Mobile Odin Question - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I'm currently running the AOKP ICS ROM, which suggests flashing the EL26 CWM kernel when you need to do anything with CWM. I was wondering how safe Mobile Odin is. I bought it, but never used it, not even on Gingerbread just because I was always by a computer and didn't need Odin all that much daily. Now however it would be really convinient to be able to use the app to flash the EL26 Kernel whenever I needed to do a backup or restore ... So how about it, see any horror stories out there about using it on GB or ICS?
Just an FYI, running FC18( both kernel and modem ) on AOKP right now, so I'd be using Mobile Odin when FC18 was already flashed and running, to be able to get me back to EL26 Kernel and Vice Versa.
Also, is it safe for the modem? Not as big of a deal, but would be a nice to have

I've used it at least 20 times since I bought it with zero issues..
It does not flash modems though..

I know Mobile Odin can't flash the modem.
But there are reports in this thread that it can do the job:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529081
Personally if you can use ODIN One-Click it's probably safer. It can restore in cases that Mobile ODIN cannot. Or at least try Mobile ODIN where you can easily change to ODIN OC if it borks for any reason - at least then you're mitigating the risk until you are comfortable with it.

How can you say it's safer I have seen many people brick using regular Odin from bad cables, cable getting pulled out during flashing etc so I haven't heard anyone brick using mobile Odin.there could be but there are more things that could go wrong with cables and things ... Seems it can go both ways . I use it all the time going from any Ics to another ROM . And flash the eg30 tar and el26 cwm .
But Odin has its place too ..when the phone won't boot.

Awesome ... Thank you all for the input, looks like I'm safe using it( atleast for the kernel ) which will make life much easier

Ok ... So I used Mobile Oden to flash EL26 CWM Kernel from FC18 kernel on AOKP. Thing scared the crap outta me, after it rebooted the Samsung label came on, then the screen shut off and just sat there for like 5 or more minutes, I know the phone didn't shut off but the screen was black. I finally bit the bullet and powered it off and booted into CWM, thank god it worked, lol. Looks like the kernel flashed but never rebooted itself or something?
What is the normal behaviour with Mobile Odin when you flash a ROM? Could this be because I flashed a GB kernel onto a ICS ROM? Maybe it was trying to boot up and it couldn't because of the kernel incompatibility?
EDIT: One more question ... How come Mobile Odin has a spot to flash the modem if it doesn't work for us? Am I missing something here?

It has a spot to flash the modem because it works on other phones apparently. Chainfire thinks it may be a CDMA phone issue. Go figure. CDMA, the red headed step child of the mobile phone world.

Exactly. What happens is that it reboots normally but since you can't boot an ICS ROM with a GB kernel, it hangs at the black screen

Using mobile odin

My pc crashed recently and i was wondering if anybody can shed some light on mobile odin. Is it reliable, does it work well....just wanted some info before spending 5 bucks on a app ......soo should i buy???????
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
So far it seems reliable. Bought pro version after using the free for a bit to support. Haven't flashed a ROM through it but have flashed modems and kernals.
Try the free and then decide. Pro gives ability to inject su etc. Not needed for kernel or modem.
Anybody else

I've also only used it to flash Kernels. Worked great for that. Just flash a kernel then boot into recovery if you're nervous about flashing a rom with mobile Odin. Although if you brick it will be because of the kernel, not the rom.
Yyyyyyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeesssssssssss!!!!

i bought it and i flash everything with i only CWM for nandroid backups but something will need more then just a flash ( you will know it migth get stuck in a boot loop and thats only with a couple ROMs that need to have data wiped) , if you flash it and it gets stuck in a boot loop then just go into CWM and wipe data fix everytime and thats the only problem ive had
Mobile odin
I USED MOBILE ODIN PRO TO FLASH THE OFFICIAL ICS UPDATE FOR MY SGSII i777.
FLAWLESS
Only thing mobile Odin can't do on the et4g is.flash modems, they flash but won't stick. Its well worth the $5 but if you'd like to try it first chainfire has a free version here on xda. If you try the free version when you download it make sure to scroll down a few posts in the thread and download the flash kernel for our device, its listed as the sph-d710 I think its post 5 or 6 where its located

Mobile Odin has always worked well for me,it is nice not having to have a computer around to get my flash on.
Although its not been working on jellybean, has a problem with finding the partition so you have to reboot into recovery
thru the ROM or by manually booting into recovery.I'm sure it won't be long before its fixed.
can i use mobile odin to flash a directboot kernel el29 on ics where i would then flash a rom?
Yes, it will work and I have used it before.

