Does Nandroid Backup Radio? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i want to flash a new radio onto my phone but just want to double check if a nadroid backup backs up the radio too?

no pretty sure it dosent, check an old backup and see whats in there to be sure

Ok, also, when I change my radio, do I need to change my rll?

try it both ways and see what works best. so far im on testing my third radio, a couple days with out replacing the files and a couple days with them replaced. so far havent found much of a difference between reception or battery life or internet speeds. this of course is somewhat unique to me as others swear replacing the lib-ril files makes a difference.
id just say dont for the first few days then replace and compare

It does not backup your radio, no.
You should change your radio to match your current rils, rather than the other way around. There is an automatcher in the the development section.
Changing your radio to match your rils may or may not affect reception or battery life, but I am almost certain it will remove echoes if that is a constant problem in phone calls for you on your rom.

Again just my findings, no echos when I change radios without changing ril files or when I match them. Again have only tried 3 radios so far and no one has proved any better then the next. But I also haven't traveled to far away from home over the past few weeks that I have been doing testing. And I have always had amazing reception and such with any device. Right now I'm in my basment where many on other carries can't even get a phone call. Have 3 bars and just ran speedtest getting over 3mbps. Same finding as always

Noobs,and Everyone Alike(Update Your Radio)

I know a lot of you out there are obviously updating to newer, cooked ROMs. This by far is the best bet when spending the kind of money we are on these phones. You get much more out of your new phone than it is capable of doing from the factory or retail store.
I want to instill in everyone's mind how truly important it is to check out the new radios available for the phone. It takes literally 5 minutes or less start to finish to flash a new radio. You won't lose your newly flashed ROM or any settings that I have found. So, please take notice to my advice. Below is the link for all the newly updated radios for our device. Check out a few of them and make some calls, use your gps. I believe you will be much happier with a new radio, because frankly the stock radios are garbage.
My call signal strength is maxed out in my home whereas it only had 2-3 bars before. My gps doesn't lag behind me anymore, and My Location works perfectly since flashing a new radio. So, try one out. It definitely can't hurt. Below is the link to the thread with all of the newer radios. ENJOY!!!

He mentioned in another thread that the radio he flashed to is the one ending in .57, and that's the one I'd suggest you start with. I happen to have it already because it's the one that comes with the stock T-mo 6.5 ROM...but if you've running any ROM's with a different radio, you'll want to give this one a shot. A few other T-mo users have reported good results with the .77 radio, but I'd still start with the .57 if you haven't already.
thanks outerdepth...
I have always figured I should update my radio, but never bothered/got around to it. Your post re-motivated me, so I updated from .25 to .77 and...
100% improvement!!
My gps accuracy used to be off by about a city block, which I attributed to the fact that 'oh well its a cel phone, what can I expect', now is accurate within a meter or two.
My data speeds are much improved, and I dunno if its my imagination or not, but calls even seem clearer and have a better sound quality to them.
Dont know about battery drain yet, but its not really important to me cause I'm a truck driver, so I can leave my phone plugged in most of the time in the truck
Thanks!!
So this might be a dumb question but are these radio updates official? They overwrite ROM so I'm kinda always wary to ever try this. I have the official HTC ROM from their website and I assume you can flash it back but I'm not sure.
The ROM will stay, all your contacts/text/etc will stay, and you SHOULD NOT have to worry about losing anything. You can use a program like SPB Back Up or Sprite back up if you are worried though.

The thread about TP2 Radios tells you how to choose the ones that will work for you, just look for the ones that say AT&T and start there.

The radio-roms are "official". However, in order to flash one you have to first do the HardSPL, which isn't official....and may not be completely reversible, depending on what carrier-branded (if any) phone you have.
The only reason this SPL issue may matter is if you have to return for warranty return. If they swap the phone for you in a store then surely nobody in a store will know the difference...but if you have to send it to HTC then non-stock tampering may be evident.
That being said, it hasn't stopped me from taking full benefit of what this site has to offer and make full use of what is possible with my TP2.
Good advice for everyone.
Some of the newer cooked roms require a particular radio...or at least will work best with a particular radio. Before flashing any new rom, read to see if the chef suggests a certain one.

No, the security lock only prevents you from switching carriers. Shouldn't affect the radio.
And in any case the phone doesn't have to be unlocked to install a custom ROM, it has to have a different hard SPL.

