Hello I m new to xda so forgive me if I m posting this in the wrong category. I have HTC wildfire 2.2.1. I have rooted it and intend to install CM7 but when I try to backup my rom ROM MANAGER fails either to finish the backup(freezes or restarts) either to generating md5 sum. I dont need certainly all of my settings i just want a stock rom so i can switch back if i want. So my question is if it will be the same to just download a shipped rom from the site and install it like i would do with my backed up rom and have the same results. What shipped rom should I download? I am from Greece.
Hi, have you tried backing up from recovery? I hate rom manager and have never backed up/restored using this app.

Yes I tried it manually from recovery clockwork but there is problem too. I tried different memory cards, I made the cards empty, I reformatted them at fat32 but nothing seems to change. When I start with rom manager with my 8giga sd it just freezes so i have to pull out the battery. When i use my 2giga sd everything is ok until the end where it writes no sd ext found skipping and generating md5 sum. Then before it restarts(boots normally into the phone) its writing something I m not able to read because it happens very quickly.I think it fails because the yellow bar is at about 75% when the restart happens. When i try to backup from recovery clockwork just stops backup and I m again on the clockwork menu like everything is ok but it isnt.

You formatted the sdcards before using backup feature? I'm not possitive but I'm pretty sure android stores certain files on your sdcard so may be the reason its not completing.
Try...
Turn off phone,Place your sdcard in phone, turn on phone. If your rom boots normal then reboot into cwm, goto advanced and wipe dalvik cache, reboot, wait for rom to load, again reboot into cwm recovery and now try backing up.

Yep, all my backups are stored in /sdcard/clockworkmod. I once made the stupid mistake of formatting my SD to get something working. I had to go back to S-ON to take my phone to HTC so I learnt it the hard way

Did everything the way I normally do when flashing a new rom.
Now when I attempt to load any ROM from my sd card, I get this message:
Installing system files ...
E:Error in /sdcard/Incredible Files/SkyRaider_33_Sense_Final.zip
(Status 0)
Installation aborted.
I also try to do a restore from my nandroid backups and it ALWAYS "freezes". Now the only thing I can do is boot into recovery but nothing after that. I've read through a lot of material and know how to do most things, however I'm by no means an expert and now I feel like I've caused irreversible damage.
HELP?
sounds to me like your rom got corrupt during the download, i would try to download it again after deleting the file off your SD card.
did you download it from a PC or from your inc? i have seen people get corrupt files when downloading straight from the inc, its best to use a PC to download the roms
you can use the mount menu in recovery to mount your usb storage if you dont have an adapter to read the microsd, this will let you replace the possibly corrupt rom with a fresh zip
My original sd card has become unreadable by both my incredible and by my sd card reader. I have another one and loaded all of the backed up files I had on the old one. I've tried downloading the ROM through ROM Manager as well as placing the file on the new sd card and both do the same thing.
I honestly have no idea what to do now and am worried that not everything I need was transferred to the new sd card.
I just want to be able to load ANY ROM and I'm willing to reset/wipe anything and everything but I don't think there's anything I can do at this point....
well there is nothing that needs to be on the SD card at all aside from the backup or [rom].zip file you are trying to flash
have you tried installing a different rom with recovery? maybe virtous rom?
also what version of clockwork recovery are you running?

Positive it's FAT32 and I just flashed the most current Clockwork Recovery from ROM Manager.

