Go to Settings > Developer Options and scroll to "Don't keep activities" and make sure it isn't checked.
This will prevent most apps from refreshing when you return to them.
Damn mine is already set to normal...
It actually seems to be working really well now. Thanks.

I enabled GPU mode to see and I couldn't recreate your problem so I'm assuming that isn't it.
There are three different versions, the one I used was made by "Android Apps", I have no clue if this is a clone or not.
If it is someone should let us know and anyone having success should buy the PRO version as it is only $1.74.
Download Spare Parts, not Spare Parts Plus.
Also, uninstalling Spare Parts will reset it back to aggressive. You need to keep the app to have proper multi-tasking for now. It works really well though. (GSM GNex AOKP 28 Franco M2)
I wonder why the memkiller is set at "Aggressive" though?
Hm, I guess I didn't really notice lots of app reloads, but it was most annoying in the browser. When i clicked on it the first time in Spare Parts, neither of them were selected... Changed it to "Normal" and we'll see how it goes.
Not really gonna be happy with this if Spare Parts sits in the background taking up resources.
It was actually the simplest solution that I overlooked.
Go to Settings > Developer Options and scroll to "Don't keep activities" and make sure it isn't checked. That's all the the spare parts Normal/Aggressive toggle does.

Love the phone but a few times the launcher has redrawn after exiting an app because of most likely memory issues. Anybody using this option? Assuming over time this would keep more memory free and reduce this issue. Any thoughts?

This is one of the reasons why I don't like that Google included these developer options pre-installed on this phone. They're developer options for a reason, we can install them if we need to.
This feature is designed so that developers can test their app to be sure that data is properly saved when is no longer in the foreground. For example, if a user receives a phone call or jumps to another app, the app needs to do what is necessary to save it's data. At times, Android can kill a process in the background. If the user plans to go back (perhaps they finished the phone call), they want to see what it is they were working on last. The developer is supposed to handle this case by rebuilding everything as it was before (to provide that seamless experience for the user when switching between apps).
This debug feature helps us test that it works.
For the average user, all you're really more likely to do is slow down your apps. As they will have to rebuild themselves when you resume them, and you may even open yourself to more quirky bugs (for those apps that didn't properly test the above scenario).
So please don't enable it unless you're doing it for development purposes. My 2 cents.
*EDIT* Here's a page from the Android Dev Guide justifying my explanation:
http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/debugging/debugging-devtools.html
Immediately destroy activities
Tells the system to destroy an activity as soon as it is stopped (as if Android had to reclaim memory). This is very useful for testing the onSaveInstanceState(Bundle) / onCreate(android.os.Bundle) code path, which would otherwise be difficult to force. Choosing this option will probably reveal a number of problems in your application due to not saving state. For more information about saving an activity's state, see the Activities document.

(and yes, they used to call it "Immediately destroy activities")
Thanks. I turned it off. Did notice some bugs while on. I just wish with 1GB of RAM the launcher wouldnt have to reload. Hopefully things get better. Might just be my apps but it happens quite often when leaving the browser.

weird.. how many widgets do you have on your launcher? the more widgets you have, the slower the launcher is.
Have you tried another launcher? The stock launcher has never been known for being fast and efficient, although I haven't had any issues with it (whereas I'm a LauncherPro fan on my other devices).

I have quite a few Widgets but nothing too crazy I don't think. I use LauncherPro on my other devices as well but I love this new launcher so I'm going to stick it out. Like I said the most common task that causes the issue is when I'm using the web browser and then come out of it. Otherwise its been stable. I've noticed the same thing with Honeycomb on my Xoom so it might just be one of those things I have to put up with.

i'm also noticing some redraw and occasional lag when hitting the home button.
I'm hoping that CM9's custom launcher will have an option to lock it in memory- that may increase the performance by a lot.
also when replacement launchers like go launcher start optimizing more for ICS those might be good options.
Have you tried converting your launcher into a system app? You'll need to use Titanium Backup Pro or something similar to do it for you, or simple copy the APK into your system/app folder... Really sped up my launcher!

Thanks for clarifying the meaning of "Don't keep activities"
my razr xt910 cannot be counted upon to run smoothly with all the apps simultaneously running and forcing itself to go into reboot. i then fancied an iPhone single styled system (as compared to Android multi-talks) cuz iPhone looks robust and responsive. all the killer that claimed to do the job looked more of a farce and then when i stumbled upon the destroy activity i was like OMG. srsly b4 using it I've only got just inner 100mb of ram, after using it i have a whooping 400mb ram. UI appears faster and all. regarding the relaunching of apps and battery life being used up. i think I'll start to worry about it on a later date. what say any body. ooh yes to add on, even after i deleted 40 apps on my phone it still hanged like fcuked. i guess i can reinstall them back again and not have to worry about it. btw i can't seem to root my xt910 for nuts so i can't custom ROM it along with all other fanciful mods that i hear about what others did to their phones.
Hi
After rooting, I observed that 3 apps - Call Logs Backup & Restore (com.riteshsahu.CallLogBackupRestore), Zipcar (com.zc.android), and S2 Calendar Widget (com.byte256.calendarwidget), have their screens squeezed to the lower left quardrant. (see attachments. The 4th one is S2 Calendar Widget launched from the drawer.)
I vaguely remember that Call Log Backup behaved just fine before I rooted/fastboot oem unlock the Galaxy Nexus with Modaco's Superboot r3. But I don't want to go through the trouble of unroot/fastboot lock after setting up all my apps.
I suspect if I change the pixel density maybe they'll show themselves. But LCDDensity for Root has no effect.
I know this is an obscure problem so if you can try these 3 apps out and see if the problem is isolated on my phone only, that'd be great too!
go to the developers options in the settings and turn off forced gpu rendering.

