I'm trying to root my brothers Evo again and running into some problems.
Back story: I had rooted his device with Revolutionary and he was running CM7 just fine. He started to have troubles with his screen so we unrooted it and got S-ON back. He took his phone to Sprint and instead of replacing the device, they decided to just replace the screen on it.
Current story: Downloaded Revolutionary and ran it and got this;
Code:
=============================================
| Revolutionary S-OFF & Recovery Tool 0.4pre4 |
=============================================
Brought to you by AlphaRev & unrEVOked.
Waiting for device...
Found your device: PC36100 (supersonic-6.17.0001, Android: 2.3.3, ROM version: 4.53.651.1)
Your device is already S-OFF, what exactly do you think you're doing? Not setting S-OFF.
Do you want to download (Internet connection required) and flash ClockworkMod Recovery? [Y/ny
Downloading recovery for your phone (supersonic)...Done.
Rebooting to fastboot...
Flashing recovery over fastboot...INFOsignature checking...
FAILED. Unable to flash recovery. Please download custom recovery yourself and flash it over fastboot.
So here I am with the HBOOT saying that S-ON and Revolutionary telling me it's off and won't turn it off.
Not sure where to go from here!?
Thanks!
When it tells you that your Device is already S-OFF, you should have an option to turn it off regardless.
If that doesn't work, I guess you could try and use another method to do it.
and if THOSE don't work, I guess you could just sbf flash it it
I don't have an option to turn it off regardless.. it finds the device and logs the fact it thinks S-OFF is present and asks to download the recovery.
I thought revolutionary was the only option for HBOOT 1.6 at this point. Is this incorrect?
Also what do you mean by sbf flash it?

You didn't do the last step after getting S-ON, which is flashing a stock ROM. Because of your HBOOT version, Revolutionary thinks you're already S-OFF. You need to flash a stock ROM to normalize your HBOOT version, and then Revolutionary will work.
He cannot flash a stock ROM if he is S-ON. Sbf basically resets everything on your phone back to its "out of the box" state
@Druke, can you get to recovery? If there is no recovery you may want to RUU back to 4.54 then try revolutionary again. Or just go through the un-rooting steps again.

Just remember to not do any updates after RUU'ing back to 4.54! Then you'll have to use other methods to unlock and revert. Good luck.

This is incorrect. You can flash a signed HTC stock ROM in PC36IMG format (or RUU on a PC for that matter) just fine. As I said, that's the last necessary step to returning the device to stock conditions. Trust me, I've done it probably almost 100 times.
P.S. Since I'm the one that came up with the unrooting method that was used, I would know .
I did try an RUU yes. I will need to try an RUU again. The one I used must have been unsigned or unofficial somehow. Anyone help me out? With the megaupload thing it seems all the links around here have dried up. Thanks!

The unrooting Revolutionary root link in my sig has links to some PC36IMG zips that can be flashed in bootloader.
I recommend the 4.54 version. Sometimes it won't work if you're using a version that's too old, or if your SD card isn't a high capacity card or got corrupted somehow.

4.54 RUU or PC36IMG is the most likely to work, however, 4.24 and 4.53 contain the same HBOOT needed for Revolutionary to work again as well.

I tried grabbing the 4.54 version from you post however the link to it is dead.
Got dropbox?

It shouldn't be - I refreshed those links earlier today and changed them to 4shared. When did you last try?
So weird.. works now! Thanks a ton! I'll give it a shot this weekend. Hopefully everything goes aces!
Thanks again.
After using HTC tool to unlock bootloader, my device boots up and my bootloader is locked, Hboot at 1.02. I tried several times and it's now unlocked, but still S-ON. Then, I try to root it using dozens of methods. Finally, my rom is rooted now with super user inside app drawer. However, I can't flash cwm, or new Roms. My recovery shows system 3e, which always check signature of update.zip when flashing. It was 2e as I remembered.
Maybe I am the first one using the Espresso that face this, anyone has any idea about this. I've read through all the threads here, but no help...:-(
go to adb, then boot into fastboot and type "fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-3.0.0.1-espresso.img" or whatever cwm u download. then flash any rom and you are good to go. Make sure you paste that cwm.img in the correct folder for your adb. Let me know if it works.
Gonna try it and report soon sir.

