Simple root without losing data? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I searched for a thread for this topic on an Epic 4G Touch, but I could not find any. If there exists a thread, I would gladly remove this one.
Anyway, there are a few quirks that are REALLY starting to irk me with this phone. I just want a simple root on my unrooted phone, that won't make me lose any data. Basically, all I want to do is get rid of that stupid stupid stupid camera shutter sound and bring the bounce effect back (if possible) instead of the blue color tinge when you reach the top or bottom of a page.
Is any of this possible? Brick my phone?
P.S. ~Taking pictures of diagrams posted on lectures is a drag, iPhone users laugh at me

Umm a stock root? Without losing data? Flash zedomaxs kernel then flash calkulins stock root

I would just suck it up and root the easy way man, you'll lose everything but just install it again, back up your contacts with google or an sd card, plus I don't trust zedomax's kernel. Your choice though. Why don't you like this phone? it's effin' awesome, well with a custom rom that is

Just listen to the Master he is giving you sage advice! Download this file and follow directions in the thread:
SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097_ROOTED_NODATA-oc-sfx.exe [Mirror1 / Mirror2 / Mirror3 / Multi / Torrent] (PRESERVE user data)
[MD5: 98c1ebd3b703c94ee87d1f065f5e72c9 / Size: 283,764,568]
This is the one that will preserve your data if you want. However backup everything you can just in case.
This is most painless way. Sfhub also has his e4gtauto download that will allow you to root/unroot so if you want to unroot and download ICS OTA later you can.
Doc

It's insanely easy to go back to stock man, root by using sfhubs one click EL29 with root, it's completely stock with root, ya you'll lose your apps and stuff but just re install like I said, then if you wish to go back to stock simply flash this in odin
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1383678
Bam! your completely at stock EG30, with the option to update to Eko2, then el29, then ICS whenever it comes out.
-O I forgot, just like they said! SFhubs root also has preserve data option on his one clicks so you won't even loose anything either, contacts, apps or anything else

Ok I'll try it out, thanks guys

Hey so, I'm reading that if the OTA for ICS comes out, and this a stock rom, nothing drastic is changing, I will be able to download it without unrooting?

Definitely check out Qbking77!! He's the man!! He has vids on everything and only tells it like it is. I suggest Calkulins stock rooted rom.. Maybe after you are rooted check out sfhubs one clicks.. They are great!! I know sfhub says you can get ics ota updates from his one clicks...
Qbking has vids on all this and more. There's lots of variety with this device! Many great roms!!
(Edited)
Unrooting takes about 2 minutes. (thanks to sfhubs one clicks) You plug your phone in to pc, extract a file, click 2 buttons and you are stock again!! Rooting back and installing recovery and a rom of choice takes the same amount of time. It's very simple. See Qbking77s YouTube. You will see. You will do it and wonder why you didn't sooner. I know when I first rooted, I did.

I just hit restart and install from the update notification and it tried to install but couldn't. It went to the caution triangle with the Android guy screen. Then I hold the power button until recovery booted, cleared cache and reboot. Never seen the update notification again even after reboots. Make sure you freeze the update checker from titanium backup our you would have to go through this again

Help with Epic 4G Touch Root.

You can flash the pre-rooted EL29 ODIN One-Click in my signature. Then use Auto Root to install CWM.
This will give you root, CWM, and avoid the yellow triangle. From there you can install whatever you want w/o triggering the yellow triangle.
If you can't read my signature, the links are also in the Auto Root sticky.
ok i was looking at your link today. so by me rooting the EL29, i would have to go back to your page and do the autoroot method to be able to get Clock work mod running? and i have one more question, Will i have any issues with the Wifi by using this rooting method?

Yes after installing the Full (resets user data) or NoData (preserves user data) pre-rooted EL29, go to the Auto Root sticky and choose Option C to install CWM.
It would be trivial to include CWM in the pre-rooted EL29. The reason I don't is because it would trigger the yellow triangle and increase your ODIN flash count. Using the pre-rooted EL29 ODIN One-Click then using the Auto Root sticky for CWM won't trigger the yellow triangle nor increase the ODIN flash count. It'll leave you with root and CWM, which is what most people want.
It will have zero postiive or negative effect on your WiFi. Whatever EL29 is going to give you with respect to WiFi is what you are going to get.

Yes, after you have a (pre) rooted EL29, use Option C to install EL29+CWM-Rogue
You can actually install any of the CWMs listed as different kernels will run with different modems. Some people prefer to keep them matched since that is what Samsung/Sprint would have tested with.

When you select Option C from the main page, you will be presented with a list of many different stock kernels and stock kernels repacked with CWM. You can actually install any of them, for example EK02+CWM. Some people feel it is best to match the kernel with the ROM/Modem you are using, in which case install EL29+CWM-Rogue. Some people feel different kernels work better for them, in which case, feel free to experiment with the others. You can also go back to EL29 stock kernel using Option C.

