problem solved?? Obviously only for people who are not really bothered by loss of data sometimes.

I'm always on GPRS party because there's no 3G/HSDPA at home nor at where I work. So I've hard-set the phone to be GSM only and I've never missed a called so far. Even had calls come in mid facebook usage....
Edit; Tried it again now,
Box standard non-branded desire, Orange Pay As You Go.
a G icon to the left of my reception bars.
I was updating the weather widget both Up and Down arrows where lit up.
Rang from my office phone to my desire..No problems at all.......
my data connection is usually switched off (saves battery), so that isn't the cause,

Odd. Maybe Orange changed something - I've never tried with them. The network feature is called DTM, but I didn't think anyone had turned it on. I frequently miss calls on O2 because of this.
The Desire also appears to frequently lie and reports the wrong symbol much of the time - so at work with only GPRS (in the middle of nowhere and we have our own cell on our site), mine often says H for HSDPA, and yet the same problem occurs. I suppose it's possible that you're actually on EDGE.
There's a thread about it here: ht tp://androidforums.com/htc-desire/68995-not-receiving-calls-when-browsing-gprs.html
used to have this problem with my x10 on orange until i flashed a new rom and updated the baseband, hasn't dropped a call since....... the wife recently upgraded her phone to desire hd and she is now having the dropping calls/forwarding to vm problem. i reckon its got to be something wrong with the radio orange are using, get it flashed and see if it helps? that is my plan with the missus phone!
I had this happen with my phone on o2 on 3g I notice my signal bar wasn't high though an drops easily. One day i got loads of delayed msgs an calls going straight to vm. I switched my setting to use 2g only an now no problems.

That's the same work around i have been using. 2G also seems better for battery life, so now I prefer it over 3G.
OP - my partner has been experience EXACTLY the same issues as you with her AMOLED Desire.
To the point where we are possibly going to root it soon, in the hope that a new ROM/radio will resolve the issues. Not sure how viable this is though...
Hi all,
I got my Desire from the British carrier "Three" last April when it came out. It was stocked with Android 2.1 but the phone was unbranded and not locked so making life much easier.
I rooted the phone weeks later and flashed a number of various roms and radios (usually newest ones recommended by rom developers) and just played around with them. No problems ever occured and everything went smooth.
However a while ago (about 4 weeks I would say) strange thing happened: when the carrier 3 does not gave 3G coverage it usually switches to other network's 2G roaming service. It is also possible to switch to 2G permanently by forcing it via phone settings. It stopped working in Central London for me while still worked elsewhere (very strange) so I had to rely only on 3G service. I thought it was a network issue at first but now I'm not sure.
Later (or at least so I noticed) the connectivity started fooling around: even when standstill (i.e. NOT in a train, bus etc.) and staying at home the network connectivity just disappears all of a sudden. Sometimes it comes back by itself and sometimes I just do it manually via netowking settings. This is much more common when on the move (i.e. on the train etc. even though it never used to happen before). Moreover, sometimes while manually searching for network it says "your sim would not allow to connect to this network" even though I try to connect to the correct one. Instead I switch "WCDMA only" and "WCDMA/GSM auto" options and connection comes back by itself. Then it disappears again after a while. Even more strangely, connection does not disappear if I am talking on the phone with someone but in other situations (such as browsing internet) it just disappears and I see no bars in network reception indicator and cannot connect to internet or make phone calls.
I know 3 has a reputation (deserved or not) of having "bad" network but I don't think this has anything to do with that. My Desire used to work fine before and never had such problems (except in specific spots which have bad coverage). Moreover, I have another old phone and it works fine without any problems with networking while the Desire messes around. I am sure it has either to do with firmware or, worse, hardware.
I have tried a number of roms, radios and settings and it's the same thing all over.
If nothing works is there a way I can still bring it to warranty service after flashing "unrooted" stock rom if there is one available? I'm so frustrated because I have no idea why this is happening.
Its because three have switched off 2g roaming I have the same problem. Search Google

So I recently got the dreaded wifi issues on my HTC One X and it went in for repairs, WiFi was clamped and it now works, and hey, the 4.2.2 update arrived while it was in and now it's updated, all fun and games right?
Well not quite, there's a few issues now...
A) NFC/Android Beam doesn't seem to work anymore, I've enabled it in options and tried sending youtube videos, browser links et al and quite frankly nothing happens, I tested the receiveing phone with another one and they can beam without any issues, while my phone seems unable to send or receive, I've tried different positions and so on. (I have the international version and there is no option to turn Android beam on/off, but there shouldn't be one according to http://www.htc.com/www/support/howto.aspx?p_id=440&id=141894&p_name=htc-one-x )
B) So in Sweden we have EDGE, UMTS (3G) and HSDPA for my phone, however, since it came back from repairs having full bars on 3G is a WORSE connection than having full bars on EDGE, and five bars on HSDPA tops out at about 2Mbit a second, where it before had at least 4-5 in the same area (admittedly it's not often the phone is in 3G mode and not HSDPA, but still).
I don't see how I'm able to do anything about either issue, but I thought I'd ask here before sending it in on RMA, again.
