Did everything the way I normally do when flashing a new rom.
Now when I attempt to load any ROM from my sd card, I get this message:
Installing system files ...
E:Error in /sdcard/Incredible Files/SkyRaider_33_Sense_Final.zip
(Status 0)
Installation aborted.
I also try to do a restore from my nandroid backups and it ALWAYS "freezes". Now the only thing I can do is boot into recovery but nothing after that. I've read through a lot of material and know how to do most things, however I'm by no means an expert and now I feel like I've caused irreversible damage.
HELP?
sounds to me like your rom got corrupt during the download, i would try to download it again after deleting the file off your SD card.
did you download it from a PC or from your inc? i have seen people get corrupt files when downloading straight from the inc, its best to use a PC to download the roms
you can use the mount menu in recovery to mount your usb storage if you dont have an adapter to read the microsd, this will let you replace the possibly corrupt rom with a fresh zip
My original sd card has become unreadable by both my incredible and by my sd card reader. I have another one and loaded all of the backed up files I had on the old one. I've tried downloading the ROM through ROM Manager as well as placing the file on the new sd card and both do the same thing.
I honestly have no idea what to do now and am worried that not everything I need was transferred to the new sd card.
I just want to be able to load ANY ROM and I'm willing to reset/wipe anything and everything but I don't think there's anything I can do at this point....
well there is nothing that needs to be on the SD card at all aside from the backup or [rom].zip file you are trying to flash
have you tried installing a different rom with recovery? maybe virtous rom?
also what version of clockwork recovery are you running?

Positive it's FAT32 and I just flashed the most current Clockwork Recovery from ROM Manager.

Try to format/partition the sd via recovery. The new clockwork has this method (haven't tried it and don't know if it works) and the alternate RA does, too. I've used that one and know it works. Try that (leave the defaults, which is 512mb sd-ext, 32mb or similiar swap, I think, and the rest as FAT32).
boot into hboot (vol down and power when device is off)
what hboot version and baseband are you running?
I dont think the sd card is the problem
I wiped the dalvik and batt stats and for whatever reason tried again to reinstall the ROM and it went through this time.
Everything seems to be working as normal. Man was that one weird ass experience.

Hi, i am trying to install app2sd using the Nimbu guide found here : http://nimbu.amorvi.com/2010/05/how-to-root-your-htc-desire/
However, when i follow that guide and start to flash from the sd card, i get this error:
E:Can't symlink /system/xbin/[
E:Failure at line5:
symlink busybox SYSTEM:xbin/[
The card i am using to flash the app2sd is NOT partitioned. Is this an issue?
Here is some other info on my phone
- i have an orange phone, but i reflashed to the 1.21.... generic rom
- After installing this rom, i flashed the radio back to this one: update-bravo-radio-32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11-signed.zip
If you need any more info let me know and thanks for your help
ok, just to update this...
i have now managed to install app2sd by reinstalling rootedupdate.zip
HOWEVER, now when i turn my phone on it just goes to the white HTC screen and hangs there, it doesnt ever boot up. Can anyone shed any light as to why its doing this and how i can fix it?
i have partitioned the SD card and did install it with a goldcard
in the mean time im gonna flash back to a non app2sd rom
anyone know why it might be doing this? it just hangs on the white htc splash screen straight after powering on

If you are stuck in a boot loop, then like you suggested, it's most likely because you have not partitioned the SD Card.
You only need to create a Gold Card if your phone is software branded and is running a non-generic rom.
but ive rebooted the phone with a partitioned SD card and that doesnt work...Does the card i install App2sd need to be partioned?