Well the first thing you have to do in the unrooting procedure is downgrade the misc partition so you don't get that message . It's all outlined there nicely, and if you have any questions, it might be easier for you to post over there - they're all very helpful .

Thanks again for the help. Everything went good with achieving the "locked oow" but the only problem im presenting is being able to flash the pc36img file due to the fact that i have to press up in order to update. My volume up button is broken (second time with in a month) which is why im taking my phone into sprint. Im downloading and RUU from rootzwiki to see if im able to flash back to the stock unrooted rom from there or by recovery. Thanks again.

If you do an "adb reboot bootloader", and then run the RUU from your PC, you shouldn't have to press any buttons on the device.

There are no commands to run an RUU from the PC - you just double-click it.
Thats where my problem was, the "RUU" I downloaded from the first thread you mentioned was in .zip format not .exe but all is good now, fully unrooted and back to original crappy malfunctioning 2.3.5  thanks again for your help and puttin up with my noobness

hey guys i had to unroot my evo with the unrooting method mentioned above, but i messed up and flashed the s-on and flashed an RUU b4 downgrading the misc partition. The phone also installed the 5.07 OTA with the stock recovery. The phone says it has "s-on" but the hboot is 6.17 and i cannot get it to update back to 2.18, everytime i try to RUU again, i get a error 140 saying bootloader version error. I tried to root again using revolutionary and i get told that the s is already off and get asked to install a custom recovery and that fails every time. i tried to install amon ra via pc36img method in bootloader and it does nothing. i tried using unrevoked since my phone says its hboot 2.16 and unrevoked fails and says my firmware is too new. I tried using htc dev to achieve root again and the cmd gives me an error every time i try to get the code from my phone. i made a booboo and i cant root nor update and i gotta return my phone to sprint since i upgraded my phone to a diff phone. Any ideas guys?

WHAT?? I'm lost. First you said your Hboot is 6.17, then you said your phone says it has Hboot 2.16.
Sounds like your misc partition is screwed up from the different Hboots that your phone had, especially from the 5.07 OTA. If that's the case, there is no current RUU that will work for that (the 5.07 misc). It's there to prevent you from downgrading. You will need the Tacoroot method in order to downgrade your misc partition so that you can run your RUU again. It will give you a temp root so that you can run adb commands to downgrade that misc partition. It's in the rooting method guide from Captain Throwback's link above.

My apologies, i was in a rush earlier. My hboot is 6.17, not 2.16. I tried unrooting and did for the most part except getting hboot back to 2.18. In this process, the phone forced itself to update to the new 5.07 OTA that there is no RUU for so im screwed to that end. I am currently trying Tacoroot method but am having issues being stuck at the sprint screen bootloop so i cant run the flash_image command from the sdcard (since the phone isnt starting fully for it to be in "charge only mode"). Seems alot of ppl have that same issue but havent found a solution yet. Not sure if i just start over if it bootloops or not. I've tried 3 complete times now and still get stuck on the bootloop.
Ouch, that sucks. If you cannot boot into the operating system, then there might not be anything that you can do.

i can boot into the phone, its just when doing the tacoroot method, i cannot get past the step where the phone goes into the loop and you have to enter 3 commands.

