AOKP File System Questions - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

This is kind of based off another thread I started but the subject has changed a bit. First I'd like it if someone could break down for me how the AOKP filesystem is divided up( and maybe a lot of this goes for other builds as well ). But on our E4GT you have the root system, /sdcard, /emmc( This doesn't exist in non CM based ROMs from what I've seen ) and /mnt/sdcard and /mnt/emmc which are links( or link targets ) to the root directories of the same name.
Regarding those directories, when you look in Settings->Storage you see "Internal Storage" with 1.97gb, "Validity" with 11.49gb storage, and an "Issued On" heading which states whatever your micro sd card has. No idea why they call it "Validity, that screen is confusing to me in general.
- If I do "Erase USB Storage" will that do /mnt/sdcard and /mnt/emmc?
- "Unmount shared storage" will only unmount the /mnt/emmc correct?
- Most system things go on /mnt/sdcard ( Camera, Evernote settings, GoSMS and Syncr settings for isntance. ) I'd really like them to be on the external so I don't loose them during data/factory wipes, and generally so their safer from deletion over all. Is there anyway to change the external card to be /mnt/sdcard other than going in and trying to manually place a symbolic link in linux on the device?
- For some reason, why I plug in my phone now I only see one drive, which corresponds with /mnt/sdcard, I have no access to /mnt/emmc as a drive any longer. I've tried formatting the card via an SD Card adapter on my computer, I reflashed AOKP from scratch, and still the PC just will not give me access to it after I "Connect USB Storage" in the notification dropdown. This is what my other thread was about mainly, but split it off seeing as I had more in depth questions.
Thanks for any info you can provide, I love android, but there storage methodology seems a little odd, and this is coming from a Linux / Unix guy

very interested in this as well. I have AOKP as well and noticed my 32gb micro SD card wasn't showing properly.

[Q] Managing the SD Card and External SD Card

So, this device handles storage slightly differently than my HTC EVO 4G did. That, which pretty much needed an SD card for storage, mounted it in /mnt/sdcard/. This phone however, mounts the external SD card in /mnt/sdcard/external_sd/. I am guessing this is because this guy has 16GB internal storage already, and changes are if you were to dissect the phone, you'd probably find an SD card in there too.
I am thinking I'll just move my card contents over to internal storage. Programs that backup/restore data to /mnt/sdcard/ don't realize that this path isn't actually external storage.
I am wondering how this will affect those of us that frequently reflash. Does that partition get wiped when the ROM is wiped? Or is it really just another SD card internally that isn't touched by the system kernel or ROM except for storing user data?
I also have another Q, that's not online with the OP exactly but related to the topic. I'm coming from an e4g to the et4g and plan on using my sdcard from the e4g in the et4g (at least until I buy a 32gb card). I notice that there are many system files on the sdcard from the e4g, are these gonna be an issue with the et4g?
also, I was thinking to make a backup of the card as is to a hard drive, then delete all the files and reformat the card (fresh start), then add back only those I feel are necessary (backup apks, titanium backup files, pics & vids)....is this feasible?
lastly, are there any "don't touch" files on the scard that I should be aware of.

So, what is your question? You should be able to move the card, but like I stated, the paths seem to be different. It may be the same for you since both devices are Samsung, but maybe not.

There shouldn't be anything you shouldn't touch. As far as I know, I think a program like Titanium Backup will archive everything.
What I would do is use Titanium Backup to backup old phone and restore to new phone. Then start the programs you use with personalized data at least once. If you end up with paths on both the phone storage and external storage, move the external over to the phone, replacing/combining.
I ended up doing this and found that my external SD card is now empty.. Starting clean!
It's pretty amazing how far 16GB built into a phone can go. I don't use my phone for movie watching or music often, so we'll see. Maybe I will.
I just notced on the e4g that there are 2 paths that both seem to lead to the same. destination file.
one is: /mnt/sdcard
the other is: /sdcard
the content is exactly the same. not sure if that info helps you any.