I've only had a snafu once and that was a couple of days ago with trying to go from blue kuban (sp?) back to el29. Something happened before i even installed it. The rom was falling on its face and reporting things stopped running. I have no clue what caused that but i suspect that is what caused mobile odin pro to lock up before rebooting. It, mop, hasnt messed anything up on a system that was running and not fc'ing or other errors popping up left and right. If you want to flash one click odin files, you need to get zarchiver to unpack the compressed exe to its full size or mop wont be able to do anything with it. I used to mess with the additional wipe options but started leaving them alone lest i screw up something. I think it's pretty safe to use. Now i have to switch out of this damned samsung keyboard because it's driving me crazy!
I've noticed people leaving comments in the app's page in the play store. Their comments are that it soft bricked when using for an ics install. Today I experienced the same thing again. When trying to go from agats fh13 rom to sfhub's one click Odin of el29, using mop, what worked so many other times is now just installing recovery but the rest bombs out. I'm going back to run a md5 on my oc el29 to make sure it isn't corrupted. Use mobile Odin at your own risk. I thought it was reliable but I have to check a few things first.

I only use mobile Odin to install el26+cwm to flash from. If your oneclick has a modem that may be the issue, they flash from mOdin on our device but don't stick, so it may be what's causing the softbrick with the oneclick. Or you may be correct and have a corrupted file. I've never attempted to run a oneclick or flash a whole rom tar from mOdin just el26 and then flash what I need from there, never had an issue with it yet:thumbup: usually if I want to Odin a oneclick I use the PC, but I don't Odin a rom unless I bootlooped by forgetting to flash an ics kernel after a nandroid restore from el26 or when I rooted my device. I don't use TW roms tho I stick to aosp based roms so i don't really have a need to do alot of Odining roms unless its absolutely necessary because I borked something or need to do prl and profile updates and don't wanna mOdin el26, flash TW, mOdin el26, then flash a new aosp rom or restore a backup. Ill just oneclick to el29 and a cwm kernel then do my updates, boot to recovery and flash el26.zip and the reboot recovery to flash my rom

I've gotten into the habit of using el26 everytime I use recovery, I don't even worry about if the kernel I'm using with my rom has recovery or what recovery it is. I've been using el26 for a little more than 5 months so its just become a habit for me to mOdin it before I go into recovery

I md5'd the file on the phone I have and on the computer. They both match. I can run the computer one and it goes through without errors. Maybe I should try it again to see if I can determine what's causing the soft brick. I will report back.

Give it a try without the modem and see if that's causing it too. I know they flash and don't stick but I'm curious if its flashed with the other files if it not sticking like it should causes an error during the flash process that corrupts something in the kernel preventing the boot

I've flashed a few different ways and no problems. Perhaps it was a couple snafus earlier. All on clicks have a modem packed in them but mop won't flash the modem. You can flash a custom recovery then flash the modem zip if you wanted to. I thought of something I did different earlier but am not sure if I want to go through the hassle again. What I did just before was to flash the fh13 modded 1x zip to show what mode you were in. It definitely broke the looks of the 3/4g icons and the battery. After the flash I couldn't connect to 4g in known good areas. Well, I'm really lazy now but I suppose I won't know if that could be replicated yet. I hate intentionally screwing something up that works nice as it is.

My mobile Odin will flash the modem it just doesn't stay after it reboots. That's why I was wondering if flashing the modem in the oneclick was causing some sort of error from it not sticking. I know on other devices the modem will actually stick, I think the et4g is the only one it doesn't stick on, or maybe the cdma devices it doesn't stick on. I always flash my modems in el26 right before I flash TWiz to do a prl/profile update. I'm still rocking fd19 haven't changed modems since late may after I tried the last few modems from end of may and went back to fd19 cuz i have great 3g speeds on it.

The E4GT Mobile Odin Thread

I hope hoping to get some discussion going regarding Mobile Odin and how it's working for people on our device.
So far, I've exclusively used it to flash kernels, but has anyone successfully flashed a full TAR with it yet? More specifically, has that full TAR also flashed your modem? I tried flashing a modem.bin file last night using MO, and while it went through the whole process in a way that appeared to be normal, upon reboot baseband was unchanged. I've read about others experiencing the same thing.
According to Chainfire regarding the modem.bin issue ...
Chainfire said:
This maybe a problem specific to CDMA devices... I'm not sure yet though.