i just stumbled over this method.. unrevoked web site has a s-on tool, go to there site ://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever you will see the blah blah blah tutorial.. scroll down until you get down to:
How can this be removed or undone if I need to take my phone in for service?
Download the latest ''S-ON'' tool to a temporary location and follow the installation instructions above to run it. Once your phone is S-ON, you may lose root permanently if you install an official update.. download it to your phone.. recovery mode.. flash from zip.. poof.. S-ON
now head over to htcevohacks, ://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-hacks/how-to-unroot-your-htc-evo-4g/ get htc update rom utility for your phone.. that erases entire phone and and places sprints latest stock factory rom and everything back on your phone.. do all sprint updates.. and return to sprint and recieve your refurbished motorola photon.. sprint htc evo 4g has been dissed-continued.. oh yeah if you dont do it in that order.. you will loose your root with update utility.. which means you will have to use unrevoked3 to reroot and flash s-on tool .. done the right way its only two steps.. peace out
G'day Guys,
I am trying to root my desire HD. currently 2.3.5
I initially followed the HTCDEV method
For my phone which downloaded the RUU program. PD9810000_Ace_Sense30_S_hboot_2.00.0029.exe
this is for Desire HD Vodaphone australia.
I ran the RUU successfully once. It supposedly upgraded the image from 2.12.178.2 to 3.13.0.0
apon rebooting into the fastboot screen as per the HTCDEV instructions when attempting to fastboot I recieved errors saying
"no image or wrong image" or something to that effect.
at this point I went back to the drawing board and tried the HOW TO ROOT WITHOUT HACK KIT thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2168500) method and script for unlocking the bootloader. which downloaded the same RUU program
apon running it this time it still wished to updrade from 2.12.178.2 to 3.13.0.0 and i recieved the error
ERROR [191]: Rom is not supported
I have searched several threads with this error however none of them seemed to have a solution ie.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2264987
I cannot locate and temporary ROM zips as per this thread below.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21231962
EDIT Just found and am re-naming the rom zip as PD98IMG.zip then copying it to sd card root folder.
will update thread with result. apologies again
Appologies for the first thread question and its length.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks and Regards
Ben
So I renamed the rom.zip file copied it to the root folder of the SD card.
booted into fast boot. updated
it said "parsing bootloader complete"
however the phone still appears to be 3.12.178.2 ...
the next step
step 8
htcdev[dotcom]/bootloader/unlock-instructions/page-3
"fastboot oem get_identifier_token"
wont run as it sits there <waiting for device>
if I run the RUU again it still says need to update to 3.13 and that its error 191 invalid rom.
help guys

The top part, the one where you say RUU, that's not a RUU, that just simply updates the HBOOT.
You need to follow this guide.

thanks all for the help so far its been great
FYI I completed step 1 from this site http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f66...-os-s-off-change-imei-cid-hxc-dongle-1548982/
1.root ur phone :for root u mus unlock boot loader with htcdev/bootloader
hboot 2.00.0029 support token key for unlock bl 2.00.0027 stok not support
u must update hboot to 2.00.0029:
download this rom copy to your c:\ drive so download this dhd update hboot by behtash.rar
and run hboot update by behtash.bat in normal mode ,waiting until flash hboot complete
ok u can now unlock bl with htcdev.com\bootloader
however it would not unlock on htcdev it just sat there saying [waiting for device]
I think my fastboot program may be the issue due to it being the same 69k version that this chap had an issue with

3. Download rooted stock rom: http://www.multiupload.nl/20T9R21IGY
(link to rom thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...t=rooted+stock )
copy the ROM zip file to your SD card.
as per http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2221039
or can I go straight to download a newer rom. a 4.2 or something and continue on the process
Ok, where I am at.
I have flashed the stock rooted rom as per the guide.
it works fine and has root access.
I didnt go through the process for S-OFF from step 6 onwards as I got a little lost what i needed to do as I had already done some of the goldcard steps. either way.
I am currently unlocked and rooted. with 2.3.5 stock rooted rom.
I tried to install a cryogenmod rom and jellytime rom.
as per this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1866122
I installed them from the cwm recovery then tried to "flashboot flash boot boot.img" with their respective boot.img.
both roms didnt progress past the htc boot screen they just black screened.
can anyone hint why these roms wouldnt load? is it an s-on issue? or am i lost with the boot.img or missing another step?
i have reloaded the stock rooted image using cwm and flashboot flash boot boot.img
Thanks all

Ah appologies I am blind today.
No error msgs. Boot.IMG is coppied over as it is when I do it with the rooted stock Rom.
Just when rebooting afterwards. The phone does its .HTC flash screen for like 30 secs then it goes to a black screen (phone on) indefinitely.
The process I am using is
1 zip Rom on sdcard.
2 cwm delete user data
3 cwm install zip image from sdcard which works
4 reboot
5 fastboot USB
6 from pc: fastboot flash boot boot.IMG (extracted from Rom zip)
Am I doing anything incorrectly or missing a step.
Rooted, unlocked bootloader s-on
Thanks all
Is the phone in fastboot? What ROM? What recovery version?

