Update question, jelly bean - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

I currently on ics stock phone but rooted so I can delete bloat. I am currently downloading jelly bean from samsungs website. http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=SGH-T999 . I don't want to brick my phone or anything and I am not sure about how to go about this. What is the best way to go about this? Can I just simply open odin and load jelly bean in there and install? How should I go about this? Thanks in advance.

Also when I get jelly bean on will my cwm files work or do I need to wait for a new version to come out?

Flash the stock rooted version:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1991255
Otherwise you'll need to flash back to stock. Then update
You can't update with a custom recovery like cwm.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium

I think thats already what I got. I don't have any custom roms or anything. Just stock with root for my current setup. 4.0.4. Can I just upgrade straight to jelly bean then without wiping my data?

In your second post you mention your cwm files. Do you have a custom recovery?
How did you root might be a better question?
Just rooted you can update, but will probably lose root
If you have clockwork (cwm) or twrp recovery the update won't flash

The way I rooted was using the method zedomax posted. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1735561
I did find an article that I think is the answer im looking for. Right now I got odin putting the stock out of the box software back on.

How did you get Odin to do that? I have CWM installed and everytime I reboot the phone (Home, Vol Up, Power) CWM comes up but Odin doesn't recognized the phone as being connected. It will only recognize my phone when it's booted normally into Android.

All I did was follow the steps in the 2nd link I posted. It worked and I just did an update through the settings menu.

It should, though I would recommend a different way.
You can get the root66 firmware from the FW thread linked in my sig. Its just the stock fw, but prerooted.
Flash it via odin and youre done!
If you dont want to mess with the fw you can use the method you posted, but id get up to date files first.
I havent watched it in some time but I think you can get most of what you need from the fw thread, post 2. If you need help finding something else just let us know.

Rooting UVALH3?

Noob here. I can't find this anywhere. I just flashed (or whatever you call it,) to UVALH3. With 4.1.1 came all the bloatware again that I had removed when I had the phone rooted. Is it possible to root UVALH3 as well? I can't find it anywhere. Do I just go ahead and ODIN the same file to do it or has there just been no safe way found yet for UVALH3? Thanks.

EDIT: Actually I'm not quite sure how to do this. Are you supposed to go into recovery mode and install from external? It gives me a signature verification error when I try that.
OP: for your own good don't do anything else at the moment. I'm on my phone and driving so I can't really help too much but for your own good don't do anything or else you might end up bricked. Make sure you get a reply before you continue. If you don't get one in the next few hours I'll post a reply and walk you through the steps. I can't right now though.
To the op, you need to get back to ics to root and flash the jellybean rooted rom(need a custom recovery)

Need some help guys!?

My friends has a gs3 he purchased on release day and rooted it. The past week he accepted two ota's which broke his root. So I'm trying to root it for him but here's where the confusion kicks in. On sprints website it actually show these updates are old and not new and there's two more recent ones he never got pushed to him. Right now the phone is on LG2 and won't update any further. What do I need to do to be up to date with root. Should I just look for a way to root this build or try updating it. By the way I haven't seen any root methods for this build which is why I'm asking. Thanks in advance to anyone who responds

The method he used to root it in the first place should work again. Try that.
Then once it's rooted again go to this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1904099
Download the file "LI3 STOCK WITH AUTO COUNTER RESET" in the first post and flash the file in recovery. That will put the phone to 100%stock, unrooted, on the latest build.
From that point, if he wants to, he can reroot the phone and install the latest TWRP recovery. After that, tell him not to accept any OTA updates. Come back here to the development forum and someone will have the update in flashable form so that root isn't lost.

Yup thats the most easy way of doing it. you say ur not rooted but do you have custom recovery? If so then re rooting before the flash wouldn't be necessary.
It will not wipe data however its recommended that you do. granted it will probably work just fine if it being installed over top of a stock Rom. Then to keep root/recovery just follow the instructions in the post

I'm not sure if he has a custom recovery but I'm assuming if he was able to accept ota's and install them fine he must have stock recovery. I'll have to check and see a lil later as he's at work now.