Basically just flash the pre-rooted EL29 ODIN One-Click in my signature to get root. If you want CWM, use the Auto Root package, Option C, to install EL29+CWM-Rogue.

well for some urge, i just want newest bootloaders, official untouched software loaded onto my phone. I'm finding these ROMs to be not as good as stock. For example dialer codes on deodexed ROMS can't do "*#0*#". I just want temp root to gett rid of bloat, apply the tethering mod, and then remove root. I just dont want my files to be pre modified or touched by someone.
There is no root exploit available in the way you want at the moment. However, I can assure you that if you flash the pre-rooted EL29 ODIN One-Click, then do whatever cleanup you want, then use Auto Root Option B to unroot, you will be at 100% stock Modem, Kernel, and ROM (except for the changes YOU made)
I'm not sure the distinction you are making is really significant, as adding 3 files to the ROM, doing your thing, then removing them isn't going to result in any "changes" in behavior, certainly not the ones you listed above.
The packages I put together are not custom ROMs. They are the minimum needed to get root. Nothing else is changed. The changes made to add root are completely reversible by running Option B in Auto Root.

How come people installing AIO over your EL29 are having issues compared to those who put AIO on Calk's pulled odex stock EL29? Those type of discrepancies get me frustrated. I'm not saying anything is wrong, but idk :/
the issues on the pre-rooted EL29 can be pointed out in the AIO thread
I think i found a way to try out tomorrow.
https://market.android.com/details?id=org.projectvoodoo.otarootkeeper
I can use that to keep root after taking an OTA. so i can use auto root from EG30 stock and use that app to preserve root with the OTA
A review from the app:
"Kept Root After Upgrade to Sprint Epic 4G
Epic 4g is the Sprint version of the Galaxy II. I installed the app before doing an OTA upgrade today. I backed up root. I did the over the air upgrade, no more root access. I opened OTA RootKeeper, pressed the button for restore, and I have root again. AMAZING!"

HELP PLEASE!!! Just got OTA ICS and lost a bunch of space

So after installing the update I went to watch a video installed on my internal usb drive and it wasn't there. I went into "usbstorage" using file manager and the entire folder was empty. I checked using "disk usage" and I have about 3 gb now listed as system data which happens to be about the amount of video data I had. The videos aren't important but it sucks to lose that space. Any help is welcome please. Not rooted btw

I checked using "disk usage" and I have about 3 gb now listed as system data which happens to be about the amount of video data I had. The videos aren't important but it sucks to lose that space. Any help is welcome please. Not rooted btw

Try using root file explorer on the phone itself or use adb shell over usb connection. ICS uses MTP for your USB storage by default, which may lead to different views of your internal storage.

I tried root explorer but things seem to be arranged differently once you open it up that way. I only downloaded it for the 15 minute refund window and couldn't figure it out in that time frame. Are there any free options out there or do you have any ideas where to find it?
here's a screen shot of the data.
Just start from fresh with a one click.

Run AutoRoot Option E and enable ICS USB Mass Storage mode. Then you should be able to mount your phone to your PC like in GingerBread and see all the files (ie when you connect to PC it will use USB Mass Storage mode instead of MTP mode).

Would suggest trying sfhub's FF18 Odin one click first (full, not the nodata version) as that should fix your problem first.

OK, I just watched the video and have a couple of questions. If I do the odin one click, how do I unroot?
Also if I decide to keep root, what are the next steps for flashing a rom? Do I need Clockwork?

Sfhub includes steps in his thread how to easily unroot - or you can flash Sextape's FF18 leak by Odin as it is unrooted.
If you want to start flashing let me find TrayLunch's post as he sums it up how to do it safely :
TrayLunch said:
Ok, first, go ahead and use sfhub's Odin One Click to get FF18 Stock Rooted No Data.
From there, get Agat68's Recovery Kernel that's built from source. You can either put it in the PDA slot of Odin, or use Mobile Odin to add just the kernel. This will give you CWM and put you on ICS. Go ahead and make a backup.
This kernel is perfectly safe, but I would still recommend using rujelus' format 2x or calk's format all tools in place of wiping instructions before installation of any ROM. They're thorough and safe.
Flash away like a champ, but throw Agat's kernel in after every fresh flash. That will keep the superbrick bug out of your hair.

Thank you, I'll make sure I read more before I start. Are there anymore QBking77 videos I should watch?
So I rooted with odin one click and it didn't change anything. I'm not sure what else to try.
Did you run Auto Root and under Option E, choose Enable ICS USB Mass Storage?
Auto Root is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728
Just use the Lite version.