Shouldn't make a difference. I think there are two mounts to support applications that look to just /sdcard.
May i have 3rd grade level instructions on how to move all the contents from my sd card(evo) into the internal memory please?
Thanks,

Once you move the SD Card from your EVO 4G to the Epic 4G Touch, attach a USB cable to your PC. In the notification area on the phone, you have to touch the USB Connected status and then touch the button that says "Connect USB storage".
This will mount TWO removable disks. One will be the size of your SD Card. The other will come in at around 11.5GB. The 11.5GB is the internal storage.
Just use Windows to move everything over. You may want to back up both before you make changes just in case.
If the hardware doesn't mount in Windows, you may need to install the drivers first. They are installed with Samsung Kies, which is on their site.
If you need more info, let me know.

ok thanks...im thinking to do this. im going to back up the entire sdcard on my PC (and ext HD) before i do anything.
also, i see about 15 files that have a "." prefix, ex) ".dataviz" are these system files for the apk's that are installed? should these be deleted or just leave and if i find it has been created on the phones storage just move it over?
anyways...my et4g just came in today, so after work i'm going in my cave to unbox and forget about the rest of the world.

What filesystem should I format my 32GB microsd card to?

So I got a great deal on a class 10 32GB Samsung card, it came pre-formatted to fat32, however I had the wild idea that android supported NTFS based on something I read in the past so I formatted it to NTFS on a windows system and copied some files over (some being over 5GB each)...plugged in my card and turned on my phone and I get a message saying my card is blank or the wrong file format...guess it doesn't support NTFS
I know if I use the phones built in format utility it will format to fat32 which I don't really want because of the filesize limitation, I'd like to be able to copy 8-10GB files every so often so I can use my phone as a little shuttle drive in between places...
But I also want the ability for windows to be able to read my sd card if I change my phone into USB mode so I think that excludes the ext3, ext4 format which I think android will read...
Any ideas?

if you use windows, fat32 is the way to go so then you can connect the phone to computer and still can access the files

The reason the op doesn't want fat32 is because he has single files that exceeds 4 GB that he wants to transfer, so fat32 would not work for him.

format it ext3/4 and then install an ftp server app on your phone.
There is an app that works fine
I have exactly the same problem. I want to have the sdcard in NTFS so then I do not have the 4GB limitation of FAT32. The is possible to have .mkv files on your phone or tablet.
In the case of my table the N8010, I have formatted the sd card on Windows with NTFS. Then installed the "paragon" app from market which works very good. It recognized the sd card in NTFS and mount perfectly. But it seems that when your card is overloaded with thounsands of files and some big 6GB file, then comes the problem. Android JB everytime that comes out of sleep, it will check for errors the sd card. Everytime! Then, I get the message "sd card checking for errors" and never gets back. The sd card is not recognized anymore until I reboot the device.
I think that the paragon app is not perfect and might have bugs, but
Is there any way to disable the "sd card check for error" functionality? Have read some threads about it, to delete some file from system, but that method produces inconsistencies with other apps.
By the way, I have tried to format on ExFat, and had the same problem. When the card is almost full it will never end up checking for errors. I finally broke the sd card when I formated it with ExFat and 64k allocation size. It was not regoznized neither by windows and android afterwards
thanks

I don't think you broke it unless you fried the flash chips. You can try using the disk manager in windows and try to see if it sees it. Or just learn how to use Linux command line tools and fix it that way. I recovered 80% of my pictures off of a dead SD card using dd and a file recovery utility. I don't recall which one. That 16GB SD card now works just fine as a 12GB card. I don't trust it for any more than shuttling between systems though.
Also, I've never had good luck with exFAT. I much prefer the EXT filesystems, but they aren't natively supported in windows or most cameras. Maybe try NTFS without journaling (If that's even possible)

exfat is proprietary windows and needs licenses. android won't support it.
ntfs is a journaling file system and will impact performance if you can get android to read it.
ext2/3 is the best solution. there are utilities you can install so windows can read it.

