GSM against CDMA - HTC Wildfire S

How can you tell the difference? Sorry for being a noob.
EDIT - Noob not noon
Sent from my HTC Wildfire S A510e using XDA

By carrier. Virgin Mobile, MetroPCS, and US Cellular are all CDMA phones.
Another way to tell is to turn off your phone and pull the battery. Replace the battery and hold Volume Down and Power until you boot into "hboot". At the top, it should say in the second or third line that it is "MARVEL", "MARVELC", or "MARVELCT".
Marvel=GSM
Marvelc=CDMA
Marvelct=China's CDMA
Although, from your XDA app signature, I can already tell that you have a GSM phone. (A510e)

Also, sim card = gsm, no sim card = CDMA

In addition, in the US, T-Mobile is the GSM carrier
Also, the GSM was released earlier, therefore there are more ROMs for the GSM variant (Marvel, A510a/e). The CDMA WFS (Marvelc/ct, A510c) was released later (Around Late October/Early November 2011). There are fewer ROMs and it has been slightly harder to develop for, from what I have noticed.
Also, the CDMA variant has S-OFF already. GSM does not yet have S-OFF, but the very talented developers are working on it in this thread: http://cleanimport.xda/index.php?threads/1374926/

for unlocked gsm phones, you can just put in ay sim card and the phone will work
but for cdma, you have to activate it online or at the store or somewhere

Yes, you should go with what bobdamnit said. Also, what's a "noon"?

I guess that wasn't written clearly. I meant that CDMA has S-OFF available already. As in the ability and tutorials existed.

I've cdma for Vm but I've S-ON and my new degitizer doesn't work

Technically the CDMA2000 standard does include SIM cards (called CSIMs), but they're an optional part of the spec and aren't used by any north american carrier that I know of.

Not really. CDMAone/CDMA2000 only ever really took off in North America, for a few reasons, notably that SIMless CDMA makes for really easy lock-in and also CDMA is cheaper to deploy in rural areas due to the no limit on physical cell size (previously, a GSM cell had a maximum radius of 35km, imposed by its used of TDMA.), resulting in the need for fewer towers.
Globally, CDMAone/CDMA2000 make up less than 10% of the market.

What are GSM and CDMA ?

I see these words on some threads in development section. Could you please tell What are they ?
It's a network, GSM is 2G and CDMA is 3G. Correct me if I'm wrong.

GSM now more describes a umbrella of generations rather than specifically 2G I reckon.
To the OP thought GSM and CDMA are simply terms used to describe different systems used for mobile phone networks.
GSM is the more popular.

GSM is more popular outside of the US. CDMA is used by most US cell providers.
cdma is mostly provider verizon
Difference between GSM and CDMA
In cellular service there are two main competing network technologies: Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA).
Both boast "3G" standards, or 3rd generation technologies.
Only GSM phones use SIM cards. CDMA carriers require proprietary handsets that are linked to one carrier only and are not card-enabled (for the most part).

At& t and t-mobile usethe gsm system.
Sprint and verizon use cdma.
The two frequencies are incompatible.

Hence why it'd be more popular as the rest of the world is evidently bigger than the US. Also it's actually more popular and practical as you can use phones ( that are GSM ,) anywhere , with any carrier in the entire world , provided you just unlock your phone of course, so .. Practicality = GSM, usability = GSM, freedom= GSM , better phones actually = GSM.

[Q] HTC Desire in China

Hi all,
I've recently moved to China and taken my Desire with me. I had assumed I could just unlock it and use a chinese sim but it doesnt seem to be working. From what i've read on various sites it seems China telecom (who are my new provider) use CDMA(?) and Evo-do(?). I'm not going to pretend to understand what these terms mean.
Does anyone know if there is a rom i can flash which will allow me to use the desire on this network? Failing that I do have a chinese lenovo a68e but all of the sites i've found for it so far are in chinese so if anyone can point me in the direction of a custom rom for it (english please ) which i can use i would also be grateful but i would much prefer to get my desire working.
Any help or advice you could give is very much appreciated.
Sorry mate, I'm guessing you have a GSM device (it have a sim card in it). GSM and CDMA are two completely different technologys, they have different hardware in them, that's why CDMA users brick there phones if they flash a GSM ROM. I don't think there is a way to just change GSM into CDMA by flashing a Rom.