You replace the Gold Card sd card with your normal sd card. Then in recovery, you need to partition your SD card, this is for the benefit of allocating extra space with the ext partition, which is used specifically for the installation of App data.
That's why it is recommened to set a 0MB swap, ext2 with 512MB (for apps), and the rest of the partition to FAT32.
Make sure you wipe Factory Reset, Dalvik, Cache, SD:EXT and then flash the ROM. After you have done this and while you are still in recovery (don't reboot phone yet), install Apps2SD zip (only if you are installing a ROM that does not include Apps2SD). Power off phone and then insert your sd card into the phone (not the Gold Card). You then enter Recovery Mode again and partition the SD card accordingly.
ok, but im not sure your understanding (i might be wrong...)
I have 2 sd cards....1 which is a gold card which is NOT partitioned and contains the install file for app2sd
and 1 which is the sdcard i run in my phone under normal operation.
I am ONLY using the non partitioned card to install app2sd. As soon as it is installed i remove this card and insert the Partitioned card
Does this make sense? So i know that a partioned sd card Must be used when running the phone with apps2sd, but do i need a Partioned goldcard just to install it? i can i just use a standard goldcard for the installation (and then put in the partioned card after installation) (note...i am using a goldcard as i have an orange uk desire with a generic rom)
Ah yes i understand you now. Yep, the Gold Card should not be partitioned, only formatted as FAT32. After you have used the Gold Card to install Apps2SD, you then insert the other SD card and partition using that.

ok, so that is how i had it, with the partioned sdcard, but i am still getting the white htc splash screen and not getting any further. Any idea why this might be happening?
im installing it on the 1.21... update
try ext3 , NOT ext2
that did it for me.

Do you mean to select the option:
SD:ext2 to ext3
as i have already done that and it didnt work
Hmm... strange...
Have you tried repartitioning your sd card? Set the values for swap and ext to zero, then check to see if it boots ok.

nope, just tried with these settings and unfortunately still no luck. I even tried it without any sdcard in there at all and still the same result.
Could the radio version have anything to do with it? as (other than the update) thats the only other thing ive flashed to it

What Radio version did you flash exactly? I don't think that would cause a problem unless you flashed an incompatible version. Are you running Bootloader 0.75.0000 or 0.80.0000?
I would suggest you flash back to stock Radio and then flash back to stock ROM also, as this will restore the stock Kernel. Then after that, carefully take it step by step and try again.
From the steps you have carried out, it all sounds ok to me. When you attempt this again after returning everything to stock, try a ROM that already includes Apps2SD, leaving you to just partition the SD card (after wiping and flashing the custom ROM while in Recovery).
The rom im using is the rootupdate base (1.15) with the 1.21... generic rom manually installed.
I then flashed the following radio:
update-bravo-radio-32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11-signed.zip
This is really annoying as im finding myself flashing my phone daily now to get this working. I appreciate all your help but i think now im just gonna wait for a stable release of froyo to come onto the forums and update with that
Thats the stock radio version that you re-flashed so don't see how that would cause a problem.

So I completed step 2 of root today and decided to flash Fresh .5.3
Wiped data, but forgot to wipe SD card. Began to boot loop so I read that I would need to partition the SD card. I tried to Flash back to Fresh .2 in order to backup my SD card and began to boot loop there too.
So I go into recovery and partition (0,0)
I'm still boot looping Fresh .2 and I can't flash anything else (read: my backup) because I wiped the SD card.
Help would be greatly appreciated

flipz says that you should wipe your sd card for whatever reason. so he was just following the instructions. :/
Yeah, I was just following the instructions I was given via Flipz.
I don't have an SD adapter handy...is there a way to access the SD card while in the phone or am I going to have to get an adapter and go that way?

I flashed Flipz latest without wiping my SD and got no issues, but if Flipz mentioned that and you followed, I am sorry to hear you have this conflict now. Like I suggested in my previous post, easiest way is to format your SD using an adapter with WIN or MAC, your choice, then download and place Flipz ROM and re-flash.

I was boot looping after the initial install so I looked at Flipz FAQ. He says, "In every case that I've seen, this has been caused by sd:ext not being wiped properly" and then advises to do a complete sd wipe. Anyway, I guess I will have to wait until I can get an adapter. Sheesh.

Here is the exact quote.
"In every case that I've seen, this has been caused by sd:ext not being wiped properly. Clockwork Recovery isn't doing it right. It appears to but actually errors out. The fastest way to actually wipe it properly would be to reboot in to recovery and re-partition it. This will wipe EVERYTHING off of your sdcard! Do 0/0/Remaining if you want to use apps2sd or 32/1gb/Remaining to use apps2sd. Then wipe everything and re-flash the rom."
It's confusing enough that he said both the 0/0/remaining and 32/1gb/remaining both allow you to use apps2sd...I didn't know there were different levels of repartitioning.
I've discovered that in the recovery menu there is an option that is something like "USB-MS" which basically allows you to access the SD card while in the menu. I threw .5.3 on there and am booting now....Hoping this works.
So i went to flash a ROM and now it says while flashing that the flash was aborted because the system can't mount the SD card. I'm using the newest CWM and have flashed stuff before. Not sure what to do, it wont let me make backups, restore, or flash anything.