Another I think I'm bricked thread

I have looked through some of the threads on bricked phones and none have seemed to help. Right now all that shows up is Samsung. I found a video that said to get a file from samsung-update so I did. I used Odin to flash that and everything seems fine. This all started after I decided to try and go back to stock from liquid smooth. I just wasn't a fan of it and wanted to try tomorrow for a touchwiz rom. When I tried to flash back it didn't work so I thought if I used the tool kit to unroot it would put the original stock back. All it did was unroot. Any help? When I check my flash count it is around 4. If they check that at Sprint will I be able to have my phone fixed or will I just be SOL?
Hello shazo85,
If you can get to download mode (which it sounds like you can, seeing your flash counter), you can flash a stock ROM via Odin.
Try this thread and here download the package for your device.

Kind of off topic but what is a flash counter and how do I check it lol?

Its shows if you have flashed a custom rom and another way for carriers to know if you have rooted your phone. So every time you flash a custom rom rom your phone counts it. But you can always reset the flash counter with triangle away.

It is exactly what it's called it counts the number of flashes you do lol you can see it by going into download mode(volume down +power) it will be in the top right corner.

The LJ7 with count reset for 32 didn't work. I'm trying the L13 right now. It seems to be doing something now.
That worked. I'm on 4.0.4, but I have a working phone.

True however I'm the type of person that has to make sure I know what I'm doing to unroot also. So now that I'm rooted again I want to unroot and make sure I do it right. Then find a touchwiz rom that I like that is fully working.

Ok, look for the "ODIN 1-clicks" thread, it takes you back to stock, stock recovery, and resets your flash counter in one
As for good touchwiz roms, I would recommend either MOAR (Mother of All ROMS) or TPR (the peoples rom)
You can find both in the "Android development" subforum"

I will check them out. I'm currently trying to use the toolkit that was posted to unroot. I'm sitting at the TWRP ADB Sideload screen now. All I have is a bar at the bottom and above it cancel. I'm guessing it is installing adb sideload filename.zip? Not sure how long this will take. I will look for the ODIN 1-clicks thread later. To help narrow it down any idea as to what forum it was posted in?

Thanks. TWRP seems to be taking a long time to install the files it needs to do the sideload. Nothing seems to have changed, but when I try to go further in the toolkit it just gives me an error that it can't find the device.

Just saw your other post in my thread and it sounds like you didnt do it correctly. Interested to see the output from the box on the one click, with that said load this onto your sdcard http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1904099
then factory reset and flash in custom recovery
---------- Post added at 10:20 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:17 PM ----------
Also I just noticed your OP says you came from liquidsmooth. That is CM10.1 based. CM10.1 does not show the galaxy S3 screen when booting. Which tells me that u still have that kernel and a touchwiz based system. Whatever you did to return from liquidsmooth didnt flash a new kernel. You also have to wipe before switching back to a touchwiz rom like stock, my zip above is a fix for all that

Thanks, I will give that a shot. The link was posted above by someone. I didn't know that was the same one you were talking about. Seems like it isn't as easy to root, flash and even to unroot the S3 as it was the EVO 4G. I only had issues with some roms on that.
This is a samsung. Its easier than any HTC to unroot and go back to stock. Your just not used to it yet

Agreed. Samsung bootloader is unlocked by default. That means rooting is as simple as an Odin flash of a recovery. With HTC (locked bootloader), you had to use a program such as unrevoked to gain access to it. And each and every update HTC tried to re-lock the bootloader, so it was difficult to know if you should update (this is one reason why we get so many threads on here that say "how do I root with MB1?!?!?!").
As far as I'm aware, rooting with GS3 has been accomplished using the same method for quite a while.
Now, rooting using the Odin method is a bit more involved than it was with unrevoked, but really the only steps are clicking through a couple of files. The steps are stated clearly. It's just new and feels different. I was really wary of using Odin (still am, if I can be honest), but I was much more uncomfortable with unrevoked.
Samsungs seem harder because everybody and their mother has a tutorial on how to root it and nobody uses the most quick, clear cut 30-sec root possible, CF AUTO ROOT is easy and quick as hell, yet people treat it like the redheaded step child and ignore its presence. I dont get why
*Not lying when i say 30-sec either.
FInd me an easier method than that

More information on CF Auto-Root:
Website (look up d2spr in the big table).
XDA Thread. Has instructions and further clarifications.
I had honestly never heard of it before, but it seems like a good (and quick) option for getting root from stock.
Could be that I'm just not used to it. I only ever had to root the EVO if I was coming back from Sprint. If I remember right the unroot was just load up 2 zip files. Nice that this is just one to unroot. I will have to look into that CF Auto Root.
I too was one of those people looking for how to root MBI. I didn't know it was all the same. Chances are I would have never donated to the toolkit if I would have known. I also would have never used the toolkit. It would be nice if we had just one thread on rooting instead of 3 or 4 that we have. Might be less confusing that way.
EDIT: Forgot to say that the zip file for the unroot and counter reset did work. I had my phone back up and working just as I clocked in for work. All night I have had apps downloading.