Try to format/partition the sd via recovery. The new clockwork has this method (haven't tried it and don't know if it works) and the alternate RA does, too. I've used that one and know it works. Try that (leave the defaults, which is 512mb sd-ext, 32mb or similiar swap, I think, and the rest as FAT32).
boot into hboot (vol down and power when device is off)
what hboot version and baseband are you running?
I dont think the sd card is the problem
I wiped the dalvik and batt stats and for whatever reason tried again to reinstall the ROM and it went through this time.
Everything seems to be working as normal. Man was that one weird ass experience.
Ok... Well, let's see if I can do my best to explain everything.
I've been using AdamG's "Official Froyo HTC Sense ROM" in my Desire since I got it (about 4 months ago). Recently, my crappy stock SD card corrupted itself and after backing it up, I reformatted it.
Apparently that did something really bad because now my phone wont turn on. It just sits at the "HTC" loading screen. I can get into recovery, but anything I try results in "ADB server out of date. Killing..." and then "Daemon still not running".
I'm at a loss here. I haven't bothered playing with root, or ROMs or anything since I first did it all 4 months ago (without a problem). So treat me like an utter noob.
Have you tried to take the SD card out and reboot?
Take out the SDcard and try booting into Recovery.
you should of done a nandroid, maybe you have formatted your ext partition, if you have you will need to re-flash
I've tried taking the SD card out and all the obvious stuff.

That sounds plausible, that might have been what I did. What's involved in a re-flash? Start from square one? Re-root and all? How do I do all that from where I am now?
No a re-flash would mean flashing just your ROM.
Were you using A2SD?

Yes I was.
I managed to get into Recovery and wiped everything from there, the phone now boots to the stock ROM. (stock as in the one I had loaded, AdamG's one). I want to swap to a different ROM, how do I do so from this point?
Also, on another (maybe unrelated) note: When in recovery, it says:
"E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command"
Does that mean anything?
Pick the ROM you want and put it on the root of your SD card.
Download ROM manager and select Install ROM from SD Card, Look for the ROM you put on your SD Card and select it, Tick Backup Existing ROM and Wipe Data and Cache. Then let ROM manager do it's thing.
Sorry I don't know what "E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command" means, I'm a newbie too, I only replied because I formatted my SD card before and had the same problems you're having.
Thanks Joe... Unfortunately, I got a little further into the process and went to flash via the Recovery (rather than in the ROM Manager app)...
...I say "unfortunately" because now I have no system (as it formatted it as part of the process) but I keep getting:
E:Can't mount SDEXT:
E:Failure at line 11:
copy_dir PACKAGE:data SDEXT:
Installation aborted.

Will the problems ever end?
Moved to Q&A as not development
how did you format your SD? I'm no expert but it looks like your SD EXT partition is still corrupted. I would format and repartition it using Gparted
Heres a guide for gparted http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7279872&postcount=3
Haha, I think I got it, it's finishing the flashing process now. I'll let you know if it boots up and runs ok as soon as it does.
I think the problem with "SDEXT" was the ROM itself, it must have been a bad download or something, cause I just tried another one and it seems to be working fine.
Thanks for the help guys, will update ASAP.

Sonofa--
I think I spoke too soon. I'm pretty sure the phone is now stuck in a bootloop.
I just keep getting the "HTC Quietly Brilliant" boot animation playing, sometimes it plays 5 seconds after another, then I leave it for like a minute before it plays it again. But it's stuck there.
...Unless ROMs have taken A VERY long time to start up since I last flashed. But I doubt it.
...My temper is slowly rising now.
Sent you a PM mate
So a while back I rooted my desire, and played about with a few roms, then stuck with cyanogen for quite a while. This is the order of a few actions I took which I think may be where the problem occurred.
So from being rooted with cyanogen 7:
I decided to s-off the phone with alpharev
I then put a new splash screen on
Then decided I wanted a new sd card (I was told by a mate it will just go straight in no problems) So I bought an 8gb card stuck it in put my backed up data on the card and booted, all was fine.
I then thought about trying a few new roms that had appeared, and I tried flashing one only for the phone to hang forever on the splash screen.
I've been trying a few things to try to resolve it, stabbing in the dark, such as running unrevoked3 (maybe to root again, only for it to say the firmware is too new) I made my new sd card a gold card, like I did with the original.
None of these helped. has anyone any ideas or know how to sort this out???
What recovery do you have? Which ROM did hang?
Did you do a full wipe?
Does the rom you want to instal require a ext partition?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
I wiped the cache, and dalvik cache, even did a factory reset in recovery. Im using clockwork recovery.
I tried InsertCoin_GB_Sense2.1_CM7_v20 and Reflex_S_2.0_LITE_GingerBread_Sense-2.1_GRI40_A2SD+
Maybe these need an ext partition? Would that be it? I'm not sure how to set that up yet.
yes those roms need ext partition, don't know about reflex bu have insertcoin myself, 1GB ext4.
1.go to recovery
2.press on partition sd,choose the size, then after it's finished convert it to ext3 in partition sd again below the option of making one, you can make ext4, but thats up to you. ext3 is needed..
Don't forget to backup your sd, you'll lose everything on it
The ROM you mentioned is an a2sd ROM. So yes, you'll need to partition your SD card if you want to use a a2sd rom.

