My twitter app settings has a minimum of 5 minutes sync interval, why can't it be instant? Why would anyone set it to say 1 hour. They would miss the opportunity to reply in good time.
Is there a way to edit this setting and give a new value of 0?

Funny you asked that because I have my sync disabled. I wanna save my battery and make it last through the day. If people want me to reply in good time, they should send me a text message or better yet call me and not tweet a message to me. Besides that, if I have a limited data plan, every minute of refresh would mean data usage...
I only have my sync on when I'm at home and my wireless is on. If only tweeting was instant like txt messaging.
I'm looking at twitter in root explorer to see if there's anything I can change.

I've set up my gmail account with my htc desire and can access my emails fine using the Google mail application (the one with a red M in an envelope). However, to test the push email function, I emailed myself from another account. On my pc, the email arrived instantly, but my desire didn't notify of a new message till almost 15 minutes later.
Is there a setting somewhere that i might have missed - to enable retrieval of emails as they arrive?

Were you using wifi? Push is really crap over wifi on the desire, the only time I get the push email instantly is when I use mobile data instead.
I was having the same problem and think that it doesnt allow push.
I then set ot up in exchange activesync but im worried about battery life :

Hope that is of some use.

Yeah I always use mobile data too. I hardly ever use wifi unless I'm downloading something big to my phone such as copilot maps.
Anyway, I've set it up with activesync now and push is working flawlessly. Sometimes I get notified of emails before they even arrive on my pc.

hot-fuzz, I'm gonna start tomorrow with a full charge and have active sync running all day. I'll post my findings here if I observe dramatic decrease in battery life.
got it set up on the one i am using and it seems to work just fine. Emails appear on the phone within seconds of arriving at Gmail.
I do sometimes get periods where it is a bit slower though, i think generally when in a bad signal area where i only have 2G. I'm guessing when it has lower signal or only 2G, it may slow down the checking to save battery power or bandwidth or something....

That would be very useful. Thinking of doing it myself.
If i have mine setup for every 5 minutes thats 13 times every hour (including on the hour). I need to know if exchange polls take up more battery than checking 13 times an hour, if i get less than 13 emails an hour via exchange (which i do).
hmmmmm
Be interesting what peoples findings are on battery life and different ways to grab email.
I want to get back to the main topic.
I came from HTC Hero where Gmail push (in the gmail app) worked perfect - also on the 2.1 custom roms.
Not on the Desire it does not push the mails instantley. I don't want to go the way over the HTC Mail app...
Anyone has an idea how to fix it?
I am a twitter n00b and like to get some breaking news from CNN and cyanogenmod feed, and also Slickdeals. I have had my setup as follows: I have my twitter app set to manual sync, and I get text messages for tweets.
My question is: Is this setup saving me battery life? I'm thinking it is for two reasons:
1. for downtime with no tweets it's not pulling on the battery at all (I don't have that many people I follow so it's not that often, maybe a couple per hr on average)
2. text messages use less battery than data? (not sure about this one)
Would love to hear other's feedback and setups
Thanks

it is, but for 1, it's not pulling any data downtime or otherwise, unless you maually refresh.
As long as it's not updating/notifying in the background you should be good.

Doesn't the twitter app run in the background and sync every hr or however often you specify or is it push and I'm not seeing it?

no, it checks in the background (not push) based on the frequency you set it to (which is a big battery waster) - I thought you said you set it to manual, so in that case, it's only checking when you manually tell it to.

ok so your vote is to keep it to the texts and use the manual setting then?
Thanks!

Why is it BB apps update instantly and Android ones don't?
Examples
Facebook notifications aren't instant. You have to refresh to see em.
Emails, same thing or it you can set it up to check every 15 min.
BB if someone emails me, I get it as soon as it's sent. Same for facebook.
Are their apps or ways to change this?

I use Gmail and it is instant push notification. I don't have to sync anything. I use exchange for my work email which is also push notification and it is instant without any syncing required.
As far as FB goes, I have mine set to notify me through my gmail account and as soon as I receive a comment I get an email instantly.
I also came from a BB and personally will never go back. Good luck
I found the BB market not very useful..but I did have a VZ curve without wifi.
I had issues with syncing working well with task killing..
Once you upgrade to android 2.2 get rid of advanced task killer and automatic task killer..
I've had no issues with syncing since..

