If you are running 2.3.6 already then you have the latest version.
If you are running 2.3.5 you can Odin the 2.3.6 stock if you would like and then have the most current version.
Otherwise the only possible way would be to Odin back to 2.3.5 stock then go through Keis or OTA to get 2.3.6 from 2.3.5 but if you are going to Odin, why not just Odin the 2.3.6 Stock.

I have the 2.3.5 version, is there a good guide to get the 2.3.6 for dummies ?
If you installed kies itll update you. otherwise give it a day or two and youll get the update notice. Or try *#2432546#* on your dialer. It should spell "checkin".

Im thinking in restore to complete stock, installing the 2.3.6 via ODIN using this tutorial. May it work?
Yes if it makes sense.or you could see if drivers are properly installed.

Something has changed on your system from stock. Did you remove any stock apps like asphalt?
Have you installed clockwormod? That will stop the update from verifying, too. However, you can use clockworkmod to flash this modified update.

Check your phone info and see if your baseband version ends in DI18 as well as the build number.
I had a problem where the baseband stayed DK28. I had to Odin back with the stock tar file in order to return completely to stock. This also installed all bloatware I had removed.
After that, the upgrade was seemless.
Use Odin. Easiest way to upgrade

I currently on ics stock phone but rooted so I can delete bloat. I am currently downloading jelly bean from samsungs website. http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=SGH-T999 . I don't want to brick my phone or anything and I am not sure about how to go about this. What is the best way to go about this? Can I just simply open odin and load jelly bean in there and install? How should I go about this? Thanks in advance.
Also when I get jelly bean on will my cwm files work or do I need to wait for a new version to come out?
Flash the stock rooted version:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1991255
Otherwise you'll need to flash back to stock. Then update
You can't update with a custom recovery like cwm.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
I think thats already what I got. I don't have any custom roms or anything. Just stock with root for my current setup. 4.0.4. Can I just upgrade straight to jelly bean then without wiping my data?
In your second post you mention your cwm files. Do you have a custom recovery?
How did you root might be a better question?
Just rooted you can update, but will probably lose root
If you have clockwork (cwm) or twrp recovery the update won't flash

The way I rooted was using the method zedomax posted. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1735561
I did find an article that I think is the answer im looking for. Right now I got odin putting the stock out of the box software back on.
How did you get Odin to do that? I have CWM installed and everytime I reboot the phone (Home, Vol Up, Power) CWM comes up but Odin doesn't recognized the phone as being connected. It will only recognize my phone when it's booted normally into Android.
All I did was follow the steps in the 2nd link I posted. It worked and I just did an update through the settings menu.

It should, though I would recommend a different way.
You can get the root66 firmware from the FW thread linked in my sig. Its just the stock fw, but prerooted.
Flash it via odin and youre done!
If you dont want to mess with the fw you can use the method you posted, but id get up to date files first.
I havent watched it in some time but I think you can get most of what you need from the fw thread, post 2. If you need help finding something else just let us know.

I guess official JB update released today but your website shows 20.10.2012. is it going to be same firmware as tmobile released today?
So I updated to 4.1.2 recently and decided I'd simply root my phone. Now today I have the AT&T updater telling me I have an update pending. I'm already on 4.1.2 and the only possible reason I could conceive as to why this is popping up is because during rooting something must have changed and that flagged the updater as me having an obsolete firmware. Anyone else getting this?

If you are going to stick with stock, you may want to use autoruns to disable the check for updates. That way at least the notification will go away.

You can either try Kies, or download the update from http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/ .
Umm....

So......

Have you used Odin before? Perhaps to root your phone?
Do you have the USB drivers installed on your computer? If not, it would probably be a lot easier to flash one of the stock builds from the development section.
Here is one

No I havent used Odin
I just want to install the official jb update on my phone.
If Odin is the only way then I will do it.
I do have all the drivers installed on my computer.
Can you maybe tell me more about Odin and flashing before I actually go and do it?
Also I have unlocked my phone but I dont think it is rooted.

http://galaxys2root.com/t-mobile-ga...-to-ics-stock-on-t-mobile-galaxy-s2-sgh-t989/
I will pm you a link to Odin.
You have to be very careful following this guide because if something goes wrong you could hard brick your phone.
By the way, you will lose all of your settings so you should probably backup before you attempt this.

You have to install either TWRP or CWM to make a backup. You don't really need to, though. Unless you want to be able to bring your phone back to where it is now if you don't like jellybean. Installing a new recovery is similar to installing the new jb update.
The first link I pm'ed was for the firmware and the second link was for the Odin program to flash the firmware to your phone.
No, you should not be needing Kies.

It will replace the whole ROM, so I think your data will be erased. I am not sure about the unlock, but others have said the unlock survives a ROM change.
Umm so lets finalize the whole thing
this is where I should go to update ( also replace their ics firmware with my jb one)
This is the official jb for my phone
This is Odin (which I will use to update my phone)

First we will get TWRP installed. Use this guide as a reference http://galaxys2root.com/t-mobile-galaxy-s2/how-to-root-icsgb-on-t-mobile-galaxy-s2-sgh-t989/
Turn off your phone. Hold volume up and volume down and plug it into your computer. Now follow the steps in the guide above using the odin program I sent you and the TWRP file. You only need to go up to number 6.
After it reboots, shut your phone off and then hold volume up and volume down and the power button until you feel it vibrate and let go of the power button. You should now be in TWRP where you click backup. Click the check-boxes for everything but internal sdcard. You can also change the backup name to make it easier to keep track. Then just swipe to backup. Don't worry if the screen turns off, it is supposed to do that to save battery.
Once you get that done we can start on the next thing.
Where do I get twrp from and do I use it on my phone or pc?

Why not just factory reset? Probably the easiest way if you just want stock.