SD Card on Jelly Bean

I have asked this question a few times on the Sbriessen JB AOSP thread, but can't get any answers. I am having a problem in which my media can be read off of my SD card and I can locate the files on my phone, but when I move my apps to SD it moves it to my internal storage. Because of this I can't fit some of the apps I want as I have ran out of space (bigger gaming apps). I have a 32gb micro sd that works fine, and has a ton of space on it.
It seems that in ICS there was a folder on the internal storage that linked to my SD card and in JB there isn't one but there is a new directory path to get to the SD files. I am wondering if there is a way (without changing ROMS) to fix the pathway to the SD card, if there is a manual way to do it, or some fix/workaround I can do?
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I leave for a while in a few days and would like to load up on games and such before hand.
link2sd?

Back in the day when I used an Intercept with LOW internal memory I installed an app called Link2SD so that you can use a 2nd partition on the SD card to install ANY (but don't push a system app over, please lol) app to the SD card... looks like it's still available and free.. give it a shot: (tried to put a link here, guess I'm too "new" lol) -worked great for me back then, and I know the person I gave my old phone to is still using it, but I've never had a reason to use it on my E4GT... nor with JB, so good luck!

Go to settings>storage then click menu>storage configuration and switch the configuration to whatever its not on currently and reboot. This will switch from internal to external or vice versa but they may be reversed so internal may really link to external and external may really link to internal. The storage locations on the et4g are a bit whacky so android sees SD card as internal and external _SD as the removable SD card sometimes the symlinks don't match up so it thinks then SD card links to external and then uses the internal symlink like its the removable, if that makes since. I have this issue on aokp where my internal is mounted as SD and my external is mounted as emmc and it causes android to not like to save apps to sd after a reboot. It loses track of where it symlinked them

This device with the card partitioned will use the a2sd scripts to save apps on SD without aa 3rd party app. You just use terminal emulator and type
Su > enter
A2sd check > enter and then use the commands listed to move stuff like
A2sd reinstall > enter moves apps to SD etc

I haven't been on aosp jb yet so that setting may not work on that rom :banghead: its available on aosp ics so i was thinking they would have carried it over to jb since its pretty handy. Let me look at what can be done. In general there's a tutorial to swap internal and external so u can use a bigger SD as storage lemme grab the link so u can take a look. Its not hard for me to do but idk if you'd be comfortable doing the mod even tho you can nandroid first in case you mess up u can just restore the backup
Edit: here's the tutorial, its for GB but as long as you can locate the correct files on JB the rest should be the same or atleast similar enough to get it working, just nandroid first in case you make an oopsie you can just restore the nandroid and atleast give it a shot if you're comfortable with it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1846115

So ya, I'm a tad confused... why would anyone want to use terminal emulator and have to type crap when there's an app with a nice easy-to-use GUI? lol If if still hasn't been tried, I still think it'd be worth while to try MY suggestion... can't say that it'll work (it might though!), but it's worth trying IMO at least

This script doesn't look that hard, but do you think I could use it to make the internal the actual internal storage. I am not a developer (obviously) but I feel like the problem is that it is not reading the storages correctly. It reads the internal as the external, and the external as something else.

I tried editing the text and not going to lie, got a little confused (I am a visual learner and a little New to this). There is only flashable zip for this is there, or any other way. Seems silly they would completely change this for this version of android.

Frustrating sdcard issue.

First I'll start by noting that I haad my n2 several days before purchasing a 64gb sd card. So system was already setup with a few apps installed pre-sdcard.
However now that I have it in, nothing saves to it. Everything still saves to the internal sdcard. I dont care about apps and such installed from market or xda, those are fine.
But anything I download from Tapatalk or the web browser automatically saves to internal. Pictures taken as well.
Im coming from an evo3d where pics and all media/files I downloaded would go to the sd card and not internal.
I do see that for whatever reason samsung nsmed there internal as sdcard which probably makes a lot of apps think that is the external and not internal but its extremely annoying. I dont know if its because I started using phone before I had an external one in or if thats by design.
But its ridiculous to think I'd have to manually copy everything over from internal to external sfter downloading something when my 3d used to place on external.
Do I need to factory reset to correct this or what. Whats the point of an external card that isnt being utilized??
Also it isnt recognized at all in twrp which after some reading I see it doesn't support 64gb? What gives?
Do I need to format it a certain way?
Thanks in advance.

