So what're the chances my phone will work? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dropped my phone in the porcelain throne this morning for all of probably 5 seconds. Immediately removed the battery + dried it off etc. Its been sitting in rice with 2 of those silica packs. Do any of you think I'm screwed? Or is there a chance?

There is a chance, ive heard of it before. Just be patient and keep it in the rice for 2 to 3 days before trying to boot it. What ever you do dont usr a blow dryer, it just pushes the watter in farther, and if you get it to hot can dammage the circuitry. Was it still on when you pulled the battery?

Yeah, it was. But I must've pulled it out fast enough because everything still works perfectly! (After 36 hours in rice)

I am glad it worked for you . I used the rice method before too but I waited about a week. The phone worked. Of course this is a big YMMV .

Well, the good news is that water damage voids the warranty, so you can crack it open if anything does flake out and replace it.

I'm not even sure if the water changed the color of the water damage indicators, what's it supposed to look like?

Desire Z Hardware Problem

I have or I had a problem,I was at holiday in Egypt and I wanted to take pictures underwater in sea and in pool,so I bought underwater bag for phones.
And then the problem came out,the bag was leaking (very little leak),water from pool entered in phone, maybe a drop of salt water entered too.
Then a problem came out,my phone was shutting down by itself, when I turn it on, it runs all normal but after few minutes i shuts down,it didn't want to charge battery.
When I go to camera app it says that it cannot use flash because of cold weather, and whenever i turn it on again. The date on phone is 6 jan 1980.
But when I came home, there were less problems. And when my battery ran of I turned off phone, and I charged it while its off,now I turned it on and everything works normal as it was.
What is the problem?
And should I give the phone to service to see whats going on?
Sorry for my bad English.

So your phone got soaked in water, and you decided to turn it on and use it?
Try another battery.. If not take it mostly apart and leave it in a bowl of rice for a few days.

And if it did remember salt doesn't evaporate so now you may have salt on your motherboard... soon to be rust... you should seriously consider getting thoroughly cleaned

Rice absorbs more so than just air (or AC'd room for that matter), it's a pretty common remedy. Though personally I probably would have used all those spare silica packets I receive in various bags and electronics packagings.

But if salt is in my phone,my phone shouldn't be working now? Yes/No

Well it varies. If salt is in the phone the damaging effect can occur over time, it may not be immediate as salt by itself isn't always immediately noticeable (i.e.: where as water's conductive properties can cause more immediate damage).

Dropped my phone on water and now its always "Charging"

Hi!
Ealier Today I dropped my phone in water, it didn't submerged I say only about an inch of the phone made contact the bottom part. Now, 12 hours later, I removed my phone from rice and it looks dry and all ( I remove the housing as well) the phone works and all but now the charging icon is always on and its losing power really quick. It sometimes goes back to normal and sometimes thinks its charging. Any ideas whats going on?
Try cleaning the usb port.
I dropped mine in the pool about 2 months ago and it started doing the same thing. A good cleaning of the charging port took care of the issue.

I used to work for a cell phone repair shop and we used 99.9% isopropyl alcohol to repair liquid damaged devices. Dissemble the device, clean the damaged area, and completely dry before reassembling the phone.
You're going to need to two things: a clean brush and the cleaning solution.
Chances of repair liquid damaged electronics is 50/50. Good luck!

Once my co-worker went gallivanting around in the rain with his blackberry in his pocket and it stopped working. I took out the battery and let the phone soak in distilled water for about 10 minutes. After that I placed it in a vacuum desiccator for an hour. The main danger with getting your phone wet is the ions and dissolved solids present in the water. Many of these can cause short circuits. Soaking in distilled water should dissolve away any precipitates that may have formed when the phone was dried following its initial soaking.

First of all that's funny! Silly things happen when we are drunk.
I suggest you fully dry your phone out put it in a sack of rice for a few days then see what happens.

