Can I flash a nightly over a stable cm7 and just wipe cache or do I need to do factory reset also?

rule of thumb is to try that first just wipe cache and update. if you phone acts up or if slow then you would have to do a full wipe.

I recommend a full wipe because the nitghlies contains lot of updates since the last cm7 stable release

i will try this in a few minutes thanks for the advise

I came from cm7 7.03 and just wiped cache, and dalvik, then flashed over to nightly 211, and have had no issues to date. Wiping cache, and dalvik works for me when flashing mightlies, just wipe both twice.

[Q] Flashing from CM7 nightlies to a different ROM?

Hi everybody....Ive been flashing ROMs from ROM Manager and never had problems...until I tried to flash from CM7 nightlies #66 to a leaked G2 ROM][04/28/11] TMOUS G2 Gingerbread 2.13.531.5.
I did the usual wipe cache and dalvik and proceeded, it seemed like it was downloaded but got stuck on the reboot, it was stuck on the HTC logo for a long time. I thought I bricked it but managed to get it to work by taking the batterie out and going into recovery by clockworkmod.
Is there any special way to flash ROMs from the nightlies on a G2?
You said you wiped cache and dalvik, but did you wipe data too(factory reset)? Pretty sure you need to do that if coming from cm to the stock tmo leak. Could be wrong but sounds about right

that is right anytime change roms that are not linear to the same dev, it is best to wipe all, data/factory/cache then flash rom

Hmm, I checked everything that ROM Manager suggested, cache/ dalvik, the only thing I didnt check is to back up current ROM.
If you wanna wipe all that data/factory/cache do yo have to flash it manually?
Flashing other roms I think messed up my phone lol. I just stay with cm7 now lol
Nonsense!

even if you did say to wipe /system and /data in addition to /cache, CWM is notorious for not actually formatting the partition. go into the dev section and find SuperwipeG2 and if you are switching from aosp<->sense or, as earlier mentioned, from one dev's rom to another, run superwipe before doing so.

three major problems

ok so heres the deal...
i downloaded htcclay supercm7 (latest version) from ROM manager premuim... flashed it and rebooted my phone... after 3 seconds i noticed three major problems:
1- where is the status bar? oh wait... "status bar not responding" oh... force close issue :S
2- i'll try fixing the status bar issue by rebooting... WHAT?? i can't turn off my phone... it reboots direcly into "google" splash screen!!
3- lockscreen gone!!
any ideas on how to fix these??
thank you!
PROBLEMS UPDATE:
just got to cyanogenmod settings, system, update nofication... when i click it... the settings force closes
its frustrating!!
Wipe. In either hboot or recovery. Whichever one you can get into. Flash something more reliable. A stable cm build. I'd say the latest nightly, but I don't want to sound like a broken record.
Never again load something from rom manager's list

LOL... ok
i reflashed the latest ILWT CM7 and everything went back to normal...
just one last question: i usually wipe dalvik cache and flash a ROM...
should i wipe data if i flash a new ROM?
and should i wipe data if i update a ROM?

General rule of thumb:
- when switching to an entirely different rom (or if you switch to a rom by a different developer, e.g. bulletproof miui to osimod miui) it's best (in many cases necessary) to do a full data/cache wipe
- when updating a rom one can generally assume to get by fine if only cache and dalvik are wiped, in this case extensive wiping should only be necessary if you encounter problems or the OP specifically tells you to do so.

Installing new version of CyanogenMod

I'm contemplating flashing the latest CM7 build.
At the moment I am running CyanogenMod-7.2.0-RC1-marvel-KANG on my Wildfire S
Does anyone know if I have to factory reset, wipe cache partition and wipe dalvik cache as if I was flashing an entirely different ROM? And will I have to reflash gapps as well?
I'd appreciate any advice on this.

I think you don't need to wipe anything bcos you are going to flash CM7 again, just newer version.
Gapps, I think you will have to reflash them
Go in cwm and install from zip. Or open the cyanogenmod zip with rom manager.
I flashed from 7.2rc1 to 7.2final a few days ago without reflashing gapps or wiping anything
Don't wipe anything. In cwm you will see it only updates your existing system.
But make an nandroid backup for sure

Updating from build-to-build question

Hi guys,
When updating a current rom from one build (8/20) to the next (8/25), will I have to do a full wipe/factory reset, wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache, or is it possible to just flash the newest update for this rom?
Thanks!

Its always the best to do a clean wipe so the new rom doesn't co-exist with the old bugs
Thank you!
One more question, when restoring a previous build, like a stock build or something, is it safe to go ahead and restore that rom, or do you also recommend wiping and going back to stock ICS and then restoring?
Or does wipe/factory reset basically put you back at un-root and stock ICS?
Still trying to understand all the lingo, thanks for the help.

If you are updating the same rom you don't have to do a full wipe. Just wipe cache and dalvik. AOKP --> AOKP is fine. CM10 nightly --> CM10 nightly is also fine.
If you are talking about a nandroid, you can restore those whenever you so choose. No prerequisite necessary.

[Q] updating a ROM to latest build

I'm using TeamCanjica CyanogenMod 10.2. Each time I've installed a new ROM on any device I've always gone for the full wipe and flash (Data/cache/davlik) but I am wondering if I am simply updating an existing version do I need to wipe data/factory reset?
This is the procedure I'd have thought would work:
Download latest zip (Only ROM? I already have the latest GAPPS)
boot into recovery
wipe cache + davlik
flash zip
wipe cache + davlik
reboot
Would this update work and keep all my data/settings etc or would this likely cause problems with the build? If it wouldn't work is there a way to update without losing everything?
Cheers