Did you use the Mounts menu to try to manually mount the sd?
Also, Which method did you use to get into CWM?

Ya i went into the menus and manually unmounted and then remounted the SD card but that didn't do anything. I used the typical three finger method to boot into CWM like i always do.
i think
I believe this has something to do with the way in which the SD card is formatted I also cannot mount in to usb storage in CWM i get an E: error
Have you guys tried to "Reboot recovery" from the "Adavnced" menu in CWM, and then try to flash the ROM?
I've had this happen before, it was a formatting problem. The easiest fix I found was to back up SD-card data on your pc, reformat the card from the Android system, then copy your data back over. CWM should be able to mount your card now.
I had a problem with the mount dropping mid flash it was my sd for some reason was chipped I always keep backup files

Just flash another version of CWM and u'r done. I faced this problem after flashing Siyah Kernel v2.3 which includes CWM 5.0, and I tried all the methods online; formatting, error-checking, etc... nothing succeed!
Finally I flashed another kernel (Which includes CWM 4.0) and it worked fine.
Thanks!
Same thing happened to me just now... found this thread.. pushed new CWM in ODIN - Worked like a charm.. Fixed in 2 minutes..
Flashing another CWM (ACS recovery this time...) via Odin did not fix the issue. Going to try the format /sdcard fix and see... argh!
*Edit* aaaand that didn't work either. WTF... I literally just got this phone 2 hours ago... brand new.
delete the .androidsecure folder on your sd that worked for me formatting wont work if you put your files on the same with me because i always copied that folder along too
Hi guys.
I'm having a bit of trouble restoring my ROM after testing the ICS. What happened was I flashed the ICS ROM, played around with it, then decided to go back to my original ROM (CM7) which I had made a nandroid backup of through recovery.
I did a full wipe through recovery (CWM 5.0.2.0), but when I came to format the sdcard, it said error mounting /sdcard, skipping format. At first I though it was the sdcard, so I got a new one, formatted it on my pc and retried. It failed again. I can't mount the sdcard to my pc too.
I tried partitioning using amonRA recovery too, it didn't work either. I don't think it's an sdcard issue, so I'm not sure what's going on. I can't flash any ROM now, the only thing working is booting to CM7 in safe mode, but I don't know what use that would be.
Any help would be very much appreciated. Please let me know if I can give any more information to help you out.
Thanks.
Hi!
Welcome to the forums
Sorry to see you are having trouble, let me help you out:
Why are you formatting your SD card in the fist place?? If your phone doesn't recognize the SD card there is little you can do. Seeing as it doesn't read the new SD card either is no surprise as the files for the Recovery are on the SD card..
Do you have an SD-Card reader? Try connecting it to your PC/Mac/Whatever using that and see what happens. It could be your phone, and not your SD-Card after all
USUALLY a nandroid backup does not require wiping for restoration. And wiping doesn't mean you wipe your SD card.
Good Luck,
AU
I connected the sdcard to my pc and I accessed it without any issues. I found .dm files in it though, some sort of debug logs.
Hmm, sounds weird.
Have you tried formatting it on your computer and then formatting it on your phone? Can't see why it should help, just troubleshooting here.
Perhaps your card is dead
Why are you formatting your SD-Card in the first place, if you're only doing a nandroid restore?
Try different recovery, CWM can get picky. Or you can try formatting card within Android. Use SDFormatter in Windows.
I followed these steps and it worked. Now I can access the SD Card.
Thanks anyway for your help guys. I appreciate your support.

Backup your SD card data, reformat the SD card. And restore the data, should work. However, the issue i was having with flashing ROMs was not due to SD card issues, but my actual data partition was corrupt and using CWM i formatted my entire data partition and everything flashed properly then.

It has some nice features but for me, the only real functions for recovery are:
1) Wipe data/cache/dalvik and some other mounts.
2) Nandroid backup and restore.
Don't have any other needs, and CWM hasn't given me any troubles in ages, TWRP on the other hand... But if CWM had the file manager, it would make it that much better for me.