I also read about some kernel panic mode reports when trying to use MO to flash the latest FC05 TAR.
So if you've used Mobile Odin, please share your successes and or failures. It's obviously a great tool but I'd like to identify where it's working and where it may not, for our device specifically.
I have used it going from ics back to GB ....but have only been flashing eg30 stock tar and then el26 cwm kernel .....then I boot into recovery and flash cm 7 if going to aokp or whatever ....I have tried fc05 & fb27 modem and they don't work it goes to like it is flashing it but finishes real quick like 10 seconds .... And normal Odin takes like a minute or more to flash modem...

I have been using to flash kernels and modems up until FC05. For some reason it will no longer flash modems, like said, it goes through the motions.
Ah, just remembered, used it to flash 27 tar, whole ROM. Flashed modem/kernel/system no issues. Even used it to open that .tar and just flash the modem or kernel once or twice.
The only thing that scares me about MOdin is getting a force close during a flash and hosing my phone.

I don't think that's possible. It seems to get the files ready then actually does the flashing on the reboot, as some kind of preboot flash function. When I flash a modem for example, upon reboot a Mobile Odin screen comes up and does stuff then the phone's OS boots.

Hmmm. So it sounds like you can flash a modem as a piece out of a TAR image, but not from a modem.bin file. I've tried the modem.bins for EL29, FC21 and FC27 all with the same result, which is no change.
You can pick parts out of a .tar.
I've had no luck with .bin files either.

Could you link to the pre-rooted EG30 Tar you have? I downloaded this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20089082#post20089082
and not sure if its pre-rooted. So when I flashed it via Mobile Odin I played it safe and just manually re-rooted via my Mac. I should have just checked to see if it was, but it didn't hit me at the time that a simple terminal command would confirm.
It would be nice to learn how to package things up to flash with mo and avoid recovery all together. Not even sure where to begin on that one.

Indeed, but you need to be EXTREMELY careful, like even more so than you do when modifying a .zip file.
.md5, .tar, etc. -- those are risky business to tamper with, unless you can repackage it and sign it correctly after adjusting, removing, and what have you.

I don't think this what he means by "pick parts out of a .tar". I think he means Mobile Odin can select only certain partition elements of a TAR, like just the modem for example. Please correct me if my assumption is wrong.

No not really conflicting if you look at them slowly. Its basically get back to a GB kernel at the end of the day. They say to odin it since you do not want to or have any other way to get a GB kernel on your phone if you are on ICS. Now you could flash from ICS but that is what people are trying to avoid since it could cause a brick.
Basically: When on ICS
1. Odin a GB CWM recovery(now others have used EL29 and Rogue recoveries as well) I personally use a stock CWM recovery from CM7 and Miui
2. From there you can wipe and flash and do nandroids as normal.
Option: Safest bet
1. One Click Odin your choice of any of the GB stock roms by sfhub
I have used both methods so far with no problems. I had CM9 on my phone then used odin to go back to the recovery used with CM7 and then I nandroid back my UnNamed Rom. I did this a few times without issue. I have never heard of any issues with anyone using any of the above two methods I mentioned. If someone has please inform us

I've searched around and I don't know how to just odin a kernel, so I use sfhubs one-click back to el26 then I use autoroot to install el26 +cwm.
I would like to just odin a kernel and flash from there, but i am unsure of the procedure, do you do this:
phone to download mode and connect to odin, use PDA slot and browse to kernel, hit start or GO or whatever it is, then when it starts to reboot, pwr+vlm up to get into recovery, then get my flash on from there?
I use mobile Odin for the kernel alone but I believe in PC Odin you can just select PDA and choose the kernel. Tar and flash it that way then when it starts to reboot either catch the volume up + power on the splash screen or do like I do and snatch the battery real quick and the boot to recovery, everytime I try to hit it while its rebooting Im too slow

With mobile odin, do I keep the kernel on my sdcard, same place I put roms and such? And when using mobile odin, if the file is *.tar.md5, do I remove the .md5 from the file name first? Do I use the flash firmware option?
I've done this at least 25 times recently; so easy, I'll post instructions here again.
1. get Mobile Odin(time saver to the max)
2. Get EL26 kernel (TAR version)
3. flash EL26 kernel in Mobile Odin (takes 10 seconds)
4. Boot into recovery(you will have the proper one now!)
5. Flash away
if you do this either coming from A GB rom to ICS, or going back to one, Guaranteed success...
Simple as can be; not sure why this keeps getting asked.....
The kernel is 8.1 mb, which exceeds the attachment size, so I can't post it here, but its all over this forum..