The phone was in fastboot USB
The working Rom is the one listed shoved from the full root sticky..3.12.405.1 rooted by nitr00
The 2 Roms that failed were jellytime and cryogen. Either the current or most recent stable apparently
Recovery is cwm. It's a slightly older version I think though. It was the only one I could find at the time.
Maybe 2. Something. I'll reboot now and check. Could that be an issue?
Bootloader unlocked
Hboot 2.00.0029
Radio 26.14.04.28m
Cwm recovery v 2.5.1.2
Yay just tried with the latest version of CWM and it works... FFS why wouldnt I have used the current version.
anyway I am playing with 4.2.2 jelly time now.
Thanks so much every contributor. your replies helped me keep going.
Hey guys! So my cousin bought this used Desire HD. Its running 2.2 Froyo.
So here is the list of the problems:
1. When downloading from Google Play it does not download the app but it can browse. It gives a "Error : No Connection" in the status bar.
2. It should update to 2.3.3 but it says im already updated.
3. Tried factory resetting 2 times. Same thing.
4. Also one weird thing. I live here in Pakistan, so YouTube is blocked here. But the phone does browse YouTube? (it cant open the video though). Some kind of ROM problem i guess so.
What should i do to resurrect this problem? Thank you! Its the International version. "HTC Desire HD A9191".
Also the Serial number is SH11JRX08759

You could try unlocking the bootloader, root, and install a 4.2.2 custom rom. This will void the warranty but it may be the only way to fix the problem.
Update : so i went into the bootloader. And its pretty strange. Its S-OFF but not rooted :/ that is a really strange issue. Also i have noted the signals to be a bit more weaker.. Can somebody guide me from here?
Here r the pics btw

Power off the phone. When it is off, hold down the volume down button and press the power button. This should get you into the HBoot screen. At the top of the screen, it will either say "UNLOCKED" or "LOCKED". If it is unlocked that's great. If it's not unlocked, look at the HBoot line to make sure the HBoot version on your phone can be unlocked. If it can, just follow the guide posted in this forum to install a 4ext custom recovery to flash custom roms.

There are lots of problems in this phone. Like every minute i find a new bug. Can someone please guide me in flashing the stock rom? Or if possible. ROOT it and put some sense 4.1 ROM? That should be 100% stable though. Since this phone is for my little cousin. Thanks. Will appreciate the helping hand

root it with z4root, and use the one click eng s-off.I also had a phone brought in the other day, same thing. You must root it with z4root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
download that , run it, temporary root.Enable USB debugging, connect the cable
http://cloud.addictivetips.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/EasyS-OFF_05.zip
download that, extract the folder on your desktop or wherever possible, make sure you have ADB drivers installed, run desire hd easy s-off.exe,
and click s-off.It will flash the HBOOT and you're good to go.Make sure you disable fastboot afterwards.(settings>power)
Flash the latest radio found somewhere around here, it will help for GPS connection in newer ROMs.

You need the ENG S-OFF in order to use any actual commands/flash anything. Also rooting won't fix the play store problem, you must change ROM.If I may recommend, SVHD for a sense rom, or CM10.1 for that clean look.

Ok I am going to Temporary Root my DHD by Z4Root
Keep in touch kind sir I will update u the details
Unlock your bootloader first via htc dev. just follow the intructions in htcdev
Note: You need to update your bootloader first
- if the ruu in htcdev runs and update your bootloader, then your good to go
- if not or error appears, then create a goldcard (Instruction can be found somewhere here)
copy the updated hboot zip file to the root of your card and flash the zip file in recovery
then go back to unlocking your bootloader via htcdev
once unlock use the easyaceroottool to root your phone
-this will automatically flash the clockword recovery then you can flash any custom rom that you want.:fingers-crossed:

he doesn't need to update the hboot, he can easily flash the engineering one and do it a way lot easier.
I am doing what Steam. has said. but since I am running Windows 8, I am encountering some .NET Framework issue unfortunately. trying to resolve them first :/
OK I finally got the .NET Framework working. Gonna try out the process (Gonna read the ENG S-OFF) Obviously
what the?
It says "Bootloader Corrupt. DO NOT REBOOT. Seek help from XDA" :s :s

In the old thread that was here many people rebooted straight away with no problems, they had S-OFF.
Example:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19911066&postcount=755
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17336292&postcount=721
just make sure you have a custom ROM ready to be flashed, do not boot the stock again once you reboot to bootloader.Flash 4EXT recovery, you can find the recovery .img here
just DL a ROM of your choice and flash it afterwards.