Ohh yeah and another thing that I hated about my BB, the thing had virtually no memory on it and I had to constantly deal with a memory leak issue that was basically a known factor with BB's.
I was constantly cleaning and clearing cache on a daily if not 2-3 times a day basis.
My Dinc has never had any issues with this and in fact has plenty of memory to go around.
The only other problem i could complain about on my Dinc is the battery issues but I have been using the Seidio 1750 battery, and have rooted the phone and am running SetCPU and also turned off "Background data always on" and my battery life is awesome now!
I've been trying to figure out why my battery life diminishes so quickly (stock battery).
In the battery info screen, i discovered my awake time was nearly 50% of my uptime!
Using spareparts, determined that the offending program was k9 mail.
The software is configured for imap push on 2 accounts (both on the same server - served by hostgator). Push is only set to for the inbox folder on each of the accounts. Background sync in k9 settings is set to always. Idle refresh frequency is set at 24 min for each account. Mobile data always on is enabled in the main android network settings (otherwise push doesn't work after the screen is off for 5 min).
When no email is received, awake time goes down, but whenever an email comes in, at least a minute is added to the awake time each time.
In conclusion, it would appear that whenever a push event occurs, k9 does not let the system go back to sleep until at least a minute has elapsed. Why not receive mail, then resume sleep immediately...
Is this lack of resuming sleep a function of the program, or something controlled by k9? Any way to force it back to sleep after the even has occurred?
I thought I'd post some thoughts since it's been a few days.
Digging around here and other forums didn't reveal a whole lot. The bugtracker at the developer's site gave instructions on how to enable logging on the client.
Reviewing the logs, it's clearly obvious that after each session, a wakelock of 60sec is enacted. This is where my awake time runaway is coming from! The more emails I get, the longer it stays awake. For every message received, wake time is incremented by a min. If a new message arrives 61 seconds since the last, awake time will increase by 2 min. This is a cumulative effect which gets worse as more messages are received.
Other clients such as maildroid seem to release the phone back to sleep as soon as the email is received.
I'm hopeful the folks at k9 find a solution for this in the near future. I think the client is one of the better ones with regard for granular configuration. Maildroid does the job, but wasn't a whole lot more robust than the htc client (other than for push support). Seven has some strange validation processes.
I know I can go by way of googlemail, but the accounts in question cannot be forwarded to google. So it leaves with choices.
1) Leave it as is until fixed and let the battery drain continue
2) Still have it setup as IMAP, but disable push altogether - this works, but to get new email, it has to resync the whole folder, which becomes more and more time consuming as the folder grows. A checking interval is set up (poll every x min)
3) similar to 2, but manual polling
4) other suggestions??

5) get the source and fix it yourself.
I'm using k9 for 3 accounts and I've never noticed a battery drain.
If I knew how to program I would be all over this.
Unless your accounts are configured for push, and depending on the volume of email you receive, you may not notice this issue.

I definitely use push, but the volume is pretty low.
Between the different accounts, i get a good 100+ mails a day... Easily subtracting nearly 2 hrs of wake time to my battery life when the device isn't really being used.
any updates? I too am facing with the high battery usage of K9, and I do get a lot of emails.
While using gmail client, the battery lasts a lot longer, ~36 hours. With K9, barely 14 hours!
Part of my fix was changing roms. Although both are based on the same ota, the current one doesn't seem to have issues with k9 (or not as much).
You might look into updating to the latest k9 too.. 3.708 is the most current, not on the market though - you need to go to dev's site.
yeah. ROMs it a good notice:
I dont have problems on the CyanogenMod 11 with battery drain
I'm not sure if anyone else has been dealing with this, but the Stock Email App seems to be engineered to make it's users going insane. Let me explain:
I have two email accounts connected to my phone. A school (.edu) email, and a personal Windows Live account for everything else. Both are set to Push notifications. When I receive a new email, I'm notified as extremely quickly, and it works as it should. 90% of the time it's an a newsletter from my school or an email from Newegg or something so I usually just swipe the notification away, and go about my day. Here's the problem. After swiping away the notification, I'll constantly be reminded about this "new" email every so often. Even though I technically haven't read it, I found it weird that I have the notifications set to PUSH and it seems to want to keep annoying me until I give in and just open the email app and delete it.
This happens quite often and to make things worse, I'll go in and delete 5-6 emails at the end of the week and close the app. Minutes later, I'll receive an email for 5-6 "new" emails. I'll go take a look, and it's older emails that I've definitely read in the past and wanted to keep in my inbox, starting the cycle over and causing me to check the tiny boxes on the side and mark them as read, only to have this happen again later in the week. I thought the point of a Push notification was that I'd be notified in near-realtime. It does so quite impressively, but then it seems to set some flag where it just pesters the crap out of me every hour or so (or when I receive another new email) until I give in..
Is there a way I can stop this? I'd rather not download a third party app if I don't have to. I'm not a heavy email user. I mainly keep the notifications on to notify me of shipping updates, payment confirmations and class cancellations from my professors. There's nothing worse than waking up at 8:30 and stumbling into an empty lecture hall, so the notifications are pretty important.
Thanks in advance,
Well that's the default behaviour of the email app, you will be notified for new mails on each sync interval you have set.
Just open the notification & read the mail to avoid getting repeated notifications.
