I am currently running the miui ics 4.0.3 from with the 2.3.16 update. since the new update.(2.3.23) is available, I'd like to update.
Question: when updating this rom, do i have to do a full wipe? (/data /system /cache /devlik)? Or is there an easier way of updating a from without loosing all data?

Alright so factory reset (data) along with devlik and cache? Would titanium backup restore the ROM back to most of its settings?

hi everyone!
i'm currently using Reflex S v1.9.41 Gingerbread 2.3.3 Rom and i would like to update to v1.9.5. what do i need to wipe without losing my data?
thanks in advance!
Updating to the same version does ot requires wipe
Okay, now serioulsly.
If you mean to update to 1.9.5 - just update... it's the same base, so should work.
However if you get a bootloop, you can try wiping cahce/dalvik cache.
Alternatively, backup stuff with TI backup.

rule of thumb is to try that first just wipe cache and update. if you phone acts up or if slow then you would have to do a full wipe.
I recommend a full wipe because the nitghlies contains lot of updates since the last cm7 stable release

i will try this in a few minutes thanks for the advise
I came from cm7 7.03 and just wiped cache, and dalvik, then flashed over to nightly 211, and have had no issues to date. Wiping cache, and dalvik works for me when flashing mightlies, just wipe both twice.

You're of the few lucky ones because that don't work for everyone

I am currently using CM9 on my GNex because it has a built-in Profiles management application in Settings.
Is this feature exclusive to CM? Do other ROMs have this feature? I have tried various market apps to replicate this functionality, but none of them seem to work the way the CM9 one does.
I thought I had seen someone using AOKP and it had this in his Settings, but when I tried to Flash that ROM, I got a ton of errors on reboot and didn't find Profiles in the Settings section either.
Also, as I am relatively new to Android (this is my first Android device), should I do a complete wipe data before installing a totally different ROM to avoid process errors? I am using Clockwork Mod recovery to flash ROMs and just performing the default "wipe Dalvik cache" before installing a new ROM. So far, the only ROM I am able to install/update is CM9. AOKP and Codename Android just gave me a ton of process errors after booting and were just unusable. As such, i am currently stuck using CM9, but have really bad wifi performance with it.
TIA!

Yes. Yes Yes Yes Yes. ALWAYS do a full data wipe when moving from one ROM to another ROM. You can sometimes get away with not wiping if you are simply upgrading to a newer version of the same ROM, but anytime that you run into issues after installing a new ROM please do make sure that you wiped data before posting/complaining about issues.
Thank you for your clarification. The next time I try a completely different ROM I will do a full data wipe. I assume flashing new Nightlies of the ROM I am already running doesn't require a full data wipe?
But can you or anyone else tell me if AOKP or any other ROMs have the "Profiles" feature in Settings, like CM9 does? Or is this exclusive to the CM9 ROM?
Thanks again.

I haven't seen it anywhere else, though AOKP does offer a Quiet Hours option.
THANK YOU!
Using your suggestion to do a wipe data when flashing a rom, I downloaded the latest CM9 nightly, and just installed it wiping both the data and cache.
After my initial setup and installing the speedtest app, my ping is back to normal at ~25ms and 15mb down and 2 up!
Do you always (or recommend) wipe the data even if you are just updating the current ROM?
Hopefully one of my other apps wasn't the cause of this issue, but I'll soon find out once I have re-installed everything.
Thanks again.

The ROM developer will usually state in the changelog / release notes if a wipe is required/recommended for an upgrade. Rule of thumb though:
1) Updating ROM to newer version, same Android release (ex: 4.0.3 -> 4.0.3) ==> No wipe
2) Updating ROM to newer version, different Android release (ex: 4.0.3 -> 4.0.4) ==> WIPE
3) Changing from one ROM to another ROM (CM9 -> AOKP) ==> WIPE
Interesting. After reinstalling my apps one by one, I've been running speedtest and found that Airsync/Doubletwist is the cause of my slowness. Uninstalling and rebooting fixes the speed/ping issue right away. Glad I bought this app. Not.

I'm fairly certain you can upgrade to newer preview without wiping your apps; just flash without wiping data beforehand. However, if you keep flashing without ever wiping data, you'll probably run into issues sooner or later and have to wipe data to fix... I'd recommend flashing version that comments say is safe, and only upgrading when you see a feature you really want added.
I've just been wiping dalvik for the last few updates. Probably will continue doing this until I have a problem.
Hi guys,
When updating a current rom from one build (8/20) to the next (8/25), will I have to do a full wipe/factory reset, wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache, or is it possible to just flash the newest update for this rom?
Thanks!

Its always the best to do a clean wipe so the new rom doesn't co-exist with the old bugs
Thank you!
One more question, when restoring a previous build, like a stock build or something, is it safe to go ahead and restore that rom, or do you also recommend wiping and going back to stock ICS and then restoring?
Or does wipe/factory reset basically put you back at un-root and stock ICS?
Still trying to understand all the lingo, thanks for the help.

If you are updating the same rom you don't have to do a full wipe. Just wipe cache and dalvik. AOKP --> AOKP is fine. CM10 nightly --> CM10 nightly is also fine.
If you are talking about a nandroid, you can restore those whenever you so choose. No prerequisite necessary.