[Q] Wanting to flash new radio on the Tmobile G2.

I want to flash a new radio to my T-Mobile G2 but i am Really scared on which one i can and cannot flash because they can brick my phone. Any Suggestions and or comments/advice? I have read over the offical Radio Thread and cannot find anything to specify which is which. Thanks in advance
-Chris
Im fairly certain that all the radios so far in the Radio Thread can be used with the G2, I myself have used these three:
Vision_RADIO_12.28e.60.140f_26.04.02.17( best results for me with this one)
Vision_RADIO_12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26
Vision_TMOUS_RADIO_12.21.60.09b_26.02.01.15 (G2)
don't worry as long as you have prem root and s-off with eng-hboot you should be fine flashing a radio. I was able to flash it using PC10IMG way and it worked fine lol

Thanks for the quick response! Is "Vision_RADIO_12.28e.60.140f_26.04.02.17" the best one so far to use? I just flashed it and everything went okay but i cant really see if it improved anything.... :/
Well there's a new one out but its not posted in the offical radio thread yet (maybe it is haven't check yet lol). Well for me I mainly saw a diffrence with the signal bar never going to zero. Most of the time its 1-3 bars at the 1st floor of my house and on the second floor I get about full bars at the most. Oh yea for some reason I saw that my wifi was stronger to but don't know if the radio fixed that to

I flashed the new radio and RiL files, this was about a week ago and I have to say the battery life as well as the signal and data is far better. The GPS is more stable than ever. I am one happy noob. LOL Thanks for the instructions and the links.

Whether a particular radio improves reception (and therefore battery drain) or hurts it, often depends on your local geography. Newer radios often have other fixes as well, so they are a good place to start. But its usually more trial and error, and there is no overall "best" or "better" radio.
Also, there is not one "stock" radio. It depends on what version of the phone you have, what region/carrier, and when you got your phone. There are often different radios for different carriers, and each carrier usually gets a radio updates, which then get installed on the phones as they ship.
If you don't understand these concepts, you probably should not be flashing any radios on your phone to begin with.
Your better off going to this thread for RADIO'S http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970809
All the links in the 2nd post above are megaupload and there's only a few radio's more have surfaced over time.

[Q] Best Radio for CM7

What radio is everyone using or would recommend for CM7?
I can't post in the development forums yet even though i've been here awhile just a lurker though.
2.15.00.07.28 There is a newer one I believe but I haven't tried it.
This question wouldn't belong in the development forum anyways. Here or Q & A. That is exactly why they make people wait to post in there =)
Noticed a bit of a stronger signal when I flashed the 11.19 radio (newest). As I understand it all phones are different though, I would test each one and see what works best for you.

Yeah but i would have just posted in the CM7 thread, but i understand.
I have the 11.19 radio right now (flashed it and hboot 92 while running SR 3.5 athena and it killed my wifi...) seems to be doing fine. Took about 3 tries to get CM7 working correctly for me though. Kept getting a boot loop forcing me to reflash.
Give each radio a test drive yourself for a few days. Asking what radio you should use is like asking someone to tell you what your favorite color should be.
Baseband performance is extremely subjective based upon your individual variables. As such, someone else's experience isn't necessarily a reliable indicator of what you can expect on your own phone in your location.
I'm running 11.19 now on rooted 2.2 and I seem to be getting better signal now than I did before. I was at Camp Old Indian over the weekend and was getting 2 bars consistently while everyone else got "no service". Anyone in Scouting that knows the upstate area of South Carolina knows exactly what I'm talking about.
I'm using 7.28. I was using 11.19 for a about a month before going back. Cell reception is the same but 3g is faster on 7.28. Atleast for me it is. I never use gps so cant speak for that.
I just flashed 11.19 and I'll be trying it out for a few days. My work has some sort of issue inside the building -- there are "dead" places all over the building and it tends to eat my battery when I spend time in those areas. It's very predictable (on the old radio) so I'll know pretty quick if any difference has been made.
There is a thread in the development forums that is a must-read if you are considering a radio flash so you A)know what to do and B)don't permanently brick your phone.
Read it...

