Wanting to try something new besides Caulkin's GB rom
Depends on what you are looking for.
For AOSP I would suggest that you go with AOKP. As for TouchWiz probably go with The Blu Kuban or Mijjz Blend (ICS versions of course)

You do realize you can get a vote for every rom out there... Don't waste your time on here waiting for someone to tell you what to do. Just read up on them all and decide which one you want to try.. Then try them all if you like

+1 I personally have tried most and they all have pros/cons. I got addicted to the tablet ui in HyDrA, but its not for everyone. Just try each one your interested in and go back to which ever one YOU prefer.

I would have to agree with the Hydra rom it is sick! By far my favorite. Anyone that hasnt tried it really owes it to themselves to do so.

Did you download it from your phone or pc? I have had bad luck trying to download roms from my phone but have not bricked yet (knock on wood)
If you want to get an idea of what some of the ROMs are about before you flash them, then take a look at some of qbking77's review videos.
I just flashed sfhub's fe10, liking it so far, but my favorite so far had been calkulin's e4gt2 series...version 1.5 is fd26 and is a very stable and smooth rom.
Edit: i agree with binary though, check out qbking77's reviews-they're super helpful
If it wasn't for qbking77 & zedomax on youtube, I'd STILL be scared to attempt rooting! I personally have tried a LOT of ROMs: Blazer, Calkulin's E4GT2, CM9 Alpha 3, Nocturnal Venum before finally settling on Blu Kuban ICS FE10 (love the blue & black combo). It comes with an updater built-in & everything is working (hotspot included). Just make sure u follow the videos to the LETTER when installing any ROM! I luv my phone (never said THAT before!)
+1 on the kuban it runs very smooth battery life is awesome.Rujelus22 is on his game with this one the blue theme is very detailed and everything works.

I recommend AOKP or CM9. Both are AOSP based with AOKP being closer to pure Android 4.0. That said, it helps to just try out what is available and see what works for you.

Is stock ROM official ICS update or GB?
I got this phone 2 months and bounced around between Darkside, stock ICS rooted, and AOKP. I've flashed Eugene's streamlined kernel to AOKP. And I think that's where I'm staying. I love the ui changes and inbuilt cpu control. And with Groove IP I can do without native wifi calling. My advice is to try them each for a few days, even ones I didn't mention like cm9, and decide what fits your needs.

That's because 0623-03 IS Build 39, assuming you are referring to Whitehawkx's AOKP. Hercules is officially supported by Team Kang now, so you can get Build 40 from here:

Kernel overclocking
I'm using Darkside TLLE4.V1 and the 3.0.8-perf-T989DTTLE4-CL579656 kernel. Way good. One question though: I come the cpu is not overclockable over 1.5 ? I thought this kernel was open to overclocking, I would like to boost it up to 1.8. Any ideas?

it looks like there are a bunch of darkside roms/kernels. which one are you using?
This may have been addressed before but for some reason I can not find an answer. I have tried AOKP and CM9 and I am having problems with the external SD card not being recognized by several apps (beyondpod is the main one). There is a setting for using the external only but then most of my games (EA titles) will not open. Is there anything that can be done? I am currently using Chicago rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1602332 and it seems to work correctly but I would like to start using the CM9 nightly builds. Thanks in advance.
Just got my wife an Epic Touch 4G, I wanted to install CM9 on it, but I don't see it anywhere? I want something stable, with good battery life. What ROMS do you recommend ? can be TW/AOSP, as long as its STABLE and everything works. Shes rocking stock ICS on it now.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1815854
I use that rom as my dd. Its calk's worked baked in to ff18 with some other stuff. Its almost stock feel. Most bloat removed. Ton of mods.
There is another awesome rom called blu kuban. Not sure if it fits your needs. Its super themed with awesome blue and black colors. Has its own kernel with a ton of cpu tweaks. Blu kuban is like the ultimate rom.

You could also try the "black" ROM, it's very stable and has a great battery life. It is off of ff18 right now but is going to move to fh13 soon.
Its funny how much this question gets asked. I would read up thoroughly on how to flash Roms and root or whatever it is you you want to do and go to the development section read about what is going on and how to install whatever ROM you want to try and try it, see how it works for you and if you don't like take it off. Trial and error is your best bet just make sure you aren't blindly flashing and installing stuff if you don't know what you are doing. Qbking77 has a lot of helpful videos on YouTube also.

The reason we started making our own ROMs was the instabilities, short-comings, and plain mistakes made by SamSprint in the stock ROMs.. you know, like the eMMC brick bug? That's a far cry from stable imo..

Do you like ics or jb? If you prefer jb it is still have some bug but a lot new feature, so if you don't mind then try jb.
But if not try cm9 rc4 it is the most stable ics of all. And you can find other ics based rom that is been customized either. Just try some man, you can even know if yoy didn't try. After all rom is just personal preference

I'd recommend you to stick with CyanogenMod 9 as it's the cleanest ROM out there. No mods/scripts/tweaks so you have the freedom to flash whatever you want. And you're gonna get the updates first too as the other ROMs are based on CM9 and it takes a day or a week for them to update to the latest release.

I've seen several posts by people looking for kernels for TW ROM's and even more so with some multicarrier ports coming over. I won't post the download links as it is expected for those who download to read the OP's and please thank all of these guys(gals) for their hard work. These all work on 4.1.1 and 4.1.2 stock based ROM's and I've tested almost all of them on the sprint and verizon based ROM's. This is mainly for reference and if a new one comes out let me know and I will add it.
Here is the stock in CWM or TWRP flashable form:
http://d-h.st/O12
(App made me name is but it is just the pure stock kernel)
THESE ARE NOT FOR CUSTOM (i.e. aosp, CM, AOKP, etc) ROMS
Be sure to make sure you perform a nandroid backup before you start flashing kernels.
I generally wipe cache/davlik and then flash in custom recovery. This is a general rule of thumb but make sure you read the dev's instructions as they may differ.