Yea u can keep em in a folder on internal SD that's what I do and just open the location it will find all tar files in that location then just select and follow directions, mOdin works really good its quick and no flash counter in crease or yellow triangle. Its alot easier to flash ics than having to go to the PC cuz u can just Odin el26+cwm kernel boot to recovery and get ur flash on without all the hassle of drivers and connecting a USB etc

My question was for when going back to gb from ics if I needed to Odin the whole rom, I had seen both kernel+cwm only and whole rom and just wanted to make sure if I just flashed the kernel only I'd be OK more for clarification than an actual how to for me since I know how to Odin both, just wanted to make sure I was odining the right things b4 I jumped and landed on a brick after I had seen someone say to Odin the whole rom I wanted to be sure I was doing it right since I had seen both ways mentioned. Its a little more confusing than my damn evo where I'm always on the same recovery no matter what, and a bit scary with the bricks flying around like a construction site filled with monkeys on meth

Yeah, flashing with this phone is different from the htc stuff, but once you get the hang of it, its just as easy!

Yea ur post cleared it up for me, just gets confusing when. Theres multiple methods recommended I was 99% sure I just needed to Odin the kernel only but wanted the clarification before I jumped off that bridge, not too comfortable jumping off a bridge when I'm not sure how deep the water is

well, like the asshole who pushed me in the deep end of the pool when I was 12 and didn't know how to swim told me, "figure it out or else", sometimes you gotta just go for it!!
Actually, I am nervous too when I try something new the first time, but, once you figure out who really knows what they are talking about, its easy to just pm them and ask them how they do it..
You obviously know your stuff man, so you will be an expert with this phone in no time!!
I did this going from Blazer 4.1 to CM9 with out any issues.

Quick question.. I can flash EL26 kernel again in mobile odin and should be able to restore my Blazer backup without any issues, correct? Blazer was backed up using Rogue EL29 kernel. Thanks!
Plus there's 5 android devices in my house all with different flashing methods it gets confusing keeping em all straight, got the evo4g, et4g, kindle fire, MoPho, and a gNote the et4g is the first Sammy I've used with Odin, my first android was an intercrap I mean intercept and it used the patched swupdater instead of Odin, so I'm still getting the hang of this method. I can flash the evo, kindle, intercept and photon blindfolded and drunker than a slut on prom night

I don't know how you keep all that **** straight; in my house, we ALL go with one "brand" of product, just to avoid that nightmare!!
If someone doesn't like it, I tell them that they get no tech support from me if they don't go with "the flow"!

Aokp flashing issue

Having the hardest time flashing this. Was running it all weekend till yesterday when I went to update profile (blazer gb). I went flash back and it will not flash I hang up on the sgs 2 screen. I've gone back to stock and re-root did everything I could right and still no go.
Went and did sfhubs el26 odin (which did put the triangle on the start up) and it wouldn't let me complete th flash due to it being the euro model. I don't know. Love this Rom super nice GREAT battery.
Wondering how to get this fixed on my end.

What do you mean euro model? Can you list out the steps you took?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
Hopefully you haven't messed your phone up too bad already.
Try getting into download mode and then use odin one click back to el29 and start over!
Sorry I ment the international version (gt9100) not the euro version. My phone works I have blend on here atm.
Alright so while I was on Aokp I
1. Flashed el26 with moblie odin.
2. Backed up Rom
3. Flashed calks wipe all
4. Flashed blazer 4.1
5. Updated profile.
6. Flashed el26 with mobile odin
Alright so here is where I was rushing.
7. Restored backup
8. Flashed fe16 repack
9. Boot.
So hindsight being the birch lover it is I should have done some wiping before step 7 and after step 7.
ROM wouldn't boot. I was able to get to download mode no and flashed stock el29 with pc odin. Phone still wouldn't boot. At this point I'm kinda getting worried I did something really dumb. Went into the stock recovery and wiped data and cache. Stock booted fine after that.
I root using one click and got my mobile odin on. Flashed el26 wiped everything tried to restore and wiped again and flashed kernel and wiped again. Wouldn't boot.
Did all the above again using pc odin el26 which gave me the triangle on boot up screen no bigger to me just butt ugly. Went into el26 recovery and tried to flash Rom fresh and still would go past boot up screen.
So I'm back on gb wanting silk back on my phone. Just don't know what to do next.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
i think step 8 is where you messed up. I believe thats a TouchWiz only kernel. You need an AOKP specific kernel to boot AOKP
Yeah I'm pretty sure that you're right. Got home where I had access to normal Odin just in case. Did everything twice. Manual wiped twice, calks format script twice flashed twice wiped again twice and bada Bing pow. Dopest from I've ever use is back up and rolling.
One question I have is how do I restore a back up. I understand it can only be done with el26 kernel but I guess I'm not clear on the process I guess.