The next time you have to reboot your phone, go ahead and pull the battery too. It might help to completely power down the device. It may not help, but it can't hurt.
i have been using the 11.19 radio for a couple of months and it works well for me.
Flashed 11.19 and things didn't seem any different in terms of call quality, battery life, or signal strength. I flashed the 9.xx version and it didn't seem any different, either. I'm going to put all three on the phone and record signal strength in the same place at the same time of the day and do various d/l speed tests and see if I can find a definitive radio that meets my needs. If anyone has any suggestions for a testing methodology, please let me know....

That sounds great actually. I am usin the new evo 4.08 radio n went from -85 on 11.10 to -78. All from my house, i tested right b4 i flashed new radio.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Ok, so I ran 10 trials each for the three kernels about 1 minute apart and measured dBm and kbps UL and DL speeds using speedtest from the market....
Having testing it and reflecting on the data, it's impossible to test meaningfully with just one phone.
The upload and download speeds vary too much from moment to moment and within an hour apart, 11.19 went from an average DL speed of 480kbps to 1150kbps. This is clearly just a function of who is currently sucking up bandwidth and unless I have three phones with the three versions of the radio side by side running the tests, I don't know how I can make it meaningful.
I did compare the dBm on each kernel and they were within -1 dBm of each other consistently. The phone was placed in the exact same location and I watched for changes in the number until the screen blanked. I then opened it again and monitored it again until it timed out and so on... 10 times for each radio version. The difference was so small it would have to be considered insignificant.

Flashed 4.08 about an hour ago. *228 afterward even though it has never made a difference locally. No difference. I place my phone in the EXACT same spot facing the exact same direction and monitor the dBm level. The best I've seen from that spot is -93 dBM and worst is -99dBm. Each radio has displayed that range and pinned right at -94 to -95.
I'm beginning to believe that the radio itself has a "fixed" send/receive strength and that no amount of software can change a hardware limitation. Maybe it can change rules like how long a GPS waits to lock based on number of acceptable satellite grabs or something like that, but I'm not seeing one bit of difference in radios.
The new 4.08 radio is working good for me.

As far as receiver sensitivity goes...I was an electronics technician at one time in my life, and I too believe the hardware is the limiting factor. E.g: My phone is setting in the exact same spot, facing the same direction, and I updated from 11.19 to 04.08, and only noticed -1db difference. I am using the Real Signal app. And it shows the relative strength of both signals that our CDMA phones use.

[Q] Flashing radio

What is the best radio for me to flash? My father has been having connection issues with his INcredible lately. He has been dropping calls in areas where my Eris has a very clear connection. He is currently running the newest stock rom and everything is normal except I have rooted the phone. What is the best Radio for me to flash when it comes to reliability?
I'm speaking from PERSONAL EXPERIENCE ONLY, and cannot say that what I did will help you out, but I flashed 11.19 (Evo) on my rooted Froyo just to see how it works. Surprisingly, I noticed that GPS locks on almost instantly with very little "searching for satellites". Also, one of the Boy Scout camps we attend on a regular basis has almost zero coverage as it's in the mountains. We were there last weekend and the first thing I noticed is that I had 2 bars all over camp where I usually had no signal / no service.

With personal experience, 11.19 wasn't all that great for me. I kept losing signal randomly. The newly leaked 04.08 is a beauty though. Amazing signal and doesn't drop as much. Each phone is different though.
Yep just depends on the phone, there is no "best" radio. For my phone, the 11.19 radio works best, I tried the new one but lost signal. Don't worry about it too much, just check the md5 sum, make sure your card is formatted fat32, and make sure the file is named PB31IMG.zip

[Q] Poor signal after flash of Viper ROM.

I've been flashing a few different ROM's recently, trying to find one which suits my needs, and honestly I'm still looking. All was well and my phone working with great signal and then i decided to install Viper and everything has since gone to hell in a handcart.
My signal strength has dropped massively and I barely get any signal in my normal "chilling spot" in my house.
I've tried flashing different radios and nothing seems to be working. I even tried flashing back to stock and that hasn't corrected it either. I'm about 9 months from being able to upgrade and need this to work, so any input would be appreciated. This is doing my friggin nut in...

Before you flog it are you sure its not a hardware issue and its coincidence on the Rom ? Have you checked out the threads on aerial/back cover contacts issues?

The phone has never been opened up and up until the flash of viper i've always had full signal in my little chill out spot in the house. Its weird, but I doubt its hardware related.
I've managed to get a RUU for my credentials and am gonna flash it back to as it was when I bought it and see if that cures the issue, if it doesnt, then its going on Ebay. I've had enough.