Thanks for this I will get on it and let you know
I can't find an option in my clockwork to partition the sd. Just been searching a bit and seen it can be done through rom manager, that rebooted the phone and left me with the ! in a triangle and the small droid on the screen and when I press the power button it is in recovery it says installation aborted. Is there a guide for the Desire? I can't seem to find one....
Sorry found a guide on here. Will try to do it now.
Ok so I am really struggling to get anywhere with a few different guides to partition the card. Through rom manager it also says signature failed, although I have tried toggling the permissions. Major

Steveoh like i told, do it from recovery(easiest), when you rooted you were able to change the recovery(unrEVOked), do so and change it to Ra recovery
Still if you don't want to this program can help youhttp://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html
Download this and do it from you pc, although it's very easy to do from recovery, takes 5,6 minutes mostly waiting..
I have created a partition with the program you recommenced. How will I know that it is ext 3? And that my phone will use it?
found it!
While i making back up i got this error: "Error while making backup image of /sd-ext"
how can i solve this problem? or i can restore, but my apps on ext wont work?
(i use cm 9 aplha3 , and link2sd)
are you using cwm6? i have same problem here and looking for a way to turn back to cwm5...(and you can manually back up your sd-ext..it is located in internal storage data/sdext copy it to sd card and after restoring copy again to same place))
If you're using Link2SD/Data2SD then you must be having a separate EXT2/3/4 partition on your SD card. You can simply backup the files in that partition & put them back after reflashing.
If you have a linux system, then connect USB will show up both partitions, then you can copy them to a folder on your PC as a backup.
Its actually a good thing when you don't want a full restore too. Some things like Swype's personal dictionary can't be backed up, so after a fresh install, just copy these files on the EXT partition!

It's easy using CWM app. Run CWM, take the first option in the menu, confirm it's your device and it will reflash recovery 5.0.2.8. Before reflashing it already tells you that you've 5.0.2.8, but that's a mistake, if you reflash it downgrades your recovery and, at least in my device, the problem in sd-ext backup disappears.

Yea restoring will work but some of the apps will not appear or will not work properly, those are stored in sdext..run link2sd and mount partition after you can copy your backed up sd ext folder... i also turned back to cwm 5 but it still has error with sdext i dont know why..

I think you mean Rom Manager. It's a cwm app, but when you say cwm you're usually referring to the recovery app.
Edit : Try using titanium backup, I find it works better. I use cwm just to flash stuff.
Hi guys okay so i have a problem. i have cwm recovery and i have slim bean on my s4 installed and the thing is i i tried flashing a rom from my external sd card 32gb and it automaticallly fails no matter how many times i try and its fat32 aswell thats what it says on its properties. Backup your SD card data, reformat the SD card. And restore the data, should work. However, the issue i was having with flashing ROMs was not due to SD card issues, but my actual data partition was corrupt and using CWM i formatted my entire data partition and everything flashed properly then.

Lol why you guys hating I got twrp and did what you said and all seems to be good I think twrp is better because in twrp there's a key important feature which is a file manager built in let's you move zips from sd card to internal or vice versa cwm doesn't have that

It has some nice features but for me, the only real functions for recovery are:
1) Wipe data/cache/dalvik and some other mounts.
2) Nandroid backup and restore.
Don't have any other needs, and CWM hasn't given me any troubles in ages, TWRP on the other hand... But if CWM had the file manager, it would make it that much better for me.