You could try a factory reset, but strange things happen from water damage.
My old Sony Ericsson worked fine, except for the fact (after I dropped it in a pan of gravy) that the gsm aerial only had a weak signal. Everything else was normal..
Could try silica gel, but there could be corrosion (you can't always even see the corrosion) from minerals/deposits in the water, which is causing a short circuit somewhere, causing the problem.
Unfortunately any water damage automatically (to the repair centers at least) means it's BER (beyond economical repair) so if you can't fix it from it drying out (ideally give it at least 3 days or even more in the rice or silica gel) the only option really is to buy a new one, or claim on insurance if you have cover.

water damaged battery?

If the little white paper thing on the top of the battery turns pink or goes away completely does that only mean that it has been damaged by water? And does it make the battery any less better? And is there anyway maybe to fix it?

I can't speak for whether there is a moisture indicator on the battery. What I can say is that even if the battery was wet at one point, as long as it was dried properly, it shouldn't impact the performance of the battery.
Yes that is a moisture indicator, but a little water shouldn't harm your battery. Mine turned pink from the 700% humidity we have here in the summers.

Ya I think my batteries may have gotten a little wet one day when they were in my backpack and it was raining on me and since then I kinda feel like they haven't been as great as before... but even the one that was in my phone hasn't been working so well either so it most likely is my phone I just have no idea what is it that's killing my battery.
Thanks for your replies.

batteries do degrade over time -- how long have you had the battery? there are many choices for battery replacements online as cheap as $5 depending on where you look.

NOT true... have you ever opened a battery to see the little ribbon with micro pieces on them? after a liquid is spilled on them it will corrode because there is no way of taking power away to let it dry the right way. if you get a battery damp there shouldn't be a problem. but wet and submerged are 2 different stories and you can risk frying your board from incorrect voltage being applied through the battery output.

Hence the reason I said "a little water". Obviously, submerging your phone for more than a second or 2 will lead to damage down the road, but getting a small amounts of liquid on a battery won't lead to immediate failure. RE: All of the people on here (including me) who have dropped their phone a pool, sink, toilet, etc and are still rocking the same phone.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2
I'd recommend just buying a new battery. I had my phone get completely wet before, I put both the phone and the battery in a ziplock bag full of rice and left it there for a couple days. Plugged the battery back in and it worked.
But buying a new battery would be the best bet to not further damage your phone.
I guess I will buy a new one just to test it out.
But I still feel like my phone is doing something wrong because I'm using my friends 3500mAh battery and it gives me the same results I used to get with my 1500 ones. I get a little more than 3 hours on screen time and about 20 hours total, which isn't so great for a 3500 battery. I'm gonna try going back to stock for a while and seeing what happens.

Waterdamaged Phone?

So my little sister dropped her phone in water the other day. It used to not power on whatsoever, then today I tried to turn it on and it sits at the HTC logo screen, nothing further. I can get it into the bootloader, but the recovery doesn't seem to load either. The bootloader is also locked. She didn't sync her contacts/calendar with Google properly, and has a lot of things she needs off of her calendar, so I'm wondering if there's a way to get this information seeing as I can't get onto the phone.
Any tips or suggestions would be greatly helpful, thanks.
If the hardware is damaged and nothing is backed up, you may be out of luck. Don't know if you've tried this yet, but pull the battery and leave the phone and battery in a sealed ziploc bag full of uncooked rice for at least 24-48 hours. After removing them, clean the contacts on the battery and phone with a pencil eraser, pop the battery back in and give it a try.

It's in rice right now, I'll leave it there for a day and try my luck out. She tried turning it on last night and it powered all the way on but the touch screen wasn't working. Are there actual file backups of the calendar and such that I could copy off of her phone on my computer if I need to?
The water will corrode copper and metal contacts over Time.. I just revived a laptop main board that got beer spilled alll over it and did nothing by submerging it in 91% rubbing alcohol.. it cleans and evaporates fast! Not joking, just dry in front of a fan or such
But if chips or hardware are borked, ur s.o.l

If the touch screen doesn't register touches after taking it out of the rice, it may be just that the digitizer needs to be replaced. If you are fairly competent with electronics and have a set of precision screwdrivers, replacing the digitizer is something that can easily be done for a fairly affordable price. You can buy the parts on Amazon or eBay, find a tutorial video on Youtube, and do the job yourself for less than $20.