I have not been able to move my Tapatalk download folder, but you can relocate where things download to under settings in the browser and camera apps.
For formatting, I'd format the card via the phone under storage if you haven't already tried that.

I changed camera to external so it now saves to /storage/extSdCard/DCIM which is good but dolphin broswer only lets u select /storage/sdcard0 which is default internal storage. Doesnt even show the extSdCard as an option. Why in the world would they do it like this. Very gay.
Had no issues on previous HTC models going to the correct place.
Would I be able to use root explorer to rename the directories?
Need this fixed more than anything. Some apps dont even give you the option to change path as they assume sdcard0 is your actual sdcard. :/

sdcard0 to extsdcard
I found a scripts the tricks ICS to use your external sdcard as your internal storage. So when apps write data to sdcard0 it is actually writting to your external sd. I tried it and it works!
I dont have permission to post outside links but you can find it at galaxynote2root in the tutorials section.

[Q] Cyanogenmod inverted storage on computer

I've been using CM10 and now 10.1 for a while now. I like it alot but im having a little issue...
I've searched XDA and found a couple of mention of this issue but no workaround or more info than the usual "yes, i'm also having this issue".
When i connect my phone to the computer, the SD card and internal storage are inverted, yet they report proper sizes.
I wouldnt mind if it was only a cosmetic issue, however i'm having issues copying files on my internal memory because my SD Card is full...
For exemple... when i plug my phone i see "SD Card" with 346mb free out of 59.4gb (using a 64gb sdcard) and i see Internal memory as 8.41gb free out of 12gb. If i want to copy a file that is bigger than 350mb on my internal memory, i have to go into "SD Card" and copy it there and then it fails to copy saying there isnt enough free space.
So yeah, while the cosmetic inversion doesnt bother me, the fact that it's checking for the required free-space in the wrong place before copying is a bit annoying.
I'm using my SD Card for music storage, i like to keep things separated and well sorted... so right now, my solution is to delete enough stuff on my SD Card so that it has more free-space than the files i want to copy on my internal storage
Any workaround other than that?

I'm not sure if there's a workaround but you could try mounting through recovery?
It sounds like a ROM problem, did you clean flash CM10.1?

I did do a clean flash. Over the holidays, i played around with AOKP and CM10.1 as i had issues getting my Wifi to work on CM10.1 and AOKP was working fine (ended up breaking in AOKP after the holidays too, had to change my router's setting from simple WPA to WPA2, but thats another story). So while playing around, i ended up wipping the phone a few times.
Sadly, i don't remember if the issue was also present in AOKP or if it was just CM10.1
I'm using TWRP, nothing shows up on my computer when i plug the phone while running TWRP. So i'm not sure...
Just for reference, here's two other posts with the same issue, both on CM10.1:

I'm not having this issue on AOKP, like I mentioned, it could be ROM specific.
As for TWRP, there should be a mount option.

Yeah, im pretty sure its ROM specific too...
For TWRP, there is a mount button, but it doesnt seem to be there for USB mounting. I couldnt find the option to mount anything on USB...
I backed up everything and ill do a complete wipe now, just to see if it fixes it...

Mount storage perhaps? Or mount internal/external.
I'm downloading a big file right now so I can't check but will check later if you haven't got it.

Well good sir, it seems like your initial assessment was quite correct. After wiping everything (Factory, cache, dalvik, format internal) and re installing CM10.1 latest nightly, my issue is fixed.
Now im reloading everything using Titanium Backup, hopefully i get all my settings back, without restoring the issue...
Thanks alot!