Yes it is stupid proof but it also makes you have to take an extra step to reset the count. On my phone I just deal with the Odin OC which don't mess with your counts and come rooted then mobile Odin for the rest. Never have to worry about a flash count. Try flashing this. It's more stock then anything (odin in download mode)Follow directions in the thread here. Should be safe once ya do this (i've soft bricked both my Epic and my Epic touch a few times) And this is a Rooted EL26 (GB) rom as well. Hope it helps.
If you can get into DL mode, you can also use the one-click EL29 . It takes all the guesswork out of Odin settings plus it gets rid of the yellow triangle. Every time I have been able to get back to DL mode I have used this method. I will try to find the link, but there is a great video on YouTube done by QBking77.

Let us know when you get back to stock EL29. Also where do you want to go with this and what do you want to do? Are you looking to be stock rooted or install custom roms?
Also, once you get to EL29, your phone will check for upgrades. If you want to stay there on GB, stay rooted, or install roms, do not accept the upgrade.
Stock before my mess up I had 4.0.4 and after doing these step I hope to get back to that just rooted. After that maybe clockworkmod and throw in a rom for ics...., I have to do updates manualy right? If phone is rooted?

Yes, you will need to install them manually with Odin, Mobile Odin, or CWM after you are rooted. Figure out what ICS rom you want before you do anything and let us know if you need any help. BTW, there are a few JB roms that are decent daily drivers as well.
Were you able to get back to EL29 okay?

I believe so. I have never done that. Once I rooted, I have never went back to stock.
Havent got a chance to try and flash to el29 yet. Left my phone at my gf house for the night so gotta wait tell she brings it over in the morning. As soon as I jump on all this ill let yall know .
i flashed this---->http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721229./ and every thing works great. now im gonna flash this custom romhttp://phantomroms.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=13&pid=83#pid83. to do so i need to flash a custom recovery correct and calkulins?
It is considered safer to flash from a GB kernal, but whatever the instructions call for on that custom rom do that. BTW, I have never flashed a rom from any thing other than EL29 direct boot CWM and EL26 stock w/ CWM5.

[Q] Need some help. Best way to unlock and restore to stock Galaxy S3 on CWN 6.0.2.8

Hi All,
I currently have my phone running Slimbean build 4.1 with CWM installed for my recovery. I want to restore my phone back to stock to unlock it, and give Touchwiz a try again. Download odin for your pc and the stock firmware for your carrier. Use odin to flash the firmware. Both of these can be found in the Android development section.

You won't unlock it for free (perma unlock anyway). You'll either have to get the code from your carrier or buy it online.

You can either try Kies, or download the update from http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/ .

So......
Is there any way I can install the firmware directly from my phone?

Have you used Odin before? Perhaps to root your phone?
Do you have the USB drivers installed on your computer? If not, it would probably be a lot easier to flash one of the stock builds from the development section.

I will pm you a link to Odin.
You have to be very careful following this guide because if something goes wrong you could hard brick your phone.
By the way, you will lose all of your settings so you should probably backup before you attempt this.
How will I back it up if kies doesnt recognize my phone

You have to install either TWRP or CWM to make a backup. You don't really need to, though. Unless you want to be able to bring your phone back to where it is now if you don't like jellybean. Installing a new recovery is similar to installing the new jb update.
The first link I pm'ed was for the firmware and the second link was for the Odin program to flash the firmware to your phone.
No, you should not be needing Kies.

It will replace the whole ROM, so I think your data will be erased. I am not sure about the unlock, but others have said the unlock survives a ROM change.
Umm so lets finalize the whole thing
this is where I should go to update ( also replace their ics firmware with my jb one)
This is the official jb for my phone
This is Odin (which I will use to update my phone)

First we will get TWRP installed. Use this guide as a reference http://galaxys2root.com/t-mobile-galaxy-s2/how-to-root-icsgb-on-t-mobile-galaxy-s2-sgh-t989/
Turn off your phone. Hold volume up and volume down and plug it into your computer. Now follow the steps in the guide above using the odin program I sent you and the TWRP file. You only need to go up to number 6.
After it reboots, shut your phone off and then hold volume up and volume down and the power button until you feel it vibrate and let go of the power button. You should now be in TWRP where you click backup. Click the check-boxes for everything but internal sdcard. You can also change the backup name to make it easier to keep track. Then just swipe to backup. Don't worry if the screen turns off, it is supposed to do that to save battery.
Once you get that done we can start on the next thing.
Where do I get twrp from and do I use it on my phone or pc?