Are you really flashing the roms from here then? The I-9100 is a GSM phone and quite frankly the actual I-9100 forum has a much bigger variety and those are the roms you should be using. Not any of the ones from here since this is a CDMA device.

quite simple actually. Just odin/mobile odin the el26 kernel/recovery. Restore the backup, then flash an AOKP kernel. reboot and you're set.
In an el26 recovery, flash aokp twice. The first flash doesn't do it all the way. Then flash gapps.

No I have an epic 4g touch, but when you flash el26 kernel threw PC Odin it gives you the yellow triangle. I bought a USB jig on amazon for like five bucks that will be here on Friday and it will get rid of that stupid yellow triangle and reset my Odin count too.

No CWM on EL29 + EL26 Recoverys

I am having issues booting into CWM EL26 + EL29 Recoveries.
I am able to odin the kernal but it just sticks on the Samsung logo if I try to access CWM.
It used to reboot and either go right into CWM or I would do Volume Up and Power to access.
I am currently on Paradox Rom GB27. I am trying to flash a ROM that needs EL26 or EL29 but cant access.
Any idea why I cannot access?
Also, if I have the charger plugged in (usb to comp), the screen gets stuck on a battery icon like its charging but doesnt move.
(think thats just because the charger is plugged in) BUT it seems that whatever this kernal is doing it the phone it is Freezing it at that first boot point.
I reflashed GB27 so im fine for now but just want to solve this mystery.
Any help appreciated! thanks!!

I use Mobile Odin to flash el29 direct boot kernel..and have never had an issue.. There is a lite version of mobile Odin on xda.. I would try that.. Make sure the md5's match on the kernel.. Mobile Odin will check it for you..

I can try mobile odin. I have the full version. I will give it a shot. The thing is
I had those kernals for over a year, always used them, worked fine.
Now all of a sudden they dont. I tried downloading agai , checked md5, everything appears correct.
I will post back the results.

No luck with mobile odin. Same thing. Stuck at the White Samsung Logo.
I am out of options. Unless there is another kernel I can try that is similar to el26 + el29.
Its weird how gb27 works fine... I just dont understand that. Could something be broke or misconfigured on my phone to not allow
installing el26 + el29?

Thanks for your help. I appreciate it. I will stick with Paradox for now.
I wanted to try multi window rom but flashing on gb27 gives force closes and constant reboots.
Is it possible that once im on gb27, I cant go back and flash a gb rom? Ive done it
Before so thats why im stumped. Its like my phone doesnt support it.
I went on rwilco and downloaded multiple files and made sure they were with cwm.
They all do the same thing. Heres one for you... would water damage cause those kernels not to work?
Phones fine besides the kernel issue.
Also is it possible when doing cleanup on my phone and deleting
Old backups cause an issue? I thought to myself... wait I can restore an old rom with
El29! Lol no where to be found, already got rid of them.

I've flashed many ROMs..from GB to JB and back the other way..lol. Never had that problem..you could try to go into recovery and flash the format all x 2.. Then flash the el26 kernel zip..reboot recovery.. I don't know...might work..The format all x 2 will get ya ready for flashing GB/ICS so it might help..once on el26 you can use jb format all x 2 to get ready for the new jb ROM flash.. Just a thought...

Try doing an Odin stock rooted Rom flash on ICS and then working from there using mobile Odin. Sometimes I can't do the pc Odin for those kernels so I use mobile Odin and it works perfect.
If you're trying to flash the new SHOShock Rom by TD then I'm having issues with that too. My phone gets stuck on a boot cycle and if I try to flash a nandroid back up then it gets stuck on the Samsung screen. Only way out of it was flashing a GB27 rooted stock Rom in pc Odin.

Just going off from where you left off man. I figured I would put my 2 cents in cause it sure can be a headache sometimes. I noticed when I'm out of luck pc Odin always saves me. I agree this community is great when it comes to helping each other.

Had a similar issue yesterday. I flashed the el29 recovery without wiping the /preload first, and it would not boot. Booted back into gb27 agat recovery via Odin, wiped the /preload, flashed el29 zip, and a successful boot. Don't know if it is the same issue, but that is my story...

How did you wipe the preload? I'm having issues flashing shostock and that might help me successfully flash it. Thanks!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 4
First, download the el29 recovery kernel zip located in the rwilco repository.
Next either flash, or already be on the gb27 agat recovery kernel (also can be found in repository).
While in agat recovery, navigate to "mounts and storage"
Select "format /preload" (and whatever else you want to wipe out)
Back out, then "install zip from SD card"
Flash the el29 zip and you should be good to go.