Thanks for the quick reply
My new phone has a sim card just like a uk one. I'll be honest and say I don't know much about any of this stuff but i've found good advice on this site and used roms and things found here before.
Are there CDMA sim cards and GSM sim cards?
It not problem in sim cards CDMA and GSM are network technologies, you have to buy CDMA phone(for example CDMA htc Desire). No ROM can help you. Here's more on CDMA and GSM.(link)
If you have a GSM device, China Mobile shall you go.
no, the difference is in hardware level, u can't do nothing

there is no "cdma" sim....this phone is marketed as a "world phone" buy running on verizons cdma network, while having a gsm sim slot to either run the included verizon/vodafone sim on gsm networks or to unlock the phone and run a different networks simcard
off the top of my head, droid 2 global, htc merge (never sold by verizon but available to 3rd party retailers) are other android vzw "world" phones
thanx dudes for getting me to the straight.
Can anyone list all the worldphones by Verizon or share the link of Verizon Worldphone page?
Also if possible share the forum thread of that Chinese ROM.
<offtopic> In India CDMA operators are based on RUIM cards (similar to SIM of GSM), hence unlocking the bands means hassle-free freedom to choose any CDMA operator any time!

I'm pretty sure all new Verizon LTE phones are unlocked because that was an agreement made with the FCC during the 700MHz spectrum auction. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't think the Sim card is unlocked... Its the phone itself. You'd need to get a Sim over where you are going.

Apologies. I meant that the SIM card slot was carrier unlocked, not the SIM card itself. Naturally you would have to purchase a SIM at the destination.

Verizon 4G LTE devices are unlocked out of the box
One thing to note here in terms of software phone locks is that all Verizon 4G LTE smartphones come unlocked out of the box. The reason why is that the spectrum Verizon is using to build its 4G LTE network had restrictions put on it by the Federal Communications Commission, which required the company to allow "open access" to the network. So as part of this provision, Verizon has decided not to lock those devices. That said, its 3G devices are locked.
So what does this mean for the average consumer? Let's take the iPhone 5 as an example. It's a 4G LTE device. A Verizon version of this phone comes unlocked out of the box. There aren't special codes that need to be entered in order to use it on another carrier's network. But because of the spectrum differences I mentioned above, a Verizon iPhone 5 won't operate on AT&T's LTE network. It will operate on AT&T's 3G network, which is based on GSM. So this means you can use the Verizon iPhone on AT&T, but you won't get the fastest Internet speeds on it.
The same is true if you take the Verizon iPhone 5 to Europe. You can swap out the SIM card and put in another carrier's SIM card, but the device will operate only on a GSM-based 3G network. And it won't operate on a faster LTE network.
And even though the phone is unlocked and uses the same CDMA technology and some of the same radio frequency channels as Sprint, an unlocked iPhone 5 won't operate on Sprint.

WiFi calling on non-branded M8

I'm considering switching from ATT, but my understanding is that wifi calling is only available with TMO branded phones. Mine is the factory unlocked model (BS_US001/0P6B12000). I'm SuperCID, so was wondering if I could emulate a TMO phone by flashing their RUU. Would I have to change my MID (if that is even possible)?

There are a few custom ROMs that allow TMO WiFi calling. I know, and have tested, both Viper and Sky Dragon. While they are obviously not stock, they both work on my BS_US002.
Just flash T-MO RUU after SuperCid'ing. I have the same terminal and got around that issue following those steps!. Remember to do your backups.

Taking about me. Cuz I'm vzw and AT&T is gsm. I forgot bout that, duh... But I am able to run gsm type Rom with little to no problem....I'm just looking to see how I can enable all gsm lte bands for use. I try to drive and between towers I lose signal and can't reconnect, so I either have to toggle airplane to get it back, or just use hspa. It runs ok... But I'd like to get full potential.

A Cdma varient never can be full potential of the gsm varient. i use to have the sprint varient and i unlocked it to tmobile, yes it worked, but it wouldnt stay connected to tmobile, i would constantly have to manually search for tmobile network, so if i never looked at my phone it would just disconnect by itself, i received calls fine but text messages would come once i connected to tmobile again.
plus the hardware is just not capable of all the gsm bands, so to get full potential, sell it and get a gsm one