I shouldn't have listened to Myriam Joire of Engadget to turn on that setting.

Yeah if it was so simple, wouldn't Google just turn it on by default?

I switched to Friendcaster a while ago cause the Facebook app would always run in the background and on startup (yes yes, I understand that doesn't matter, but I still don't like it under Running apps even with all refresh/notifications off). Does this super revamp version still run on startup and in the background all the time?
Update is out. Installing now.

Menu Button is there now. Nothing else pops out (aside from the expected special advances). No sync for contacts as far as I can tell
Nope, no contact sync.

Yeah, in the settings theres a section for "other settings" i think that's where the contact sync usually appears for other devices but no go for galaxy nexus a little disappointing
No contact sync, which is a bit disappointing, but I've managed with Google Contact sync periodically. The new app is beautiful though, it's exactly what I had hoped a facebook app would be. I'm very happy with it!
I couldn't care less about contact sync. I don't need several hundred people in my address book when I really only regularly call a few people.
I suppose others carry on conversations with hundreds of people on a regular basis? I'm not one of them...it's just clutter, IMO.
Can you go now to the settings menu and configure notification?
I want to turn the notification off ... Possible?

What do you guys set it at?
For those that are unaware you can find it here:
Settings > Developer Options > Background Process Limit
Anyways, I just want to gauge what XDA users do with this. I often set mine to "At most 3 processes" as oppose to the standard limit but I don't really see a difference. I assume the standard limit is Google's designed way to deal with apps in the background but that doesn't really tell us much.
Anyone have any observations on battery life or performance?
I guess the battery life wouldn't be much better than normal. Android deals with background processes pretty well so I've not bothered to change this option.

Same here.
Like I said in the other thread about this. Don't monkey around with those settings. They're meant for developers to troubleshoot the ways that their apps handle being put into the background and how they are managed when they're killed.
Android will handle your background processes. Just let them be. You'll be better off all around by doing so.
i set mine to 3, but how many process in standard limit?

I think there is not limit, app gets killed when phone runs out off free RAM
do not change that setting unless you like having worse battery life from apps having to constantly restart and lag from apps not being in cache.
I don't see why anyone except a developer trying to troubleshoot their apps would change this setting at all

it is SUPPOSED to do this.
it isn't meant to be something any regular user sets in order to try and get better performance or anything.
in fact, just the opposite may happen
I use "standart" and its`s absolutly OK!
I have not had this problem at all...until maybe a week or go, when it started.
I have screen flicker, sometimes quite bad. I thought I read somewhere that GPU settings may have something do do with it.
Thing is, I haven't changed any settings, or kernels. I'm no what is listed in my sig, and have been for quite a while.
Any thoughts?
You could try disabling HW overlays under developer options in the settings menu.
Disabling hw overlays won't help (much anyways). Turn off auto brightness. Just set your brightness to a usable level. I didn't notice a single flicker the day I turned off auto brightness. The only tradeoff there is you're gonna run through your battery a little more quickly in lower light levels. Wasn't worth it for me, but whatever makes you happy.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
Neither is a go for me.
I never use auto brightness; I've tried both having Disable Hardware Overlays set and not set.
It's strange...I never had this problem until recently.
But, another thing that seems to be the case: I"m not sure it's happening in any app other than Samsung Email.
...
Just went and tried something: opened an email and scrolled in Samsung eMail, and it flashed. Did same in GMail, and it didn't. Maybe it's just something about a recent upgrade on that app. Maybe I'll post a topic on that app and see if anyone else is seeing it.

It's listed in my signature. Stock/Rooted.
I do have an update: I also was having pretty severe flicker/flashing when reading in Aldiko.
Last night I did a TWRP backup; factory reset; restore Data partition. Flashing is improved quite a bit, but still there.
So again, it seems it is happening, for the most part, in just a couple apps: Samsung Email, and Aldiko.

Sorry. Didn't mean to offend. I didn't know sigs don't show up when viewing in mobile. I put the info in the sig in order to prevent people from having to ask, and to prevent from having to type it with every post. I appreciate your telling me it doesn't show up in mobile apps. I never use mobile for forums...typing is to laborious.
IN answer to three, yes, have tried different kernel, although it's been quite a while.
It's ok.
I've had this issue on AOSP ROMs. Only way out was to change ROM.
